Plasmon-driven photocatalytic properties based on the surface of gold nanostar particles

Study of two-dimensional information writing, reading and error correction at micro/nanoscale based on gold nanosphere arrays

Surface plasmon driven photocatalytic reactions have great potential for information encryption as well as information security. In this paper, explored the detection concentrations of dye molecule Rhodamine6G (R6G) on three substrates, where complete original Raman spectra signals were still obtained at a concentration of 10-8 M. Utilized photosensitive molecules to investigate the photocatalytic characteristics of 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT) on three substrates. Excitation light at a wavelength of 633 nm enables local photocatalytic for information signals writing, while 785 nm wavelength excitation light combined with two-dimensional Mapping technology is used for information signal reading. Read information signals are often prone to reading errors due to their own lack of resolution or strong interference from back bottom signals, so error correction processing of information signals is essential. Through comparative exploration, it is found that the ratio method can obtain high-precision and high-resolution information signals, and the interference of the background signals were well suppressed. Leveraging the advantages of Raman fingerprint spectra at the micro/nanoscale, it solves the challenge of incomplete information signals presentation at smaller scales. Additionally, through error correction processing of the information signals, high precision and high-resolution information signals are obtained.

A review of recent advances in the use of complex metal nanostructures for biomedical applications from diagnosis to treatment

Complex metal nanostructures represent an exceptional category of materials characterized by distinct morphologies and physicochemical properties. Nanostructures with shape anisotropies, such as nanorods, nanostars, nanocages, and nanoprisms, are particularly appealing due to their tunable surface plasmon resonances, controllable surface chemistries, and effective targeting capabilities. These complex nanostructures can absorb light in the near-infrared, enabling noteworthy applications in nanomedicine, molecular imaging, and biology. The engineering of targeting abilities through surface modifications involving ligands, antibodies, peptides, and other agents potentiates their effects. Recent years have witnessed the development of innovative structures with diverse compositions, expanding their applications in biomedicine. These applications encompass targeted imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, near-infrared II imaging, catalytic therapy, photothermal therapy, and cancer treatment. This review seeks to provide the nanomedicine community with a thorough and informative overview of the evolving landscape of complex metal nanoparticle research, with a specific emphasis on their roles in imaging, cancer therapy, infectious diseases, and biofilm treatment. A novel strategy for specific sensing and inactivation of Escherichia coli: Constructing a targeted sandwich-type biosensor with multiple SERS hotspots to enhance SERS detection sensitivity and near-infrared light-triggered photothermal sterilization performance

Human health is greatly threatened by bacterial infection, which raises the risk of serious illness and death in humans. For early screening and accurate treatment of bacterial infection, there is a strong desire to undertake ultrasensitive detection and effective killing of pathogenic bacteria. Herein, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor based on sandwich structure consisting of capture probes/bacteria/SERS tags was established for specific identification, capture and photothermal killing of Escherichia coli (E. coli). Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique was used to simulate the electromagnetic field distribution of capture probes, SERS tags and sandwich-type SERS substrate, and a possible SERS enhancement mechanism based on sandwich structure was presented and discussed. Sandwich-type SERS biosensor successfully achieved distinctive identification and magnetic beneficiation of E. coli. In addition, a single SERS substrate, including capture probes and SERS tags, could also achieve outstanding photothermal effects as a consequence of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Intriguingly, sandwich-type SERS biosensor demonstrated a higher photothermal conversion efficiency (50.03 %) than the single substrate, which might be attributed to the formation of target bacterial clusters. The superior biocompatibility and the low toxicity of the sandwich-type biosensor were confirmed. Our approach offers a fresh method for constructing sandwich-type biosensor with multiple SERS hotspots based on extremely effective hybrid plasmonic nanoparticles, and has a wide range of potential applications in the recognition and treatment of bacteria.

