Abstract
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a key biomarker for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment. Monitoring LDL for the early diagnosis of CVD and its complications is an important clinical analysis tool. In this work, a novel colorimetric aptasensor for LDL detection was constructed via reduced graphene oxide@molybdenum disulfide-ferrocene-carboxylic nanosheets (rGO@MoS2-Fc) with excellent peroxidase-like activity. On this basis, the LDL aptamer (LDLapt) immobilized on the surface of rGO@MoS2-Fc served as a signal probe (rGO@MoS2-Fc/LDLapt), while the unmodified LDLapt served as a capture probe. When LDL was present, it was recognized by the LDLapt and rGO@MoS2-Fc/LDLapt to form an rGO@MoS2-Fc/LDLapt/LDL/LDLapt sandwich-type conjugate with excellent enzymatic catalytic properties that can catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which in turn oxidized the colorless substrate o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to the yellow compound 2,3-diamino phenothiazine (DAP). In addition, the catalytic mechanism of the reaction was confirmed to be induced by ·OH through free radical experiments. The aptasensor had a linear range of 15.0 to 200.0 μg mL-1, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.199 μg mL-1. Overall, the assay has high selectivity, sensitivity and operability, showing broad application prospects in the clinical diagnosis of CVD.

Abstract
The trace amount of water in organic solvents can affect the progress of chemical reactions, which will adversely affect chemical production in many industries, resulting in a doubling of costs. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) with abundant polar groups were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CDs showed superior dispersibility and fluorescence performance compared to the CDs that have been reported for the detection of water content in organic solvents. It can realize the fluorescence detection of trace water in several water-soluble organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, ethanol and methanol with wide linear range (0 %-100 %) and high sensitivity. This will provide a powerful tool for the rapid detection of water content in organic solvents in chemical production.

Abstract
Histamine is a highly toxic biogenic amine in food, making its sensitive and rapid detection methods vital for the assurance of edible safety and human health. Here, we explored for the first time a smartphone-enabled ratiometric imprinted fluorescence sensor based on blue/orange MXene quantum dots (MQDs) for fluorescence and visual detection of histamine. A linear relationship between the concentration of histamine and the fluorescence response of the sensor was found in the range of 1-60 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 21.9 nM for fluorescence detection and 92.2 nM for visual detection. In addition, the method was validated for the detection of real samples with excellent recoveries from 96.52% to 105.32%. Therefore, this work greatly expands the application of MQDs in the fluorescence sensing field, as well as provides a visual strategy for in-situ detection of histamine in food.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (N-CNDs) were synthesized simply and efficiently using glutathione. The fluorescence emission of N-CNDs at 430 nm was effectively quenched by the fluorophore 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP), produced through the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) under the catalysis of Cr(VI)/Ag(I). This quenching was attributed to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect, while a new fluorescence emission at 560 nm was observed. Furthermore, the redox and chromogenic reaction of Cr(VI) and OPD at pH 5.4 could be effectively inhibited by formaldehyde (HCHO), resulting in the activation of N-CNDs fluorescence and the quenching of DAP fluorescence. Consequently, dual-signal sensing platforms for the rapid analysis of Cr(VI) and Ag(I) using N-CNDs/OPD and HCHO using N-CNDs/OPD/Cr(VI) were successfully constructed. By incorporating a masking reagent such as H2O2 for Cr(VI) and Cl- for Ag(I), the established sensing platform exhibited excellent selectivity and practical applicability for detecting Cr(VI), Ag(I), and HCHO in food and environmental samples.

