Long-term assessment of nano and bulk copper compound exposure in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum)

CuO nanoparticles' effect on the photosynthetic performance in seed tissues of Inga laurina (Fabaceae)

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) have been produced on a large scale because they can be applied across various fields, especially in nano-enabled healthcare and agricultural products. However, the increasing use of CuONPs leads to their release and accumulation into the environment. The CuONPs uptaken by seeds and their implications on germination behavior have been reported, but little is known or understood about their impact on photosynthesis in seed tissues. To fill knowledge gaps, this study evaluated the effects of CuONP concentrations (0-300 mg L-1) on the photosynthetic activity of Inga laurina seeds. The microscopy data showed that CuONPs had an average size distribution of 57.5 ± 0.7 nm. Copper ion release and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by CuONPs were also evaluated by dialysis and spectroscopy experiments, respectively. CuONPs were not able to intrinsically generate ROS and released a low content of Cu2⁺ ions (4.5%, w/w). Time evolution of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy were used to monitor the seeds subjected to nanoparticles during 168 h. The data demonstrate that CuONPs affected the steady-state maximum chlorophyll fluorescence (F m ' ), the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F v / F m ), and non-photochemical quenching ( NPQ ) of Inga laurina seeds over time. Besides, the NPQ significantly increased at the seed development stage, near the root protrusion stage, probably due to energy dissipation at this germination step. Additionally, the results indicated that CuONPs can change the oscillatory rhythms of energy dissipation of the seeds, disturbing the circadian clock. In conclusion, the results indicate that CuONPs can affect the photosynthetic behavior of I. laurina seeds. These findings open opportunities for using chlorophyll fluorescence as a non-destructive tool to evaluate nanoparticle impact on photosynthetic activity in seed tissues.

Recent advances on environmental behavior of Cu-based nanomaterials in soil-plant system: A review

In recent years, copper-based nanomaterials (Cu-based NMs) have shown great potential in promoting agriculture development due to their special physicochemical characteristics. With the mass production and overuse of Cu-based NMs, there are potential effects on the soil-plant environment. Soil organisms, especially soil microorganisms, play a significant part in terrestrial or soil ecosystems; plants, as indirect organisms with soil-related Cu-based NMs, may affect human health through plant agricultural products. Understanding the accumulation and transformation of Cu-based NMs in soil-plant systems, as well as their ecotoxicological effects and potential mechanisms, is a prerequisite for the scientific assessment of environmental risks and safe application. Therefore, based on the current literature, this review: (i) introduces the accumulation and transformation behaviors of Cu-based NMs in soil and plant systems; (ii) focuses on the ecotoxicological effects of Cu-based NMs on a variety of organisms (microorganisms, invertebrates, and plants); (iii) reveals their corresponding toxicity mechanisms. It appears from studies hitherto made that both Cu-based NMs and released Cu2+ may be the main reasons for toxicity. When Cu-based NMs enter the soil-plant environment, their intrinsic physicochemical properties, along with various environmental factors, could also affect their transport, transformation, and biotoxicity. Therefore, we should push for intensifying the multi-approach research that focuses on the behaviors of Cu-based NMs in terrestrial exposure environments, and mitigates their toxicity to ensure the promotion of Cu-based NMs.

Joint effects of CuO nanoparticles and perfluorooctanoic acid on cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.)

Coexisting nanoparticles (NPs) may change plant accumulation and toxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in soil, but research is very scarce. In this study, cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) was exposed to single or combined treatments of PFOA (2 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg) and copper oxide NPs (nCuO, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) for 40 days. At harvest, biomass, photosynthesis index, and nutrient composition of cabbage, as well as plant accumulation of PFOA and Cu, were measured. Results showed that nCuO and PFOA were adverse to cabbage growth by decreasing chlorophyll contents, inhibiting photosynthesis and transpiration, and interfering with the utilization of nutrient components. Besides, they also affected each other's plant utilization and transmission. Especially, nCuO at a high dose (400 mg/kg) significantly increased the transport of coexisting PFOA (4 mg/kg) content (by 124.9% and 118.2%) to cabbage shoots. The interaction mechanism between nCuO and PFOA is unknown, and more research is needed to evaluate their composite phytotoxicity.

