Carbon sequestration, kinetics of ammonia volatilization and nutrient availability in alkaline sandy soil as a function on applying calotropis biochar produced at different pyrolysis temperatures

Mitigation of ammonia volatilization from organic and inorganic nitrogen sources applied to soil using water hyacinth biochars

The recent global population explosion has increased people's food demand. To meet this demand, huge amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilizer have been applied in the worldwide. However, ammonia (NH3) volatilization is one of the primary factors of N loss from soil after N application causing decrease crop N utilization efficiency and productivity. Incubation experiments were conducted on an acidic clayey soil with two different N sources (urea and anaerobic digestion effluent; ADE), two differently-produced biochars, and three biochar application rates (0%, 0.25%, and 1.0% w/w). Ammonia volatilization was lower from urea (14.0-23.5 mg N kg-1) and ADE (11.3-21.0 mg N kg-1) with biochar application than those without biochar (40.1 and 26.2 mg N kg-1 from urea and ADE alone, respectively). Biochar application significantly mitigated volatilization and reduction percentages for urea and ADE were 40%-64% and 18%-55%, respectively. 1.0% biochar application mitigated volatilization significantly compared to 0.25% application regardless of N source and biochar types. Possible mechanism for volatilization mitigation for urea and ADE were increased N immobilization by soil microorganisms and accelerated net nitrification rate due to increased soil nitrifying bacteria, respectively. Overall, our results clarified different mechanisms for N volatilization mitigation from different (inorganic vs. organic) N sources with biochar application.

Biochar influences nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in two texturally different soils

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are vital for crop growth. However, most agricultural systems have limited inherent ability to supply N and P to crops. Biochars (BCs) are strongly advocated in agrosystems and are known to improve the availability of N and P in crops through different chemical transformations. Herein, a soil-biochar incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the transformations of N and P in two different textured soils, namely clay loam and loamy sand, on mixing with rice straw biochar (RSB) and acacia wood biochar (ACB) at each level (0, 0.5, and 1.0% w/w). Ammonium N (NH4-N) decreased continuously with the increasing incubation period. The ammonium N content disappeared rapidly in both the soils incubated with biochars compared to the unamended soil. RSB increased the nitrate N (NO3-N) content significantly compared to ACB for the entire study period in both texturally divergent soils. The nitrate N content increased with the enhanced biochar addition rate in clay loam soil until 15 days after incubation; however, it was reduced for the biochar addition rate of 1% compared to 0.5% at 30 and 60 days after incubation in loamy sand soil. With ACB, the net increase in nitrate N content with the biochar addition rate of 1% remained higher than the 0.5% rate for 60 days in clay loam and 30 days in loamy sand soil. The phosphorus content remained consistently higher in both the soils amended with two types of biochars till the completion of the experiment.

Biochar's role in improving pakchoi quality and microbial community structure in rhizosphere soil

Background

Biochar amendments enhance crop productivity and improve agricultural quality. To date, studies on the correlation between different amounts of biochar in pakchoi (Brassica campestris L.) quality and rhizosphere soil microorganisms are limited, especially in weakly alkaline soils. The experiment was set up to explore the effect of different concentrations of biochar on vegetable quality and the correlation between the index of quality and soil bacterial community structure changes.

Methods

The soil was treated in the following ways via pot culture: the blank control (CK) without biochar added and with biochar at different concentrations of 1% (T1), 3% (T2), 5% (T3), and 7% (T4). Here, we investigatedthe synergistic effect of biochar on the growth and quality of pakchoi, soil enzymatic activities, and soil nutrients. Microbial communities from pakchoi rhizosphere soil were analyzed by Illumina MiSeq.

Results

The results revealed that adding 3% biochar significantly increased plant height, root length, and dry weight of pakchoi and increased the contents of soluble sugars, soluble proteins, Vitamin C (VC), cellulose, and reduced nitrate content in pakchoi leaves. Meanwhile, soil enzyme activities and available nutrient content in rhizosphere soil increased. This study demonstrated that the the microbial community structure of bacteria in pakchoi rhizosphere soil was changed by applying more than 3% biochar. Among the relatively abundant dominant phyla, Gemmatimonadetes, Anaerolineae, Deltaproteobacteria and Verrucomicrobiae were reduced, and Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, and Acidimicrobiia relative abundance increased. Furthermore, adding 3% biochar reduced the relative abundance of Gemmatimonas and increased the relative abundances of Ilumatobacter, Luteolibacter, Lysobacter, Arthrobacter, and Mesorhizobium. The nitrate content was positively correlated with the abundance of Gemmatimonadetes, and the nitrate content was significantly negatively correlated with the relative abundance of Ilumatobacter. Carbohydrate transport and metabolism in the rhizosphere soil of pakchoi decreased, and lipid transport and metabolism increased after biochar application.

