Efficiency enhancement of the spectrophotometric estimation of cobalt in waters and pharmaceutical preparations using dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and microcells with long optical paths

Use of a Hydrophobic Azo Dye for the Centrifuge-Less Cloud Point Extraction–Spectrophotometric Determination of Cobalt

The hydrophobic azo dye 6-hexyl-4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol (HTAR, H₂L) was studied as part of a system for the centrifuge-less cloud point extraction (CL-CPE) and spectrophotometric determination of traces of cobalt. The extracted 1:2 (Co:HTAR) complex, [Co^III(HL⁻)(L²⁻)]⁰, shows an absorption maximum at 553 nm and contains HTAR in two different acid–base forms. Optimum conditions for its formation and CL-CPE were found as follows: 1 × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ of HTAR, 1.64% of Triton X-114, pH of 7.8, incubation time of 20 min at ca. 50 °C, and cooling time of 30 min at ca. −20 °C. The linear range, limit of detection, and apparent molar absorptivity coefficient were 5.4–189 ng mL⁻¹, 1.64 ng mL⁻¹, and 2.63 × 10⁵ L mol⁻¹ cm⁻¹, respectively. The developed procedure does not use any organic solvents and can be described as simple, cheap, sensitive, convenient, and environmentally friendly. It was successfully applied to the analysis of artificial mixtures and real samples, such as steel, dental alloy, rainwater, ampoules of vitamin B₁₂, and saline solution for intravenous infusion.

Functionalized MOF as a Sensitive Spectroscopic Probe for Hg2+, Co2+, and Al3+ Ions Detection in Aqueous Media

A modified metal-organic framework (MOF) named Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br was synthesized via a Schiff-base reaction between the MOFs (Al-MIL-53-NH₂) and 5-bromo salicylaldehyde. The robust functionalized Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br was used as a novel spectrophotometric sensor for detecting Hg²⁺, Co²⁺, and Al³⁺ ions. In a wide range of concentrations, the absorption spectral intensity of Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br increased linearly upon increasing the concentration of Hg²⁺, Co²⁺, and Al³⁺ ions. The limit of detection (LOD) of the proposed Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br sensor reached 1.52 ppm of Hg²⁺ ion (7.56 × 10^-9 M). Therefore, this study introduces a novel ratiometric Hg²⁺, Co²⁺, and Al³⁺ ions chemosensor. Simple treatment using thiourea or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid can remove the metal ions from the used sensor and use it many times with a high efficiency. In addition, the Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br sensor has a high adsorption capacity for these metal ions. The design of the robust Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br sensor provided high stability, reproducibility, selectivity, high sensitivity, and a facile sensing design. Furthermore, the good absorption spectral stability of Al-MIL-53-N=SA-Br in aqueous media, the broad linear in sensing, and the low LOD of the Hg²⁺, Co²⁺, and Al³⁺ ions show its high potential in determining these ions in real water.

Utilization of a plasticized PVC optical sensor for the selective and efficient detection of cobalt(ii) in environmental samples

A novel sensitive, selective, and reversible cobalt(ii) ion optical sensor was prepared by the incorporation of 5-[o-carboxyphenylazo]2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid [CPDB] and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) in a plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane containing dioctyl adipate (DOA) as a plasticizer. The influence of several parameters such as pH, base matrix, solvent mediator and reagent concentration was optimized. A comparison of the obtained results with those of previously reported sensors revealed that the proposed method, in addition to being fast and simple, provided a good linear range (0.05–45.20 μM) and low detection limit (0.015 μM). Low detection and quantification limits and excellent selectivity in the presence of interfering ions such as Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Ag⁺, Au³⁺, Cr³⁺, Cd²⁺, Zn²⁺, Hg²⁺, and SO₄²⁻ make it feasible to monitor Co²⁺ ion content accurately and repeatedly in environmental samples with complicated matrices. The optode was regenerated successfully using 0.3 M nitric acid (HNO₃) solution while its response was reversible with a relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 1.9% for seven replicate determinations of 20 μM Co²⁺ in various membranes. The optode was stable and was stored for at least 15 days without observing any change in its sensitivity.
