Tradeoffs between agricultural production and ecosystem services: A case study in Zhangye, Northwest China

Study on trade-offs and synergies of rural ecosystem services in the Tacheng-Emin Basin, Xinjiang, China: Implications for zoning management of rural ecological functions

Rural areas are the main source of ecosystem services in arid and semi-arid areas, and ecosystem services are the background conditions for rural revitalization. In this study, the spatial pattern of key ecosystem services in the countryside was assessed, and the trade-offs and synergistic relationships among ecosystem services were investigated, using the Tacheng-Emin Basin in China as the study area. Finally, the types of ecological function zoning and development strategies for the countryside are proposed. The results showed that: (1) the area of ecological land was large, and the average land use intensity was 2.48, which belonged to the medium intensity. (2) The mean values of the six ecosystem services are all in the middle and lower classes, and the spatial distribution of the five ecosystem services is similar, except for food production. (3) Except for grain production, the other five ecosystem services showed positive feedback to elevation. The other five ecosystem services are synergistic, and there are trade-offs between grain production and other ecosystem services. In the nonlinear interaction mechanism of ecosystem services, the fluctuation constraint occupies the largest proportion. (4) At smaller spatial scales, there are more types of ecosystem service clusters. Combining the results of the study, the villages in the study area can be categorized into five types. This study formulates five priority levels of rural ecological revitalization and proposes different development recommendations for the sustainable development of each type of village. This study is helpful for the fine management of land resources and the revitalization of rural ecology and provides a reference for the sustainable development of ecosystem services in arid and semi-arid areas.

Distinct planting patterns exert legacy effects on the networks and assembly of root-associated microbiomes in subsequent crops

Soil legacy effects from previous crops can significantly influence plant-soil interactions in crop rotations. However, the microbial mechanism underlying this effect in subsequent root-associated compartments remains unclear. We investigated the effects of planting patterns (four-year continuous maize [MM], three-year winter wheat and one-year maize rotation [WM], and three-year potato and one-year maize rotation [PM]) on the microbial composition and structure of root-associated compartments, the effect of distinct crops on subsequent microbial co-occurrence patterns, and the assembly mechanism by which the root-associated compartments (bulk soil, rhizosphere, and roots) in subsequent crops regulate the microbiome habitat. Compared with MM, the relative abundance of Acidobacteria in WM was 29.7 % lower, whereas that of Bacteroidota in PM was 37.9 % higher in all three compartments. The co-occurrence patterns of the microbial communities exhibited varied responses to different planting patterns. Indicator taxon analysis revealed less shared and specific species in the root bacterial and fungal networks. The planting pattern elicited specific responses from modules within bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks in all three compartments. Moreover, the planting patterns and root-associated compartments collectively drove the assembly process of root-associated microorganisms. The neutral model showed that, compared with MM, the stochasticity of bacterial assembly decreased under WM and PM but increased for fungal assembly. WM and PM increased the relative effects of the homogenized dispersal of fungal assemblies in roots. We conclude that previous crops exhibit marked legacy effects in the root-associated microbiome. Therefore, soil heritage should not be ignored when discussing microbiome recruitment strategies and co-occurrence patterns in subsequent crops.

Preference, perceived change, and professed relationship among ecosystem services in the Himalayas

