Potential methane production and molecular characterization of bacterial and archaeal communities in a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland under cold and warm seasons

Saturated constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell system and effect on dissolved oxygen gradient, electricity generation and ammonium removal

The aim of this work was to assess effect of saturated constructed wetland-Microbial fuel cell system on dissolved oxygen gradient, electricity generation and ammonium removal. Two laboratory-scale systems, one planted with Schoenoplectus californicus (SCW1-MFC) and other without plant (SCW2-MFC), were fed discontinuously with synthetic wastewater over 90 days. Both systems were operated at different organic loading rate (12 and 28 g COD/m2d) and ammonium loading rate (1.6 and 3.0 g NH4+- N/m2 d) under open circuit and close circuit mode. The results indicate that between lower and upper zones of wetlands the average values were in the range of 1.22 ± 0.32 to 1.39 ± 0.27 mg O2/L in SCW1-MFC and 1.28 ± 0.24 to 1.56 ± 0.31 mg O2/L in SCW2-MFC. The effect of operating mode (closed and open circuit) and vegetation on DO was not significant (p > 0.05). Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies, fluctuated between 90 and 95% in the SCW1-MFC and 82 and 94% in the SCW2-MFC system. Regarding NH4+- N, removal efficiencies were above 85% in both systems reaching values maximus 98%. The maximum power density generated was 4 and 10 mW/m2 in SCW1-MFC, while SCW2-MFC recorded the highest values (12 and 22 mW/m2).

Factors Influencing Gaseous Emissions in Constructed Wetlands: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an eco-technology for wastewater treatment and are applied worldwide. Due to the regular influx of pollutants, CWs can release considerable quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs), ammonia (NH₃), and other atmospheric pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), etc., which will aggravate global warming, degrade air quality and even threaten human health. However, there is a lack of systematic understanding of factors affecting the emission of these gases in CWs. In this study, we applied meta-analysis to quantitatively review the main influencing factors of GHG emission from CWs; meanwhile, the emissions of NH₃, VOCs, and H₂S were qualitatively assessed. Meta-analysis indicates that horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) CWs emit less CH₄ and N₂O than free water surface flow (FWS) CWs. The addition of biochar can mitigate N₂O emission compared to gravel-based CWs but has the risk of increasing CH₄ emission. Polyculture CWs stimulate CH₄ emission but pose no influence on N₂O emission compared to monoculture CWs. The influent wastewater characteristics (e.g., C/N ratio, salinity) and environmental conditions (e.g., temperature) can also impact GHG emission. The NH₃ volatilization from CWs is positively related to the influent nitrogen concentration and pH value. High plant species richness tends to reduce NH₃ volatilization and plant composition showed greater effects than species richness. Though VOCs and H₂S emissions from CWs do not always occur, it should be a concern when using CWs to treat wastewater containing hydrocarbon and acid. This study provides solid references for simultaneously achieving pollutant removal and reducing gaseous emission from CWs, which avoids the transformation of water pollution into air contamination.

Recent advances in constructed wetlands methane reduction: Mechanisms and methods

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are artificial systems that use natural processes to treat wastewater containing organic pollutants. This approach has been widely applied in both developing and developed countries worldwide, providing a cost-effective method for industrial wastewater treatment and the improvement of environmental water quality. However, due to the large organic carbon inputs, CWs is produced in varying amounts of CH₄ and have the potential to become an important contributor to global climate change. Subsequently, research on the mitigation of CH₄ emissions by CWs is key to achieving sustainable, low-carbon dependency wastewater treatment systems. This review evaluates the current research on CH₄ emissions from CWs through bibliometric analysis, summarizing the reported mechanisms of CH₄ generation, transfer and oxidation in CWs. Furthermore, the important environmental factors driving CH₄ generation in CW systems are summarized, including: temperature, water table position, oxidation reduction potential, and the effects of CW characteristics such as wetland type, plant species composition, substrate type, CW-coupled microbial fuel cell, oxygen supply, available carbon source, and salinity. This review provides guidance and novel perspectives for sustainable and effective CW management, as well as for future studies on CH₄ reduction in CWs.

