Integrated 1D and 2D model for better assessing runoff quantity control of low impact development facilities on community scale

Smart roofs featuring predictive control: An upgrade for mitigating precipitation extreme-induced pluvial floods

In the face of escalating urban pluvial floods exacerbated by climate change, conventional roof systems fall short of effectively managing precipitation extremes. This paper introduces a smart predictive solution: the Smart Internal Drainage Roof (SIDR) system, which leverages forecasted data to enhance the mitigation of pluvial floods in Central Business District (CBD) areas. Unlike traditional approaches, SIDRs utilize a synergistic combination of Rule-based Control (RBC) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms, tailored to optimize the operational efficiency of both grey and green roofs. Within the examined 1.3 km2 area in Beijing, China, SIDRs, covering 11% of the site, decreased total flooded areas by 30%-50% and eliminated 60%-100% of high-risk zones during three actual events. Moreover, SIDRs streamlined outflow processes without extending discharge time and reduced flood duration at a high-risk underpass by more than half. The SIDR's distinct features, including a high control resolution of 5 min, integration with existing waterproofs, and advanced 2D dynamic runoff visualization, position it as a scalable and cost-efficient upgrade in urban flood resilience strategies.

Machine learning parallel system for integrated process-model calibration and accuracy enhancement in sewer-river system

The process-based water system models have been transitioning from single-functional to integrated multi-objective and multi-functional since the worldwide digital upgrade of urban water system management. The proliferation of model complexity results in more significant uncertainty and computational requirements. However, conventional model calibration methods are insufficient in dealing with extensive computational time and limited monitoring samples. Here we introduce a novel machine learning system designed to expedite parameter optimization with limited data and boost efficiency in parameter search. MLPS, termed the machine learning parallel system for fast parameter search of integrated process-based models, aims to enhance both the performance and efficiency of the integrated model by ensuring its comprehensiveness, accuracy, and stability. MLPS was constructed upon the concept of model surrogation + algorithm optimization using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) coupled with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The optimization results of the Integrated sewer network and urban river model demonstrate that the average relative percentage difference of the predicted river pollutant concentrations increases from 1.1 to 6.0, and the average absolute percent bias decreases from 124.3% to 8.8%. The model outputs closely align with the monitoring data, and parameter calibration time is reduced by 89.94%. MLPS enables the efficient optimization of integrated process-based models, facilitating the application of highly precise complex models in environmental management. The design of MLPS also presents valuable insights for optimizing complex models in other fields.

Deep learning, geometric characterization and hydrodynamic modeling for assessing sewer defect impacts on urban flooding: A case study in Guangzhou, China

Deep learning techniques have offered innovative and efficient tools for accurate and automated detection of sewer defects by leveraging large-scale sewer data and advanced feature learning algorithms. However, there has been a lack of thorough characterization of the geometric properties of segmented defects, let alone systematically calculate the severity level of sewer defects and quantitatively evaluate their impacts on flood conditions in hydrodynamic models. This study proposed a comprehensive framework and related metrics to accurately and automatically detect, segment, characterize, and evaluate the impacts of sewer defects on flooded nodes and volumes by integrating a DeepLabv3+-based segmentation technique, an automated geometric characterization and severity quantification module, and a GIS and SWMM-based hydrodynamic modeling. The results clearly showed in details where and how much the urban flooding was affected by the different defect types. The segmentation model achieved satisfactory detection performance, with mean pixel accuracy (MPA), mean intersection over union (MIoU), and frequency weighted intersection over union (FWIoU) of 0.99, 0.74 and 0.95, respectively. In terms of severity level quantification, there were 98%, 90%, 90% and 83% of predictions consistent with real conditions for falling off, obstacle, disjoint and leakage. It was shown that the number of surcharging manholes and total flood volume (TFV) were greatly affected by sewer defects, with over 16% increase in TFVs under all investigated rainfall events. The results addressed the impacts of sewer defects on urban flooding and demonstrated the powerful tools provided by the proposed framework for decision-making on sewer defect detection and management.

