Simple SPR-based colorimetric sensor to differentiate Mg2+ and Ca2+ in aqueous solutions

Tuning surface morphology of AuNPs film via thiourea as a stable SERS platform for methylene blue

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been extensively utilized in various fields such as sensors, life sciences, and catalysis. In this study, AuNPs were synthesized using a reduction method and subsequently treated with thiourea in an ethanol-water environment to prepare AuNPs film using a centrifugal deposition method for first time, resulting in the aggregation of the initial small-sized AuNPs into larger microsphere-like structures. The addition of thiourea facilitated the interconnection between AuNPs, ultimately leading to the formation of large stable gold microspheres. The sheet resistance of the AuNP films transitioned from being non-conductive to exhibiting a sheet resistance of 42.6 Ω/sq following thiourea treatment. The transformation from a flat surface to tightly connected particles resembling microspheres was observed from SEM images. The thiourea treatment not only altered the morphological characteristic of the AuNPs films but also significantly increased the number of scattering sites on their surface, leading to a substantial enhancement in the Raman scattering effect for methylene blue. This structural configuration also improved the electronic conduction and stability of the treated AuNPs films. Consequently, these findings suggest that AuNPs have promising application prospects in surface-enhanced Raman scatting (SERS), as well as in flexible electronics, catalysis, adsorption, and energy fields.

Tailoring the Structure and Physico-Chemical Features of Cellulose-Based Hydrogels Using Multi-Epoxy Crosslinking Agents

Hydrogel features can be designed and optimized using different crosslinking agents to meet specific requirements. In this regard, the present work investigates the physico-chemical features of cellulose-based hydrogels, designed by using different epoxy crosslinkers from the same glycidyl family, namely epichlorohydrin (ECH), 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE), and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE). The effect of the crosslinker's structure (from simple to branched) and functionality (mono-, bi- and tri-epoxy groups) on the hydrogels' features was studied. The performances of the hydrogels were investigated through the gel fraction, as well as by ATR-FTIR, DVS, SEM, DSC, and TG analyses. Also, the swelling and rheological behaviors of the hydrogels were examined. The advantages and limitations of each approach were discussed and a strong correlation between the crosslinker structure and the hydrogel properties was established. The formation of new ether bonds was evidenced by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. It was emphasized that the pore size is directly influenced by the crosslinker type, namely, it decreases with the increasing number of epoxy groups from the crosslinker molecule, i.e., from 46 ± 11.1 µm (hydrogel CE, with ECH) to 12.3 ± 2.5 µm (hydrogel CB, with BDDE) and 6.7 ± 1.5 µm (hydrogel CT, with TMPTGE). The rheological behavior is consistent with the swelling data and hydrogel morphology, such as CE with the highest Qmax and the largest pore size being relatively more elastic than CB and CT. Instead, the denser matrices obtained by using crosslinkers with more complex structures have better thermal stability. The experimental results highlight the possibility of using a specific crosslinking agent, with a defined structure and functionality, in order to establish the main characteristics of hydrogels and, implicitly, to design them for a certain field of application.

A Cellulose-Based Dual-Crosslinked Framework with Sensitive Shape and Color Changes in Acid/Alkaline Vapors

Cellulose detectors, as green sensors, are some of the defensive mechanisms of plants which combat environmental stresses. However, extracted cellulose struggles to fulfil these functionalities due to its rigid physical/chemical properties. In this study, a novel cellulose dual-crosslinked framework (CDCF) is proposed. This comprises a denser temporary physical crosslinking bond (hydrogen bonding) and a looser covalent crosslinking bond (N,N-methylenebisacrylamide), which create deformable spaces between the two crosslinking sites. Abundant pH-sensitive carboxyl groups and ultralight, highly porous structures make CDCF response very sensitive in acid/alkaline vapor environments. Hence, a significant shrinkage of CDCF was observed following exposure to vapors. Moreover, a curcumin-incorporated CDCF exhibited dual shape and color changes when exposed to acid/alkaline vapors, demonstrating great potential for the multi-detection of acid/alkaline vapors.

UV-light-responsive Ag/TiO2/PVA nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of Cr, Ni, Zn, and Cu heavy metal ions

The rapid growth of industrialization has led to the uncontrolled pollution of the environment, and rapid action is needed. This study synthesized Ag/TiO2/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nano photocatalyst for promising light-derived photocatalytic removal of heavy metal ions. The design of experiment (DOE) was used to study the effect of important factors (pH, reaction time, and photocatalyst dosage) to maximize the final performance of the photocatalyst. In the optimized condition, the Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst removed more than 94% of Cr6+ in 180 min, and the efficiency was more than 70% for Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ metal ions. The adsorption of the heavy metal ions on the photocatalyst was described well with the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order linear kinetic model fitted with the experimental data. The nano-photocatalyst's stability was confirmed after maintaining its performance for five successive runs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for the heavy metal ions removal can be attributed to the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles (electron transfer and plasmonic fields mechanisms) and PVA, which delayed the recombination of electron-hole. The synthesized ternary Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst showed promising performance for the elimination of heavy metal ions and can be used for environmental remediation purposes.

In-situ preparation of norepinephrine-functionalized silver nanoparticles and application for colorimetric detection of tacrolimus in plasma samples

Tacrolimus (Tac) is a well-documented immunosuppressive agent for the prevention of graft-vs-host diseases in several types of organ transplants. The narrow therapeutic window and the individual-variable pharmacokinetics of Tac demonstrate the importance of regular therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) as an imperative concept for its oral medication regimens. A simple, one-step, selective, and sensitive colorimetric platform is fabricated for the determination of Tac by surface modification of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via norepinephrine (NE) molecules. The attachment of NE and Tac induces the aggregation of the AgNPs, which is observed by color distinction (yellow to brown) and a noteworthy shifting of the absorption peak in the visible region. The fabricated nanoprobe can detect Tac concentrations in plasma samples in two linear ranges from 2 ng/mL to 70 ng/mL and 70 ng/mL to 1000 ng/mL with R2 > 0.99. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated as low as 0.1 ng/mL. The developed method was applied for the determination of Tac in patient's plasma samples under Tac medication therapy.
