Wintertime hygroscopic growth factors (HGFs) of accumulation mode particles and their linkage to chemical composition in a heavily polluted urban atmosphere of Kanpur at the Centre of IGP, India: Impact of ambient relative humidity

Seasonal variability in size-resolved hygroscopicity of sub-micron aerosols over the Western Ghats, India: Closure and parameterization

Hygroscopicity of atmospheric aerosol primarily depends on the size and chemical composition of the particle and is important for estimating anthropogenic aerosol radiative forcing. There is limited information exists over the Indian region on size segregated aerosol hygroscopicity (κ) in different seasons. This study presents 'κ' as derived from a Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (HTDMA) over a High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in the Western Ghats, India for more than a year (from May 2019 to May 2020). The average hygroscopicity values of aerosol particles of diameters 32, 50, 75, 110, 150, 210 and 260 nm at 90 % RH condition are 0.19, 0.18, 0.16, 0.17, 0.18, 0.20, 0.21 respectively during the entire observation period. κ was observed to decrease with an increase in size in the Aitken mode regime (32-75 nm) and an increase in the accumulation mode (110-260 nm). Seasonal variation of hygroscopicity for a wide range of particle diameters is reported which is highly demanding as there is a change in the air mass flow pattern in each of the seasons. The diurnal cycle of hygroscopicity showed a prominent peak during the midnight to early morning hours followed by a decrease in the forenoon hours and a secondary peak in the afternoon hours. κ is found to be higher in pre-monsoon compared to winter season as Chl is approximately 3 % higher in pre-monsoon and NH₄Cl is highly hygroscopic among the assumed chemical composition. Hygroscopicity derived through chemical speciation observations assuming internal and external mixing of aerosols i.e. κ_inter and κ_exter are overestimating as compared to κ_HTDMA. However, the bias between k_exter and k_HTDMA is relatively lower as external mixing type of aerosol is evident through the growth factor data sets measured by HTDMA. Utilizing the hygroscopicity measurements available for discrete diameters by HTDMA, a parameterization of hygroscopicity with the dry diameter of sub-micron particles is developed.

Atmospheric chemistry and cancer risk assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs over a semi-arid site in the Indo-Gangetic plain

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs were collected over a year at a traffic dominated site in Agra, to determine the dominant partitioning mechanism. During the entire sampling period, total PAHs and Nitro-PAHs were 3465 ± 3802 and 26.1 ± 25.9 ng m^-3 respectively. The gas-particle partitioning behavior of PAHs was studied by applying the Pankow model, Absorption model, and Dual model. Amongst all the partitioning models, the Dual model fits well and indicates that the partitioning of PAHs at the traffic site in Agra depends on both the physical adsorption of PAHs on the Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) surface and absorption of PAHs into the organic layer present on the TSP surface. Pankow model indicates that PAHs are emitted from the source close to the sampling point and due to this PAHs do not get enough time to get partitioned in between both the phases. Incremental lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) shows that adults and children are more prone to cancer risk in comparison to infants for both PAHs and Nitro-PAHs. Cancer risk by inhalation was minimum in comparison to both ingestion and dermal exposure. Nitro-PAHs in the particulate phase were high enough to exceed the minimum permissible limit (10^-6) of causing cancer by ingestion and dermal exposure.

Assessment of PM2.5 using satellite lidar observations: Effect of bio-mass burning emissions over India

The present study estimates the particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) over the Indian sub-continent using near-surface retrieval of aerosol extinction coefficient (2007-2021) of Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) onboard Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite. Climatology of wintertime PM_2.5 during the last 15 years shows the highest concentration over the middle Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) and northwest India with a 3 to 4 fold increase in magnitude compared to the peninsular India. Surface-level PM_2.5 mass concentration during winter (December to February) shows statistically significant positive trends over the Indian subcontinent. It increases at a rate of ~3% over the IGP and arid regions of northwest India, and ~4% over peninsular India during the last fifteen years (2006-2020). Interannual variability of average near-surface PM_2.5 concentration over the Indian sub-continent during the fog occurring season (December to February) shows a statistically significant correlation with the post-harvest agro-residue burning over the western IGP (Punjab and Haryana) during November. The wintertime near-surface PM_2.5 concentration shows a higher correlation with anthropogenic agro-residue burning activity compared to meteorological parameters. The influence of agro-residue burning during November over northern India extends up to peninsular India and might contribute to continental pollution outflow and associated aerosol plumes persisting over the Northern Indian Ocean during the winter season. Sustainable energy recovery solutions to the agro-residue burning need to be implemented to effectively reduce the far-reaching implications of the post-monsoon burning activity over the western IGP.

Atmospheric rivers fueling the intensification of fog and haze over Indo-Gangetic Plains

Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) experiences persistent and widespread rise of fog and haze during the winter season. This has been attributed to the rise in pollution levels and water vapor, but the reason for enhancement in latter is not clear yet. We detect moisture incursion from Arabian Sea, a phenomenon called atmospheric rivers (AR), land-falling intermittently along 12-25° N corridor of the west-coast of India during winter; using satellite and reanalysis data. The total vertically integrated horizontal water vapor transport in AR-landfalls ranging from 0.7 × 10⁸ to 2.2 × 10⁸ kg/s; nearly five-orders of magnitude larger than the average discharge of liquid water from Indus River into Arabian Sea. These AR events are playing prominent role in enhancing water vapor over IGP region by 19 ± 5%; in turn fueling the intensification of fog and haze through aerosol-water vapor interaction. We found that AR events enhanced aerosol optical depths over IGP by about 29 ± 13%. The progression of moist-laden winds in ARs onto Himalayan Mountains contributes to the precipitation that explains the observed rise in the extreme flow of western Himalayan Rivers in winter. We conclude that these ARs likely contribute to the decline of snow albedo as pollution-mixed-ARs encounter Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayan mountain region.
