Gypsum in animal slurry systems enhances generation of hydrogen sulphide and increases occupational exposure hazard

Mitigation of ammonia and methane emissions with manure amendments during storage of cattle slurry

This study aimed at assessing the efficacy of manure amendments in abating ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4) emissions during storage. Two experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 was conducted using 20 L of slurry for 98 days. Treatments were: aluminium sulphate (alum), lactogypsum, zeolite, actiglene, ammonium thiosulphate, biochar, dairy processing waste, Digest-IT and control (without amendment). Experiment 2 was conducted using 660 L of slurry in underground storage tanks for 77 days. Treatments were: sulphuric acid, gypsum, biochar and control (without amendment). NH3 measurements for experiment 1 and experiment 2 were conducted using the photoacoustic gas monitor and dynamic chamber techniques, respectively. CH4 was measured using the static chamber technique in both experiments. The effect of amendments on slurry composition was determined at the end of the experiments. Experiment 1 showed a significant reduction in NH3 emissions in the alum (82%), lactogypsum (46%) and zeolite (32%) treatments relative to the control (100.3% total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN)). CH4 was reduced significantly in the alum (87%), ammonium thiosulphate (64%) and lactogypsum (67%) relative to the control (291.9 g m-2). Experiment 2 showed a significant reduction (32%) in NH3 emissions in the sulphuric acid relative to the control (4.4% TAN). CH4 was reduced significantly in the sulphuric acid (46%), gypsum (39%) and biochar (15%) treatments relative to the control (291.9 g m-2). In general, amendments altered slurry composition such as dry matter, volatile solids, carbon and nitrogen contents at the end of storage. Lactogypsum, alum and sulphuric acid were effective in abating both NH3 and CH4 emissions and can contribute to improving air quality.

An Au/SnO-SnO2 nanosheet based composite used for rapid detection of hydrogen sulphide

In this work, a new type of H₂S sensor was fabricated by means of drop-coating of an Au/SnO-SnO₂ nanosheet material, which was prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal reaction, onto a gold electrode in an alumina ceramic tube with the formation of a thin nanocomposite film. The microstructure and morphology of the nanosheet composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A gas-sensitivity study presented good H₂S-sensing performance of such Au/SnO-SnO₂ nanosheet composites. At an optimal operating temperature of 240 °C and ambient temperature of 25 °C, the resulting sensor showed a good linear response to H₂S in a range of 1.0 to 100 ppm with a low detection limit of 0.7 ppm, and a very fast response-recovery time of 22 s for response and 63 s for recovery, respectively. The sensor was also unaffected by ambient humidity and had good reproducibility and selectivity. When being applied to the monitoring of H₂S in an atmospheric environment in a pig farm, the response signal to H₂S was only attenuated by 4.69% within 90 days, proving that the sensor had a long and stable service lifetime for continuous running and showing its important practical application prospects.

ZnO@CuO hollow nanosphere-based composites used for the sensitive detection of hydrogen sulfide with long-term stability

In this study, zinc oxide@cupric oxide hollow nanospheres (ZnO@CuO HNS, 330 nm in diameter) were successfully prepared by a hard-template method using amino-phenolformaldehyde resin spheres (APF) as the templates. A new type of thin-film gas sensor toward hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was fabricated by means of drop-coating on the gold electrode of an alumina ceramic tube. The microstructure and morphology of the nanosphere composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the gas-sensing performance of the composites toward the detection of H₂S were investigated. The ZnO@CuO nanocomposite with a hollow structure exhibited good gas-sensing properties. Under the optimum operating temperature of 260 °C, ambient temperature of 30 °C, and ambient humidity of 70%, the linear response of the sensor to H₂S was in the concentration range of 0.1-100 ppm, and its detection limit reached 0.0611 ppm, with a quick response time of 78 s. Also, the sensor possessed good repeatability, selectivity, and stability. The long-term stability and run duration of such sensors were pronounced, with only a 1.9% reduction in the signal after the continuous monitoring of H₂S gas in a pig farm for 18 months using Alibaba's cloud remote transmission system, which presents an important practical application prospect in atmosphere environment monitoring on livestock-raising fields.

Electrochemical mitigation of hydrogen sulfide in deep-pit swine manure storage

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a toxic and hazardous gas and is commonly present in livestock operations, which occasionally causes associated exposure accidents. This study evaluated the effectiveness of electrochemical control of H₂S in lab-scale swine manure storage using different electrode materials, and further selected suitable materials to demonstrate the performance of a pilot-scale field test in the deep-pit manure storage of a 200-head swine barn. In the lab-scale test, electrochemical sulfide oxidation mainly contributed to the H₂S mitigation, resulting in high H₂S removal efficiencies when using low carbon steel (LCS) and stainless steel 304 (SS304) as electrodes. Based on their better H₂S treatment performance and lower material costs, LCS and SS304 were selected for the pilot-scale test. In a 92-day operation, the pilot-scale demonstration showed H₂S removal efficiencies of 84.0% and 63.5% for LCS and SS304, respectively. A techno-economic assessment indicated that the installation and operation of the electrochemical system accounted for 16% of barn construction cost using LCS as electrodes. Further optimization may substantially decrease the electrode material consumption and the overall cost.

Microbial sulfate reduction by Desulfovibrio is an important source of hydrogen sulfide from a large swine finishing facility

There is still a lack of understanding of H₂S formation in agricultural waste, which leads to poor odour prevention and control. Microbial sulfate reduction is a major process contributing to sulfide formation in natural and technogenic environments with high sulfate and low oxygen concentration. Agricultural waste can be considered a low-sulfate system with no obvious input of oxidised sulfur compounds. The purpose of this study was to characterise a microbial community participating in H₂S production and estimate the microbial sulfate reduction rate (SRR) in manure slurry from a large-scale swine finishing facility in Western Siberia. In a series of manure slurry microcosms, we identified bacterial consortia by 16S rRNA gene profiling and metagenomic analysis and revealed that sulfate-reducing Desulfovibrio were key players responsible for H₂S production. The SRR measured with radioactive sulfate in manure slurry was high and comprised 7.25 nmol S cm^-3 day^-1. Gypsum may be used as a solid-phase electron acceptor for sulfate reduction. Another plausible source of sulfate is a swine diet, which often contains supplements in the form of sulfates, including lysine sulfate. Low-sulfur diet, manure treatment with iron salts, and avoiding gypsum bedding are possible ways to mitigate H₂S emissions from swine manure.