Hydrological reduction and control effect evaluation of sponge city construction based on one-way coupling model of SWMM-FVCOM: A case in university campus

The exacerbation of global warming, the frequent incidence of extreme weather events, and the rapid urbanization have collectively contributed to the heightened prevalence of flooding in urban areas. As a result of this challenge, sponge city (SPC) has been adopted in China as an efficient means of preventing and controlling urban floods. To evaluate the hydrological reduction and control effect of sponge city construction (SPCC) within a university campus, a one-way coupled model integrating one-dimensional sewer hydrodynamic model (SWMM) and two-dimensional surface flow model (FVCOM), namely SWMM-FVCOM model, was established. The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of the SWMM were greater than 0.75 under there rainfalls with different intensity, indicating the good reliability and stability of this model could be used in the subsequent simulation. An analysis of drainage capacity and the risk of urban flooding was conducted using this model before and after the implementation of SPCC, considering six rainfall scenarios. Implementing SPCC demonstrated an effective performance in mitigating surface runoff, regulating inspection well overflow, and reducing overflow volume in the study region. However, the efficacy of runoff control diminished proportionally with the escalation of rainfall return period. Simultaneously, the implementation of low impact development (LID) measures can significantly decrease the extent and magnitude of surface inundations. The reduction rate of SPCC on the area of waterlogging ranged from 55.84% to 72.50%. But the control rate decreased with increasing rainfall return periods, demonstrating that adopting SPCC can effectively mitigate the severity of urban flooding resulting from low rainfall return period events (Tr < 20 years). This study can provide scientific foundation for environment managers to evaluate the impact of urban flooding prevention and control on runoff pollution mitigation when adopting the implementation of SPCC.

Enhancing stormwater management with low impact development (LID): a review of the rain barrel, bioretention, and permeable pavement applicability in Indonesia

Low impact development (LID) is a sustainable land use and planning strategy that aims to minimize the environmental impacts of development. A community can enhance their water resources and create sustainable and resilient neighbourhoods. This approach has demonstrated success in managing stormwater and promoting water reuse globally, however, its suitability in developing countries like Indonesia remains uncertain and requires further investigation. The implementation of LID in developing countries may face several challenges including high density and complex drainage networks, combined sewer usage, clay soil type, irregular housing layouts, community socio-economic characteristics, affordability, cost, and the availability of regulations and policies. With proper planning and site-specific strategies, LID can be implemented effectively in Indonesia. Clear regulations, secured funding source and community-based LID are all essential for successful LID deployment. This paper can be used as a starting point for considering LID implementation in Indonesia and other countries with similar characteristics.

Urban stormwater management at the meso-level: A review of trends, challenges and approaches

Cities worldwide are facing a significant threat of stormwater hazards caused by the increase in extreme downpours and urbanization. Meso-level urban stormwater management focuses on alleviating the detrimental impacts of urban flooding and enhancing water resource utilization at the block or community scale, typically through 1) specific policies and management rules; 2) catchment-scale scenario simulation, optimization and evaluation; 3) the group of stormwater control measures implementation. It may effectively coordinate macro-level urban stormwater management planning and micro-level distributed stormwater control facilities. This study conducts a review of Urban Stormwater Management at Meso-level (USM-M) with a view to research publication trends, citation analysis, geographic spread and subject category, as well as content analysis, including temporal progression and research gaps. The Web of Science database and CiteSpace are used for the bibliometric analysis of 66 articles from 2006 to 2021. The results show that the number of USM-M topic articles generally has an upward trend over the years. Whilst the United States and China are leading research on this topic, the European countries have diverse local research and dense cooperation. Research foci have generally shifted from theoretical frameworks to multi-element subdivided topics and specific technical roadmaps. Moreover, the spatial layout optimization and multi-functional integration are, or will be, potential research directions in terms of enhancing stormwater utilization and co-benefits of USM-M. This systematic review concludes trends, challenges and potential approaches of USM-M, and aims to provide recommendations for researchers and policymakers on the development of a more advanced and comprehensive USM-M.

Effectiveness of Design and Implementation Alternatives for Stormwater Control Measures Modeled at the Watershed Scale