Abstract
4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is an extremely poisonous and carcinogenic phenol that poses serious health issues to humans. Therefore, it becomes highly demanded and urgent to determine 4-NP in water samples. In this study, we developed a facile and effective dually-emissive nanosensor containing simply mixed CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) and N, S modified graphene quantum dots (N, S-GQDs) for 4-NP. The synthesized CdTe QDs and N, S-GQDs exhibited excitation-independent emission located at 540 nm and 420 nm, respectively. The nanosensor displayed two turn-off fluorescent signals when exposed to 4-NP. The degree of quenching varied depending on the excitation wavelength range used, which can be explained by the quenching phenomenon based on the inner filter effect (IFE). Moreover, analysis of the recorded excitation-emission matrix (EEM) data using the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) technique revealed a negative emission spectrum corresponding to non-emissive 4-NP. On the other hand, the species with no peak in fluorescence data had a negative spectrum as the PARAFAC emission loading. Under the optimized conditions, the CdTe QDs@GQD nanosensor achieved fast and highly sensitive detection of 4-NP within the concentration range of 0.0-30.0 μM, with a detection limit of 0.52 μΜ.

Abstract
Fluorescent bovine serum albumin-protected gold nanoclusters (BSA@Au NCs) can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce blue oxTMB for its peroxidase-like activity. The two absorption peaks of oxTMB overlapped with the excitation and emission peaks of BSA@Au NCs, respectively, causing efficient quenching on the fluorescence of BSA@Au NCs. The quenching mechanism can be attributed to the dual inner filter effect (IFE). Based on the dual IFE, BSA@Au NCs were utilized as both peroxidase mimics and fluorescent reporters for H2O2 detection and further for uric acid detection with uricase. Under optimal detection conditions, the method can be used to detect H2O2 ranging 0.50-50 μM with a detection limit of 0.44 μM and UA ranging 0.50-50 μM with a detection limit of 0.39 μM. The established method had been successfully utilized for the determination of UA in human urine, with massive potential in biomedical applications.

Abstract
Cascade reactions catalyzed by natural uricase and mimic peroxidase (MPOD) have been applied for uric acid (UA) detection. However, the optimal catalytic activity of MPOD is mostly in acidic conditions (pH 2-5), mismatching the optimal catalytic alkaline environment of uricase. In this paper, using CuSO4 and urea as raw materials, a MPOD with high catalytic activity in alkaline environment was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Then, based on coupling reaction of uricase/UA/MPOD/guaiacol (GA) system, a novel spectrophotometric method was established to detect 5-60 μmol/L UA (limit of detection = 3.14 μmol/L (S/N = 3)) and accurately quantified serum UA (275.6 ± 39.9 μmol/L, n = 5) with 95-105% of standard addition recovery. The results were consistent with commercial UA kit (p > 0.05). The MPOD could replace natural POD to reduce the cost of UA detection due to simple preparation and cheap raw materials, and is expected to achieve the specific detection of some substances, like glucose and cholesterol, combined with glucose oxidase and cholesterol oxidase.

Abstract
In previous reports, carbon dots (CDs) were customarily used as fluorescent probes to detect heavy metal ions. However, scientists neglected to take advantage of the excellent UV absorption properties of CDs to detect heavy metal ions. Herein, we synthesized nitrogen-containing carbon polymer dots (N-CPDs) for the determination of Co2+ ions in water samples by a one-step hydrothermal method using l-histidine and ethylene imine polymer as raw materials. The N-CPDs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectrum (UV-vis), infrared spectrum (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. They possess superior full-band UV absorption performance and the surface is rich in multifunctional groups such as -COOH, -CN-, -OH, etc. When Co2+ was added to N-CPDs solution, the color of the solution rapidly changed from colorless to yellow-brown, which was visible to the naked eye. The UV absorption intensity of N-CPDs changed, and the fluorescence was instantly quenched, due to the formation of chelate between Co2+ and N-CPDs, and the FRET process occurred. The detection of Co2+ showed good linearity for both fluorescence and UV absorption spectroscopy modes in the range of 0-200 μM, and the limit of detection were 1.0023 μM and 0.75 μM, respectively. These two methods have the advantages of simple operation, remarkable selectivity and small sample size, which can be applied to the field detection of Co2+ in water samples. It is possible to develop the UV absorption properties of CDs to detect the ions.