Role of Surface Curvature in Gold Nanostar Properties and Applications

Gold nanostars (AuNSs) are nanoparticles with intricate three-dimensional structures and shape-dependent optoelectronic properties. For example, AuNSs uniquely display three distinct surface curvatures, i.e. neutral, positive, and negative, which provide different environments to adsorbed ligands. Hence, these curvatures are used to introduce different surface chemistries in nanoparticles. This review summarizes and discusses the role of surface curvature in AuNS properties and its impact on biomedical and chemical applications, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, contrast agent performance, and catalysis. We examine the main synthetic approaches to generate AuNSs, control their morphology, and discuss their benefits and drawbacks. We also describe the optical characteristics of AuNSs and discuss how these depend on nanoparticle morphology. Finally, we analyze how AuNS surface curvature endows them with properties distinctly different from those of other nanoparticles, such as strong electromagnetic fields at the tips and increased hydrophilic environments at the indentations, together making AuNSs uniquely useful for biosensing, imaging, and local chemical manipulation.

Plasmon-driven photocatalytic reaction based on gold microsphere array

Plasma-driven photocatalytic reactions have great research value in the fields of energy utilization, environmental pollution treatment and micro-nano information encryption. In most cases, the substrates used to study photocatalytic reactions are dispersed and disordered, which leads to poor signal reproducibility and makes it difficult to realize applications in the field of quantitative analysis. In this paper, two different sizes of polystyrene (PS) microspheres were used as templates to prepare gold microsphere arrays (Au MA) with homogeneous particle size and regular arrangement. The p-Aminothiophenol (PATP) was selected as the probe molecule to systematically investigate the photocatalytic reaction on Au MA, and the dependence of the photocatalytic reaction on the particle size of the spheres was discussed. It was found that the smaller size of Au MA has higher catalytic activity. In addition, using conventional gold films as a comparison, no significant photocatalytic reaction was found under the same experimental conditions. The reason is the existence of strong surface plasma "hot spots" in the interstices of the particles on the surface of the Au MA, which promotes the reaction. The above experimental results are of theoretical and practical significance for the in-depth study of the photocatalytic effect of micro-nano array catalytic substrates.

In-Situ Monitoring the SERS Spectra of para-Aminothiophenol Adsorbed on Plasmon-Tunable Au@Ag Core–Shell Nanostars

Plasmon-induced photocatalysis on noble metal surfaces has attracted broad attention due to its application in sunlight energy conversion, while the selectivity of plasmonic platforms remains unclear. Herein, we present the controlled plasmon-mediated oxidation of para-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) by employing Au@Ag core–shell nanostars with tunable tip plasmons in visible–near-infrared range as reactors. In-situ Raman measurements indicate that Au@Ag core–shell nanostars essentially promote the conversion of p-ATP to 4,4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) due to hot carriers excited by localized surface plasmon resonance. Au@Ag nanostars with plasmon modes under resonant light excitation suggested higher catalytic efficiency, as evidenced by the larger intensity ratios between 1440 cm⁻¹ (N=N stretching of DMAB) and 1080 cm⁻¹ shifts (C–S stretching of p-ATP). Importantly, the time-dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra showed that the conversion efficiency of p-ATP was mainly dictated by the resonance condition between the tip plasmon mode of Au@Ag core–shell nanostars and the excitation light, as well as the choice of excitation wavelength. These results show that plasmon bands of metal nanostructures play an important role in the efficiency of plasmon-driven photocatalysis.

Photocatalytic Properties of Silver Nanospherical Arrays Driven by Surface Plasmons

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising technique to study the plasma-driven photocatalytic reactions. Hemispherical alumina nanoarrays with a regular hexagonal arrangement are firstly prepared; then, silver hemispherical nanoarrays are synthesized on the surface of the arrays by silver evaporation. When a laser with a specific wavelength (633 nm) is irradiated on the silver nanoarrays, a large number of regularly arranged local surface plasmon enhancement regions (called “hot spots”) would be generated on its surface. After that, a layer of evenly distributed p-aminothiophenol (PATP) probe molecules was placed on the substrate and the photocatalytic reaction of PATP was driven by the local surface plasmon to form four 4′-di-mercaptoazobenzene (DMAB). Then, under the same experimental conditions, the later product was reversely reacted to form PATP molecule by the action of plasma in the presence of in situ sodium borohydride. SERS can be used to monitor the whole process of the photocatalytic reaction of PATP probe molecules driven by the plasma on the surface of the silver nanoarrays. This research achieves the drawing and erasing of molecular graphics in the micro- and nano-scales, as well as information encryption, reading, and erasing that have strong application value.
