Low biosorption of PVA coated engineered magnetic nanoparticles in granular sludge assessed by magnetic susceptibility

The potential application of bio-based ceramic/organic xerogel derived from the plant sources: A new green adsorbent for removal of antibiotics from pharmaceutical wastewater

A bio-based ceramic/organic xerogel (BCO-xerogel) was obtained from the combination of sugarcane bagasse ash, polyvinyl alcohol, and pine cone-derived tannin extract, which are abundant, non-toxic, and renewable sources. The as-prepared BCO-xerogel was used as a low-cost green adsorbent for the eliminate of four types of the most widely used antibiotics, including amoxicillin (AMX), tetracycline (TC), cefalexin (CLX), and penicillin G (PEN G) residuals from contaminated water. The simultaneous effects conventional variables including adsorbent dosage, antibiotic concentrations, solution pH, and contact time were studied and optimized by central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed as a statistical formula to determine the significance of operating environmental conditions and their interactions with 95% confidence limits. Under optimized conditions, the experimental removal efficiencies for AMX, TC, CLX, and PEN G were 98.78 ± 3.25, 99.12 ± 2.52, 98.02 ± 1.98, and 98.42 ± 2.19, respectively. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were better fitted with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was endothermic, spontaneous, and occurred by combination of physical and chemical mechanisms. Also, evaluating the ability of BCO-xerogel to adsorptive removal of AMX, TC, CLX, and PEN G antibiotics in real wastewaters showed about 97.4-98.6% adsorption efficiency in river water and about 67.1-71.3% in three hospital effluents. After the adsorption process, the antibiotic-loaded adsorbent was regenerated by NaOH (0.01 mol L^-1), and the reusability tests showed that the removal efficiencies of the antibiotics in the four recovery steps were still above 90%. This work explored the development of green, efficient, and economical bio-adsorbent that can be utilized for the removal of antibiotics from contaminated wastewaters.

How to measure diffusion coefficients in biofilms: A critical analysis

Biofilm and granular sludge processes depend on diffusion of substrates. Despite their importance for the kinetic description of biofilm reactors, biofilm diffusion coefficients reported in literature vary greatly. The aim of this simulation study was to determine to what extent the methods that are used to measure diffusion coefficients contribute to the reported variability. Granular sludge was used as a case study. Six common methods were selected, based on mass balances and microelectrodes. A Monte Carlo simulation was carried out to determine the theoretical precision of each method, considering the uncertainty of various experimental parameters. A model-based simulation of a diffusion experiment was used to determine the theoretical accuracy as a result of six sources of error: solute sorption, biomass deactivation, mass transfer boundary layer, granule roughness, granule shape, and granule size distribution. Based on the Monte Carlo analysis, the relative standard deviation of the different methods ranged from 5% to 61%. In a theoretical experiment, the six error sources led to an 37% underestimation of the diffusion coefficient. This highlights that diffusion coefficients cannot be determined accurately with existing experimental methods. At the same time, the need for measuring precise diffusion coefficients as input value for biofilm modeling can be questioned, since the output of biofilm models has a limited sensitivity toward the diffusion coefficient.

A Guideline for Effectively Synthesizing and Characterizing Magnetic Nanoparticles for Advancing Nanobiotechnology: A Review

The remarkable multimodal functionalities of magnetic nanoparticles, conferred by their size and morphology, are very important in resolving challenges slowing the progression of nanobiotechnology. The rapid and revolutionary expansion of magnetic nanoparticles in nanobiotechnology, especially in nanomedicine and therapeutics, demands an overview of the current state of the art for synthesizing and characterizing magnetic nanoparticles. In this review, we explain the synthesis routes for tailoring the size, morphology, composition, and magnetic properties of the magnetic nanoparticles. The pros and cons of the most popularly used characterization techniques for determining the aforementioned parameters, with particular focus on nanomedicine and biosensing applications, are discussed. Moreover, we provide numerous biomedical applications and highlight their challenges and requirements that must be met using the magnetic nanoparticles to achieve the most effective outcomes. Finally, we conclude this review by providing an insight towards resolving the persisting challenges and the future directions. This review should be an excellent source of information for beginners in this field who are looking for a groundbreaking start but they have been overwhelmed by the volume of literature.

