Reducing Interfacial Losses in Solution-Processed Integrated Perovskite-Organic Solar Cells

Low bandgap organic semiconductors have been widely employed to broaden the light response range to utilize much more photons in the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the serious charge recombination at the heterointerface contact between perovskite and organic semiconductors usually leads to large energy loss and limits the device performance. In this work, a titanium chelate, bis(2,4-pentanedionato) titanium(IV) oxide (C10H14O5Ti), was directly used as an interlayer between the perovskite layer and organic bulk heterojunction layer for the first time. Impressively, it was found that C10H14O5Ti can not only increase the surface potential of perovskite films but also show a positive passivation effect toward the perovskite film surface. Drawing from the above function, a smoother perovskite active layer with a higher work function was realized upon the use of C10H14O5Ti. As a result, the C10H14O5Ti-modified integrated devices show lower interfacial loss and obtain the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 20.91% with a high voltage of 1.15 V. The research offers a promising strategy to minimize the interfacial loss for the preparation of high-performance perovskite solar cells.

A Dual-Functional Conjugated Polymer as an Efficient Hole-Transporting Layer for High-Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Conductive polyelectrolytes such as P3CT-Na have been widely used as efficient hole-transporting layers (HTLs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their high hole mobility. However, the acid-base neutralization reaction is indispensable for preparing such polyelectrolytes and the varied content of cations usually leads to poor reproducibility of the device performance in PSCs. In this work, a commercially available polymer poly[3-(4-carboxybutyl)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3CT) was directly applied as an HTL in PSCs for the first time. Encouragingly, it was found that due to the dual functionality of carboxyl groups on side chains, a thin layer of P3CT can not only strongly anchor on ITO electrode and optimize its work function but also show an effective passivation effect toward perovskite active layer. Benefiting from such dual functionality, a uniform perovskite film with better quality was obtained on P3CT. As a result, the P3CT-based PSCs show much lower nonradiative recombination and achieve a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.33% with a high fill factor (FF) of 83.6%. Impressively, as the device area is increased to 0.80 cm², a PCE of 19.65% can still be obtained for the PSCs based on P3CT HTL. Our work provides important strategy for developing HTLs for high-performance PSCs.

Conformation-Tuning Effect of Asymmetric Small Molecule Acceptors on Molecular Packing, Interaction, and Photovoltaic Performance

Understanding the conformation effect on molecular packing, miscibility, and photovoltaic performance is important to open a new avenue for small-molecule acceptor (SMA) design. Herein, two novel acceptor-(donor-acceptor1-donor)-acceptor (A-DA1D-A)-type asymmetric SMAs are developed, namely C-shaped BDTP-4F and S-shaped BTDTP-4F. The BDTP-4F-based polymer solar cells (PSCs) with PM6 as donor, yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.24%, significantly higher than that of the BTDTP-4F-based device (13.12%). The better PCE for BDTP-4F-based device is mainly attributed to more balanced charge transport, weaker bimolecular recombination, and more favorable morphology. Additionally, two traditional A-D-A-type SMAs (IDTP-4F and IDTTP-4F) are also synthesized to investigate the conformation effect on morphology and device performance. Different from the device result above, here, IDTP-4F with S-shape conformation outperforms than IDTTP-4F with C-shape conformation. Importantly, it is found that for these two different types of SMA, the better performing binary blend has similar morphological characteristics. Specifically, both PM6:BDTP-4F and PM6:IDTP-4F blend exhibit perfect nanofibril network structure with proper domain size, obvious face-on orientation and enhance donor-acceptor interactions, thereby better device performance. This work indicates tuning molecular conformation plays pivotal role in morphology and device effciciency, shining a light on the molecular design of the SMAs.

Alloy-like ternary polymer solar cells with over 17.2% efficiency

Ternary strategy has been considered as an efficient method to achieve high performance polymer solar cells (PSCs). A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.22% is achieved in the optimized ternary PSCs with 10 wt% MF1 in acceptors. The over 8% PCE improvement by employing ternary strategy is attributed to the simultaneously increased J_SC of 25.68 mA cm^-2, V_OC of 0.853 V and FF of 78.61% compared with Y6 based binary PSCs. The good compatibility of MF1 and Y6 can be confirmed from Raman mapping, contact angle, cyclic voltammetry and morphology, which is the prerequisite to form alloy-like state. Electron mobility in ternary active layers strongly depends on MF1 content in acceptors due to the different lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of Y6 and MF1, which can well explain the wave-like varied FF of ternary PSCs. The third-party certified PCE of 16.8% should be one of the highest values for single bulk heterojunction PSCs. This work provides sufficient references for selecting materials to achieve efficient ternary PSCs.

Effects of Halogenation in B ← N Embedded Polymer Acceptors on Performance of All-Polymer Solar Cells

Halogenation, for example, fluorination and chlorination, is an effective strategy to regulate the performance of organic photovoltaic materials. Although fluorination has been widely applied to polymer acceptors, systematic studies on the comparison of nonhalogenated, fluorinated, and chlorinated polymer acceptors have been a blank to now. Herein, a B ← N embedded electron-deficient unit (A), namely, BNIDT was copolymerized with three electron-rich units (D), that is, benzodithiophene (BDT), fluorinated BDT, and chlorinated BDT to obtain three D-A polymers of BN-BDT, BN-BDT-F, and BN-BDT-Cl, respectively. The three polymers exhibit similar LUMOs of ca. -3.77 eV, whereas the HOMOs are remarkably decreased from BN-BDT (-5.46 eV) to BN-BDT-F (-5.71 eV) and further slightly lowered to BN-BDT-Cl (-5.74 eV). All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) were fabricated using PBDB-T as the donor and the three B ← N-based polymers as the acceptors. The efficiencies of all-PSCs were significantly promoted from nonhalogenated BN-BDT (1.60%) to fluorinated BN-BDT-F (3.71%) and further elevated to chlorinated BN-BDT-Cl (4.23%). Device characterizations revealed that halogenation on the polymer acceptors leads to enhanced hole-transfer driving forces and better donor/acceptor miscibility, for example, smaller domain sizes and root-mean-square roughness (rms) values, which further gives rise to higher and more balanced hole/electron mobilities and efficient physical processes, for example, efficient exciton dissociation and collection and weaker recombination losses in halogenated devices. This work demonstrates that the photovoltaic performance of nonhalogenated polymer acceptors can be remarkably boosted by fluorination and further enhanced by chlorination. This is the first systematic study on the halogenated polymer acceptors by comprehensively comparing nonhalogenated, fluorinated, and chlorinated ones.