Abstract
Malachite green (MG) is a synthetic poisonous organic compound that has been banned in many countries as a veterinary drug for aquaculture. An efficient, fast and sensitive method is urgently needed for monitoring the illegal use of malachite green (MG) in aquaculture. In this study, a novel ratiometric fluorescence immunoassay was established. Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots were used as ratiometric fluorescent probes with a fluorescence peak at 450 nm. Horseradish peroxidase was employed to convert o-phenylenediamine to 2,3-diaminophenazine, with a new fluorescence peak at 580 nm and a strong absorption at 420 nm. The inner filter effect between N-CQD fluorescence and DAP absorption was identified. It allows for the ratiometric detection of MG using a fluorescent immunoassay. The results demonstrated a linear ratiometric fluorescence response for MG between 0.1 and 12.8 ng·mL-1. The limit of detection of this method was verified to be 0.097 μg·kg-1 with recoveries ranging from 81.88 to 108%, and the relative standard deviations were below 3%. Furthermore, this method exhibited acceptable consistency with the LC-MS/MS results when applied for MG screening in real samples. These results demonstrated a promising application of this novel ratiometric fluorescence immunoassay for MG screening with the merits of rapid detection, simple sample preparation, and stable signal readout. It can be an alternative to other traditional methods if there are difficulties in the availability of expensive instruments, and achieve comparable results or even more sensitivity than other reported methods.

We have presented a hydrothermal approach for synthesizing fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (F-SiNPs) with yellow-green emission. The obtained F-SiNPs exhibited excellent stability and good biocompatibility. By virtue of the specific reaction between S2- and 5,5'-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB), colorimetric assay of S2- was realized with a good linear range of 0-100 μM. The colorimetric detection system could be further combined with F-SiNPs to construct a probe for fluorescence turn-off sensing S2- in aqueous solution due to inner filter effect. In the fluorescent detection system, a good linearity with S2- concentration in the range of 0-50 μM was accomplished. And as low as 0.1 μM S2- was successfully detected. Moreover, the F-SiNPs displayed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, and was further utilized for cell imaging. These results demonstrated the promising applications of F-SiNPs in S2- analysis and bioimaging.

Abstract
Bright yellow-green carbon quantum dots (YGCDs) have been successfully synthesized by a simple and efficient hydrothermal method. Its luminescent absolute quantum yield reached 30.0% in 4 h, compared with that using common reported solvothermal method, the synthesis time was reduced more than 70% with tin oxide nano particles as a catalyst. Moreover, the fluorescence of YGCDs could be selectively quenched by folic acid (FA) molecules, and the relative fluorescence intensities of F/F0 was fitted perfectly in line decay curve versus the concentration of FA in the range of 2.0 × 10-8 mol/l ~ 1.0 × 10-5 mol/l (R2 = 0.9988). The detection limit of FA was below 2.0 × 10-8 mol/l, suggesting a promising fluorescent probe of folic acid.

Abstract
Fluorescent N-doped carbon nanodots (CNDs) are a type of environmentally friendly nanomaterial that is promising for application in cell imaging and optoelectronics. In this paper, a natural amino acid (l-glutamic acid) was used as a precursor, and two different morphological and structured N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a one-step ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method at 230 and 250 °C. Various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques were employed to characterize the morphology, structure, optical properties, and stability of the CQDs. The results showed that N-CQDs-1 are new CNDs composed of amorphous carbon with a large amount of pyroglutamic acid, and N-CQDs-2 are composed of pure amorphous carbon. The CQDs exhibit excellent optical properties, such as 40.5% quantum yield, strong photobleaching resistance, and superior photostability. Combining the fluorescence lifetimes and radiative and non-radiative decay constants, the photoluminescence mechanism of the CQDs was qualitatively explained. The two CQDs were used for BV2 cell imaging and showed good results, implying the ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal approach as a facile method to obtain structure- and morphology-controllable N-doped CQDs with prospect for application in cell imaging.