Landfill leachate treatment by sorption in magnetic particles: preliminary study

Leachates are still an open issue in environmental protection. Many of the applied methods for their treatment present low efficiency and thus need to be used collectively. In practice reverse osmosis is mostly used, as it is the most effective option, regardless of its cost. Magnetic methods to treat effluents have been used for water and wastewater treatment by the use of magnetic particles together with magnetic separation for the removal of contaminants. However, large-scale applications are few or even non-existent when we deal with complex contaminated media such as landfill leachates, for which not even research studies at laboratorial scale with real samples have been done yet. In this work, we apply for the first time magnetic sorption for the treatment of leachates, and close the full cycle by studying the regeneration and re-use of the magnetic particles; we also study the influence of the concentration of magnetic particles, the use of several pre-treatment methodologies and the type of particle used in the process, in real landfill samples from the waste treatment plant of Salamanca (Spain), for the removal of COD, NO₃^-, NO₂^-, NH₄⁺, Total-N, PO₄^3-, SO₄^2- and Cl^-. Regeneration of the magnetic particles after being used in the sorption stage is also studied, as well as their efficiency regarding their re-use. It is also determined the optimum number of batches for complete desorption and for regeneration of the particles, the effect of successive regeneration and re-use cycles, the use of two different regeneration methods, the efficiency of the desorption, the effect of the quantity of solvent and the influence of the time of sorption. Due to its innovative character and the complexity of the media, this work represents a first preliminary approach and, although some promising results have been obtained, further studies are required to completely understand and evaluate the proposed treatment process.

Characterization techniques for nanoparticles: comparison and complementarity upon studying nanoparticle properties

Nanostructures have attracted huge interest as a rapidly growing class of materials for many applications. Several techniques have been used to characterize the size, crystal structure, elemental composition and a variety of other physical properties of nanoparticles. In several cases, there are physical properties that can be evaluated by more than one technique. Different strengths and limitations of each technique complicate the choice of the most suitable method, while often a combinatorial characterization approach is needed. In addition, given that the significance of nanoparticles in basic research and applications is constantly increasing, it is necessary that researchers from separate fields overcome the challenges in the reproducible and reliable characterization of nanomaterials, after their synthesis and further process (e.g. annealing) stages. The principal objective of this review is to summarize the present knowledge on the use, advances, advantages and weaknesses of a large number of experimental techniques that are available for the characterization of nanoparticles. Different characterization techniques are classified according to the concept/group of the technique used, the information they can provide, or the materials that they are destined for. We describe the main characteristics of the techniques and their operation principles and we give various examples of their use, presenting them in a comparative mode, when possible, in relation to the property studied in each case.

Short and long term biosorption of silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles in heterotrophic biofilms

The increased application of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) in industrial processes and consumer products has raised concerns about their impact on health and environmental safety. When ENP enter the global water cycle by e.g. wastewater streams, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) represent potential sinks for ENP. During biological WWT, the attachment of ENP to biofilms is responsible for the desired removal of ENP from the water phase avoiding their release into the aquatic environment. However, the fundamental mechanisms guiding the interactions between ENP and biofilms are not yet fully understood. Therefore, this study investigates the behavior and biosorption of inorganic ENP, here magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with silica (scFe3O4-NP), with heterotrophic biofilms at different time scales. Their magnetic properties enable to follow scFe3O4-NP in the biofilm system by a magnetic susceptibility balance and magnetic resonance imaging. Biofilms were exposed to scFe3O4-NP at short contact times (5 min) in flow cells and complementary, scFe3O4-NP were introduced into a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) to be observed for 27 d. Mass balances revealed that scFe3O4-NP sorbed to the biofilm within a few minutes, but that the total biosorption was rather low (3.2 μg Fe/mg TSS). scFe3O4-NP mainly sorbed to the biofilm surface inducing the detachment of outer biofilm parts starting after an exposure time of 3h in the MBBR. The biosorption depended on the exposure concentration of scFe3O4-NP, but less on the contact time. Most scFe3O4-NP exited the flow cell (up to 65%) and the MBBR (57%) via the effluent. This effect was favored by the stabilization of scFe3O4-NP in the bulk liquid by organic matter leading to a low retention capacity of the MBBR system. The results contribute to improve our understanding about the fate of ENP in environmental and in technical biofilm systems and give indications for future investigations needed.