To evaluate the effectiveness of dispersed stormwater control measures (SCMs), it is important to consider groundwater-surface water interactions and their consequences for stream hydrologic responses relevant to channel geomorphic stability and ecology. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different SCM design scenarios and implementation alternatives on exceedance levels and volumes of streamflow at the watershed scale. For this purpose, a process-based block-connector model of Sligo Creek, an urban watershed (29 km2) in the suburbs of Washington, DC, was used to study the effects of SCM system design on the stream hydrograph. The watershed has 34% impervious area (IA), which was discretized into 14 similar-sized subwatersheds, each consisting of pervious and impervious surface areas. Each subwatershed was compartmentalized with the representative overland flow, unsaturated flow, groundwater blocks, and links to main channel segments. The model was calibrated and validated to existing conditions using a 3-year time series of observed flow data. Afterward, a predevelopment simulation was configured. Three SCM unit designs and IA diversions through the SCM retrofit system were simulated. The three unit design scenarios represented a simple pond with surface storage and overflow or SCMs that infiltrate with an engineered soil layer and with or without an underdrain pipe. Differences among the model simulations were evaluated using flow exceedance probability curves. The area of the SCM system was modeled as 5% of the IA retrofit. Three implementation levels, including 10%, 50%, and 90% of the IA diverted through SCMs, were considered for each SCM unit design. The results showed that at least a 50% retrofit of runoff from IA watershedwide would be needed to achieve similar predevelopment base flows and peak flows. Intermediate flows could not be matched but were closest for the infiltration with the underdrain pipe design scenario. It was also found that concentrating the SCMs in the lower portion of the watershed resulted in more effectively achieving the predeveloped exceedance curves than uniform SCM implementation. The results are relevant to planning-level decisions that depend on effectiveness predictions of different SCM unit designs and implementation alternatives in developed watersheds.

Effects of Low-Impact Development Facilities (Water Systems of the Park) on Stormwater Runoff in Shallow Mountainous Areas Based on Dual-Model (SWMM and MIKE21) Simulations

Rapid urbanization has triggered more serious urban flood risks. Many studies have focused on intra-urban flooding, but less attention has been paid to rainfall and flood risks at the urban fringe. Nowadays, China is vigorously promoting the construction of sponge cities in the whole area. It is important to study the construction of sponge cities in shallow mountainous areas, which are an important barrier between cities and mountains. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Low-Impact Development (LID) facilities under different rainfall scenarios in developed shallow mountainous areas. The second garden and flower exposition ("the Expo Park") in Hebei Province is used as an example. The SWMM and MIKE21 models were used to simulate the hydrological processes before and after the construction of "the Expo Park", and the models were calibrated with the measured data. Peak flow rate, outflow volume, rainfall-outflow ratio, runoff velocity, and water feature area of the water system were used as indicators to evaluate their effectiveness. The results showed that the placement of LID facilities had a positive impact on the construction of the shallow mountain area. Specifically, (1) LID facilities can reduce the peak flow rate, delayed peak flow time, outflow volume, and rainfall outflow ratio of stormwater runoff in mountainous areas; and (2) they can effectively collect rainwater and become a supplement to the landscape water system of the site. These findings provide a scientific basis for the construction of LID facilities in shallow mountainous areas, which is important for the development and flood management of shallow mountainous areas.

Optimal configuration of low impact development practices for the management of urban runoff pollution under uncertainty

The urbanization process has seen an accelerated increase in recent decades, leading to urban runoff pollution becoming more prominent. However, uncertainty of the pollution output and complexity of management systems have made controlling urban runoff pollution challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to propose advanced modeling methods for these challenges. This research presents an integrated urban runoff pollution management (IURPM) model for optimal configuration of low impact development (LID) practices under multiple uncertainties. The IURPM model combines the hybrid land-use prediction and improved pollution estimation models with interval parameter, stochastic parameter, and multi-objective programming. The proposed IURPM model can not only predict the output characteristics, but also provide optimal configuration schemes for the LID practices in the management of urban runoff pollution under multiple scenarios. In addition, uncertainties expressed as discrete intervals and probability density function in the management systems can be effectively addressed. A case study of the IURPM model was conducted in Dongguan City, South China. Results show that considerable amounts of urban runoff pollutants would export from Dongguan City by 2025. The export loads and pollution output flux per unit area would have significant spatial heterogeneity. The results further indicate that population size, gross domestic product, and regional area size are expected to play important roles in the pollution export, while impervious surface coverage and population density would likely have great influences on the output flux of urban runoff pollution. Based on the model findings, multiple LID practices should be adopted in Dongguan City to reduce the urban runoff pollution loads. Using the IURPM model, multiple LID implementation schemes can be obtained under different pollution reduction scenarios and significance levels, that can provide decision-making support for urban water environmental management, considering variations in the policymaker's decision-making preferences. This study demonstrates that the IURPM model can be applied to the optimal configuration of LID practices for the management of urban runoff pollution under uncertainty.

