Dicyanamide-intertwined assembly of two new Zn complexes based on N2O4-type pro-ligand: Synthesis, crystal networks, spectroscopic insights, and selective nitroaromatic turn-off fluorescence sensing

Supramolecular clumps of μ2-1,3-acetate bridges of Cd(II)-Salen complex: Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, crystal structure, DFT quantization's, and antifungal photodynamic therapy

The article divulges the crystal growth, synthesis, and X-ray structure characterization of one centrosymmetric cadmium complex, [Cd{CdL(μ2-1,3-acetate)}2] using Salen ligand (SL). The complex is further characterized using spectroscopic and analytical techniques, including DRS, SEM-EDX, PXRD, and ICP-MS. The crystallographic study showed that the complex has a monoclinic space P21/c. Addison parameters (Ʈ) show the hexagonal geometry of the central Cd(II) metal ion. Hirshfeld surface and 2-D fingerprint confirm supramolecular contacts despite weak C-H⋯O and C-H···π interactions. Energy frameworks, FMOs, global reactivity parameters, MEP, and energy bandgap explain the complex reactivity outlook. The complex inter- and intramolecular bonding interactions were explored through natural bond orbital (NBO), QTAIM, NCI-RDG, Electron Location Function (ELF), and Localized Orbital Locator (LOL) quantization methods. In addition, the complex and its synthetic components in vitro antibacterial efficacy were investigated using Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbial strains. SAR (structure-activity relationship) correlates with biological potency. Molecular docking assessed antimicrobial potency with proteins S. aureus (PDB ID: 1JIJ), C. albicans (PDB ID: 1M7A), E. coli (PDB ID: 1T9U), P. aeruginosa (PDB ID: 2UV0), and A. Niger (PDB ID: 3K4P). The findings are backed by the Protein-Ligand Interaction Profiler (PLIP). The antifungal potency and cell viability test of C. albicans were conducted using photodynamic therapy (APDT).

Chromone-Based Cd(II) Fluorescent Coordination Polymer Fabricated to Study Optoelectronic and Explosive Sensing Properties

Here, electrical conductivity and explosive sensing properties of multifunctional chromone-Cd(II)-based coordination polymers (CPs) (1-4) have been explored. The presence of different pseudohalide linkers, thiocyanate ions, and dicyanamide ions resulted in 1D and 3D architecture in the CPs. Thin film devices developed from CPs 1-4 (complex-based Schottky devices, CSD1, CSD2, CSD3, and CSD4, respectively) showed semiconductor behavior. Their conductivity values increased under photo illumination (1.37 × 10-5, 1.85 × 10-5, 1.61 × 10-5, and 2.01 × 10-5 S m-1 under dark conditions and 5.06 × 10-5, 8.78 × 10-5, 7.26 × 10-5, and 10.21 × 10-5 S m-1 under light). The nature of the I-V plots of these thin film devices under light irradiation and dark are nonlinear rectifying, which has been observed in Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs). All four CPs (1-4) exhibited highly selective fluorescence quenching-based sensing properties toward well-known explosives, 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The limit of detection (LOD) values are 55, 28, 27, and 31 μM for TNP and 78, 44, 32, and 41 μM for DNP for complexes 1-4, respectively. A structure property correlation has been established to explain optoelectronic and explosive sensing properties.

Fluorescent MOF and Its Gel Composite for the Fluorescence Recovery "Turn-On" Detection of Al3+ Ions and "Turn-Off" Detection of Oxo-Anions

The exploration of smart sensors is of great significance for the selectivity, sensitivity, and ability to show the low detection limit for the target analyte. Here, we have used the linker H2L (5-((anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino)isophthalic acid) for the construction of {[Cd(L)(DMF)(H2O)2]·H2O}n (1) which is in order with the chromophore anthracene moiety and the free -NH functionality as a guest interaction site. This framework showed the luminescence recovery "turn-on" detection of the Al3+ ion in an aqueous solution. An exhaustive mechanism study disclosed that the Lewis acid-base-type interaction between the Al3+ ion and the -NH functionality of the linker in the framework revealed that the absorbance caused an enhancement for the "turn-on" sensing event. Besides the "turn-on" sensing event, the "turn-off" sensing phenomenon of 1 is also noticed when it detects the hazardous oxo-anions (MnO4- and CrO42-) with limit of detection values of 17.08 and 19.91 ppb, respectively. The detection of these diverse analytes are very fast (10 s) and they can also be recognized through a colorimetric response. The sensing mechanisms for these analytes are established by photoinduced electron transfer, Forster resonance energy transfer, and inert filter effect along with theoretical investigation. Furthermore, to show the sensing application of 1 in a versatile podium, a MOF gel composite, 1@AA (AA = Agar-Agar), was developed from 1 with AA. Interestingly, 1@AA showed the colorimetric detection of these analytes under UV light. Therefore, sensor 1 behaves as a smart sensory material for the recognition of the above analytes through a simultaneous "turn-on" and "turn-off" effect.