The demand side of ecosystem service (ES), especially preference and perception of supply and interactions among ES, is an important yet underexplored research area for landscape planning and management in human-dominated landscapes. Taking a case of multifunctional landscape in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region, we carried out a social survey of ES, focusing on preference, perceived change, and observed relationship among six major ES from the local people's perspective. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, data collection was done from 300 households from 10 categories of human settlements, based on watershed and land cover types. Garrett mean score (GMS), ordinal logistic regression estimates, and Chi-square test were performed for quantitative data, while an inductive approach was adopted for qualitative data analysis. The results show that at the landscape level, local people preferred water yield (GMS = 70) and crop production (GMS = 66) as the most preferred ES, whereas habitat quality (GMS = 37) and carbon sequestration (GMS = 35) were among the least preferred ES. More than 70% of the respondents believed that the supply of crop production has decreased over the last two decades; however, the supply of other provisioning and non-provisioning ES has increased as observed by majority of the respondents. Among the 15 pairs of ES, local people believe that co-occurrence of ES is possible. Majority of the respondents said that there exist synergistic relationship among 13 pairs of ES, except crop production which is negatively related with timber production and carbon sequestration. Among the identified trade-offs in ES, majority of local people believed that direct trade-offs (i.e., linear inverse relationship) is dominant as observed in 8 pairs of ES, followed by concave and convex trade-offs. Based on our analysis, we argue that the preference and perceived change of ES is more dependent on spatial heterogeneity of communities (i.e., watershed type, municipal category, and land cover type of residence) than socio-economic determinants. Further, we have discussed and suggested few policy and management measures including place-based spatial assessment of the social demand and preference, embracing agroforestry practices in ecosystem management programs, mainstreaming non-local ES in local decision making by incentives, and optimizing the supply of desired ES though integrated biophysical and socio-economic assessment of the landscape.

Temporal variation of heavy metals in sewage sludge in typical cities in Gansu Province, northwest China

To investigate the temporal behaviors of heavy metals in sewage sludge in typical cities of industrial, industrial-agricultural, agricultural, or energy focused. Samples were collected every 10 days for a period of 1 year in four types of cities of Lanzhou, Tianshui, Qingyang, and Zhangye. The average annual values for all four cities were Cd (1.59-3.16 mg/kg), Pb (41.9-55.1 mg/kg), Cr (63.8-92.0 mg/kg), Cu (75.7-92.6 mg/kg), Zn (498-612 mg/kg), and Ni (3.66-4.25 mg/kg). The highest values were observed in June for Cd, Cr, and Zn, at Lanzhou and Tianshui. At Qingyang and Zhangye, the Cd, Cr, and Zn contents were stable throughout the year. There was a similar monthly change among the four cities regarding the levels of Ni content, and it was far below the background value. The monthly fluctuations in Cd, Pb, Cr, and Zn are mainly due to street dust effect. For cities with a developed industry, the impact of street dust during the first rains of the year on sewage sludge's heavy metal content must be highlighted as being of particular importance.

Evaluating the impacts of inter-basin water transfer projects on ecosystem services in the Fenhe River Basin using the SWAT model

Inter-basin water transfer (IBWT) projects have been widely constructed to alleviate the pressure on water resources in water shortage basins. However, the ecological effects of IBWT projects have often been ignored. Based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and a constructed total ecosystem services (TES) index, the impacts of IBWT projects on recipient basin ecosystem services were analyzed in this study. The results showed that the TES index was relatively stable from 2010 to 2020, but in the wet season it was 1.36 times that of the other months with high water yield and nutrient loads. Spatially, areas with high index values were mainly distributed in the sub-basins around the reservoirs. The IBWT projects had positive impacts on ecosystem services, and the TES index with IBWT projects was 5.98% higher than that without projects. Water yield and total nitrogen were the two most affected indexes, with increased of 5.65% and 5.41%, respectively, under the impacts of IBWT projects. Seasonally, the change rates of the TES index were less than 3% while the change rates of water yield and nitrogen load peaked at 8.23% and 53.42%, respectively, in March, owing to the large amount of water released from the reservoirs. Areas affected by the three evaluated IBWT projects accounted for 61%, 18%, and 11% of the watershed, respectively. Under the impact of each project, the TES index generally increased, whereas the impact decreased as the distance from the inflow location increased. Intense changes in ecosystem services occurred in sub-basin 23, the sub-basin closest to an IBWT project, with water yield, water flow, and local climate regulation increasing the largest.

