A water-soluble naphthalimide fluorescent probe for Cr2O72- and Fe3+ based on inner filter effect

Ln-MOF-Based Hydrogel Films with Tunable Luminescence and Afterglow Behavior for Visual Detection of Ofloxacin and Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Highly selective and sensitive quantitative detection of ofloxacin (OFX) at ultralow concentrations in aqueous media and development of new afterglow materials remains a challenge. Herein, a new 2D water-stable lanthanide metal-organic framework (NIIC-2-Tb) is proposed, which exhibits high selectivity towards OFX through the luminescence quenching with the lowest detection limit (1.1 × 10-9 M) reported to date and a fast response within 6 s. In addition, the luminescent detection of OFX by NIIC-2-Tb is not affected by typical components of blood plasma and urine. The excellent sensing effect of NIIC-2-Tb is further utilized to prepare a composite functional sensing carrageenan hydrogel material for the rapid detection of OFX in meat in real time and the first discovery of impressive afterglow in MOF-based hydrogels. This study not only presents novel Ln-MOF materials and Ln-MOF-based hydrogel films for luminescent sensing of OFX, but also demonstrates color-tunable luminescent films with afterglow, which expands the application of composite luminescent materials for detection and anti-counterfeiting.

A novel turn-on fluorescent probe for detection of pH in extremely acidic environment and its application

A water-soluble turn-on fluorescent probe PNAP for pH has been designed and synthesized. PNAP was consist of pyrene as fluorophore and morpholine as receptor. Owing to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effect, the fluorescence of PNAP was quenched, while PNAP exhibited a remarkable "turn-on" fluorescence with the increase of acidity. Notably for its pKa of 2.15, PNAP was one of the pH fluorescent probes used in extremely acidic environments. Furthermore, PNAP also displayed good repeatability, strong anti-ion interference ability, high sensitivity and selectivity toward pH. In addition, PNAP has been successfully applied to the test strips and monitor the pH of environment water samples and realistic samples, showing its good promising prospect.

Recent Progress on Fluorescent Probes in Heavy Metal Determinations for Food Safety: A Review

One of the main challenges faced in food safety is the accumulation of toxic heavy metals from environmental sources, which can sequentially endanger human health when they are consumed. It is invaluable to establish a practical assay for the determination of heavy metals for food safety. Among the current detection methods, technology based on fluorescent probes, with the advantages of sensitivity, convenience, accuracy, cost, and reliability, has recently shown pluralistic applications in the food industry, which is significant to ensure food safety. Hence, this review systematically presents the recent progress on novel fluorescent probes in determining heavy metals for food safety over the past five years, according to fluorophores and newly emerging sensing cores, which could contribute to broadening the prospects of fluorescent materials and establishing more practical assays for heavy metal determinations.

Fluorescent Probes as a Tool in Diagnostic and Drug Delivery Systems

Over the last few years, the development of fluorescent probes has received considerable attention. Fluorescence signaling allows noninvasive and harmless real-time imaging with great spectral resolution in living objects, which is extremely useful for modern biomedical applications. This review presents the basic photophysical principles and strategies for the rational design of fluorescent probes as visualization agents in medical diagnosis and drug delivery systems. Common photophysical phenomena, such as Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT), Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer (TICT), Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET), Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT), Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), and Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), are described as platforms for fluorescence sensing and imaging in vivo and in vitro. The presented examples are focused on the visualization of pH, biologically important cations and anions, reactive oxygen species (ROS), viscosity, biomolecules, and enzymes that find application for diagnostic purposes. The general strategies regarding fluorescence probes as molecular logic devices and fluorescence–drug conjugates for theranostic and drug delivery systems are discussed. This work could be of help for researchers working in the field of fluorescence sensing compounds, molecular logic gates, and drug delivery.