Hydrogels Loaded with Atorvastatin-Metal Organic Framework Have a Preventive Effect on Coronary Heart Disease

In the research, a new three-dimensional coordination polymer was synthesized by solvothermal method based on the metal ligand LCu =[Cu(2,4-pydca)2 ]2- (2,4-pydca=pyridine-2,4-dicarboxylate) and alkaline-earth ion CaII with chemical composition {[Ca(H2 O)2 ][LCu ]⋅DMSO ⋅ 2H2 O}n (1) (DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide). The complex 1 was characterized soundly by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis (EA), single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Using atorvastatin as drug model, carboxymethyl chitosan and calcium alginate as raw materials, a new type of metal gel particles was prepared. The microstructure of the gel was observed by scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and its modulation effect on the activity of human cardiomyocytes was evaluated. The results show that the gel particles presented a three-dimensional porous structure and were able to significantly up-regulate the cell activity of human cardiomyocytes, which is expected to develop the metal gel particles into drugs for the treatment of coronary heart disease.

Experimental and Theoretical Survey of Intramolecular Spodium Bonds/σ/π-Holes and Noncovalent Interactions in Trinuclear Zn(II)-Salen Type Complex with OCN- Ions: A Holistic View in Crystal Engineering

In this work, one new centrosymmetric trinuclear Zn(II) complex 1, [{(OCN)Zn(L)}2Zn], using a salen-type ligand (H2L) in the presence of OCN- was synthesized and characterized via elemental, spectral, SEM-EDX, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) study. In 1, SCXRD reveals two different stereochemical environments of zinc metal ions; one terminal Zn(II) center adopts square pyramidal geometries with the Addison parameter (τ) 0.095, and the central Zn(II) is tetracoordinated tetrahedral geometry. This article provides evidence of the significance and presence of spodium bonds (SpBs) in solid-state crystal structures involving a pseudotetrahedral environment of the central Zn-atom. X-ray structures reveal intramolecular Zn···O SpBs caused by the methoxy (-OCH3) substituent O-atom adjacent to the coordinated phenoxy O-atom. These noncovalent interactions have been thoroughly studied using density functional theory calculations at the RI-BP86[2]-D3[3]/def2-TZVP level of theory that characterizes the nature of SpBs, including the Baders quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules "QTAIM", molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface, and noncovalent index plot (NCI). In addition, a unique complex-isomer-based theoretical model has been vividly employed to estimate the SpBs energy in the complex. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis also tries to establish the differentiation between σ-hole and π-hole SpBs' natures more authentically. The complex energy frameworks were used to investigate noncovalent interactions. To better understand the different intermolecular interactions, we conducted a Hirshfeld surface, which revealed N···H (15.4%) and O···H (9.1%) contacts and Zn···O (5.1%) (SpBs).

Application Values of Two Cu(II) Schiff Base Coordination Complexes on Blue Fluorescent Materials

Two Schiff base binuclear Cu(II) compounds, [Cu2(L)2·(H2O)2]·2DMF (1) together with its coordination polymer (CP) [Cu2(L)2·(4,4'-bpy)2]n (2) (H2L is 4-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxy-5-mercaptobenzylidene)amino)-2H-chromen-2-one and 4,4'-bpy is 4,4'-bipyridine), were generated under an identical experimental environment in the absence and existence of auxiliary ligand 4,4'-bpy. Fluorescence spectroscopy testing shows that the ligand-based blue fluorescence emission offers potential for application as a blue photoluminescent material.

A Zn(II) coordination polymer as a dual sensor for ppb level detection of antibiotics and organo-toxins in a green solvent