Conclusion

Overall, our results indicated that applying biochar improved soil physicochemical states and plant nutrient absorption, and affected the abundance of dominant bacterial groups (e.g., Gemmatimonadetes and Ilumatobacter), these were the main factors to increase pakchoi growth and promote quality of pakchoi. Therefore, considering the growth, quality of pakchoi, and soil environment, the effect of using 3% biochar is better.

Impact of some amendments on kinetics of leaching dissolved organic carbon and ammonium in calcareous sandy soil under vinasse addition

The access of vinasse leachates to water bodies and groundwater exacerbates environmental problems, especially eutrophication. Therefore, a column experiment was performed to examine the effect of adding zeolite (ZL), bone char (BC), and wood chips biochar (WCB) in the presence of vinasse on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, leaching dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ammonium (NH4+) in calcareous sandy soil, as well as studying the kinetics of leaching dissolved organic carbon and ammonium. This column experiment contains four treatments: soil alone (CK), soil + zeolite (SZL), soil + bone char (SBC), and soil + wood chips biochar (SWCB). These amendments were applied to the soil at a level of 4%. Vinasse was added to all treatments at a level of 13 mL per column. The leached total cumulative DOC and total cumulative soluble ammonium amounts decreased significantly with applying ZL, BC, and WCB compared with the soil alone. The effectiveness of these amendments in lowering the total cumulative DOC leaching is in the order of SBC > SWCB > SZL > CK. However, the effectiveness of these amendments in decreasing the total cumulative NH4+ leaching is in the order of SZL > SWCB > SBC > CK. The rate constant (k) of DOC leaching decreased significantly with the application of bone char compared to soil alone treatment. In the presence of vinasse, the apparent half-life of leached DOC from the soil was 8.1, 12.9, 36.7, and 15.5 days for soil CK, SZL, SBC, and SWCB treatments, respectively. Half-life values of leached soluble ammonium from the soil in the presence of vinasse addition were 10.1, 39.5, 28.5, and 37.9 days for CK, SZL, SBC, and SWCB treatments, respectively. Amending soil with BC increased significantly the phosphorus availability, however, applying ZL and BC caused a significant increase in the available potassium in calcareous sandy soil compared to the control treatment. According to these results, it is recommended not to add vinasse alone to sandy soils, but it is preferred to be co-applied with BC amendment at the level of 4% better than ZL and WCB. This would decrease leaching DOC and ammonium to the water table and groundwater as well as enhance nutrient retention in the soil, which in turn, plays a vital role in reducing the harmful effect of vinasse and improving soil fertility.

Biochar carbon sequestration potential rectification in soils: Synthesis effects of biochar on soil CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions

Biochar production and its soil sequestration are promising ways to mitigate global warming. Effects of biochar on soil CO2, CH4 and N2O release have been studied extensively. In contrast, few studies have comprehensively quantified and synthesized the effect of biochar on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and coupled it to the calculation of carbon sequestration potential. This study obtained the influence coefficient of biochar on soil GHG release relative to biochar carbon storage potential in soils under different environmental conditions, by literature statistics and data transformations. Our results showed that the overall average effect of biochar on soil CO2, CH4, N2O and CO2e release observed in our databases would compensate the potential of biochar soil carbon storage by -2.1 ± 3.3 %, 13.1 ± 9.8 %, -1.6 ± 8.6 % and 5.3 ± 11.4 %, respectively. By combining biochar induced soil GHG emission reduction mechanism and results from our literature statistics, some specific application environmental scenarios (such as biochar with high pyrolysis temperature of 500-600 °C, application in flooded soils, application in straw-return scenarios, etc.) were recommended, which could increase the actual carbon sequestration potential of biochar by an average of about 43.3 ± 30.2 % relative the amount of carbon buried. Our findings provide a scientific basis for developing a precise application strategy towards large scale adoption of biochar as a soil amendment for climate change mitigation.