Effect of methods application of copper nanoparticles in the growth of avocado plants

The aim of this greenhouse study was to evaluate root irrigation, foliar spray, and stem injection in order to find the best method for the nanofertilization of avocado plants with green synthesized CuNPs. One-year-old avocado plants were supplied four times (every 15 days) with 0.25 and 0.50 mg/ml of CuNPs through the three fertilization methods. Stem growth and new leaf formation were evaluated over time and after 60 days of CuNPs exposure, several plant traits (root growth, fresh and dry biomass, plant water content, cytotoxicity, photosynthetic pigments, and total Cu accumulation in plant tissues) were evaluated for CuNPs improvement. Regarding the control treatment, stem growth and new leaf appearance were increased by 25 % and 85 %, respectively, by the CuNPs supply methods of foliar spray>stem injection>root irrigation, with little significant differences among NPs concentrations. Avocado plants supplied with 0.25 and 0.50 mg/ml CuNPs maintained a hydric balance and cell viability ranged from 91 to 96 % through the three NPs application methods. TEM did not reveal any ultrastructural organelle changes induced by CuNPs in leaf tissues. The concentrations of CuNPs tested were not high enough to exert deleterious effects on the photosynthetic machinery of avocado plants, but photosynthetic efficiency was also found to be improved. The foliar spray method showed improved uptake and translocation of CuNPs, with almost no loss of Cu. In general, the improvement in plant traits indicated that the foliar spray method was the best for nanofertilization of avocado plants with CuNPs.

One-step synthesis of triethanolamine-capped Pt nanoparticle for colorimetric and electrochemiluminescent immunoassay of SARS-CoV spike proteins

Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) have been attracted worldwide attention due to their versatile application potentials, especially in the catalyst and sensing fields. Herein, a facile synthetic method of triethanolamine (TEOA)-capped PtNPs (TEOA@PtNP) for electrochemiluminescent (ECL) and colorimetric immunoassay of SARS-CoV spike proteins (SARS-CoV S-protein, a target detection model) is developed. Monodisperse PtNPs with an average diameter of 2.2 nm are prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method using TEOA as a green reductant and stabilizer. TEOA@PtNPs can be used as a nanocarrier to combine with antigen by the high-affinity antibody, which leads to a remarkable inhibition of electron transfer efficiency and mass transfer processes. On the basis of its peroxidase-like activity and easy-biolabeling property, the TEOA@PtNP can be used to establish a colorimetric immunosensor of SARS-CoV S-protein thought catalyzing the reaction of H2O2 and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Especially, the Ru(bpy)3 2+ ECL reaction is well-achieved with the TEOA@PtNPs due to their great conductivity and loading abundant TEOA co-reactants, resulting in an enhancing ECL signal in immunoassay of SARS-CoV S-protein. As a consequence, two proposed methods could achieve sensitive detection of SARS-CoV S-protein in wide ranges, the colorimetric and ECL detection limits were as low as 8.9 fg /mL and 4.2 fg /mL (S/N = 3), respectively. We believe that the proposed colorimetric and ECL immunosesors with high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and good stability will be a promising candidate for a broad spectrum of applications.

Energy plants as biofuel source and as accumulators of heavy metals

Fossil fuel depletion and soil and water pollution gave impetus to the development of a novel perspective of sustainable development. In addition to the use of plant biomass for ethanol production, plants can be used to reduce the concentration of heavy metals in soil and water. Due to tolerance to high levels of metals, many plant species, crops, non-crops, medicinal, and pharmaceutical energy plants are well-known metal hyperaccumulators. This paper focuses on studies investigating the potential of Miscanthus sp., Beta vulgaris L., Saccharum sp., Ricinus communis L. Prosopis sp. and Arundo donax L. in heavy metal removal and biofuel production. Phytoremediation employing these plants showed great potential for bioaccumulation of Co, Cr, Cu, Al, Pb, Ni, Fe, Cd, Zn, Hg, Se, etc. This review presents the potential of lignocellulose plants to remove pollutants being a valuable substrate for biofuel production. Also, pretreat-ments, dealing with toxic biomass, and biofuel production are discussed.

Effect of copper oxide nanoparticles on two varieties of sweetpotato plants

Little information is available on the interaction of CuO nanoparticles (nCuO) with tuberous roots. In this study, Beauregard-14 (B-14, low lignin) and Covington (COV, high lignin) sweetpotato varieties were cultivated until maturity in soil amended with nCuO, bulk copper oxide (bCuO) and CuCl2 at 25-125 mg/kg. The Cu treatments had no significant influence on chlorophyll content. Gas exchange parameters were not affected in B-14. In COV, however, at 125 mg/kg treatments, bCuO reduced the intercellular CO2 (11%), while CuCl2 increased it by 7%, compared with control (p ≤ 0.035). At 25 mg/kg nCuO increased the length of COV roots (20.7 ± 2.0 cm vs. 14.6 ± 0.8 cm, p ≤ 0.05). In periderm of B-14, nCuO, at 125 mg/kg, increased Mg by 232%, while the equivalent concentration of CuCl2 reduced P by 410%, compared with control (p ≤ 0.05). The data suggest the potential application of nCuO as nanofertilizer for sweetpotato storage root production.