Herein, we describe the synthesis of a new fluorescent d¹⁰ coordination polymer, [Zn₂(CFDA)₂(BPEP)]_n·nDMF (CP-1) under solvothermal reaction condition using zinc metal ion. In CP-1, Zn(II) ion along with CFDA and BPED ligand forms a 2-fold self-interpenetrated 3D coordination polymers. This CP-1 is characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectra, optical microscope image and thermogravimetric analysis and the framework is found to maintain its structural stability in different solvents. The framework (CP-1) detected antibiotics (NFT (nitrofurantoin) and NZF (nitrofurazone)) and organo-toxin trinitrophenol in aqueous dispersed medium. Apart from the fast responsive (10 s), the detection limit for them was found at ppb level. The detection of these organo-aromatics were also comprehended by the colorimetric response through solid, solution and low cost paper strip technique i.e., triple mode recognition capability. The probe is re-usable without changing in its sensing efficiency and in addition, it has been applied for the detection of these analytes in the real field specimens (soil, river water, human urine and commercial tablet). The sensing ability is established by in-depth experimental analysis and the life time measurement where mechanism such as photo induced electron transfer (PET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), inner filter effect (IFE) was recognized. The presence of guest interaction sites on the linker backbone in CP-1 induces diverse supramolecular interaction with the targeted analytes results to bring them in proximity for the occurrence of these sensing mechanism. The Stern-Volmer quenching constant values of CP-1 for the targeted analytes are admirable and the low detection limit (LOD) values for NFT, NZF and TNP are found to be 34.54, 67.79 and 43.93 ppb respectively. Further, the DFT theory is carried out in details to justify the sensing mechanism.

Synthesis, spectroscopic investigation, molecular docking, ADME/T toxicity predictions, and DFT study of two trendy ortho vanillin-based scaffolds

In this article, we have synthesized two contemporary ortho-vanillin-based Salen-type ligands (H₂L¹/H₂L²) characterized by modern spectroscopic tools. EDX analysis supports the elemental composition (C, N, O, and Br). SEM examined the morphology of the synthesized compounds. The molecular geometry was optimized in the gas phase using B3LYP-D3/6-311G (d, p) level. The global reactivity parameters, HOMO-LUMO energy gap (Δ), atomic properties, MESP, and ADME/T, vividly explore the chemical reactivity and toxicity of two Salen-type ligands. The DFT simulated IR/NMR characterized essential structural assignments, and UV-Visible spectra were employed to predict the optical properties. The article demonstrated in silico molecular docking against the Gm + ve Bacillus subtilis (6UF6), and Gm -ve Proteus Vulgaris establishes the ligand binding ability with essential amino acids through conventional H-bonding or other significant interactions. The docking simulation is compared for two compounds better than the control drugs and confirms the antimicrobial activity. The theoretical drug-like properties have been explored in-depth by ADME/T using the SWISSADME database. The analysis estimated the molecule's lipophilicity, the consensus P0/W, and water solubility. Thus, using various pharmaco-logical parameters, toxicity explains where the electron-withdrawing Br group plays a more toxic effect in H₂L² than in H₂L¹.

Selective Low-Level Detection of a Perilous Nitroaromatic Compound Using Tailor-Made Cd(II)-Based Coordination Polymers: Study of Photophysical Properties and Effect of Functional Groups

Three coordination polymers (CPs 1-3) are prepared based on diverse electron-donating properties and coordination arrangements of conjugated ligands. Interestingly, this is also reflected in their photophysical properties. The distinguishable high emissive nature of the luminescent coordination polymer shows its potentiality toward the detection of the perilous substance 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid (PA). TNP has a higher propensity among explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) due to its significant π···π interaction with the free benzene moieties present in the CPs. Among CPs 1-3, 2 exhibits the highest sensitivity and selectivity toward TNP because of the most favorable π-π stacking with the conjugated organic linker. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) and corresponding quenching constant (K_SV) from the Stern-Volmer (SV) plot for 1, 2, and 3 are found to be 0.68 μM and 7.49 × 10⁴ M^-1, 0.41 μM and 8.01 × 10⁴ M^-1, and 1.18 μM and 8.1 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism is also highly influenced by their structure and coordination arrangement.

Highly Luminescent MOF and Its In Situ Fabricated Sustainable Corn Starch Gel Composite as a Fluoro-Switchable Reversible Sensor Triggered by Antibiotics and Oxo-Anions

Frequent use of antibiotics and the growth of industry lead to the pollution of several natural resources which is one of the major consequences for fatality to human health. Exploration of smart sensing materials is highly anticipated for ultrasensitive detection of those hazardous organics. The robust porous hydrogen bonded network encompassing a free-NH₂ moiety, Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (1), is used for the selective detection of antibiotics and toxic oxo-anions at the ppb level. The framework is able to detect the electronically dissimilar antibiotic sulfadiazine and nitrofurazone via fluorescence "turn-on" and "turn-off" processes, respectively. The antibiotic-triggered reversible fluoro-switching phenomena (fluorescence "on-off-on") are also observed by using the fluorimetric method. An extensive theoretical investigation was performed to establish the fluoro-switching response of 1, triggered by a class of antibiotics and also the sensing of oxo-anions. This investigation reveals that the interchange of the HOMO-LUMO energy levels of fluorophore and analytes is responsible for such a fluoro-switchable sensing activity. Sensor 1 showed the versatile detection ability which is reflected by the detection of a carcinogenic nitro-group-containing drug "roxarsone". In view of the sustainable environment along with quick-responsive merit of 1, an in situ MOF gel composite (1@CS; CS = corn starch) is prepared using 1 and CS due to its useful potential features such as biocompatibility, toxicologically innocuous, good flexibility, and low commercial price. The MOF composite exhibited visual detection of the above analytes as well as antibiotic-triggered reversible fluoro-switchable colorimetric "on-off-on" response. Therefore, 1@CS represents a promising smart sensing material for monitoring of the antibiotics and oxo-anions, particularly appropriate for the real-field analysis of carcinogenic drug molecule "roxarsone" in food specimens.

