Engineering the electronic and strained interface for high activity of PdMcore@Ptmonolayer electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance of the FePt/PPy-C Composite toward Methanol Oxidation

A novel FePt/PPy-C composite nanomaterial has been designed and investigated as a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) electrocatalyst. The FePt nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 3 nm have been prepared by the co-reduction method and then loaded onto the PPy-C composite support. The electrocatalytic performance is affected by the composition of the FePt nanoparticles. The experimental results indicated that the Fe1.5Pt1/PPy-C catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for MOR, with mass activity and specific activity of 1.76 A mgPt-1 and 2.71 mA cm-2, respectively, which are 5.18 and 4.60 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) has been employed to simulate the electrical structures of catalyst supports, and the mechanism of the methanol oxidation process has been further analyzed. The heterojunctions of the PPy-C interface could accelerate the electron migration from the electrocatalytic center to the electrodes. The possibility of methanol oxidation has been improved effectively, which can be confirmed by the d-band center and CO adsorption energy on FePt nanoparticles in the DFT calculation results.

Electronic Structure Effect of PtCo Alloy with Adjustable Compositions for Efficient Methanol Electrooxidation

Various efficient strategies have been developed to overcome the anodic electrocatalyst issue of methanol-based fuel cells owing to their complicated methanol electrooxidation mechanism. In this work, PtCo nanoparticles with adjustable compositions supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Pt1Cox/MWCNTs) through the adsorbing-coating-annealing-etching route were synthesized. Compared with the Pt/C catalyst, Pt1Co3/MWCNTs exhibit better electrocatalytic MOR activity in both activity and durability. Notably, the electrochemical mass and specific activity of the as-prepared catalyst are 1.04 mA μg-1Pt and 2.18 mA cm-2, respectively, which are higher than those of the Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the as-prepared sample revealed lower onset potential during the CO stripping test. Furthermore, the Pt1Co3/MWCNTs possess a lower current density decrease rate in chronoamperometry and cyclic durability tests. The enhancement of activity and stability of Pt1Co3/MWCNTs could be ascribed to their ordered morphological structure, the electronic interaction between MWCNTs and PtCo nanoparticles, and the suitable electronic structure effect between Pt/Co ratios. The concept of the catalyst design in this study offers a different guideline for constructing the novel methanol electrooxidation catalyst, which will accelerate the widespread fuel cell practical application.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals for Fuel-Cells-Based Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis underpins the renewable electrochemical conversions for sustainability, which further replies on metallic nanocrystals as vital electrocatalysts. Intermetallic nanocrystals have been known to show distinct properties compared to their disordered counterparts, and been long explored for functional improvements. Tremendous progresses have been made in the past few years, with notable trend of more precise engineering down to an atomic level and the investigation transferring into more practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which motivates this timely review. After addressing the basic thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals, we discuss classic and latest synthetic strategies that enable not only the formation of intermetallic phase but also the rational control of other catalysis-determinant structural parameters, such as size and morphology. We also demonstrate the emerging intermetallic nanomaterials for potentially further advancement in energy electrocatalysis. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art characterizations and representative intermetallic electrocatalysts with emphasis on oxygen reduction reaction evaluated in a MEA setup. We summarize this review by laying out existing challenges and offering perspective on future research directions toward practicing intermetallic electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

Catalyst Development for High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) Applications

A constant increase in global emission standard is causing fuel cell (FC) technology to gain importance. Over the last two decades, a great deal of research has been focused on developing more active catalysts to boost the performance of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), as well as their durability. Due to material degradation at high-temperature conditions, catalyst design becomes challenging. Two main approaches are suggested: (i) alloying platinum (Pt) with low-cost transition metals to reduce Pt usage, and (ii) developing novel catalyst support that anchor metal particles more efficiently while inhibiting corrosion phenomena. In this comprehensive review, the most recent platinum group metal (PGM) and platinum group metal free (PGM-free) catalyst development is detailed, as well as the development of alternative carbon (C) supports for HT-PEMFCs.