Determining the Efficiency of the Sponge City Construction Pilots in China Based on the DEA-Malmquist Model

Sponge city construction (SCC) has improved the quality of the urban water ecological environment, and the policy implementation effect of SCC pilots is particularly remarkable. Based on the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, this study employed the related index factors such as economy, ecology, infrastructure, and the population of the pilot city as the input, and the macro factors of SCC as the output, to scientifically evaluate the relative efficiency between the SCC pilots in China. Eleven representative SCC pilots were selected for analysis from the perspectives of static and dynamic approaches, and comparisons based on the horizontal analysis of the efficiency of SCC pilots were conducted and some targeted policy suggestions are put forward, which provide a reliable theoretical model and data support for the efficiency evaluation of SCC. This paper can be used as a reference for construction by providing a DEA model for efficiency evaluation methods and thus helps public sector decision makers choose the appropriate construction scale for SCC pilots.

Evaluation of comprehensive benefits of sponge cities using meta-analysis in different geographical environments in China

With the rapid progress in urbanization, frequent urban waterlogging and non-point source pollution are threatening the living and health of human beings. Sponge city construction has become an effective means to curb urban waterlogging. Although related studies have explored the comprehensive benefits of sponge cities, few studies have been conducted on the effects of different geographical environments on runoff control and suspended solid (SS) removal. Based on 76 cities with sponge cities in China, this study used the meta-analysis method to evaluate the relationships of climate, terrain, underlying surface conditions, and construction area with the increase in the total annual runoff control rate and SS removal rate. The results reveal that the runoff control benefit can be significantly improved by sponge cities under the combined conditions of average annual precipitation of approximately 1000 mm, high fractional vegetation cover, sufficient soil fertility, a terrain slope i of ≤2%, and a permeability coefficient of strata of 100-200 m/d, especially in northern China, where the weight representing the quantity of comprehensive benefits was calculated to be 25.5%. In addition, the study results assist in reforming unfavorable geographical environments in the construction of sponge city, thus providing more effective solutions for tackling SS pollution. The most significant benefits of SS removal were obtained in north central China, where the weight was 21.4%. This study comprehensively investigated the effects of geographical environmental factors on the comprehensive benefits of sponge city reflected by the improvement in the total annual runoff control rate and the SS removal rate. The results will provide guidance for the planning and design of global sponge cities and effectively optimize the practice, scale, and location of existing construction based on specific geographical environments.

Coal gangue modified bioretention system for runoff pollutants removal and the biological characteristics

In this study, coal gangue (CG) was applied as media in bioretention system to remove runoff pollutant. CG modified bioretention systems show good removal efficiency towards runoff pollutant due to the high adsorption capacity of CG. The removal of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia (NH₄⁺-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by CG modified bioretention systems was influenced by diverse rainfall conditions including rainfall concentration, recurrence period and drying period, and their removal rate ranged 94-99%, 30-70%, 83-97% and 33-86%, respectively. The effluent concentration of Zn, Pb and Cu was as low as 3.14-10.99 μg/L, 0.66-2.56 μg/L and 0.60-3.15 μg/L, respectively. In addition, CG could promote the plant heavy metal uptake and thus decrease their accumulation in soil to a certain extent. Meanwhile, Malondialdehyde (MDA) content and peroxidases (POD) activities of plants in CG modified bioretention were lower than that in tradition bioretention, indicating that CG could help plants recovery and lessened the oxidative stress for the negative impact of high heavy metals accumulation. CG-based media alleviated the inhibitory effect of rainwater runoff pollutant accumulation (especially heavy metals) on microbial diversity and the enhancement of the dominant bacteria (such as Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota) could conduce the nutrients removal in the bioretention systems. In overall, this study demonstrated that the CG modified bioretention systems show an excellent removal performance combine with biological effects.

Urban Inundation under Different Rainstorm Scenarios in Lin'an City, China

Under the circumstances of global warming and rapid urbanization, damage caused by urban inundation are becoming increasingly severe, attracting the attention of both researchers and governors. The accurate simulation of urban inundation is essential for the prevention of inundation hazards. In this study, a 1D pipe network and a 2D urban inundation coupling model constructed by InfoWorks ICM was used to simulate the inundation conditions in the typical urbanized area in the north of Lin’an. Two historical rainfall events in 2020 were utilized to verify the modeling results. The spatial–temporal variation and the causes of urban inundation under different designed rainfalls were studied. The results were as follows: (1) The constructed model had a good simulation accuracy, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient was higher than 0.82, R² was higher than 0.87, and the relative error was ±20%. (2) The simulation results of different designed rainfall scenarios indicated that the maximum inundation depth and inundation extent increased with the increase in the return period, rainfall peak position coefficient, and rainfall duration. According to the analysis results, the urban inundation in Lin’an is mainly affected by topography, drainage network (spatial distribution and pipe diameter), and rainfall patterns. The results are supposed to provide technical support and a decision-making reference for the urban management department of Lin’an to design inundation prevention measures.