Can human activities enhance the trade-off intensity of ecosystem services in arid inland river basins? Taking the Taolai River asin as an example

Driven by economic and social factors, more and more human beings intervene in nature to promote rapid economic and social development at the expense of ecosystem services (ES), which inevitably leads to the occurrence and even aggravation of ES trade-offs. Especially in the arid inland river basin is more serious. Therefore, this paper takes the Taolai River Basin as an example and uses the InVEST model to evaluate the spatial distribution of four typical ES, including carbon sequestration, oxygen release, windbreak and sand fixation, and water production, under the potential-actual states of the watershed. And use the Pearson correlation coefficient and the root mean square error (RMSE) to analyze the trade-off relationship between services from qualitative and quantitative aspects, respectively. Finally, the spatial matching types of trade-offs in the potential-actual states are discussed using Bivariate Local Indicators of Spatial Association, and the degree and scope of the impact of human activities on trade-offs are analyzed. The results show that the spatial distribution of the four ES has obvious heterogeneity in the potential-actual states, and the service volume of most services in the potential state is much higher than in the actual state. Secondly, there is a significant trade-offs relationship between Water production and Carbon sequestration and Oxygen release services under the potential state, while the actual state under the impact of human activities shows a significant synergistic relationship, which shows that human activities will not only increase the probability of trade-off will also increase the probability of synergy between ES. Finally, through the analysis of the meaning and causes of "high and low space dislocation" and "low and high space dislocation", it is shown that human activities will not only increase but also weaken the trade-off intensity of ES. The results of this study can provide a certain scientific basis for regional ecological environment planning and promote regional people to share ecological well-being.

Circuit theory-based ecological security pattern could promote ecological protection in the Heihe River Basin of China

Building ecological security patterns is essential to maintain regional ecological security and achieve sustainable development in the inland river basins with ecologically vulnerable environment. Numerous methods have been developed to build the ecological security pattern. However, to our knowledge, rare studies have quantified to what extent the derived pattern can improve ecological protection in the future. Taking Heihe River Basin (HRB), the second largest inland river basin in China, as the study area, we applied the circuit theory to build the ecological security pattern of HRB, and simulated how our built pattern contributed to ecological protection using the CLUMondo model. The results showed that the ecological security pattern of HRB contained 17 ecological sources, 35 key ecological corridors, and some ecological strategic points. The ecological sources were distributed in areas with better ecological conditions such as the Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve and Heihe National Wetland Park. The ecological corridors showed a pattern of "two horizontal and three vertical belts." Pinch points were mostly close to ecological sources or distributed on the corridors that played a key role in landscape connectivity, while barriers were mainly distributed on the corridors with large ecological resistance in the middle and lower reaches. The optimal ecological security pattern presented a "one screen, one belt, four districts and multiple centers" shape in HRB and could more effectively promote ecological protection compared to current development and protection scenarios. Our study provides a reliable decision-making guide for ecological protection and restoration of HRB, and can be extended to build ecological security patterns for broad-scale arid areas.

The Relationship between the Spatial and Temporal Evolution of Land Use Function and the Level of Economic and Social Development in the Yangtze River Delta

To explore the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of land use function and its correlation with social and economic development levels, taking the Yangtze River Delta region as an example, we quantified the multifunctional land use in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2000 to 2020 on a 5 km × 5 km grid and analyzed its spatiotemporal evolution characteristics. Each city's comprehensive measure of economic development used the projection tracing method. Person's method of interpretation was used for correlation between the spatial and temporal evolution of land use functions and the level of economic development and its coupling association. The study shows that: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the agricultural production function > ecological function > living function > non-agricultural production function in the Yangtze River Delta, but the non-agricultural production and living functions were gradually increasing, while the agricultural production and ecological functions were decreasing. In terms of spatial distribution, the agricultural production function decreases significantly around the built-up area due to the expansion of the built-up area. The non-agricultural production function strengthened around the central city in a network pattern and had a path-locking effect. Topography limits life functions, with high north and low south partially overlapping with non-agricultural production functions. Furthermore, the ecological function was high in the south and low in the north and continues to weaken due to the interference of human activities. (2) The spatiotemporal heterogeneity of different functions generated trade-offs/synergies. The trade-off relationship was prominent in agricultural production and non-farm production function and living function, and non-farm production and living function and ecological function during the study period. Conversely, agricultural production and ecological functions and non-farm production and subsistence functions were generally synergistic. Spatially, there was substantial spatial heterogeneity in the trade-off/synergy relationship between the two functions. (3) There was a clear correlation and spatial coupling between land use function indices and economic development levels in the whole region and sample zones. Still, the dynamic and regional nature of the evolution of land use functions results in sudden changes and jumps in different functions in space. Therefore, in the future integration of the Yangtze River Delta, it is necessary to pay comprehensive attention to the morphology of different land use functions and their synergy/trade-off relationship and to adjust the spatial governance strategy promptly according to the local conditions and the situation.