Conductivity-enhanced porous N/P co-doped metal-free carbon significantly enhances oxygen reduction kinetics for aqueous/flexible zinc-air batteries

Heteroatom-doped metal-free carbon catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions have gained significant attention because of their unusual activity and economic cost. Here, a novel N/P co-doped porous carbon catalyst (NPPC) with a high surface area for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is constructed by a facile high-temperature calcination method employing ZIF-8 as the precursor and red phosphorus as the phosphorus source. In particular, ZIF-8 is firstly calcined to obtain N-doped carbon (NC) followed by further calcination with red phosphorus to obtain NPPC. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) analysis shows that the ultra-low amount of P doping could significantly decrease the work function from 4.32 to 3.86 eV. The resultant catalyst exhibits a promising electrocatalytic activity with a half-wave potential (E_1/2) of 0.87 V and a limiting current density (J_L) of 5.15 mA cm^-2. Besides, it also shows improved catalytic efficiency and excellent durability with a negligible decay of J_L after 2000 CV cycles. Moreover, aqueous and solid-state flexible zinc-air batteries (ZAB) using the catalyst show a promising application potential. This work provides new insight into developing P/N-doped metal-free carbon ORR catalysts.

Mesoporous Surface-Sulfurized Fe-Co3O4 Nanosheets Integrated with N/S Co-Doped Graphene as a Robust Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution and Reduction Reactions

Playing a significant role in electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems, heteroatom-doped transition metal oxides are key materials for oxygen-involving reactions. Herein, mesoporous surface-sulfurized Fe-Co₃O₄ nanosheets integrated with N/S co-doped graphene (Fe-Co₃O₄-S/NSG) were designed as composite bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Compared with the Co₃O₄-S/NSG catalyst, it exhibited superior activity in the alkaline electrolytes by delivering an OER overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and an ORR half-wave potential of 0.77 V vs. RHE. Additionally, Fe-Co₃O₄-S/NSG kept stable at 4.2 mA cm^-2 for 12 h without significant attenuation to render robust durability. This work not only demonstrates the satisfactory effect of the transition-metal cationic modification represented by iron doping on the electrocatalytic performance of Co₃O₄, but it also provides a new insight on the design of OER/ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient energy conversion.

Ultra-Small Nanoparticles of Pd-Pt-Ni Alloy Octahedra with High Lattice Strain for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The design and synthesis of ultra-small-sized Pt-based catalyst with specific effects for enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an effective way to improve the utilization of Pt. Herein, Pt-Pd-Ni octahedra nanoparticles characterized by the ultra-small size of 4.71 nm were synthesized by a Pd seed-inducing-growth route. Initially, Pd nanocubes were synthesized under solvothermal conditions; subsequently, Pt-Ni was deposited in the Pd seed solution. The Pd seeds were oxidized into Pd2+ and combined with Pt2+ and Ni2+ in the solution and finally formed the ternary alloy small-sized octahedra. In the synthesis process of the ultra-small Pt-Pd-Ni octahedra, Pd nanocube seed played an important role. In addition, the size of the Pt-Pd-Ni octahedra could be regulated by adjusting the concentration rate of Pt-Ni. The ultra-small Pt-Pd-Ni octahedra formation by depositing Pt-Ni with a feeding ratio of 2:1 showed good ORR activity, and the high half-wave potential was 0.933 V. In addition, the Pt-Pd-Ni octahedra showed an enhanced mass activity of 0.93 A mg−1 Pt+Pd in ORR, which was 5.81 times higher than commercial Pt/C. The theoretical calculation shows that compared to Pt/C, the small-sized ternary alloy octahedra had an obvious contraction strain effect (contraction rate: 3.49%). The alloying effect affected the d-band center of the Pt negative shift. In the four-electron reaction, Pt-Pd-Ni ultra-small octahedra exhibited the lowest overpotential, resulting in the adsorption performance to become optimized. Therefore, the Pd seed-inducing-growth route provides a new idea for exploring the synthesis of small-sized nanoparticle catalysts.

