Testing the ability of plants to access potassium from framework silicate minerals

The Impact Ground Phonolite Rock's Potassium Solubilization in Tropical Soil Depends on the Cultivated Forage Species

Cover crops can be used to accelerate the solubilization process of low-solubility fertilizers; thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of grasses in solubilizing potassium from phonolite rock powder. With a 2 × 5 factorial scheme, two doses of phonolite rock powder, equivalent to 0 and 8 t ha-1, were combined with four grass species (Urochloa ruziziensis, U. decumbens, U. humidicola, and Andropogon gayanus), besides a control treatment without any cover crop. The dry matter production of the aerial parts of the plants was evaluated at days 40 and 70 post-emergence, and then the concentration of potassium in the plants and the soil was evaluated (exchangeable, non-exchangeable, structural, and total potassium contents). In the soil, the phonolitic rock powder increased the exchangeable, non-exchangeable, structural, and total K contents, favoring the absorption of K and the production of the dry mass of the three Urochloa, but U. decumbens stood out because it promoted greater availability of K in the system compared to the cultivation of other plant species. This research proposes the inclusion of U. decumbens in production systems that receive phonolitic rock, constituting a sustainable strategy to improve its agronomic efficiency.

Remineralizing soils? The agricultural usage of silicate rock powders: A review

Soil nutrient depletion threatens global food security and has been seriously underestimated for potassium (K) and several micronutrients. This is particularly the case for highly weathered soils in tropical countries, where classical soluble fertilizers are often not affordable or not accessible. One way to replenish macro- and micronutrients are ground silicate rock powders (SRPs). Rock forming silicate minerals contain most nutrients essential for higher plants, yet slow and inconsistent weathering rates have restricted their use in the past. Recent findings, however, challenge past agronomic objections which insufficiently addressed the factorial complexity of the weathering process. This review therefore first presents a framework with the most relevant factors for the weathering of SRPs through which several outcomes of prior studies can be explained. A subsequent analysis of 48 crop trials reveals the potential as alternative K source and multi-nutrient soil amendment for tropical soils, whereas the benefits for temperate soils are currently inconclusive. Beneficial results prevail for mafic and ultramafic rocks like basalts and rocks containing nepheline or glauconite. Several rock modifications are highly efficient in increasing the agronomic effectiveness of SRPs. Enhanced weathering of SRPs could additionally sequester substantial amounts of CO₂ from the atmosphere and silicon (Si) supply can induce a broad spectrum of plant biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Recycling massive amounts of rock residues from domestic mining industries could furthermore resolve serious disposal challenges and improve fertilizer self-sufficiency. In conclusion, under the right circumstances, SRPs could not only advance low-cost and regional soil sustaining crop production but contribute to various sustainable development goals.

Removal of metals from aqueous solutions using dried Cladophora parriaudii of varying biochemical composition

Macroalgal biosorption has shown promise for the removal of metal ions from wastewaters, whose presence can pose a threat to the aquatic environment. There is a wealth of literature published on macroalgal biosorption, the common thread being that the biosorbent material was collected from the field, under undefined conditions. These studies offer little insight into the impact of prior cultivation or biomass production practices upon the biosorbent material, its adsorptive physico-chemical properties and its subsequent capacity for metal removal. The present study sought to investigate the influence of changes in macroalgal cultivation, specifically nutrient regime, upon biomass properties and the resultant adsorption performance. The macroalga Cladophora parriaudii was cultivated under six different nutrient regimes; 2:1 and 12:1 N:P molar ratios, with nitrogen supplied either as ammonium (NH₄⁺), nitrate (NO₃^-), or urea (CO(NH₂)₂). These nutrient regimes were designed to produce biomass of varying biochemical and cell surface profiles. After cultivation, the biomass was rinsed, dried, biochemically analysed and then used for the removal of four individual metals from solution. Metal removal varied considerably between treatments and across initial metal concentrations, with removal values of 46-85%, 9-80%, 8-71%, and 49-94% achieved for Al, Cu, Mn, and Pb, respectively, with initial metal concentrations varying between 0 and 150 mg L^-1. The observed variation in metal removal can only be attributed to differences in biochemistry and cell surface properties of the biosorbent induced by nutrient regime, as all other variables were constant. This study demonstrates that prior cultivation conditions influence the biochemistry of a biosorbent material, namely macroalgae Cladophora parriaudii, which has an impact upon metal removal. This aspect should be given due consideration for future biosorption research and when reviewing already published literature.

Glacial Rock Flour as Soil Amendment in Subarctic Farming in South Greenland

Agriculture in subarctic regions is limited by a short and cold growing season. With warming in the region, the number of growing days and, consequently, the potential for agricultural intensification and expansion may increase. However, subarctic soils are typically acidic, low in plant-available nutrients, and coarsely textured, so they require soil amendment prior to intensification. This is the case in South Greenland, where we tested the use of glacial rock flour (GRF) produced by glaciers as a soil amendment. An experiment was made on a farm in South Greenland during the 2019 summer to quantify the short-term effect of applying GRF to a field dominated by perennial timothy grass. Three treatments were compared to control sites (n = 5): 20 t GRF ha−1 without conventional NPK-fertilizer, as well as 20 and 40 t GRF ha−1 in combination with 25% NPK-fertilizer. The experiment showed no significant response in biomass production (aboveground and belowground) for the plots treated with GRF only. The low rate of GRF combined with 25% NKP showed a marked and significant increase in yield in contrast to a high GRF rate with NPK, which resulted in a significant reduction in yields. The chemical composition of the plants versus soil and GRF showed that the plant uptake of nutrients was significantly higher for NPK-fertilized plots, as expected, but no differences were found between GRF-treated plots and the control plots with respect to nutrient availability or pH in the soil. We conclude that adding water and fertilizer has the potential to increase yields in South Greenland, but applying glacial rock flour as a short-term agricultural supplement needs to be further investigated before it can be recommended.

Local fertilizers to achieve food self-sufficiency in Africa

One of the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations (UN) aims by 2030 to "end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture". Fertilizers will play a pivotal role in achieving that goal given that ~90% of crop production growth is expected to come from higher yields and increased cropping intensity. However, materials-science research on fertilizers has received little attention, especially in Africa. In this work we present an overview of the use of fertilizers in Africa to date, and based on that overview we suggest future research directions for material scientists. Developing a new generation of local and affordable fertilizers will launch Africa into a new phase of remunerative agricultural production that in turn will lead to both food self-sufficiency and considerable progress towards goals of food and nutrition security.