Sponge City Practices in China: From Pilot Exploration to Systemic Demonstration

In recent years, China has been committed to strengthening environmental governance and trying to build a sustainable society in which humans and nature develop in harmony. As a new urban construction concept, sponge city uses natural and ecological methods to retain rainwater, alleviate flooding problems, reduce the damage to the water environment, and gradually restore the hydrological balance of the construction area. The paper presents a review of sponge city construction from its inception to systematic demonstration. In this paper, research gaps are discussed and future efforts are proposed. The main contents include: (1) China’s sponge city construction includes but is not limited to source control or a drainage system design. Sponge city embodies foreign experience and the wisdom of ancient Chinese philosophy. The core of sponge city construction is to combine various specific technologies to alleviate urban water problems such as flooding, water environment pollution, shortage of water resources and deterioration of water ecology; (2) this paper also introduces the sponge city pilot projects in China, and summarizes the achievements obtained and lessons learned, which are valuable for future sponge city implementation; (3) the objectives, corresponding indicators, key contents and needs of sponge city construction at various scales are different. The work at the facility level is dedicated to alleviating urban water problems through reasonable facility scale and layout, while the work at the plot level is mainly to improve the living environment through sponge city construction. The construction of urban and watershed scales is more inclined to ecological restoration and blue-green storage spaces construction. Besides, the paper also describes the due obligations in sponge city construction of various stakeholders.

Investigating the Impact of Spatial Distribution of Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) Components on Their Flood Mitigation Performance in Communities with High Groundwater Levels

This paper investigated the impact of the spatial distribution of SuDS components on their flood reduction performance and the underlying mechanisms in a community with high groundwater levels. The effects of SuDS components’ connectivity, decentralized level, and installation position along the flow direction on the reduction of total discharge volume (TDV), average discharge flow rate (ADFR), maximum discharge flow rate (MDFR), inundated area (IA), average inundated depth (AID), and maximum inundated depth (MID) were studied by coupling of the storm water management model (SWMM) and high-performance integrated hydrodynamic modelling system (HiPIMS). The results demonstrate that the connectivity has a positive linear correlation with the reduction of TDV (R2 > 0.991), ADFR (R2 > 0.992), and MDFR (R2 > 0.958), while the decentralized level of rain gardens and green roofs present positive one-phase exponential correlation with the reduction of TDV (R2 > 0.935), ADFR (R2 > 0.934) and MDFR (R2 > 0.967). A better-integrated mitigation of TDV and ADFR could be achieved by installing SuDS upstream along the flow direction. The connectivity from green roofs to rain gardens has a positive effect on the reduction of AID and MID but leads to the increase of IA. The findings of this study may contribute to the development of general spatial distribution guidelines and strategies to optimize the overall performance of SuDS components, especially at a community scale.

Comprehensive modelling and cost-benefit optimization for joint regulation of algae in urban water system

Algal blooms in urban water system is an international concern, which especially in China, have become a major obstacle to the urban water environment improvement since the preliminary achievements were made in the treatment of black and odorous water bodies. The complex blooming mechanisms require a joint regulation plan. This study established a framework that consisted of three steps, i.e., simulation, optimization, and verification, to build an optimal joint regulation plan. By taking the urban river network in Suzhou Pingjiang Xincheng as a case study, the cost-benefits of six alternative regulation measures were assessed using an algal bloom mechanism model and the discounted cash flow model based on 70 regulation scenarios. The joint regulation plan was optimized using the marginal-cost-based greedy strategy on the basis of the cost-benefits of different measures. The optimized joint plans, which were verified to be global optima, were more cost-effective than the designed regulation scenarios, and reduced the average chlorophyll-a concentrations by 55.3%-60.1% compared with the status quo. Applying the optimized cost allocation ratios of each measure to adjust the existing regulation scheme of another similar case verified that the optimization results had great generalizability.