Carbon sinks and carbon emissions balance of land use transition in Xinjiang, China: differences and compensation

With the continuous enhancement of human activities, the contradiction between regional development and ecological protection is prominent in the ecologically fragile arid areas. It is of great significance for regional sustainable development to understand the ecological supply and demand problems caused by transformation of land using and formulate ecological compensation scheme scientifically. This study takes Xinjiang in China as the research area. It explores the land use transition characteristics and the changes in carbon supply and demand of Xinjiang using methods such as GIS spatial analysis and modified comparative ecological radiation forcing. Finally, the ecological compensation scheme is studied based on the theory of ecological radiation. The research shows that (I) in the study chronology, most of the areas produced only one change in land use. Land use is gradually developing towards the direction of ecological protection. After 2000, grassland recovered well, and 14,298 km² of other ecological land was transformed into grassland. (II) The change in the carbon sink of the Xinjiang ecosystem first decreased and then increased, and the ecological deficit area started to appear after 2010. The growth of grassland and cropland areas is essential to enhance the carbon sink capacity of arid zones. (III) The amount of ecological compensation in Xinjiang is 31.47 * 10⁸ yuan, and the proportion of the amount received by ecological compensation areas is related to the distance between the supply and demand areas, the amount of carbon sequestration, and the area of the region. This study provides a reference for achieving the healthy development of sustainable land use ecosystems in arid zones.

A spatialized assessment of ecosystem service relationships in a multifunctional agroforestry landscape of Senegal

Agroforestry systems are an integral part of Sub-Saharan agricultural landscapes. Studies conducted at tree or plot scales on the supply of ecosystem services (ES) suggest that agroforestry practices are a promising way to build multifunctional agricultural landscapes. However, the current characterization and understanding of how multiple ES are associated across such heterogeneous agricultural landscapes are still limited. This study provides the first characterization of the multiple ESs supplied by a Sahelian Faidherbia albida agroforestry parkland and their relationships. Relying on field data for 11 ES indicators, recent advances in remote sensing-derived information, and blending different ES mapping approaches, we first assessed the spatial heterogeneity of the supply of each ES. We found that the majority of ES indicators remained below ES potential values over the study area by 25 % to 50 %, revealing that there is a considerable scope for increasing the ES supply in the F. albida parkland. Then, using a scoring approach, we analyzed the supply of multiple ESs. We observed a large number of hotspots and a clear effect of the proximity of F. albida trees fostering the supply of multiple ESs in their vicinity. Finally, we mapped and analyzed the dominant relationships - trade-offs, synergies or losses - between ESs from a cooccurrence spatial approach. We showed that significant trade-offs and losses (58 % of the area) between ESs can exist in the F. albida parkland. Interestingly, we also showed that synergies occurred mainly up to 10 m from the F. albida trees, suggesting that synergies need to be increased beyond this threshold. By adopting an original ES valuation framework, we provided basic insights into ESs and their relationships. The different maps and information generated can support public debates and target new policies fostering the multifunctionality of F. albida parklands as well as in various other parklands of West Africa.

