Abstract
Utilizing visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy in conjunction with chemometrics methods has been widespread for identifying plant diseases. However, a key obstacle involves the extraction of relevant spectral characteristics. This study aimed to enhance sugarcane disease recognition by combining convolutional neural network (CNN) with continuous wavelet transform (CWT) spectrograms for spectral features extraction within the Vis-NIR spectra (380-1400 nm) to improve the accuracy of sugarcane diseases recognition. Using 130 sugarcane leaf samples, the obtained one-dimensional CWT coefficients from Vis-NIR spectra were transformed into two-dimensional spectrograms. Employing CNN, spectrogram features were extracted and incorporated into decision tree, K-nearest neighbour, partial least squares discriminant analysis, and random forest (RF) calibration models. The RF model, integrating spectrogram-derived features, demonstrated the best performance with an average precision of 0.9111, sensitivity of 0.9733, specificity of 0.9791, and accuracy of 0.9487. This study may offer a non-destructive, rapid, and accurate means to detect sugarcane diseases, enabling farmers to receive timely and actionable insights on the crops' health, thus minimizing crop loss and optimizing yields.

Abstract
During food quality control, NIR technology enables the rapid and non-destructive determination of the typical quality characteristics of food categories, their origin, and the detection of potential counterfeits. Over the past 20 years, the NIR results for a variety of food groups-including meat and meat products, milk and milk products, baked goods, pasta, honey, vegetables, fruits, and luxury items like coffee, tea, and chocolate-have been compiled. This review aims to give a broad overview of the NIRS processes that have been used thus far to assist researchers employing non-destructive techniques in comparing their findings with earlier data and determining new research directions.

Abstract
Gastrodia elata (GE) is traditionally subjected to steaming, and steaming duration plays a crucially important role in determining GE quality. This study examined the variations in bioactive components during the steaming process and proposed the utilization of electronic eye and Fourier Transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy for quality assessment. The findings revealed that the levels of parishin E parishin B, parishin A, and gastrodin initially rose and subsequently declined, while 4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol exhibited a rapid decrease followed by stabilization. With prolonged steaming, the brightness of GE decreased, while the red and yellow tones became more pronounced and the color saturation increased. FT-NIR divided the steaming process into three stages: 0 min (raw GE), 0-9 min (partially steamed GE), and 9-30 min (fully steamed GE), and the partial least squares regression models effectively predicted the levels of five components. Overall, this study provided valuable insights into quality control in food processing.

Abstract
Spectroscopy in the visible and near-infrared region (Vis-NIR) region has proven to be an effective technique for quantifying the chlorophyll contents of plants, which serves as an important indicator of their photosynthetic rate and health status. However, the Vis-NIR spectroscopy analysis confronts a significant challenge concerning the existence of spectral variations and interferences induced by diverse factors. Hence, the selection of characteristic wavelengths plays a crucial role in Vis-NIR spectroscopy analysis. In this study, a novel wavelength selection approach known as the modified regression coefficient (MRC) selection method was introduced to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of chlorophyll content in sugarcane leaves. Experimental data comprising spectral reflectance measurements (220-1400 nm) were collected from sugarcane leaf samples at different growth stages, including seedling, tillering, and jointing, and the corresponding chlorophyll contents were measured. The proposed MRC method was employed to select optimal wavelengths for analysis, and subsequent partial least squares regression (PLSR) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) models were developed to establish the relationship between the selected wavelengths and the measured chlorophyll contents. In comparison to full-spectrum modelling and other commonly employed wavelength selection techniques, the proposed simplified MRC-GPR model, utilizing a subset of 291 selected wavelengths, demonstrated superior performance. The MRC-GPR model achieved higher coefficient of determination of 0.9665 and 0.8659, and lower root mean squared error of 1.7624 and 3.2029, for calibration set and prediction set, respectively. Results showed that the GPR model, a nonlinear regression approach, outperformed the PLSR model.

Abstract
As the raw material for tea making, the quality of tea leaves directly affects the quality of finished tea. The quality of fresh tea leaves is mainly assessed by manual judgment or physical and chemical testing of the content of internal components. Physical and chemical methods are more mature, and the test results are more accurate and objective, but traditional chemical methods for measuring the biochemical indexes of tea leaves are time-consuming, labor-costly, complicated, and destructive. With the rapid development of imaging and spectroscopic technology, spectroscopic technology as an emerging technology has been widely used in rapid non-destructive testing of the quality and safety of agricultural products. Due to the existence of spectral information with a low signal-to-noise ratio, high information redundancy, and strong autocorrelation, scholars have conducted a series of studies on spectral data preprocessing. The correlation between spectral data and target data is improved by smoothing noise reduction, correction, extraction of feature bands, and so on, to construct a stable, highly accurate estimation or discrimination model with strong generalization ability. There have been more research papers published on spectroscopic techniques to detect the quality of tea fresh leaves. This study summarizes the principles, analytical methods, and applications of Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the nondestructive testing of the quality and safety of fresh tea leaves for the purpose of tracking the latest research advances at home and abroad. At the same time, the principles and applications of other spectroscopic techniques including Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and other spectroscopic techniques for non-destructive testing of quality and safety of fresh tea leaves are also briefly introduced. Finally, in terms of technical obstacles and practical applications, the challenges and development trends of spectral analysis technology in the nondestructive assessment of tea leaf quality are examined.