Assessment of Sponge City Flood Control Capacity according to Rainfall Pattern Using a Numerical Model after Muti-Source Validation

Urban floods are a common urban disaster that threaten the economy and development of cities. Sponge cities can improve flood resistance ability and reduce floods by setting low-impact development measures (LID). Evaluating flood reduction benefits is the basic link in the construction of sponge cities. Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate the benefits of sponge cities from the perspective of different rain patterns. In this study, we investigated the urban runoff of various rainfall patterns in Mianyang city using the Strom Water Management Model (SWMM). We employed 2–100-year return periods and three different temporal rainfall downscaling methods to evaluate rain patterns and simulate urban runoff in Mianyang, with and without the implementation of sponge city measures. After calibration, model performance was validated using multi-source data concerning flood peaks and inter-annual variations in flood magnitude. Notably, the effects of peak rainfall patterns on historical floods were generally greater than the effects of synthetic rainfalls generated by temporal downscaling. Compared to the rainfall patterns of historical flood events, the flood protection capacities of sponge cities can be easily overestimated when using the synthetic rainfall patterns generated by temporal downscaling. Overall, an earlier flood peak was associated with better flood sponge city protection capacity. In this context, the results obtained in this study provide useful reference information about the impact of rainfall pattern on urban flood control by LID, and can be used for sponge city design in other part of China.

Effects of low impact development on the stormwater runoff and pollution control

The frequent urbanization and extreme rainfall events have posed the threat to the urban environment. The implementation of low impact development (LID) practices with great potential for control urban flood and overflow pollution is not comprehensively understood yet due to the influence of complex factors (i.e., hydrological pattern, installation location, and vertical parameter setting). In this study, the hydraulic and water quality model were used to analyze the hydrological and pollution reduction of outfall and storage under different hydrological patterns, vertical parameter setting, and green infrastructure installation locations, which can determine the best implementation of the scheme for overflow pollution control. The results showed that nine parameters of the vertical layer regarding the four parameters impacted the peak value and load of suspended solids (SS). The combination scheme of the LID practices was further proposed based on the selection and analysis of the single LID practice. Besides, considering the installation location, the downstream installed location was a better choice. The horizontal connection of overflow runoff and pollution could be reduced by up to 9.75% and 36.46%, respectively. In addition, the horizontal connection can effectively reduce the peak value of inflow and pollutants at the time of assessing storage tank impact, which reach the maximum of 14.08% and 29.25%, respectively. The pollutants distribution became uniform and showed better resilience against rainfall intensity, which is beneficial to the management of stormwater. Our findings can provide guidance for Sponge City construction and effectively alleviate the combined sewer overflow.

Flood Control and Aquifer Recharge Effects of Sponge City: A Case Study in North China

Sponge City is an integrated urban stormwater management approach and practice to tackle waterlogging, flooding, water scarcity, and their related problems. Despite many positive effects of Sponge City on flood control that have been investigated and revealed, the effect on aquifer recharge is still less known. Considering maximizing the function of natural elements such as surface water bodies and subsurface storage space, to minimize the use of a gray drainage system, a Sponge City design was proposed to substitute the planning development scheme in the study area. The stormwater management model of SWMM (storm water management model) and the groundwater flow model of MODFlow (Modular Three-dimensional Finite-difference Groundwater Flow Model) were adopted to evaluate the flood-control effect and aquifer-recharge effect, respectively. Compared with the traditional planning scenario, the peak runoff is approximately 92% less than that under the traditional planning scenario under the condition of a 5-year return period. Due to the increase in impervious areas of urban construction, the total aquifer recharge from precipitation and surface water bodies was decreased both in the present planning scenario and the Sponge City design scenario. However, the Sponge City design has a positive impact on maintaining groundwater level stabilization and even raises the groundwater level in some specific areas where stormwater seepage infrastructure is located.

Investigation of the low impact development strategies for highly urbanized area via auto-calibrated Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the low impact development (LID) practices on sustainable urban flood storm water management. We applied three LID techniques, i.e. green roof, permeable pavements and bioretention cells, on a highly urbanized watershed in Istanbul, Turkey. The EPA-SWMM was used as a hydrologic-hydraulic model and the model calibration was performed by the well-known Parameter ESTimation (PEST) tool. The rainfall-runoff events occurred between 2012 and 2020. A sensitivity analysis on the parameter selection was applied to reduce the computational cost. The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) was used as the objective function and it was calculated as 0.809 in the model calibration. The simulations were conducted for six different return periods of a storm event, i.e. 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 years, in which the synthetic storm event hyetographs were produced by means of the alternating block method. The results revealed that the combination of green roof and permeable pavements have the major impact on both the peak flood reduction and runoff volume reduction compared to the single LIDs. The maximum runoff reduction percentage was obtained as 56.02% for a 10 years return period of a storm event in the combination scenario.