Ultrathin Pd3 Pt1 Rh0.1 Nanorings with Strong C-C Bond Breaking Ability for the Ethanol Oxidation Reaction

Ethanol as a fuel for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) has the advantages of being highly energetic, environmentally friendly, and low-cost, while the slow anodic ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), intermediate poisoning effect, and incomplete oxidation of ethanol became obstacles to the development of DEFCs. Herein, a 2D ternary cyclic Pd₃ Pt₁ Rh_0.1 nanorings (NRs) catalyst with efficient EOR performance is prepared via a facile one-pot solvothermal approach, and systematic studies are carried out to reveal the mechanisms of the enhanced performance and C-C bond selectivity. In particular, the optimized catalyst exhibits impressive mass activity, stability, toxicity resistance, and C-C bond cleavage ability. It's proposed that the considerable performance is attributed to the unique hollow structure, providing abundant active sites. The high toxicity resistance is not only attributed to the electronic modulation of the catalyst material by Rh atoms, but also depends on the excellent water activation properties of Rh, which contribute to the removal of intermediates, such as CO. In addition, the density functional theory calculations showed that the introduction of Rh significantly enhances the C-C bond cleavage ability of the catalyst, further improving the EOR activity.

Movable type printing method to synthesize high-entropy single-atom catalysts

The controllable anchoring of multiple isolated metal atoms into a single support exhibits scientific and technological opportunities, while the synthesis of catalysts with multiple single metal atoms remains a challenge and has been rarely reported. Herein, we present a general route for anchoring up to eleven metals as highly dispersed single-atom centers on porous nitride-doped carbon supports with the developed movable type printing method, and label them as high-entropy single-atom catalysts. Various high-entropy single-atom catalysts with tunable multicomponent are successfully synthesized with the same method by adjusting only the printing templates and carbonization parameters. To prove utility, quinary high-entropy single-atom catalysts (FeCoNiCuMn) is investigated as oxygen reduction reaction catalyst with much more positive activity and durability than commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work broadens the family of single-atom catalysts and opens a way to investigate highly efficient single-atom catalysts with multiple compositions.

It is challenging to integrate multi-single metal atoms into one support. In this work, the authors demonstrate the production of high-entropy single-atom catalysts via a movable typing method, which enables the anchor up to eleven metals as highly dispersed single-atom active centers on the carbon support for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Noble Metal-Based Catalysts with Core-Shell Structure for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Progress and Prospective

With the deterioration of the ecological environment and the depletion of fossil energy, fuel cells, representing a new generation of clean energy, have received widespread attention. This review summarized recent progress in noble metal-based core-shell catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The novel testing methods, performance evaluation parameters and research methods of ORR were briefly introduced. The effects of the preparation method, temperature, kinds of doping elements and the number of shell layers on the ORR performances of noble metal-based core-shell catalysts were highlighted. The difficulties of mass production and the high cost of noble metal-based core-shell nanostructured ORR catalysts were also summarized. Thus, in order to promote the commercialization of noble metal-based core-shell catalysts, research directions and prospects on the further development of high performance ORR catalysts with simple synthesis and low cost are presented.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Energy Conversion and Storage: Design Strategies Under and Beyond the Energy Scaling Relationship

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the essential module in energy conversion and storage devices such as electrolyzer, rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. The adsorption energy scaling relations between the reaction intermediates, however, impose a large intrinsic overpotential and sluggish reaction kinetics on OER catalysts. Developing advanced electrocatalysts with high activity and stability based on non-noble metal materials is still a grand challenge. Central to the rational design of novel and high-efficiency catalysts is the development and understanding of quantitative structure-activity relationships, which correlate the catalytic activities with structural and electronic descriptors. This paper comprehensively reviews the benchmark descriptors for OER electrolysis, aiming to give an in-depth understanding on the origins of the electrocatalytic activity of the OER and further contribute to building the theory of electrocatalysis. Meanwhile, the cutting-edge research frontiers for proposing new OER paradigms and crucial strategies to circumvent the scaling relationship are also summarized. Challenges, opportunities and perspectives are discussed, intending to shed some light on the rational design concepts and advance the development of more efficient catalysts for enhancing OER performance.

