Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a toxic air pollutant, can have harmful effects on human health when inhaled or when it forms bisulfite in the body. In the present work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe, 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole-3-ethyl-1,1,2-trimethyl-1H-benzo[e]indolium (HBT-EMBI), was selected to study the mechanism of SO2 derivatives detection. This study provides insights into the attributions of ratiometric fluorescence through hydrogen bond dynamics, electronic excitation properties, radiation rates, and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) level. The results confirm that the large Stokes shifts and broad emission spectra of the HBT-EMBI probe are associated with its intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics and hydrogen bonding-driven ESIPT processes, respectively. After the addition reaction between the probe and HSO3-/SO32-, the conformational populations of HBT-EMBI-HSO3- transfer abnormally from enol configurations to more stable keto configurations, which leads to a distinguished change in the visible color and the ratiometric fluorescence signal, and is not due to the blockage of the ICT process of HBT-EMBI-HSO3-, as previously reported. This work provides a new perspective on the mechanism of detection of SO2 derivatives by ESIPT fluorescent probes.

Abstract
In this report, we propose a new insight into the interaction between the solvent-polarity-dependent conformational equilibrium and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior of Pz3HC system in four different polar solvents (polarity order: ACN > THF > TOL > CYC). Using quantum chemistry method, we first announce a coexistence mechanism between Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in the ground state in four solvents based on the Boltzmann distribution. In particular, Pz3HC-1 is the principal configuration in non-polar solvent, but Pz3HC-3 is the principal configuration in polar solvent. In addition, the simulated fluorescence spectra interprets the negative solvatochromism effect of Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in four solvents. The evidence from intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) parameters and electronic perspective collectively confirms the light-induced IHB enhancement and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties in Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3, which raises the likelihood of the ESIPT process. Combining the calculation of potential energy curve (PEC) and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC), we demonstrate that the ESIPT ease of Pz3HC-1 in different polar solvents obeys the order of CYC > TOL > THF > ACN, while the order of ESIPT ease in Pz3HC-3 is opposite. Notably, the ESIPT process of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent is accompanied by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. In addition, we also reveal that the enol* and keto* fluorescence peaks of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent are quenched by ISC and TICT process, respectively. Our work not only provides a satisfactory explanation of the novel dynamics mechanism for Pz3HC system, but also brings light to the design and application of new sensing molecules in the future.

Abstract
The study of salicylideneaniline (SA) and its derivatives is critical due to their special photophysical properties and environmental sensitivity. In this work, the density time-dependent functional theory (TDDFT) and complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) methods were carried out to calculate the substituent effect on excited-state properties and dynamics of SA derivatives. We found the para-substitution triggers the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction, exhibiting the dual-fluorescent phenomena. However, the meta- and ortho-substitutions impel the non-radiative transition process along the minimum energy conical intersection (MECI), forming the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state to prevent ESIPT. This investigation of substituent effects on the photochemical processes and photophysical properties will provide the benchmarks for the design of fluorescent materials.

Abstract
This work reports a theoretical investigation of the solvent polarity as well as the halogenation of benzimidazole derivatives during excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). It details how the environment and halogen substitution may contribute to the efficiency of ESIPT upon keto-enol tautomerism and exploits this effect to design fluorescence sensing. For this purpose, we first examine the conformational equilibrium of benzimidazole derivatives containing different halogen atoms, which results in intramolecular proton transfer, using density-functional theory (DFT) combined with the polarizable continuum model (PCM). Then we evaluate the fluorescence of the benzimidazole derivatives in different dielectric constants within time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approaches. Our results quantitatively allow the determination of large Stokes shifts in nonpolar solvents around 100 nm. These theoretical results are in agreement with experimental solvatochromism studies of benzimidazoles. The effect of halogenation, with fluorine, chlorine, and bromine, is less important than solvent polarization when ESIPT takes place. Thus, halogenation can be properly chosen depending on the interest of the synthesis of benzimidazole-based turn-on fluorescence in appropriate solvents.