ArcDrain: A GIS Add-In for Automated Determination of Surface Runoff in Urban Catchments

Surface runoff determination in urban areas is crucial to facilitate ex ante water planning, especially in the context of climate and land cover changes, which are increasing the frequency of floods, due to a combination of violent storms and increased imperviousness. To this end, the spatial identification of urban areas prone to runoff accumulation is essential, to guarantee effective water management in the future. Under these premises, this work sought to produce a tool for automated determination of urban surface runoff using a geographic information systems (GIS). This tool, which was designed as an ArcGIS add-in called ArcDrain, consists of the discretization of urban areas into subcatchments and the subsequent application of the rational method for runoff depth estimation. The formulation of this method directly depends on land cover type and soil permeability, thereby enabling the identification of areas with a low infiltration capacity. ArcDrain was tested using the city of Santander (northern Spain) as a case study. The results achieved demonstrated the accuracy of the tool for detecting high runoff rates and how the inclusion of mitigation measures in the form of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and green infrastructure (GI) can help reduce flood hazards in critical zones.

Multi-Objective Model-Based Assessment of Green-Grey Infrastructures for Urban Flood Mitigation

This paper presents the performance quantification of different green-grey infrastructures, including rainfall-runoff and infiltration processes, on the overland flow and its connection with a sewer system. The present study suggests three main components to form the structure of the proposed model-based assessment. The first two components provide the optimal number of green infrastructure (GI) practices allocated in an urban catchment and optimal grey infrastructures, such as pipe and storage tank sizing. The third component evaluates selected combined green-grey infrastructures based on rainfall-runoff and infiltration computation in a 2D model domain. This framework was applied in an urban catchment in Dhaka City (Bangladesh) where different green-grey infrastructures were evaluated in relation to flood damage and investment costs. These practices implemented separately have an impact on the reduction of damage and investment costs. However, their combination has been shown to be the best action to follow. Finally, it was proved that including rainfall-runoff and infiltration processes, along with the representation of GI within a 2D model domain, enhances the analysis of the optimal combination of infrastructures, which in turn allows the drainage system to be assessed holistically.

Impact of green infrastructure on the mitigation of road-deposited sediment induced stormwater pollution

As a vital stormwater pollution source, the pollutants associated with road-deposited sediment (RDS) have become a growing concern in urban water management. Green infrastructure has exhibited great potential in stormwater pollution mitigation, but is not comprehensively understood yet due to the influences of complex RDS-associated pollutant migration processes (i.e., build-up, wash-off, and discharge). In this study, a city-scale hydraulic and water quality model was used to analyze the migration and removal processes of four RDS-associated pollutants (total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP)) under different hydrological patterns, land-cover types, and green infrastructure installation locations. Results show that the antecedent dry-weather period was the main factor influencing RDS build-up, while the precipitation pattern strongly impacted RDS wash-off, discharge, and removal. The downstream-installed green infrastructures reduced the RDS-induced stormwater pollution by up to 68% and relieved the pollution-mitigation pressure of the studied drainage networks by almost 50%. The TSS and COD removal rates were higher (62.22-68.09%) near green space, while those of TN and TP were higher around buildings and roads (40.00-62.50%). Sensitivity analysis indicated that seven parameters regarding the surface layer characteristics and soil texture class strongly impacted the pollution-mitigation performance among the 31 technical parameters of green infrastructure. The results of this study would assist urban water management by optimizing green infrastructure for stormwater pollution mitigation.

An empirical modeling approach to predicting pollutant loads and developing cost-effective stormwater treatment strategies for a large urban watershed

Stormwater treatment strategies were evaluated for the upper Ballona Creek Watershed in Los Angeles, CA using an empirical model of stormwater runoff quantity and quality with zeroth-order regularization and a limited memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno Bound constrained optimization routine. The model used landuse based estimation on the runoff volume, event mean concentration (EMC) and pollutant load employing ten different landuses, including highways and local roads. The model was validated by showing that its predictions were in reasonable agreement (r² ~0.6 to 0.8) with total zinc (Zn), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) loadings measured at the monitoring site at the bottom of the watershed. The developed model was used to demonstrate and quantify the benefits of the stormwater treatment practices (STPs) prioritized at specific landuses with high pollutant mass emission rates. For this demonstration, total Zn was selected as it is one of the most concerning pollutants in an extremely urbanized area such as the Ballona Creek Watershed. Transportation landuse including local roads and highways was found to be the best candidate for the STP applications due to their high percent load contribution per percent area. By focusing STPs for transportation landuse, the water quality goal of total Zn in the study watershed was expected be achieved at approximately 75% less cost.