Effects of bioelectricity generation processes on methane emission and bacterial community in wetland and carbon fate analysis

Wetlands are an important carbon sink for greenhouse gases (GHGs), and embedding microbial fuel cell (MFC) into constructed wetland (CW) has become a new technology to control methane (CH4) emission. Rhizosphere anode CW-MFC was constructed by selecting rhizome-type wetland plants with strong hypoxia tolerance, which could provide photosynthetic organics as alternative fuel. Compared with non-planted system, CH4 emission flux and power output from the planted CW-MFC increased by approximately 0.48 ± 0.02 mg/(m2·h) and 1.07 W/m3, respectively. The CH4 emission flux of the CW-MFC operated under open-circuit condition was approximately 0.46 ± 0.02 mg/(m2·h) higher than that under closed-circuit condition. The results indicated that plants contributed to the CH4 emission from the CW-MFC, especially under open-circuit mode conditions. The CH4 emission from the CW-MFC was proportional to external resistance, and it increased by 0.67 ± 0.01 mg/(m2·h) when the external resistance was adjusted from 100 to 1000 Ω. High throughput sequencing further showed that there was a competitive relationship between electrogenic bacteria and methanogens. The flora abundance of electrogenic bacteria was high, while methanogens mainly consisted of Methanothrix, Methanobacterium and Methanolinea. The form and content of element C were analysed from solid phase, liquid phase and gas phase. It was found that a large amount of carbon source (TC = 254.70 mg/L) was consumed mostly through microbial migration and conversion, and carbon storage and GHGs emission accounted for 60.38% and 35.80%, respectively. In conclusion, carbon transformation in the CW-MFC can be properly regulated via competition of microorganisms driven by environmental factors, which provides a new direction and idea for the control of CH4 emission from wetlands.

Seasonal Enhancement of Nitrogen Removal on Domestic Wastewater Treatment Performance by Partially Saturated and Saturated Hybrid Constructed Wetland

The aim of this study is to evaluate seasonal enhancement of nitrogen removal on domestic wastewater treatment performance by partially saturated and saturated HBCWs. To achieve this, two HBCWs consisting of a vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland, followed by a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (VSSF-HSSF) were evaluated. Two saturation levels were used: (a) partially saturated HB1:VSSF1 (0.6 m)-HSSF1 (0.15 m), (b) saturated HB2: VSSF2 (0.8 m)-HSSF2 (0.25 m). Each unit was planted with Schoenoplectus californicus and was operated for 297 days. The removal efficiencies in HB1 and HB2 were above 70%, 86%, 77% and 55% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), nitrogen as ammonium (NH4+-N), and total nitrogen (TN), respectively. For VSSF, a higher level of saturation (from 0.6 to 0.8 m) meant a decrease of 17% in the TN removal efficiencies, and for HSSF, an increase from 0.15 to 0.25 m of saturation meant a decrease of 11 and 10% in the NH4+-N and TN removal efficiencies, respectively. Thus, the increase of saturation level in HBCWs reduces the transformation and/or removal of components of the wastewaters to be treated, particularly nitrogen. Through this research, the possibility of optimizing the transformation of nitrogen with partially saturated hybrids can be examined.

Evaluation of long-term phosphorus uptake by Schoenoplectus californicus and Phragmites australis plants in pilot-scale constructed wetlands

The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term phosphorus (P) retention in a pilot-scale system made of four horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. Each wetland had an area of 4.5 m² and was operated for nearly 8 years (2833 days). Two wetlands with Schoenoplectus californicus (HSSF-Sch) and the other two with Phragmites australis (HSSF-Phr) were planted. The P removal efficiency was 18% for both types of HSSF wetlands. The primary factors that correlated with long-term P retention efficiency in HSSF were phosphorus loading rate (PLR), hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Average biomass production of HSSF-Phr and HSSF-Sch was 4.8 and 12.1 kg dry weight (DW)/m², respectively. The P uptake by the plant increased over the years of operation from 1.8 gP/m2 to 7.1 gP/m2 for Phragmites and from 3.2 to 7.4 gP/m2 for Schoenoplectus over the same periods. Moreover, the warm season (S/Sm) was more efficient reaching 14% P uptake than the cold season (F/W) with 9%. These results suggest that both plants' P retention capacity in HSSF systems represents a sustainable treatment in the long term.Novelty statement Long-term (8 years) phosphorus uptake by Schoenoplectus californicus and Phragmites australis and retention in pilot-scale constructed wetlands are evaluated. Schoenoplectus californicus is an uncommon species that has been less studied for phosphorus uptake compared to Phragmites australis, a globally known species in constructed wetlands. Moreover, some studies evaluating the performance of constructed wetland systems for domestic wastewater treatment are usually limited in time (1-3 years). Therefore, this long-term study demonstrates that the plant plays an important role in phosphorus retention, especially the species Schoenoplectus californicus. So, the phosphorus uptake by plants can contribute between 9 and 14% of the phosphorus load of constructed wetland systems in early years of operation.