Data-driven evaluation of regional agricultural production efficiency for sustainable development

This study aims to improve regional agricultural production efficiency and promote sustainable agricultural development by presenting a data-driven evaluation method for regional agricultural production efficiency. Based on data collection and processing of regional agricultural input-output factors in Anhui Province, China, from 2014 to 2019, a data envelopment analysis Malmquist model is constructed for data modeling. Static analysis of regional agricultural production efficiency and production redundancy is conducted, and the dynamic change of regional agricultural production efficiency is measured. The results show that technical efficiency is the core driving factor for improving regional agricultural production efficiency. The findings indicate significant policy implications for improving agricultural production efficiency from the perspective of regional agricultural high-quality development. This study provides theoretical and methodological support for the sustainable development of regional agriculture.

Spatio-Temporal Change of Multiple Ecosystem Services and Their Driving Factors: A Case Study in Beijing, China

Driven by rapid urbanization, land use patterns have undergone dramatic changes, which have in turn influenced ecosystem services (ESs). The government has implemented ecological compensation and conservation actions to mitigate this negative impact, especially in metropolises. However, whether these measures will have the desired effect remains unclear. Therefore, understanding the spatio-temporal characteristics of ESs and their driving factors are crucial for regional development. In this study, we quantified carbon storage, water yield and soil conservation services based on land use maps. A Geographical Detector (GD) was used to analyze the driving mechanisms of ES changes in Beijing from 1985 to 2020. The results showed that (1) the obvious landscape pattern changes are urbanization, afforestation and cultivated land degradation in Beijing, (2) the three services showed an increasing trend overall, but the changes were different in each period, (3) in general, land use change is the main factor affecting ESs, and the urbanization and afforestation contributed the most. These results suggest that in highly urbanized metropolises, humans can still balance the demands of regional development and ESs reasonable planning. This study highlights the importance of afforestation for ESs, the necessity of harmonizing environmental concerns and human activities, and the need to conduct ecological management in Beijing to protect the ecological environment and coordinate regional development.

Effects of Afforestation Projects on Tradeoffs between Ecosystem Services: A Case Study of the Guanting Reservoir Basin, China

Evaluating the responses of ecosystem services (ESs) to local land-use changes is critical for understanding the effects of ecological projects related to land planning. Change patterns in the interrelationships between ESs delivered by land-use changes, which are helpful for formulating future strategies, have not been well studied. In this study, we quantified four ESs, namely water yield (WY), water and soil conservation, nonpoint pollution control, and carbon sequestration services, based on the soil and water assessment tool model (SWAT) in the Zhangjiakou section of the Guanting Reservoir watershed, a region with a high concentration of afforestation projects. The impacts of land-use changes on changes in ESs and interrelationships of ESs were investigated by redundancy analysis. The results showed that, along with afforestation, regional water conservation and soil organic carbon content increased by 3.22% and 1.08%, respectively, whereas sediment output, WY, phosphorus output, and nitrogen output decreased by 1.82%, 3.07%, 8.08%, and 12.51%, respectively. Significant tradeoffs of regional ESs were observed between WY and other ESs, while synergies existed between other ESs. Increased areas of evergreen and deciduous forests helped in conserving water, fixing carbon, and regulating runoff. Evergreen forests tended to conserve more water than deciduous forests. With the increase in grassland area, most of the ESs can be improved while introducing fewer tradeoffs compared with those of most of other land-use types. This study provided a better understanding of the effects of afforestation on ESs tradeoffs and benefits to develop better ecological conservation strategies in afforestation regions.