Advanced Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Catalysts in Electrochemical Sensors

Developing efficient catalysts is vital for the application of electrochemical sensors. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with high porosity, large specific surface area, good conductivity, and biocompatibility, have been widely used in catalysis, adsorption, separation, and energy storage applications. In this invited review, the recent advances of a novel MOF-based catalysts in electrochemical sensors are summarized. Based on the structure-activity-performance relationship of MOF-based catalysts, their mechanism as electrochemical sensor, including metal cations, synthetic ligands, and structure, are introduced. Then, the MOF-based composites are successively divided into metal-based, carbon-based, and other MOF-based composites. Furthermore, their application in environmental monitoring, food safety control, and clinical diagnosis is discussed. The perspective and challenges for advanced MOF-based composites are proposed at the end of this contribution.

General Method for Synthesizing Effective and Durable Electrocatalysts Derived from Cellulose for Microbial Fuel Cells

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can be capable of both wastewater treatment and electricity generation, which necessarily depends on the increasing cathodic performances and stability at low cost to realize industrialization. Herein, cellulose, a commercially available and sustainable material, was oxidized as a carbon precursor to produce the oxygen species synergizing the nitrogen-doped carbon (CON-900) catalyst by a facile in situ nitrogen doping method. The incorporation of nitrogen and oxygen with a high content creates more active centers. Meanwhile, the hierarchical porosity of CON-900 contributes to a high specific surface area (652 m² g^-1) and the exposure of accessible active sites. As expected, CON-900 exhibits considerable activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, excellent operating stability, and high poisoning resistance. In addition, the MFC fabricated with CON-900 as a cathode catalyst demonstrates a maximum power density of 1014 ± 23 mW m^-2, which is comparable with that of the Pt/C cathode (1062 ± 14 mW m^-2). This work offers a facile and versatile strategy for various biomass materials to develop low-cost and high-efficiency carbon-based catalysts for MFCs and beyond.

A rational synthesis of ultrasmall palladium-based alloys with superhydrophilicity as biocompatible agents and recyclable catalysts

As essential controlling parameters, the local surface area (size distribution) and polarity property of the surface molecules can determine the catalytic activity and biocompatibility directly. Here, ultrasmall palladium-based alloys (FePd, FePdCo, and FePdCu NCs) were developed to serve as artificial degradation catalysts with superhydrophilicity (SPh), biocompatibility, and reusability, which were referred to as "biocatalysts". As synthesized in aqueous solvent with negative surface potential while dispersing in water medium, because of the surface biological molecules effect. The obtained alloys illustrated a size distribution of about 3.5 nm. Additionally, owing to SPh property, these alloys could be stored in water up to 30 days without any precipitation and retained their monodisperse morphology in colloidal solutions. The cytotoxicity assessment of the alloys by exposing to L-929 cells over 3 days indicated that it maintained cell viability of >80% even up to 390 μg mL-1 (concentration of alloys). Furthermore, they exhibited an obvious enhancement in the catalytic performance for degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The recyclable utilization of biocatalysts demonstrates durable stability even after 8 reduction cycles.

Synthesis and Design of a Highly Stable Platinum Nickel Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Exploring effective, stable, and affordable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is very significant for the practical application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. In this work, a facile and expandable method is developed to prepare ultrathin PtNi nanowires (NWs) with various Pt/Ni contents, and the ORR performance of the synthesized samples is thoroughly investigated. Pt3.2Ni NWs show the best ORR performance among the studied samples and, notably, exhibit much better ORR activity and stability than those of the Pt/C catalyst even after a 300,000-continuous cycling test. This work confirms that the initial Pt/Ni ratio plays a critical role in the ORR activity and stability of PtNi NWs, and the structure of the PtNi NWs can be well retained after the durability test. Additionally, the structure and performance of Pt3.2Ni NWs are investigated in detail during various cycles, and the performance decay is attributed to the dealloying of Ni and the corrosion of the one-dimensional structure after a prolonged durability test. This work provides a desirable method for rationally synthesizing a highly efficient ORR electrocatalyst with remarkable stability.