In-depth assessment of microbial communities in the full-scale vertical flow treatment wetlands fed with raw domestic wastewater

A multiphase study was proposed to examine microbial communities linked to the nitrogen cycle in the first stage of four full-scale French vertical flow treatment systems. To this end, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was performed for structural assessment and quantitative PCR (qPCR) to enumerate the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing (AOB). 16S rRNA sequencing was used to assess the taxonomic profile followed by putative assessment of functional genes. The samples were collected under different conditions, such as operational time (presence/absence of sludge layer on the surface of the filters), season (winter and summer), sampling depth (0, 15 and 30 cm) and operation cycle (rest and feed periods). A structural disparity was noted in the upper layers, whereas higher similarity at 30 cm was observed highlighting the effect of organic matter on bacterial diversity. The 7th rest day was highlighted by an apparent decline in the microbial community abundance. Additionally, qPCR indicated that the largest amount of AOB was found at 30 cm depth and during the feeding period. From the taxonomic profile, Mycobacterium, Acinetobacter, Flavobacterium, and Nitrospira were the most abundant genre found in all systems. The functional prediction results showed predicted genes linked to the denitrification process. The results suggested that operating time and season were responsible for the pattern of the microbial community behavior. This study allowed us to further understand the bacterial dynamics and to advance the idea of design modifications made in the first stage of the classical French system to improve nitrogen removal are promising.

Simultaneous reduction of antibiotics leakage and methane emission from constructed wetland by integrating microbial fuel cell

In this study, a microbial fuel cell coupled with constructed wetland (CW-MFC) was built to demonstrate that integration of MFC can enhance antibiotics (sulfadiazine (SDZ) and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) removal in CWs and control CH₄ emissions. Better COD and antibiotics removal performance was obtained in CW-MFC. Notably, both reactors can remove more than 90.00% of CIP. A decline in methane fluxes (by 15.29%) was also observed in CW-MFC compared with CW. The presence of Acorus tatarinowii had no obvious effect on antibiotics removal but the application of manganese ore substrate reduced methane emissions. Further study showed that Proteobacteria was enriched on the Mn substrate anode and the relative abundance of Methanothrix was declined. The results suggested that suppression of methanogenesis may be contributed to a low methane flux in CW-MFC. This study will facilitate the application of CW-MFC to treat antibiotics wastewater and control the ecological risks of greenhouse gas emissions.

Constructed Wetlands in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review of Experiences during the Last Decade

The review aims to report the state-of-the-art constructed wetlands (CW) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region not limited to national and local conditions. The aim is with a broader view, to bring updated and sufficient information, to facilitate the use of the CW technology in the different countries of LAC. Thus, 520 experiences extracted from the 169 reviewed documents in 20 countries were analyzed. According to the data, horizontal subsurface flow wetlands are the most reported CW in the region (62%), the second most common CW technology in the region is free water surface CW (17%), then vertical flow systems (9%), followed by intensified constructed wetlands (8%), and finally French systems (4%). The performance for nutrient removal is analyzed, finding that the mean of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorous (TP) removal efficiencies varies from 65% to 83%, 55% to 72%, and 30% to 84%, respectively. The results suggest a generally good performance for COD and TN removal, but a low performance for TP removal. Regarding plant species used for CWs, 114 different plant species were reported, being until now the most extensive report about plant species used in CWs in the LAC region.

