Fast synthesis of gold nanostar SERS substrates based on ion-track etched membrane by one-step redox reaction

Paper/GO/e-Au flexible SERS sensors for in situ detection of tricyclazole in orange juice and on cucumber skin at the sub-ppb level: machine learning-assisted data analysis

Despite being an excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active material, gold nanoparticles were difficult to be loaded onto the surface of filter paper to fabricate flexible SERS substrates. In this study, electrochemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (e-AuNPs) were deposited on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in solution by ultrasonication, resulting in the formation of a GO/Au hybrid material. Thanks to the support of GO, the hybrid material could adhere onto the surface of filter paper, which was immersed into a GO/Au solution for 24 h and dried naturally at room temperature. The paper-based materials were then employed as substrates for a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform to detect tricyclazole (TCZ), a widely used pesticide, resulting in better sensitivity compared to the use of paper/Au SERS sensors. With the most optimal GO content of 4%, paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could achieve a limit of detection of 1.32 × 10-10 M in standard solutions. Furthermore, the filter paper-based SERS sensors also exhibited significant advantages in sample collection in real samples. On one hand, the sensors were dipped into orange juice, allowing TCZ molecules in this real sample to be adsorbed onto their SERS active surface. On the other hand, they were pasted onto cucumber skin to collect the analytes. As a result, the paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could sense TCZ in orange juice and on cucumber skin at concentrations as low as 10-9 M (∼2 ppb). In addition, a machine learning model was designed and developed, allowing the sensing system to discriminate TCZ from nine other organic compounds and predict the presence of TCZ on cucumber skin at concentrations down to 10-9 M.

A review of recent advances in the use of complex metal nanostructures for biomedical applications from diagnosis to treatment

Complex metal nanostructures represent an exceptional category of materials characterized by distinct morphologies and physicochemical properties. Nanostructures with shape anisotropies, such as nanorods, nanostars, nanocages, and nanoprisms, are particularly appealing due to their tunable surface plasmon resonances, controllable surface chemistries, and effective targeting capabilities. These complex nanostructures can absorb light in the near-infrared, enabling noteworthy applications in nanomedicine, molecular imaging, and biology. The engineering of targeting abilities through surface modifications involving ligands, antibodies, peptides, and other agents potentiates their effects. Recent years have witnessed the development of innovative structures with diverse compositions, expanding their applications in biomedicine. These applications encompass targeted imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, near-infrared II imaging, catalytic therapy, photothermal therapy, and cancer treatment. This review seeks to provide the nanomedicine community with a thorough and informative overview of the evolving landscape of complex metal nanoparticle research, with a specific emphasis on their roles in imaging, cancer therapy, infectious diseases, and biofilm treatment. Planting gold nanoflower for harvesting reproducible SERS substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an ultrasensitive analytical method which has been applied in many fields, and the reproducibility of the substrate is important for reliable SERS analysis. In present work, an innovative method inspired by the flower planting process is put forward to acquire gold nanoflower (AuNF) SERS substrate. Three steps (digging holes, sowing the gold nanoseeds and seeds grow into gold nanoflowers) are included in the substrate fabrication process, and the influence of preparing conditions (like reacting time and Na3Au(SO3)2 concentration) on the substrate morphology and SERS performance are investigated. The acquired AuNF substrate not only exhibits good SERS performance but also possesses excellent reproducibility while being used to detect the rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecular. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of Raman signals among substrates acquired in distinct batches (substrate-to-substrate) is as low as 6.67 %. Since the AuNF substrate is prepared by the wet chemistry route based on seed-mediated growth and there are no expensive reagents or complicated process used, the new process to obtain AuNF substrate is cost-effective and easy to scale up.