Holey platinum nanotubes for ethanol electrochemical reforming in aqueous solution

The catalytic/electrocatalytic performance of platinum (Pt) nanostructures highly relates to their morphology. Herein, we propose a facile self-template pyrolysis strategy at high temperature to synthesize one-dimensionally holey Pt nanotubes (Pt-hNTs) using Pt^II-dimethylglyoxime complex (Pt^II-DMG) nanorods as the reaction precursor. The coordination capability of DMG results in the generation of Pt^II-DMG nanorods, whereas the reducibility of DMG at high temperature leads to the reduction of Pt^II species in Pt^II-DMG nanorods. During the reaction process, the inside-out Ostwald ripening phenomenon leads to the hollow morphology of Pt-hNTs. Benefiting from the physical characteristics of hollow and holey structure, Pt-hNTs with clean surface show superior electroactivity and durability for catalyzing ethanol electrooxidation as well as hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media. Under optimized experimental conditions, the constructed symmetric Pt-hNTs||Pt-hNTs ethanol electrolyzer only requires an electrolysis voltage of 0.40 V to achieve the electrochemical hydrogen production, demonstrating a highly energy saving strategy relative to traditional water electrolysis.

Progress in the development of heteroatom-doped nickel phosphates for electrocatalytic water splitting

Hydrogen energy is expected to replace fossil fuels as a mainstream energy source in the future. Currently, hydrogen production via water electrolysis yields high hydrogen purity with easy operation and without producing polluting side products. Presently, platinum group metals and their oxides are the most effective catalysts for water splitting; however, their low abundance and high cost hinder large-scale hydrogen production, especially in alkaline and neutral media. Therefore, the development of high-efficiency, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts is crucial to improving the overpotential and lowering the electrical energy consumption. As a solution, Ni₂P has attracted particular attention, owing to its desirable electrical conductivity, high corrosion resistance, and remarkable catalytic activity for overall water splitting, and thus, is a promising substitute for platinum-group catalysts. However, the catalytic performance and durability of raw Ni₂P are still inferior to those of noble metal-based catalysts. Heteroatom doping is a universal strategy for enhancing the performance of Ni₂P for water electrolysis over a wide pH range, because the electronic structure and crystal structure of the catalyst can be modulated, and the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates can be adjusted via doping, thus optimizing the reaction performance. In this review, first, the reaction mechanisms of water electrolysis, including the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction and anodic oxygen evolution reaction, are briefly introduced. Then, progress into heteroatom-doped nickel phosphide research in recent years is assessed, and a discussion of each representative work is given. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for developing advanced Ni₂P based electrocatalysts are proposed and discussed.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs): Advances and Challenges

The study of the electrochemical catalyst conversion of renewable electricity and carbon oxides into chemical fuels attracts a great deal of attention by different researchers. The main role of this process is in mitigating the worldwide energy crisis through a closed technological carbon cycle, where chemical fuels, such as hydrogen, are stored and reconverted to electricity via electrochemical reaction processes in fuel cells. The scientific community focuses its efforts on the development of high-performance polymeric membranes together with nanomaterials with high catalytic activity and stability in order to reduce the platinum group metal applied as a cathode to build stacks of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to work at low and moderate temperatures. The design of new conductive membranes and nanoparticles (NPs) whose morphology directly affects their catalytic properties is of utmost importance. Nanoparticle morphologies, like cubes, octahedrons, icosahedrons, bipyramids, plates, and polyhedrons, among others, are widely studied for catalysis applications. The recent progress around the high catalytic activity has focused on the stabilizing agents and their potential impact on nanomaterial synthesis to induce changes in the morphology of NPs.

A cathodic photocorrosion-assisted strategy to construct a CdS/Pt heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

A novel strategy based on the cathodic photocorrosion effect of CdS was developed to fabricate a CdS/Pt heterojunction photocatalyst, achieving a remarkable enhancement for H₂ evolution.