Effects of graphite and Mn ore media on electro-active bacteria enrichment and fate of antibiotic and corresponding resistance gene in up flow microbial fuel cell constructed wetland

This study assessed the influence of substrate type on pollutants removal, antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) fate and bacterial community evolution in up-flow microbial fuel cell constructed wetlands (UCW-MFC) with graphite and Mn ore electrode substrates. Better COD removal and higher bacterial community diversity and electricity generation performance were achieved in Mn ore constructed UCW-MFC (Mn). However, the lower concentration of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and the total abundances of ARGs were obtained in the effluent in the graphite constructed UCW-MFC (s), which may be related to higher graphite adsorption and filter capacity. Notably, both reactors can remove more than 97.8% of ciprofloxacin. In addition, significant negative correlations were observed between SDZ, COD concentration, ARG abundances and bacterial a-diversity indices. The LEfse analysis revealed significantly different bacterial communities due to the substrate differences in the two reactors, and Geobacter, a typical model electro-active bacteria (EAB), was greatly enriched on the anode of UCW-MFC (Mn). In contrast, the relative abundance of methanogens (Methanosaeta) was inhibited. PICRUSt analysis results further demonstrated that the abundance of extracellular electron transfer related functional genes was increased, but the methanogen function genes and multiple antibiotic resistance genes in UCW-MFC (Mn) anode were reduced. Redundancy analyses indicated that substrate type, antibiotic accumulation and bacterial community were the main factors affecting ARGs. Moreover, the potential ARG hosts and the co-occurrence of ARGs and intI1 were revealed by network analysis.

Modeling dynamics of organic carbon and nitrogen removal during aeration interruption in aerated horizontal flow treatment wetlands

Despite recent developments in process-based modeling of treatment wetlands (TW), the dynamic response of horizontal flow (HF) aerated wetlands to interruptions of aeration has not yet been modeled. In this study, the dynamic response of organic carbon and nitrogen removal to interruptions of aeration in an HF aerated wetland was investigated using a recently-developed numerical process-based model. Model calibration and validation were achieved using previously obtained data from pilot-scale experiments. Setting initial concentrations for anaerobic bacteria to high values (≈ 35-70 mg L^-1) and including ammonia sorption was important to simulate the treatment performance of the experimental wetland in transition phases when aeration was switched off and on again. Even though steady-state air flow rate impacted steady-state soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD_s), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄-N) and oxidized nitrogen (NO_x-N) concentration length profiles, it did not substantially affect corresponding effluent concentrations during aeration interruption. When comparing simulated with experimental results, it is most likely that extending the model to include mass transfer through the biofilm will allow to better explain the underlying experiments and to increase simulation accuracy. This study provides insights into the dynamic behavior of HF aerated wetlands and discusses assumptions and limitations of the modeling approach.

Evaluation of phytotoxicity of effluents from activated sludge and constructed wetland system for wastewater reuse

The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxicity of wastewater treated with horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetlands (CWs) and activated sludge (AS) system using disinfection treatment such chlorination and ultraviolet (UV) system. To assess the impact of the reuse of different effluents (HSSF-Cl, HSSF-UV, AS-Cl and AS-UV), bioassays using seeds of Raphanus sativus (R. sativus) and Triticum aestivum (T. aestivum), were performed on both Petri dishes and soil. Different treated wastewater concentrations were varied (6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100%) and the percentage of germination inhibition (PGI), percentage of epicotyl elongation (PEE) and germination index (GI) were determined. Positive effects (PGI and PEE <0% and GI >80%) of HSSF-Cl, HSSF-UV, AS-Cl and AS-UV effluents on germination and epicotyl elongation of R. sativus and T. aestivum were observed in Petri dishes bioassays. However, toxic effects of HSSF-Cl, HSSF-UV and AS-Cl on seeds germination and epicotyl elongation of both plant species were detected in soil samples (PGI and PEE >0% and GI <80%). Only R. sativus seeds to be irrigated with AS-UV achieved GI values above 86% for all concentrations evaluated. These results indicated that AS-UV effluent had a positive effect on seeds germination and can be recommended for treated wastewater reuse in agricultural irrigation.