Highly regenerative, fast colorimetric response for organo-toxin and oxo-anions in an aqueous medium using a discrete luminescent Cd(II) complex in a heterogeneous manner with theoretical revelation

The highly luminescent complex [CdQ₂(H₂O)₂] (1) shows ultra-selectivity and high sensitivity to the explosive organo-toxin trinitrophenol (TNP). This detection is extremely fast with a high quenching constant (5.3 × 10⁴ M^-1) and a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 137 nM/59 ppb. This motivated us to detect the lethal carcinogenic arsenical drug roxarsone (ROX), which is reported here for the first time. The quenching constant and LOD for ROX using 1 were found to be 4.9 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 86 nM (or 37 ppb), respectively. Moreover, the probe also recognizes three lethal toxic oxo-anions (MnO₄^-, Cr₂O₇^2- and CrO₄^2-) with outstanding quenching constant (2.2 × 10⁴ M^-1, 1.4 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 1.1 × 10⁴ M^-1) and very low LODs (141 nM/61 ppb, 178 nM/78 ppb and 219 nM/95 ppb). Compared to the previously reported homogeneous sensing nature of the discrete complexes, our complex showed the detection of toxic pollutants in a heterogeneous manner, which results in high recyclability and hence multi-cycle sensing capability. Interestingly, 1 shows the possibility for real-time monitoring through naked eye detection by visible colorimetric changes in solid, solution and strip paper methods, i.e., triphasic detection ability. In addition, the sensor also exhibited the cross-sensing ability for these pollutants. The experimental sensing mechanism is strongly supported by the exhaustive theoretical investigation. Based on the fluorescence signal shown by each analyte, an integrated AND-OR logic gate is constructed. Furthermore, the sensing ability of 1 remains intact towards the detection of versatile real field samples including lethal carcinogenic arsenical drug roxarsone in the real food sample.

Synthesis, spectroscopic findings and crystal engineering of Pb(ii)-Salen coordination polymers, and supramolecular architectures engineered by σ-hole/spodium/tetrel bonds: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation

Spontaneous self-assembly is one of the available synthetic routes to achieve structurally versatile and unique crystal complexes with selected metal-ligand combinations in the spirit of pseudohalides. In this endeavour, we designed a novel 1D coordination polymer (CP), [(Cd)(Pb)(L)(η¹-NCS)(η¹-SCN)] _n (1), using a compartmental Salen ligand (H₃L) in the presence of NaSCN. The characterization of the CP was accomplished using several spectroscopic techniques: MALDI-TOF, PXRD, SEM, EDX mapping, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The CP crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c with Z = 4. SCXRD reveals Cd(ii) and Pb(ii) metal ions fulfilled distorted square pyramidal and hemi-directed coordination spheres. Cd(ii) is placed in the inner N₂O₂ and heavier Pb(ii) in the outer O₄ compartments of the de-protonated form of the ligand [L]^2-. Supramolecular interactions in the intricate crystal structure produced attractive molecular architectures of the compound. The flexible aliphatic -OH pendent group coordinates with the Pb(ii) ions. This unique binding further elevates the supramolecular crystal topographies. The supramolecular interactions were authenticated by Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA). The observation of the recurring unconventional tetrel bonds was rationalized by DFT calculations and surface plots of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). In the 1D polymeric chain in the complex, the O-atom of the -OH groups shows a tetrel bonding interaction with the Pb atom. We have found that the combination of QTAIM/NCI and QTAIM/ELF plots helps reveal the nature of these contacts. Moreover, the QTAIM/ELF plot determines the donor-acceptor interaction between the O-atom and the Pb atom, establishing the σ-hole. Agreeably, the σ-hole interaction also helps Pb(ii) serve as a Lewis acid in the complex. Finally, spodium and tetrel bonds are formed, possible thanks to a hemi-directional coordination sphere of the Pb atoms in the polymer described.