Quantitative Assessment for the Spatiotemporal Changes of Ecosystem Services, Tradeoff–Synergy Relationships and Drivers in the Semi-Arid Regions of China

Ecosystem services in arid inland regions are significantly affected by climate change and land use/land cover change associated with agricultural activity. However, the dynamics and relationships of ecosystem services affected by natural and anthropogenic drivers in inland regions are still less understood. In this study, the spatiotemporal patterns of ecosystem services in the Hexi Region were quantified based on multiple high-resolution datasets, the InVEST model and the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) model. In addition, the trade-offs and synergistic relationships among multiple ecosystem services were also explored by Pearson correlation analysis and bivariate spatial autocorrelation, and redundancy analysis (RDA) was also employed to determine the environmental drivers of these services and interactions. The results showed that most ecosystem services had a similar spatial distribution pattern with an increasing trend from northwest to southeast. Over the past 40 years, ecosystem services in the Hexi Region have improved significantly, with the water retention and soil retention increasing by 87.17 × 108 m3 and 287.84 × 108 t, respectively, and the sand fixation decreasing by 369.17 × 104 t. Among these ecosystem services, strong synergistic relationships were detected, while the trade-offs were found to be weak, and showed significant spatial heterogeneity in the Hexi Region. The spatial synergies and trade-offs in the Qilian Mountains were 1.02 and 1.37 times higher than those in the Hexi Corridor, respectively. Human activities were found to exacerbate the trade-offs between ecosystem services by increasing water consumption in the Hexi Corridor, with the exception of carbon storage. In particular, there were significant tradeoffs between food production and water retention, and between soil retention and habitat quality in the oases of the Hexi Corridor, which is affected by rapid population growth and cropland expansion. Additionally, precipitation, temperature and vegetation cover in the Qilian Mountains have increased significantly over the past four decades, and these increases significantly contributed to the enhancements in water retention, carbon storage, habitat quality, soil retention and food production. Nevertheless, the amount of sand fixation significantly decreased, and this was probably associated with the reduction in wind speed over the past four decades. Our results highlighted the importance of climate wetting and water resource management in the enhancement of ecosystem services and the mitigation of food production trade-offs for arid inland regions.

Identification of the trade-offs/synergies between rural landscape services in a spatially explicit way for sustainable rural development

Rural problems are becoming increasingly prominent in sustainable development in China. Landscape services (LSs) are an emerging concept associated with ecosystem services and play an important role in promoting sustainable development. However, a comprehensive framework of rural LS and empirical research are still lacking. Here, we proposed a rural LSs system based on its multiple functions of "ecological maintenance, agricultural production and human living", including 9 LS types. Combined with the impact of landscape pattern on LSs, we optimized the assessment method of LS, and the LS capabilities were assessed at the village scale in Hangzhou city. Furthermore, we identified the spatial differentiation of rural LSs capabilities and trade-offs/synergies along urban-rural and terrain gradients. The results showed that the LSs capabilities of the rural landscape were greatly affected by the urban radiation and terrain, and we found that the turning point of LSs capabilities was 35 km from the urban fringe and the terrain gradient T5. The LSs in most villages (77%) revealed trade-offs, and the villages with LS synergies largely occurred in the middle and eastern regions of the study area. This study could improve our current understanding of LSs in regard to sustainable rural development, and identifying the trade-offs/synergies of LSs in a spatially explicit way can provide suggestions for the differentiated management of rural landscape sustainability.

Scenario-Based Analysis of Land Use Competition and Sustainable Land Development in Zhangye of the Heihe River Basin, China

Rapid economic growth has a significant impact on land use change, which would threaten the natural ecology. Zhangye city of the Heihe River Basin, China is an ecologically vulnerable region where land use changes significantly due to socioeconomic development and population increases. The study employed a computable general equilibrium of land use change (CGELUC) model to simulate land use change and then used a dynamic land system (DLS) model to spatialize land use change during 2015-2030 under three development scenarios in Zhangye city. The three development scenarios are the baseline scenario (BAU), the resource consumption scenario (RCS) and the green development scenario (GDS). We found that economic growth would lead to land demand increases in high value-added industries and decreases in low value-added industries. The cultivated land would decrease while the built-up area would increase. By 2030, the cultivated land will decrease by 8.16%, 10.89% and 4.16%, respectively, under BAU, RCS and GDS, while the built-up area will increase by 8.61%, 10.39% and 4.75%, respectively. The expansion of built-up area under RCS presents spatial characteristics of centralized distribution, while spatial characteristics of uniform discrete distributions are presented under GDS. The expansion of ecological land under GDS would be considerable, especially in the north of Sunan County and Gaotai County, and around the natural reserve of Ganzhou County. This paper provides a scientific reference for coordinating economic development and ecological protection in the rapidly developing urbanized areas in western China.