Effect of freeze-thaw manipulation on phytostabilization of industrially contaminated soil with halloysite nanotubes

The latest trends in improving the performance properties of soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) relate to the possibility of using raw additives, including halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) due to eco-friendliness, and inexpensiveness. Lolium perenne L. was cultivated for 52 days in a greenhouse and then moved to a freezing-thawing chamber for 64 days. HNT addition into PTE-contaminated soil cultivated with grass under freezing-thawing conditions (FTC) was tested to demonstrate PTE immobilization during phytostabilization. The relative yields increased by 47% in HNT-enriched soil in a greenhouse, while under FTC decreased by 17% compared to the adequate greenhouse series. The higher PTE accumulation in roots in HNT presence was evident both in greenhouse and chamber conditions. (Cr/Cd and Cu)-relative contents were reduced in soil HNT-enriched-not-FTC-exposed, while (Cr and Cu) in HNT-enriched-FTC-exposed. PTE-immobilization was discernible by (Cd/Cr/Pb and Zn)-redistribution into the reducible fraction and (Cu/Ni and Zn) into the residual fraction in soil HNT-enriched-not-FTC-exposed. FTC and HNT facilitated transformation to the residual fraction mainly for Pb. Based on PTE-distribution patterns and redistribution indexes, HNT's role in increasing PTE stability in soils not-FTC-exposed is more pronounced than in FTC-exposed compared to the adequate series. Sphingomonas, Acidobacterium, and Mycobacterium appeared in all soils. HNTs mitigated FTC's negative effect on microbial diversity and increased Planctomycetia abundance.

Effects of saline water on soil properties and red radish growth in saline soil as a function of co-applying wood chips biochar with chemical fertilizers

BACKGROUND

Currently, using unconventional water sources in agriculture has become necessary to face overpopulation worldwide. Therefore, a pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of irrigation with saline water in the presence of co-applied wood chips biochar (WCB) with chemical fertilizers on physicochemical properties and nutrient availability as well as growth parameters, and yield of red radish (Raphanus sativus L.) grown in the saline sandy soil.

METHODS

The WCB was added to the saline sandy soil at levels of 0 (control), 2.5, and 5% w/w. Then, this soil was cultivated by red radish plants and irrigated with saline water (5 dS m- 1). This experiment was performed in a randomized complete block design with three replicates.

RESULTS

Compared with the control treatment, WCB treatments increased significantly soil water holding capacity by 34.8% and 73.2% for levels of 2.5 and 5%, respectively. Soil pH decreased significantly in all WCB treatments. The relative increase in the total available nitrogen over the control was 30.1 and 103.5% for 2.5 and 5% wood chips biochar, respectively. Compared to the control, applying WCB at 2.5% led to an increase in the fresh root weight of red radish plants by 142.7%, while 5% caused a decrease in the fresh root weight of red radish plants by 29.4%.

CONCLUSION

Recently, WCB represents an interesting approach to the rehabilitation of saline soils and the management of using saline water sources. It is recommended that combined application of WCB at a level of 2.5% with chemical fertilizers in order to improve red radish growth and nutrient retention in the saline sandy soil which preserves the ecosystem as well as increases productivity leading to the reduction of costs.

New approach strategy for heavy metals immobilization and microbiome structure long-term industrially contaminated soils

The progress of engineering technologies highly influences the development of methods that lead to the condition improvement of areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). The aided phytostabilization fits into this trend, and was used to evaluate HM-immobilization effectiveness in phytostabilized soils under variable temperatures by applying 16 freezing-thawing cycles (FTC). Diatomite amendment and Lolium perenne L., also were applied. Cd/Ni/Cu/Pb/Zn each total content in phytostabilized soils were determined, along with the verification for each metal of its distribution in four extracted fractions (F1 ÷ F4) from soils. Based on changes in HM distribution, each metal's stability was estimated. Moreover, HM accumulation in plant roots and stems and soil microbial composition were investigated. Independently of the experimental variant (no-FTC-exposure or FTC-exposure), the above-ground biomass yields in the diatomite-amended series were higher as compared to the corresponding control series. The evident changes in Pb/Zn-bioavailability were observed. The metal stability increase was mainly attributed to metal concentration decreasing in the F1 fraction and increasing in the F4 fraction, respectively. Diatomite increased Cd/Zn-stability in not-FTC-exposed-phytostabilized soils. FTC-exposure favorably influenced Pb/Zn stability. Diatomite increased soil pH values and Cd/Ni/Cu/Zn-bioaccumulation (except Pb) in roots than in stems (in both experimental variants). FTC-exposure influenced soil microbial composition, increasing bacteria abundance belonging to Actinobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Sphingobacteria. At the genus level, FTC exposure significantly increased the abundances of Limnobacter sp., Tetrasphaera sp., Flavobacterium sp., and Dyella sp. Independently of the experimental variant, Sphingomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp., which have a tolerance to HM contamination, were core bacterial groups, comprising about 6 ÷ 7% of all soil bacteria.