Silver decahedral nanoparticles with uniform and adjustable sizes for surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based thiram residue detection

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely used as a sensitive molecular spectroscopy technology in food safety detection. Precise morphology control of plasmonic nanoparticles for high sensitivity and high uniformity SERS substrates remains challenging. Herein, silver decahedral nanoparticles (AgDeNPs) with uniform and adjustable sizes were synthesized by a photochemical seed-mediated method and utilized as SERS substrates for pesticide residue detection. The SERS sensitivity was demonstrated by using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as a typical model molecule, and the limit of detection (LOD) reached 1.0 × 10-13 M. The pesticide residue detection of thiram in aqueous solution and on fruit peels was successfully realized; the LODs were 1.0 × 10-11 M and 0.96 ng cm-2, respectively, and SERS repeatability was also proved. Overall, size-tunable AgDeNPs show attractive SERS performances and are expected to hold potential application in sensitive food and environmental safety detection.

High-Performance Au@Ag Nanorods Substrate for SERS Detection of Malachite Green in Aquatic Products

In order to improve the detection performance of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a low-cost Au@Ag nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) substrate with a good SERS enhancement effect was developed and applied to the detection of malachite green (MG) in aquaculture water and crayfish. By comparing the SERS signal enhancement effect of five kinds of Au@Ag NRs substrates with different silver layer thickness on 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) solution, it was found that the substrate prepared with 100 µL AgNO3 had the smallest aspect ratio (3.27) and the thickest Ag layer (4.1 nm). However, it showed a good signal enhancement effect, and achieved a detection of 4-MBA as low as 1 × 10-11 M, which was 8.7 times higher than that of the AuNRs substrate. In addition, the Au@Ag NRs substrate developed in this study was used for SRES detection of MG in crayfish; its detection limit was 1.58 × 10-9 M. The developed Au@Ag NRs sensor had the advantages of stable SERS signal, uniform size and low cost, which provided a new tool for SERS signal enhancement and highly sensitive SERS detection method development.

A surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor for the detection of benzo[a]pyrene in foods based on a gold nanostars@reduced graphene oxide substrate

In this study, a simple and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor based on gold nanostars@reduced graphene oxide (AuNS@rGO) was successfully developed for the detection of benzo[a]pyrene in foods. The detection strategy involved benzo[a]pyrene adsorption on reduced graphene oxide, followed SERS detection of adsorbed molecules. Owing to the large electric fields generated by the gold nanostars under laser irradiation, which greatly amplified the Raman signals of benzo[a]pyrene, very high sensitivity for the target analyte was achieved. Under optimized conditions, the SERS sensor exhibited a wide linear detection range for benzo[a]pyrene (from 0.1 μg L^-1 to 10000 μg L^-1), with a low limit of detection of 0.0028 μg L^-1. Chicken samples spiked with benzo[a]pyrene were assayed using the sensor, with recoveries ranging from 89.20% to 100.80%. The benzo[a]pyrene content in roasted mutton sample was quantified using the SERS sensor and a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method, with similar results being obtained.

Multifunctional Plasmon-Tunable Au Nanostars and Their Applications in Highly Efficient Photothermal Inactivation and Ultra-Sensitive SERS Detection

The development and application in different fields of multifunctional plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have always been research hotspots. Herein, multi-tip Au nanostars (NSs) with an anisotropic structure were fabricated for the photothermal therapy (PTT) of bacteria and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of pollutants. The size and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics of Au NSs were adjusted by varying Au seed additions. In addition, photothermal conversion performance of Au NSs with various Au seed additions was evaluated. Photothermal conversion efficiency of Au NSs with optimal Au seed additions (50 μL) was as high as 28.75% under 808 nm laser irradiation, and the heat generated was sufficient to kill Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Importantly, Au NSs also exhibited excellent SERS activity for the 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) probe molecule, and the local electromagnetic field distribution of Au NSs was explored through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. As verified by experiments, Au NSs' SERS substrate could achieve a highly sensitive detection of a low concentration of potentially toxic pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) and bilirubin (BR). This work demonstrates a promising multifunctional nanoplatform with great potential for efficient photothermal inactivation and ultra-sensitive SERS detection.