Abstract
In this work, by capitalizing on the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods, it has been systematically studied that the excited state double intramolecular proton transfer (ESDPT) process and the photophysical properties of 1,8-dihydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde (DHNA) are affected by the distinct external electric fields (EEFs). The obtained intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) parameters containing bond lengths and angles, as well as infrared (IR) vibrational spectra demonstrate that IHB strength changes in the distinct EEFs. Moreover, not only do the potential energy surfaces (PESs) indicate that the ESDPT process of DHNA is stepwise, but also increasing the positive EEF results in a decrease in the energy barrier accordingly, while vice versa. The absorption and fluorescence spectra also undergo a corresponding red or blue shift in the EEF; for instance, when the EEF changes from +10 × 10-4 a.u. to +20 × 10-4 a.u., the fluorescence peak undergoes a blue shift from 602 nm to 513 nm in the keto2 form. In a nutshell, the ESDPT process of DHNA can be influenced by the EEF, which will serve as a reference in regulating and controlling proton transfer that causes luminescence.

Abstract
In view of the application prospects in biomedicine of (E)-1-(4-(diethyla-mino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4,4-dimethylthiosemicarbazide (DAHTS), the behavior of excited-state dynamics and photophysical properties were studied using the density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory method. A series of studies indicated that the intramolecular hydrogen-bond (IHB) intensity of DAHTS was enhanced after photoexcitation. This was conducive to promoting the excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) process. Combining the analysis of the IHB and hole-electron, it revealed that the molecule underwent both the ESIPT process and the twisted charge-transfer (TICT) process. Relying on exploration of the potential energy surface, it was proposed that the different competitive mechanisms between the ESIPT and TICT processes were regulated by solvent polarity. In acetonitrile (ACN) solvent, the ESIPT process occurred first, and the TICT process occurred later. In contrast, in the CYH solvent, the molecule first underwent the TICT process and then the ESIPT process. Furthermore, we raised the possibility that the TICT behavior was the cause of weak fluorescence emission for the DAHTS in CYH and ACN solvents. By the dimer correlation analysis, the corresponding components of triple fluorescence emission were clearly assigned, corresponding to the monomer, dimer, and ESIPT isomer in turn. Our work precisely elucidated the photophysical mechanism of DAHTS and the attribution of the triple fluorescence emission components, which provided valuable guidance for the development and regulation of bioactive fluorescence probes with multiband and multicolor emission characteristics.

Abstract
The basic systems in this study are HL (1; 1:2 condensation product of 2,6-diformyl-4-ethylphenol and o-anisidine) and its ZnII and CdII complexes of composition [ZnII(LH)Cl2]·CH3OH (2) and [CdII(LH)Cl2] (3), all of which are synthesized and characterized by CHN elemental analyses, single crystal X-ray crystallography, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum. It has been established from the following experimental and theoretical studies that 1 is a fluorescent turn on sensor of ZnII ion and it exhibits all of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE): (i) Detailed absorption and emission (steady state / time resolved) studies in various single solvents, in solvent mixtures, with pH variation, with various single metal ions, with mixtures of metal ions, on varying temperature and on varying viscosity; (ii) dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in solvent mixtures; (iii) density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations in ground and excites states of 1-3. It is shown that 1 can be efficaciously applied in inkless writing with the "write - erase - write" facility. The mechanisms/reasons of the observed properties have been addressed. The difference in fluorescence of ZnII and CdII complexes, unusual case of crystal structures of probe and complexes with ZnII and CdII, unusual features in the structures of 2 and 3 as well as a structure-property correlation have been discussed.

Abstract
The high-density particle distribution in capillary was a crucial factor for enhancing SERS properties and a difficult point in the preparation process. The direct high-temperature method was used to fuse the particles and form a uniform and dense particle distribution on the capillary's inner wall, providing a foundation for enhancing Raman signals. The prepared capillary SERS substrate strongly enhances the rhodamine 6G (R6G) signal, and the RSD values of several characteristic peaks of R6G are about 10 %, demonstrating high sensitivity, uniformity, and stability. Using capillary SERS substrate for detecting goat serum. Embedding precious metal particles into capillary SERS substrate can effectively encapsulate the tested liquid and avoid contamination, which improves the disadvantage of traditional substrates exposing the liquid to air. The prepared capillary SERS substrate could be used for field and biomedical sensitivity detection, providing a theoretical and experimental basis for developing the capillary SERS substrate.