A comparison of the growth status, rainfall retention and purification effects of four green roof plant species

Vegetation is a key component of green roofs and one of the most important factors affecting the rainfall quantity and quality of green roofs. Four plant species (Sedum lineare Thunb., Sedum spurium 'Coccineum', Sedum aizoon L. and Sedum spectabile) and two planting methods (single-plant and mixed-plant) were tested on extensive green roofs (EGRs) in 2019. Plant growth status (plant height and vegetation coverage), rainfall volume control, nutrient concentration and load reduction were used to analyse the impact of the situation and the different plant growth conditions. The results showed that the growth status of Sedum lineare Thunb., Sedum aizoon L. and Sedum spectabile was great, and the vegetation coverage was more than 95% in summer. Each EGR with different sedum species had strong rainfall retention effects. The average retention rates of Sedum spectabile, Sedum lineare Thunb, mixed plants, Sedum aizoon L. and Sedum spurium 'Coccineum' were 90.98% and 91.38%, 88.51%, 83.42% and 84.17%, respectively. The average total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) concentrations of Sedum lineare Thunb. were 13.77 mg/L and 7.64 mg/L, which were higher than those of other sedum species, and the average concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and total phosphorus (TP) of mixed plants were 4.01 mg/L and 0.48 mg/L, which were higher than those of single plants. Different plant species had different effects on nutrient loads. The EGRs of single plants and mixed plants indicated sinks of TN and NH₄-N and sources of TP, but the performance of NO₃^--N was inconsistent. Comprehensively, Sedum lineare Thunb., Sedum aizoon L. and Sedum spectabile were suitable for the green roofs. This study provides scientific support for the green roofs' application of actual projects and has a strong reference value for the development of green infrastructure.

Simulating rainfall runoff and assessing low impact development (LID) facilities in sponge airport

The appearance of extreme weather causes frequent airport flooding, which has a serious impact on the normal operation of an airport. In this study, three simulation scenarios are set in order to study the effect of low impact development (LID) facilities (green roof and vegetative swale) on the water depth of overflow junctions and total inflow to the study area outlet in an airport at different rainfall return periods (2 a, 5 a, 20 a and 50 a). Vegetative swale has better reduction effect on water depth of overflow junctions than has green roof. The reduction rate of vegetative swale is about 25-52% at different rainfall return periods, but the effect of green roof is not obvious. For the double peak rainstorm, the reduction effect on the water depth of overflow junctions after setting vegetative swale for the first rain peak is better than that for the second rain peak. Under the condition of 2 a, 5 a, and 20 a, the total inflow reduction rates of study area outlet after applied green roof and vegetative swale are 16.85%, 20% and 22.17% respectively, and the effect is poor (only 2.26%) at low-frequency return period (50 a). This study can provide theoretical guidance for the design of LID facilities of a sponge airport.

Factors affecting the ability of extensive green roofs to reduce nutrient pollutants in rainfall runoff

Green roofs can retain urban rainfall runoff, but there are doubts about whether they can reduce urban nonpoint source pollution. To explore the factors affecting the ability of green roofs to reduce nutrients in rainfall runoff, nine types of extensive green roofs (EGRs) were analysed during 38 natural rainfall events and two early spring irrigation runoff events from 1 March to 30 November 2019 in Beijing. Differences among the module scale, growing medium material, growing medium depth, drainage layer material, planting time, rainfall characteristics and seasonal variation were examined to study their correlation with pollutant event mean concentration (EMC) and the load reduction performance of EGRs. The results showed that EGRs had higher total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) concentrations than traditional concrete roofs, but total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were similar, and EGRs could reduce some of the nutrient loads. One-way analysis of variance showed that the module scale, growing medium material, growing medium depth, drainage layer material, and planting time had no significant effect on TN and NO₃^--N concentrations (p > 0.05). The growing medium material had a significant effect on the TP concentration (p < 0.05). From the perspective of nutrient load reduction, module scale had a significant effect on TN and NH₄⁺-N loads (p < 0.05). The growing medium depth had a significant effect on NH₄⁺-N loads (p < 0.05). In addition, the growing medium material had a significant effect on TP loads (p < 0.05). When porous wool fibre and a bumpy plastic drainage board were selected as drainage layer materials, the effect on the NO₃^--N load differed significantly. In other situations, there were no factors with significant differences. In addition, the rainfall characteristics and seasonal variation influenced the pollutant concentration and EGR runoff load.