Response of Biodiversity, Ecosystems, and Ecosystem Services to Climate Change in China: A Review

Climate change is having a significant impact on the global ecosystem and is likely to become increasingly important as this phenomenon intensifies. Numerous studies in climate change impacts on biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services in China have been published in recent decades. However, a comprehensive review of the topic is needed to provide an improved understanding of the history and driving mechanisms of environmental changes within the region. Here we review the evidence for changes in climate and the peer-reviewed literature that assesses climate change impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem, and ecosystem services at a China scale. Our main conclusions are as follows. (1) Most of the evidence shows that climate change (the increasing extreme events) is affecting the change of productivity, species interactions, and biological invasions, especially in the agro-pastoral transition zone and fragile ecological area in Northern China. (2) The individuals and populations respond to climate change through changes in behavior, functions, and geographic scope. (3) The impact of climate change on most types of services (provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural) in China is mainly negative and brings threats and challenges to human well-being and natural resource management, therefore, requiring costly societal adjustments. In general, although great progress has been made, the management strategies still need to be further improved. Integrating climate change into ecosystem services assessment and natural resource management is still a major challenge. Moving forward, it is necessary to evaluate and research the effectiveness of typical demonstration cases, which will contribute to better scientific management of natural resources in China and the world.

Study on the Comprehensive Improvement of Ecosystem Services in a China’s Bay City for Spatial Optimization

Ecosystem services are characterized by region and scale, and contribute to human welfare. Taking Yantai city, a typical bay city in China, as the example, its three representative ecosystem services: food supply (FS), carbon sequestration (CS) and water yield (WY) were chosen as study targets. Based on analyzation of six different aspects of the supply and variation characteristic of demand, this study tried to propose advices for comprehensive improvement of ecosystem services for spatial optimization. The results showed that: (1) ecosystem services supply was strong in central and southern areas of Yantai, while the northern coastal areas were relatively weak; (2) synergistic relationships were found of FS-CS, FS-WY and CS-WY both in 2009 and 2015, with the strongest one for FS-WY. Additionally, in the synergistic relationships, each pair of ecosystem services was dominated by one ecosystem service; (3) most of the three pairs of synergistic relationships had the tendency to strengthen with larger scales; (4) four ecosystem demands changing areas were observed and comprehensive improvement suggestions for them were proposed. This work provides a new attempt to improve ecosystem services based on its supply-demand relationship, which will give a baseline reference for related studies in Yantai city, as well as other similar bay cities.

Research on Urban and Rural Coordination Development and Its Driving Force Based on the Space-time Evolvement Taking Guangdong Province as an Example

Based on the background of the change in the urban–rural relationship in Guangdong Province, this paper constructs an analysis framework of urban and rural coordination development. Using the data of 19 administrative units above prefecture level in Guangdong Province, this paper studies the space–time evolution of urban and rural coordination development during 2000–2015 through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) and explores the influencing factors and driving forces behind it. It is found that there is club convergence in the urban and rural coordination development in Guangdong Province. This kind of convergence is reflected in the findings that the east bank of the Pearl River estuary is the best area for the urban and rural coordination development where Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen is the core and the level of urban and rural coordination development in the east, west and north of Guangdong Province is relatively low, which also reflects a geographical polarization feature. Based on the analysis of the factors that promote the urban and rural coordination development in the main years of 2000–2015, it can be concluded that location, economic development and urbanization level are the most important driving forces, followed by industrial structure. This research can be used as a decision-making reference for urban and rural coordination development and new countryside construction in China in the New Era.