Abstract
Triangle-shaped silver nanoprisms (AgNPMs) were prepared by a photo-induced method through a seed-mediated growth process and were successfully employed as an ultra-sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for the detection of the chemotherapeutic N-acetyl procainamide (NAPA) compound. The transformation of the morphology of the nanoprisms substrate could be noted with a remarkable change in color, possessing an average size of 95 nm. The shape-modified AgNPMs exhibited interesting optical characteristics owing to the truncated dual edges, which led to a pronounced longitudinal localized surface plasmonic resonance (LLSPR) behavior. The nanoprisms-based SERS substrate demonstrated an outstanding sensitivity for NAPA in aqueous solutions with the lowest ever reported detection limit of 0.5 × 10-13 M corresponding to excellent recovery and stability. A steady linear response with a broad dynamic range (10-4-10-12 M) and an R2 of 0.945 was also achieved. The results proved that the NPMs demonstrated excellent efficiency, reproducibility (97%), and stability (30 days) with a superior Raman signal enhancement reaching an ultralow detection limit of 0.5 × 10-13 M compared to the nanosphere particles which could show an LOD of 0.5 × 10-9 M.

Abstract
CONTEXT Oligothiophenes have long been used as model compounds to understand the chemistry of polythiophenes. Herein, we have some quantum chemical calculations and intra- and inter-molecular interaction calculations of a series of oligothiophenes such as terthiophene, quintetthiophene, sevensthiophene, terthiophene-terthiophene, terthiophene-water, terthiophene-methanol, and terthiophene-chloroform performed by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), density functional theory (DFT), and Multiwfn: a multifunctional wavefunction analyzer. The UV-vis spectra, HOMO-LUMO energies, NBO analysis, MEP, molecular structures, and electronic properties were computed using DFT/TD-DFT at the level of B3LYP/6-31+ G (d,p) and described. The nature of molecular interactions between terthiophene and solvents like water, methanol, and chloroform were also investigated using non-covalent interaction index (NCI), reduced density gradient (RDG), localized orbital locator (LOL), and electron localization function (ELF) topological analyses. Besides, Fukui functions and energy of population density-of-states were computed using the same method. The calculation results show that there are some changes in the terthiophene with the addition of solvent to the medium. METHODS DFT calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09 software and GaussView 5.0 visulation program. Multiwfn software is used to calculate the reduced density gradient (RDG) scatterplots, non-covalent interactions (NCI), ELF, LOL, Fukui analysis, and energy of population density-of-states of oligothiophenes.

Abstract
Polydopamine (PDA) is a multifunctional biomimetic material that is friendly to biological organisms and the environment, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors have the potential to be reused. Inspired by these two factors, this review summarizes examples of PDA-modified materials at the micron or nanoscale to provide suggestions for designing intelligent and sustainable SERS biosensors that can quickly and accurately monitor disease progression. Undoubtedly, PDA is a kind of double-sided adhesive, introducing various desired metals, Raman signal molecules, recognition components, and diverse sensing platforms to enhance the sensitivity, specificity, repeatability, and practicality of SERS sensors. Particularly, core-shell and chain-like structures could be constructed by PDA facilely, and then combined with microfluidic chips, microarrays, and lateral flow assays to provide excellent references. In addition, PDA membranes with special patterns, and hydrophobic and strong mechanical properties can be used as independent platforms to carry SERS substances. As an organic semiconductor material capable of facilitating charge transfer, PDA may possess the potential for chemical enhancement in SERS. In-depth research on the properties of PDA will be helpful for the development of multi-mode sensing and the integration of diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Inspired by the regulatory luminescence properties of HBT derivatives, in this work, we mainly conduct a detailed theoretical exploration on the photoinduced excitation behavior of a novel di-proton-transfer type HBT derivative 1-bis(benzothiazolyl)naphthalene-diol (1-BBTND). The intramolecular double hydrogen bonding interaction and the excited state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESDPT) behavior of 1-BBTND fluorophore are investigated in combination with different polar solvent environments. From the structural changes and charge recombination induced by photoexcitation, we can conclude that strong polar solvent environment promotes the excited state dynamical reaction for 1-BBTND compound. By constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) in S0 and S1 states, we clarify that 1-BBTND fluorophore should undergo a stepwise ESDPT reaction after photoexcitation. Combined with the size of potential energy barriers along with reaction paths in different solvents, we finally propose a new solvent-polarity-dependent stepwise ESDPT for 1-BBTND fluorophore.
