The response of water flow, suspended sediment yield and erosion intensity to contemporary long-term changes in climate and land use/cover in river basins of the Middle Volga Region, European Russia

6-Benzyladenine alleviates NaCl stress in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seedlings by improving photosynthesis and upregulating antioxidant defences

Soil salinity is a growing problem in agriculture, plant growth regulators (PGRs) can regulate plant response to stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exogenous 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) on photosynthetic capacity and antioxidant defences in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) seedlings under NaCl stress. Two watermelon genotypes were subjected to four different treatments: (1) normal water (control); (2) 20mgL-1 6-BA; (3) 120mmolL-1 NaCl; and (4) 120mmolL-1 NaCl+20mgL-1 6-BA. Our results showed that NaCl stress inhibited the growth of watermelon seedlings, decreased their photosynthetic capacity, promoted membrane lipid peroxidation, and lowered the activity of protective enzymes. Additionally the salt-tolerant Charleston Gray variety fared better than the salt-sensitive Zhengzi NO.017 variety under NaCl stress. Foliar spraying of 6-BA under NaCl stress significantly increased biomass accumulation, as well as photosynthetic pigment, soluble sugar, and protein content, while decreasing malondialdehyde levels, H2 O2 content, and electrolyte leakage. Moreover, 6-BA enhanced photosynthetic parameters, including net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and transpiration rate; activated antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase; and improved the efficiency of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle by stimulating glutathione reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase, as well as ascorbic acid and glutathione content. Principal component analysis confirmed that 6-BA improved salt tolerance of the two watermelon varieties, particularly Zhengzi NO.017, albeit through two different regulatory mechanisms. In conclusion, 6-BA treatment could alleviate NaCl stress-induced damage and improve salt tolerance of watermelons by regulating photosynthesis and osmoregulation, activating the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and promoting antioxidant defences.

Land-Use/-Cover Changes and Their Effect on Soil Erosion and River Suspended Sediment Load in Different Landscape Zones of European Russia during 1970–2017

Contemporary trends in cultivated land and their influence on soil/gully erosion and river suspended sediment load were analyzed by various landscape zones within the most populated and agriculturally developed part of European Russia, covering 2,222,390 km2. Based on official statistics from the Russian Federation and the former Soviet Union, this study showed that after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, there was a steady downward trend in cultivated land throughout the study region. From 1970–1987 to 2005–2017, the region lost about 39% of its croplands. Moreover, the most significant relative reduction in cultivated land was noted in the forest zone (south taiga, mixed and broadleaf forests) and the dry steppes and the semi-desert of the Caspian Lowland—about 53% and 65%, respectively. These territories are with climatically risky agriculture and less fertile soils. There was also a widespread reduction in agricultural machinery on croplands and livestock on pastures of the region. A decrease in soil/gully erosion rates over the past decades was also revealed based on state hydrological monitoring data on river suspended sediment load as one of the indicators of the temporal variability of erosion intensity in river basins and the published results of some field research in various parts of the studied landscape zones. The most significant reduction in the intensity of erosion and the load of river suspended sediment was found in European Russia’s forest-steppe zone. This was presumably due to a favorable combination of the above changes in land cover/use and climate change.

Contemporary Long-Term Trends in Water Discharge, Suspended Sediment Load, and Erosion Intensity in River Basins of the North Caucasus Region, SW Russia

For the first time, contemporary trends in water discharge, suspended sediment load, and the intensity of overall erosion in the river basins of the North Caucasus region, as one of Russia’s most agriculturally developed geographic areas, were identified. The study was carried out using monitoring data of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of the country for 21 rivers by comparing two periods: 1963–1980 and 2008–2017. According to the study’s results, trends of an increase in the mean annual water discharge (by 2–97%) and the essential reduction in its intra-annual variability have been found in most of the studied rivers. On the contrary, the trends of reduction in annual suspended sediment load and the intensity of erosion in the river basins were identified in most of the study region. Their most essential and statistically significant decreases (by 47–94%) were recorded within the Stavropol Upland, which several decades ago was considered one of the most erosion-dangerous territories of the entire country, as well as in some river basins of the central part of the Greater Caucasus’s northern slope (by 17–94%). The changes in climate (reducing the depth of soil freezing and meltwater runoff on the soil) and land use/cover (reduction of acreage and load (pressure) of agricultural machinery on the soil, reducing livestock on pastures, and the transfer of water from the neighboring, more full-flowing rivers) are considered the leading causes of the aforementioned trends. The findings will contribute to solving some economic and environmental problems of both the region and adjacent territories and water areas.

An Innovative Approach for Improving the Accuracy of Digital Elevation Models for Cultivated Land

The redistribution of solar radiation, temperature, soil moisture and heat by topography affects the physical and chemical properties of the soil and the spatial distribution characteristics of crop growth. Analyses of the relationship between topography and these variables may help to improve the accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs). The purpose of correcting Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data is to obtain high-precision DEM data in cultivated land. A typical black soil area was studied. A high-precision reference DEM was generated from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and extensive measured ground elevation data. The normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), perpendicular drought index (PDI) extracted from SPOT-6 remote sensing images and potential solar radiation (PSR) extracted from SRTM. The interactions between topography and NDVI, PDI, and PSR were analyzed. The NDVI, PDI and PSR in June, July, August and September of 2016 and the SRTM were used as independent variables, and the UAV DEM was used as the dependent variable. Linear stepwise regression (LSR) and a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) were used to establish an elevation prediction model. The results indicated that (1) The correlation between topography and NDVI, PSR, PDI was significant at 0.01 level. The PDI and PSR improved the spatial resolution of SRTM data and reduce the vertical error. (2) The BPNN (R21 = 0.98, root mean square error, RMSE1 = 0.54) yielded a higher SRTM accuracy than did the studied linear model (RMSE1 = 1.00, R21 = 0.90). (3) A series of significant improvements in the SRTM were observed when assessed with the reference DEMs for two different areas, with RMSE reductions of 91% (from 14.95 m to 1.23 m) and 93% (from 15.6 m to 0.94 m). The proposed method improved the accuracy of existing DEMs and could provide support for accurate farmland management.