The effects of biochar and its applications in the microbial remediation of contaminated soil: A review

The amendment of biochar for soil bioremediation can improve soil conditions, influence soil microbial community, and achieve co-application of biochar-microbe to promote the removal of pollutants. This paper summarizes the positive effects of biochar on microorganisms, including acting as a shelter, providing nutrients, and improving soil conditions (soil aggregation, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and enzymatic activity). These effects will cause variations in microbial abundance, activity, and community structure. Biochar can act as an electron mediator to promote electron transfer in the process of microbial degradation. And the application of biochar in soil bioremediation is also introduced. Nevertheless, toxic substances carried by biochar that may threaten microbial community shouldn't be overlooked. With this review, we can better understand biochar's involvement in soil bioremediation, which will help us choose and modify biochar in a targeted manner for the desired purpose in practical applications.

Ammonia volatilization mitigation in crop farming: A review of fertilizer amendment technologies and mechanisms

Good practices in controlling ammonia produced from the predominant agricultural contributor, crop farming, are the most direct yet effective approaches for mitigating ammonia emissions and further relieving air pollution. Of all the practices that have been investigated in recent decades, fertilizer amendment technologies are garnering increased attention as the low nitrogen use efficiency in most applied quick-acting fertilizers is the main cause of high ammonia emissions. This paper systematically reviews the fertilizer amendment technologies and associated mechanisms that have been developed for ammonia control, especially the technology development of inorganic additives-based complex fertilizers, coating-based enhanced efficiency fertilizers, organic waste-based resource fertilizers and microbial agent and algae-based biofertilizers, and their corresponding mechanisms in farmland properties shifting towards inhibiting ammonia volatilization and enhancing nitrogen use efficiency. The systematic analysis of the literature shows that both enhanced efficiency fertilizers technique and biofertilizers technique present outstanding ammonia inhibition performance with an average mitigation efficiency of 54% and 50.1%, respectively, which is mainly attributed to the slowing down in release and hydrolysis of nitrogen fertilizer, the enhancement in the adsorption and retention of NH₄⁺/NH₃ in soil, and the promotion in the microbial consumption of NH₄⁺ in soil. Furthermore, a combined physical and chemical means, namely membrane/film-based mulching technology, for ammonia volatilization inhibition is also evaluated, which is capable of increasing the resistance of ammonia volatilization. Finally, the review addresses the challenges of mitigating agricultural ammonia emissions with the aim of providing an outlook for future research.

Effect of Biochar on Metal Distribution and Microbiome Dynamic of a Phytostabilized Metalloid-Contaminated Soil Following Freeze-Thaw Cycles

