Abstract
4-Aminophthalimide is a highly fluorescent signaling unit with excellent photophysical properties and wide application foregrounds. Based on this, a range of theoretical investigations are conducted on the fluorescent probe (E)-5-((2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) isoindoline-1, 3-dione (HID) with the core of 4-aminophthalimide using density functional theory (DFT) and time-containing density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in this paper. The optimized configurations, vertical excitation and emission energies, electronic characteristics and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviors of the probe HID are discussed in detail. Furthermore, to enhance the luminescent properties of HID, five novel compounds have been designed based on the structure of HID by introducing amino, methoxy and naphthalene groups (-NH2, -OMe and C10H8). Our work thoroughly explores how the property and position of substituents and conjugation affect photophysical characteristics and ESIPT processes. We find that the ESIPT dynamics can be modulated by the substitution and conjugation effects. Specifically, the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the ortho-position and the introduction of the naphthalene group promote the ESIPT behavior of HID1, whereas the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the meta-position exhibits the contrary impact. Therefore, we boldly infer that the introduction of electron-donating groups in the ortho-position and the introduction of the conjugated group make the ESIPT process more effortless to occur, whereas the introduction of substituents with opposing natures in the meta-position makes the ESIPT process more difficult to occur. In addition, the ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energies (λh and λe) of molecules are calculated to assess their potential as luminescent materials. Our work not only reveals the luminescence and ESIPT mechanism of the probe HID1, but also proposes to modulate the ESIPT process through the substitution and conjugation effects. In particular, the designed molecules have better photoelectric properties as a result of their red-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra, smaller energy gaps, larger transferred charges and greater charge transferred distances, which offers some valuable ideas for the experimental development of more efficient organic luminescent materials with ESIPT properties.

Abstract
A new Schiff base sensor (E)-N'-((8-hydroxy-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-9-yl)methylene)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)oxazole-4-carbohydrazide (TOQ) was synthesized and found to emit yellowish green fluorescence upon introduction of In3+. Furthermore, the resulting complex TOQ-In3+ was quenched selectively by Fe3+. The detection limits of TOQ for In3+ and Fe3+ were 1.75 × 10-10 M and 8.45 × 10-9 M, respectively. The complex stoichiometry of TOQ with target ions was determined to be 1:2 via Job's plot analysis, which further was verified by ESI-MS titration and theoretical calculations. Moreover, TOQ can be used for the determination of target ions in environmental water samples. A portable paper sensor of TOQ was successfully developed for detecting In3+ to assess its applicability.

Abstract
The construction of an efficient photothermal antibacterial platform is a promising strategy for the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. Herein, through the introduction of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer to promote the photothermal effect, N-(2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)-4-aminophenol (DOA)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) systems (DPVA) can reach 55 °C within 10 s under irradiation. They show superior antibacterial behavior against drug-resistant bacteria and a therapeutic effect on infected skin wounds with only 100 s of irradiation, much faster than those of reported photothermal materials (5-10 min). This work provides a convenient approach to fabricate broad-spectrum antibacterial wound dressings for treating bacteria-infected wounds, greatly contributing to the design and applications of photothermal antibacterial platforms.

Abstract
Metal cations are present in domestic and industrial wastewater and have adverse effects on human and aqueous life. The present study describes the development of the molecular probe 9-anthracen-9-ylmethylene)hydrazineylidene)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol (AMHMPQ) to detect Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions by using UV-visible, fluorescence, colorimetric and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy techniques. The interaction of Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ can be observed by the absorption maxima shift, turn-off, colour changes, and EEM shifts. In addition, fluorescence limits of detection 17.66 × 10-6 M, 6.44 × 10-9 M, 28.87 × 10-8 M, and 12.49 × 10-6 M in wide linear ranges, low limits of quantifications, high values of Stern-Volmer constant, Job's plot and Benesi-Hildebrand plot justify the 1:1 association affinity with association constants of 1.46 × 104 M-1, 1.86 × 107 M-1, 2.69 × 105 M-1, 2.13 × 104 M-1 for AMHMPQ-metal ions (Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions), respectively. Paper- and mask-based kits are developed to explore the utility of the designed chemosensor. Additionally, AMHMPQ acts as a reusable sensor for two, seven, two, and zero cycles for Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions, respectively, when checked with EDTA.

Tuning ESIPT-coupled luminescence by expanding π-conjugation of a proton acceptor moiety in ESIPT-capable zinc(II) complexes with 1-hydroxy-1 H-imidazole-based ligands. Abstract
The emission of ESIPT-fluorophores is known to be sensitive to various external and internal stimuli and can be fine-tuned through substitution in the proton-donating and proton-accepting groups. The incorporation of metal ions in the molecules of ESIPT fluorophores without their deprotonation is an emerging area of research in coordination chemistry which provides chemists with a new factor affecting the ESIPT reaction and ESIPT-coupled luminescence. In this paper we present 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-2-(quinolin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HLq) as a new ESIPT-capable ligand. Due to the spatial separation of metal binding and ESIPT sites this ligand can coordinate metal ions without being deprotonated. The reactions of ZnHal2 with HLq afford ESIPT-capable [Zn(HLq)Hal2] (Hal = Cl, Br, I) complexes. In the solid state HLq and [Zn(HLq)Hal2] luminesce in the orange region (λmax = 600-650 nm). The coordination of HLq by Zn2+ ions leads to the increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect. The ESIPT process is barrierless in the S1 state, leading to the only possible fluorescence channel in the tautomeric form (T), S1T → S0T. The emission of [Zn(HLq)Hal2] in the solid state is blue-shifted as compared with HLq due to the stabilization of the ground state and destabilization of the excited state. In CH2Cl2 solutions, the compounds demonstrate dual emission in the UV (λmax = 358 nm) and green (λmax = 530 nm) regions. This dual emission is associated with two radiative deactivation channels in the normal (N) and tautomeric (T) forms, S1N → S0N and S1T → S0T, originating from two minima on the excited state potential energy surfaces. High energy barriers for the GSIPT process allow the trapping of molecules in the minimum of the tautomeric form, S0T, resulting in the possibility of the S0T → S1T photoexcitation and extraordinarily small Stokes shifts in the solid state. Finally, the π-system of quinolin-2-yl group facilitates the delocalization of the positive charge in the proton-accepting part of the molecule and promotes the ESIPT reaction.