Abstract
Wavelength selection is crucial to the success of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy analysis as it considerably improves the generalization of the multivariate model and reduces model complexity. This study proposes a new wavelength selection method, interval flower pollination algorithm (iFPA), for spectral variable selection in the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. The proposed iFPA consists of three phases. First, the flower pollination algorithm is applied to search for informative spectral variables, followed by variable elimination. Subsequently, the iFPA performs a local search to determine the best continuous interval spectral variables. The interpretability of the selected variables is assessed on three public NIR datasets (corn, diesel and soil datasets). Performance comparison with other competing wavelength selection methods shows that the iFPA used in conjunction with the PLSR model gives better prediction performance, with the root mean square error of prediction values of 0.0096-0.0727, 0.0015-3.9717 and 1.3388-29.1144 are obtained for various responses in corn, diesel and soil datasets, respectively.

Abstract
The proliferation of pathogenic fungi in sugarcane crops poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity and economic sustainability. Early identification and management of sugarcane diseases are therefore crucial to mitigate the adverse impacts of these pathogens. In this study, visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (380-1400 nm) combined with a novel wavelength selection method, referred to as modified flower pollination algorithm (MFPA), was utilized for sugarcane disease recognition. The selected wavelengths were incorporated into machine learning models, including Naïve Bayes, random forest, and support vector machine (SVM). The developed simplified SVM model, which utilized the MFPA wavelength selection method yielded the best performances, achieving a precision value of 0.9753, a sensitivity value of 0.9259, a specificity value of 0.9524, and an accuracy of 0.9487. These results outperformed those obtained by other wavelength selection approaches, including the selectivity ratio, variable importance in projection, and the baseline method of the flower pollination algorithm.

Abstract
Lushan Yunwu Tea is one of a unique Chinese tea series, and total polyphenols (TP), free amino acids (FAA), and polyphenols-to-amino acids ratio models (TP/FAA) represent its most important taste-related indicators. In this work, a feasibility study was proposed to simultaneously predict the authenticity identification and taste-related indicators of Lushan Yunwu tea, using near-infrared spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis. Different waveband selections and spectral pre-processing methods were compared during the discriminant analysis (DA) and partial least squares (PLS) model-building process. The DA model achieved optimal performance in distinguishing Lushan Yunwu tea from other non-Lushan Yunwu teas, with a correct classification rate of up to 100%. The synergy interval partial least squares (siPLS) and backward interval partial least squares (biPLS) algorithms showed considerable advantages in improving the prediction performance of TP, FAA, and TP/FAA. The siPLS algorithms achieved the best prediction results for TP (RP = 0.9407, RPD = 3.00), FAA (RP = 0.9110, RPD = 2.21) and TP/FAA (RP = 0.9377, RPD = 2.90). These results indicated that NIR spectroscopy was a useful and low-cost tool by which to offer definitive quantitative and qualitative analysis for Lushan Yunwu tea.

Abstract
S-ovalbumin content is an indicator of egg freshness and has an important impact on the quality of processed foods. The objective of this study is to develop simplified models for monitoring the S-ovalbumin content of eggs during storage using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and multivariate analysis. The hyperspectral images of egg samples at different storage periods were collected in the wavelength range of 401–1002 nm, and the reference S-ovalbumin content was determined by spectrophotometry. The standard normal variate (SNV) was employed to preprocess the raw spectral data. To simplify the calibration models, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) was applied to select feature wavelengths from the whole spectral range. Based on the full and feature wavelengths, partial least squares regression (PLSR) and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) models were developed, in which the simplified LSSVM model yielded the best performance with a coefficient of determination for prediction (R2P) of 0.918 and a root mean square error for prediction (RMSEP) of 7.215%. By transferring the quantitative model to the pixels of hyperspectral images, the visualizing distribution maps were generated, providing an intuitive and comprehensive evaluation for the S-ovalbumin content of eggs, which helps to understand the conversion of ovalbumin into S-ovalbumin during storage. The results provided the possibility of implementing a multispectral imaging technique for online monitoring the S-ovalbumin content of eggs.

Abstract
In the paper based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG), a novel algorithm is proposed, which facilitates demodulation of surrounding refractive index (SRI) via cladding mode interrogation and accelerates calibration and measurement of SRI. Refractive indices with a tiny index step of 2.2 × 10−5 are prepared by the dilution of glucose aqueous solution for the test and the calibration of this fiber sensor probe. To accelerate the calibration process, automatic selection of the most sensitive cladding mode is demonstrated. First, peaks of transmitted spectrum are identified and numbered. Then, sensitivities of several potentially sensitive cladding modes in amplitude adjacent to the left of the SPR area are calculated and compared. After that, we focus on the amplitudes of the cladding modes as a function of a SRI, and the highest sensitivity of −6887 dB/RIU (refractive index unit) is obtained with a scanning time of 15.77 s in the range from 1520 nm to 1620 nm. To accelerate the scanning speed of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), the wavelength resolution is reduced from 0.028 nm to 0.07 nm, 0.14 nm, and 0.28 nm, and consequently the scanning time is shortened to 6.31 s, 3.15 s, and 1.58 s, respectively. However, compared to 0.028 nm, the SRI sensitivity for 0.07 nm, 0.14 nm, and 0.28 nm is reduced to −5685 dB/RIU (17.5% less), −5415 dB/RIU (21.4% less), and −4359 dB/RIU (36.7% less), respectively. Thanks to the calculation of parabolic equation and weighted Gauss fitting based on the original data, the sensitivity is improved to −6332 dB/RIU and −6721 dB/RIU, respectively, for 0.07 nm, and the sensitivity is increased to −5850 dB/RIU and −6228 dB/RIU, respectively, for 0.14 nm.