Cd (II) coordination polymer as a strip based fluorescence sensor for sensing Fe3+ ions in aqueous system

The design and construction of a sensor that can sensitively and conveniently recognize metal ions are essential for the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this work, {[Cd₄(HL)₂(pyp)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O·1.5Diox}_n (1) was synthesized under solvothermal condition and presented a 2D 3,5-connected layered network with the point symbol of {3.4.5} {3².4.5.6².7⁴}, which was coated on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to construct a novel paper sensor (1@PVDF). Meanwhile, the stability of 1@PVDF was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, fluorescence sensing experiments of 1@PVDF sensor for cations in aqueous system indicated that it has high sensitivity for sensing Fe³⁺ ions with the detection limit (DL) of 4.0 × 10^-8 M. By the characterization of PXRD, UV-vis spectra, ICP, XPS, time-resolved excited-state decay measurements, the sensing mechanisms of 1@PVDF for Fe³⁺ ions were attributed to the competitive absorption and interaction between 1 and Fe³⁺. And the sensing process of 1@PVDF for Fe³⁺ ions was static in the Fe³⁺ concentration of 0 to 0.05 mM. In addition, the binding energies of Fe³⁺ and Zn²⁺ with the framework of 1 were calculated by density functional theory (DFT), which further proved that there was an obvious interaction between Fe³⁺ and the uncoordinated O atom in 1. Based on the thin film technology, a portable and convenient paper-based probe has been developed for practical applications.

Two state “ON–OFF” NLO switch based on coordination complexes of iron and cobalt containing isomeric ligand: a DFT study

Coordination complexes are interesting materials for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications due to their large hyperpolarizability values. Moreover, switchable NLO response is also important in coordination complexes. Herein, we report two state ON–OFF switchable NLO contrast of coordination complexes of Fe and Co containing isomeric ligands. The optical, UV-visible, and electronic properties besides the “ON–OFF” switching effect are calculated using the CAM-B3LYP/6-31+G (d) method. The NLO responses of ligand–metal isomers are qualitatively evaluated through variation in charge transference (CT) style through TD-DFT. The higher β_o in each isomeric pair is strongly dependent on the HOMO–LUMO gap. The isomer 4b with lowest HOMO–LUMO gap shows the highest NLO response. The charge transfer pattern in these complexes results in variation of their β_o values. The notable β_o contrast of 21.15 in isomeric pairs 3a and 3b makes these complexes a favorable material for genuine NLO switches. Hence, the outcome of the current investigation reveals that these ligand–metal isomeric complexes exhibit a two-state switch “ON–OFF” effect.

New dinuclear zinc(ii) complexes with Schiff bases obtained from o-phenylenediamine and their application as fluorescent materials in spin coating deposition

Two Zn(ii) complexes, K1 and K2, obtained from the template reaction of zinc(ii) acetate dihydrate with o-phenylenediamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde (K1) or 2-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (K2), respectively, were characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (UV-vis, fluorescence and IR), and thermal methods. In the complex [Zn₂(MeO)_1.4(OH)_0.6(L1)]·2H₂O K1, there are two binding sites in the macrocyclic ligand and they are occupied by zinc(ii) cations found in slightly distorted square pyramidal environment. The zinc(ii) cations are connected by slightly asymmetric oxo bridges with a Zn1–O14–Zn1[−x, −y + 1, −z + 1] angle of 104.8(2)°. In the dimer [Zn₂(CH₃COO)₂(L2)]·2EtOH K2, there are two crystallographically independent binding sites both occupied by zinc(ii) cations. There is a significant difference between both complexes, since in K1 only one site is independent and the second is occupied due to the application of symmetry rules, and the geometry of both sites is identical. Thin layers of the obtained Zn(ii) complexes were deposited on Si(111) by the spin coating method and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), fluorescence spectroscopy and ellipsometry. In the non-absorbing range, the value of the refractive index exhibits normal dispersion between 1.8 and 2.1 for K1_1–K1_3; and between 2.3 and 2.6 for the K2 series of samples established for long wavelengths (longer than 500 nm). The Zn(ii) complexes and their thin layers exhibited fluorescence between 534–573 nm and 495–572 nm for the compounds and the layers, respectively. The highest quantum yield of fluorescence was achieved for K2 in benzene and in the solid state ϕ = 0.78 and 0.58, respectively. The influence of the solvent polarity on the fluorescence properties of the obtained complexes was studied. Additionally, DFT calculations were performed to explain the structures and electronic spectral properties of the complexes.

Tin fluorescent materials were obtained using a spin coating method.
