Groundwater and soil contamination by LNAPL: State of the art and future challenges

Contamination by Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL) represents a challenge due to the difficulties encountered in its underground assessment and recovery. The major risks arising from subsoil LNAPL accumulation face human health and environment, gaining a social relevance also in the frame of a continuously changing climate. This paper reports on a literature review about the underground contamination by LNAPL, with the aims of providing a categorization of the aspects involved in this topic, analyzing the current state of the art, underlying potential lacks and future perspectives. The review was focused on papers published in the 2012-2022 time-interval, in journals indexed in Scopus and WoS databases, by querying "LNAPL" within article title, abstract and/or key words. 245 papers were collected and classified according to three "key approaches" -namely laboratory activity, field based-data studies and mathematical simulations- and subordinate "key themes", so to allow summarizing and commenting the main aspects based on the application setting, content and scope. Results show that there is a wide experience on plume dynamics and evolution, detection and monitoring through direct and indirect surveys, oil recovery and natural attenuation processes. Few cues of innovations were found regarding both the use of new materials and/or specific field configuration for remediation, and the application of new techniques for plume detection. Some limitations were found in the common oversimplification of the polluted media in laboratory or mathematical models, where the contamination is set within homogeneous porous environments, and in the low number of studies focused on rock masses, where the discontinuous hydraulic behavior complicates the address and modeling of the issue. This paper represents a reference for a quick update on the addressed topic, along with a starting point to develop new ideas and cues for the advance in one of the greatest environmental banes of the current century.

Laser-induced fluorescence logging as a high-resolution characterisation tool to assess LNAPL mobility

High-resolution characterisation tools such as Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) logging represent a step forward towards a more effective management of sites contaminated by light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) petroleum hydrocarbons. In this paper, the applicability of LIF response as an indicator of LNAPL mobility at one site with an unconsolidated aquifer was investigated. LIF profiles were logged adjacent to twin coring locations and wells with LNAPL transmissivity (T_n) measurements in a heterogeneous gasoline contaminated site in Western Australia. LIF response was correlated to T_n to a greater extent than LNAPL saturation (S_n) measurements from coring. In particular, LIF signal maxima were a better indicator of T_n than the integral LIF signal. Furthermore, LIF allowed rapid identification of areas with long-term near-immobile LNAPL (entrapped and residual) because of the multi-wavelength waveforms associated with distinct subsurface characteristics. It was also demonstrated that the delineation of presumably less-mobile intervals could be enhanced by using the relative LIF response in the 350 nm wavelength channel. Thus, this work gave evidence that LIF logging provides valuable information about LNAPL distribution and mobility in commonly found subsurface settings, despite generally poor correlations with S_n measurements. LIF probes can be successfully used to guide the installation and application of more costly conventional methods in addition to the development of existing site models.

Surfactant flooding makes a comeback: Results of a full-scale, field implementation to recover mobilized NAPL

Non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) remediation techniques using surfactants, such as enhanced pump and treat (also known as Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation, "SEAR") and micellar flooding provide a faster and more efficient way to recover NAPL from the subsurface. Micellar flooding is a recovery technique that relies on the ability of surfactants to mobilize the NAPL phase by reducing the interfacial tension between the aqueous phase and the NAPL. The application of micellar flooding for NAPL recovery has been limited to laboratory studies and some pilot-scale field applications primarily due to concerns that the technology might lead to uncontrolled movement of NAPL. This paper presents results from a full-scale field application of the micellar flood process designed to mobilize and recover an LNAPL (Jet fuel) from a surficial sandy aquifer located at a tank facility in western Jutland, Denmark. Phase behavior and flow experiments were conducted with field samples to identify suitable surfactant formulations. A field-scale simulation model was developed that indicated that a line-drive pattern with hydraulic control wells would be optimal for NAPL recovery. In addition to monitoring during the field implementation, monitoring was conducted immediately after and for a period of >1 year. The field implementation resulted in >90% recovery (approximately 36,000 Kg of LNAPL) based on the mass balance using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and chemical soil analysis (total petroleum hydrocarbon or TPH and BTEX) data. Post-surfactant flood site monitoring consisted of sampling water from multi-levels and from recovery wells. Groundwater samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX). The pre-treatment and post-treatment mass discharges were also monitored, which led to a relationship between mass discharge with the mass reduction in the source zone. Also, the mass discharge Γ-model commonly used for DNAPL modeling was successfully implemented for LNAPL remediation. Studies of field applications of surfactant remediation processes are not readily available; it is especially rare to present a study of micellar flooding implementation for full-scale remediation processes.
