Faceted TiO2 photocatalytic degradation of anthraquinone in aquatic solution under solar irradiation

A systematic review of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution: A combined bibliometric and mechanistic analysis of research trend toward an environmentally friendly solution

Pollution caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a significant concern. This concern has become more problematic given the rapid modification of PAHs in the environment during co-contamination to form substituted PAHs. This review aims to integrate bibliometric analysis with a rigorous study of mechanistic insights, resulting in a more comprehensive knowledge of evolving research trends on PAH remediation. The results show that research in this field has progressed over the years and peaked in 2022, potentially due to the redirection of resources toward emerging pollutants, hinting at the dynamic nature of environmental research priorities. During this year, 158,147 documents were published, representing 7 % of the total publications in the field between 2000 and 2023. The different remediation methods used for PAH remediation were identified and compared. Bioremediation, having >90 % removal efficiency, has been revealed to be the best technique because it is cost-effective and easy to operate at large scale in situ and ex-situ. The current challenges in PAH remediation have been detailed and discussed. Implementing innovative and sustainable technologies that target pollutant removal and valuable compound recovery is necessary to build a more robust future for water management.

Mechanism of norfloxacin transformation by horseradish peroxidase and various redox mediated by humic acid and microplastics

The catalysis of HRP coupling with redox mediator was a feasible technology for the transformation of antibiotics. This work screened three effective redox mediators syringaldehyde (SYR), acetosyringone (AS) and p-coumaric acid (PCA) for the norfloxacin (NOR) transformation in HRP/redox mediator system. Then, compared their transformation characteristics under varying conditions. The molecular docking results indicated HRP catalytic mediator was spontaneous, and the absolute value order of free energy between three redox mediators and HRP was consistent with the order of NOR removal in experiment. The presence of humic acid (HA) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics could block the removal of NOR, and the inhibition effect was proportional to the level of HA and PS particles. Seven and six possible intermediate products were identified by using SYR/AS and PCA as redox mediators, respectively, and potential NOR transformation pathways were proposed. SYR and AS treatment had the same transformation products and pathways due to their similar structure, including defluorination, oxidation, cross-coupled with mediator, demethylation and dehydrogenation. While for the PCA group, NOR not only performed the above action (except defluorination), but also underwent decarbonylation. These findings may expand our knowledge of the conversion and fate of fluoroquinolones through HRP coupled with redox mediator in the environment.

Advanced oxidation processes for the removal of mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - A review

Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) are toxic environmental contaminants presented in most of the environmental matrices. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of AHs in the account of complete mineralization from various environmental matrices have been reviewed in this paper. An in-depth discussion on various AOPs for mono (BTEX) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives is presented. Most of the AOPs were effective in the removal of AHs from the aquatic environment. A comparative study on the degradation of various AHs revealed that the oxidation of the AHs is strongly dependent on the number of aromatic rings and the functional groups attached to the ring. The formation of halogenated and nitrated derivatives of AHs in the real contaminated water containing chloride, nitrite, and nitrate ions seems to be a challenge in using the AOPs in real systems. The phenolic compounds, quinone, alcohols, and aliphatic acids are the important byproducts formed during the oxidation of AHs, initiated by the attack of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on their electron-rich center. In conclusion, AOPs are the adaptable method for the removal of AHs from different environmental matrices. The persulfate-based AOPs were applied in the soil phase removal as an in situ chemical oxidation of AHs. Moreover, the combination of AOPs will be a conclusive solution to avoid or minimize unexpected or other toxic intermediate products and to obtain rapid oxidation of AHs.

Highly efficient photodegradation of magnetic GO-Fe3O4@SiO2@CdS for phenanthrene and pyrene: Mechanism insight and application assessment

A novel magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS embedded graphene oxide (GO) composite was prepared for the visible-light-driven photodegradation of high ring number polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The potential application of GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS was evaluated through the photodegradation of phenanthrene and pyrene in deionized water, tap water, and lake water, respectively. It was found that GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS could remove 86.4 % of phenanthrene and 93.4 % of pyrene, suggesting its potential for the degradation of high-ring number PAHs. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that pyrene has more active sites attacked by free radicals. The photoelectrochemical measurement and quenching experiments indicate that GO can transfer photoelectrons efficiently, resulting in the crucial radicals (O₂^-, OH and ¹O₂). More importantly, the photocatalytic activity kept almost constant during five cycles, confirming the significant anti-photocorrosion of GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS. This work provides some new insights into the removal of PAHs with high-ring numbers in the natural water environment.

Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface water environment: Occurrence, ecotoxicity, and sources

Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) have been ubiquitously detected in atmospheric, soil, sediment, and water environments, some of which show higher concentrations and toxicities than the parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The occurrence, source, fate, risks and methods of analysis for OPAHs in the atmosphere, soil, and the whole environment (comprising the atmosphere, soil, water, and biota) have been reviewed, but reviews focusing on OPAHs in the water environment have been lacking. Due to the higher polarity and water solubility of OPAHs than PAHs, OPAHs exist preferentially in water environments. In this review, the occurrence, ecological toxicity and source of OPAHs in surface water environments are investigated in detail. Most OPAHs show higher concentrations than the corresponding PAHs in surface water environments. OPAHs pose non-ignorable ecological risks to surface water ecosystems. Wastewater treatment plant effluent, atmospheric deposition, surface runoff, photochemical and microbiological transformation, and sediment release are possible sources for OPAHs in surface water. This review will fill important knowledge gaps on the migration and transformation of typical OPAHs in multiple media and their environmental impact on surface water environments. Further studies on OPAHs in the surface environment, including their ecotoxicity with the co-existing PAHs and mass flows of OPAHs from atmospheric deposition, surface runoff, transformation from PAHs, and sediment release, are also encouraged.

Transformation of sulfadiazine in humic acid and polystyrene microplastics solution by horseradish peroxidase coupled with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole

Enzyme catalyzed coupling with redox mediators are considered as great interesting and viable technologies to transform antibiotics. This work demonstrated the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was effective in transforming sulfadiazine (SDZ) transformation coupled with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) at varying conditions. The removal of SDZ was independent of Na⁺ and its ionic strength, but Ca²⁺ could enhance transformation efficiency by increasing the enzyme activity of HRP. The presence of humic acid (HA) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics showed inhibition on the transformation of SDZ, and the transformation rate constants (k) decreased with the concentration of HA and PS particles increased. These primarily attributed to covalent coupling and electrostatic interaction between SDZ and HA, SDZ and PS, respectively, which reduced the concentration of free SDZ in the reaction solution. The presence of cation recovered the inhibition of SDZ transformation by HA and PS particles, which ascribed to compete between cation and SDZ. The divalent cations (Ca²⁺) showed more substantial competitiveness than mono (Na⁺) due to more carried charge. Eight possible transformation products were identified, and potential SDZ transformation pathways were proposed, which include δ-cleavage, γ-cleavage, carbonylation, hydroxylation, SO₂ extrusion and SO₃ extrusion. In addition, HA and PS particles couldn't affect the transformation pathways of SDZ. These findings provide novel understandings of the transformation and the fate of antibiotics in the natural environment by HRP coupled with redox mediators.

Persistent Free Radicals from Low-Molecular-Weight Organic Compounds Enhance Cross-Coupling Reactions and Toxicity of Anthracene on Amorphous Silica Surfaces under Light

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination has raised great environmental concerns, while the effects of low-molecular-weight organic compounds (LMWOCs) on PAH photodegradation at amorphous silica (AS)/air interfaces have been largely ignored. In this study, the phototransformation of anthracene (ANT) at amorphous silica (AS)/air interfaces was investigated with the addition of LMWOCs. ANT removal was attributed to ^•OH attacking and the energy transfer process via ³ANT*. Light irradiation induced the fractured ≡SiO^• or ≡Si^• generation on AS surfaces, which could react with absorbed H₂O and O₂ to generate ^•OH and further yield a series of hydroxylated products of ANT. The presence of citric acid and oxalic acid improved ^•OH generation and enhanced ANT removal by 1.0- and 2.2-fold, respectively. For comparison, the presence of catechol and hydroquinone significantly decreased ANT removal and produced coupling products. The results of density functional theory calculations suggest that persistent free radicals (PFRs) on AS surfaces from catechol or hydroquinone after ^•OH attacking prefer to cross-couple with ANT via C-C bonding rather than self-couple. Dianthrone and cross-coupling products might possess higher ecotoxicity, while hydroxylated products were less ecotoxic than their parent compounds based on Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) estimation. The results of this study revealed the potential ecotoxicity of PAH-adsorbed particulates coexisting with LMWOCs and also provided a new insight into PAH transformation through PFR pathways.

Recent Achievements and Future Challenges in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

The article presents the investigation results of the formation and synthesis of nanosized materials which were obtained at the Institute of Combustion Problems, many works have been brought to practical use. Investigations of low-temperature soot formation become the basis of nanomaterial synthesis methods, developed at the Institute for Combustion Problems since 1985. Flame can be considered as a chemical reactor to produce target products. The main feature of the processes based on technological combustion is that the target product is formed as a result of the combustion reaction, occurring spontaneously at high temperatures with a high speed without consuming external energy, i.e. due to its own heat. With the development of nanotechnology, new challenges have emerged in the synthesis of nanomaterials under combustion synthesis conditions. Below is a list of works on nanomaterials synthesis carried out at the Institute: complete scheme of soot formation; energy intensive nanocarbon materials; development and study of perovskite photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution; obtaining carbon fibers by the method of electrospinning; obtaining of biologically soluble membranes based on polymeric nanofibres and hydroxyapatite of calcium; synthesis of nanocarbon sorbents for purification of water from heavy metal ions.