In the present paper the effectiveness of biochar-aided phytostabilization of metal/metalloid-contaminated soil under freezing-thawing conditions and using the metal tolerating test plant Lolium perenne L. is comprehensively studied. The vegetative experiment consisted of plants cultivated for over 52 days with no exposure to freezing-thawing in a glass greenhouse, followed by 64 days under freezing-thawing in a temperature-controlled apparatus and was carried out in initial soil derived from a post-industrial urban area, characterized by the higher total content of Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, As and Hg than the limit values included in the classification provided by the Regulation of the Polish Ministry of Environment. According to the substance priority list published by the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Agency, As, Pb, and Hg are also indicated as being among the top three most hazardous substances. The initial soil was modified by biochar obtained from willow chips. The freeze-thaw effect on the total content of metals/metalloids (metal(-loid)s) in plant materials (roots and above-ground parts) and in phytostabilized soils (non- and biochar-amended) as well as on metal(-loid) concentration distribution/redistribution between four BCR (community bureau of reference) fractions extracted from phytostabilized soils was determined. Based on metal(-loid)s redistribution in phytostabilized soils, their stability was evaluated using the reduced partition index (Ir). Special attention was paid to investigating soil microbial composition. In both cases, before and after freezing-thawing, biochar increased plant biomass, soil pH value, and metal(-loid)s accumulation in roots, and decreased metal(-loid)s accumulation in stems and total content in the soil, respectively, as compared to the corresponding non-amended series (before and after freezing-thawing, respectively). In particular, in the phytostabilized biochar-amended series after freezing-thawing, the recorded total content of Zn, Cu, Pb, and As in roots substantially increased as well as the Hg, Cu, Cr, and Zn in the soil was significantly reduced as compared to the corresponding non-amended series after freezing-thawing. Moreover, exposure to freezing-thawing itself caused redistribution of examined metal(-loid)s from mobile and/or potentially mobile into the most stable fraction, but this transformation was favored by biochar presence, especially for Cu, Pb, Cr, and Hg. While freezing-thawing greatly affected soil microbiome composition, biochar reduced the freeze-thaw adverse effect on bacterial diversity and helped preserve bacterial groups important for efficient soil nutrient conversion. In biochar-amended soil exposed to freezing-thawing, psychrotolerant and trace element-resistant genera such as Rhodococcus sp. or Williamsia sp. were most abundant.

Addition of walnut shells biochar to alkaline arable soil caused contradictory effects on CO2 and N2O emissions, nutrients availability, and enzymes activity

Mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions and improving soil health using biochar (BC) shall help achieving the UN-Sustainable Development Goals. The impacts of walnut shells biochar (WSB) pyrolyzed at different temperatures on CO₂ and N₂O emission and soil health have not been yet sufficiently explored. We investigated the effects of addition of WSB pyrolyzed at either 300 °C (WSB-300), 450 °C (WSB-450), or at 600 °C (WSB-600) to alkaline soil on CO₂ and N₂O emissions, nutrients availability, and soil enzymes activities in a 120-day incubation experiment. Cumulative N₂O emissions were reduced significantly as compared to the control, by 64.9%, 50.6%, and 36.4% after WSB-600, WSB-450 and WSB-300, respectively. However, the cumulative CO₂ emissions increased, over the control, as follows: WSB-600 (50.7%), WSB-450 (68.6%), and WSB-300 (73.4%). Biochar addition, particularly WSB-600 significantly increased soil pH (from 8.1 to 8.34), soil organic C (SOC; from 8.6 to 22.3 g kg^-1), available P (from 21.0 to 60.5 mg kg^-1), and K (181.0-480.5 mg kg^-1), and activities of urease, alkaline phosphatase, and invertase. However, an opposite pattern was observed with NH₄⁺, NO₃^-, total N and β-glucosidase activity after WSB application. The WBS produced from high temperature pyrolysis can be used for N₂O emissions mitigation and improvement of soil pH, SOC, available P and K, and activities of urease, alkaline, phosphatase. However, WBS produced from low temperature pyrolysis can be used to promote N availability and β-glucosidase; however, these findings should be verified under different field and climatic conditions.

Various quantification methods for estimating ammonia volatilization from wheat-maize cropping system

Ammonia volatilization (AV) dominates the pathway of nitrogen (N) fertilizer losses in crops throughout the world. However, different methods are highly responsible for the different measurements of AV. The existing techniques were separated into static chamber methods (SCM), dynamic chamber methods (DCM), calibrated Dräger-tube method (DTM) and micrometeorological methods (MMM), which were analyzed by a meta-study of 595 observations from 33 published studies. An exponential relationship (P < 0.01) was found between AV and the N fertilizer applied to wheat and maize using all the methods. The amount of AV using SCM was the lowest. The AV monitored by DCM was 24.5%-55.0% (wheat) and 46.9%-65.0% (maize) lower than that for the DTM. Additionally, the AV measured by DTM did not differ significantly in the wheat season but was 58.9% lower (P < 0.05) in the maize season than that in the MMM. To reveal the influencing factors responsible that were for DCM and DTM, a field experiment was conducted during the period of Oct. 2016 to Oct. 2017. The study indicated that the AV was 15.8%-28.3% (wheat, P < 0.05) and 36.7%-44.2% (maize, P < 0.05) lower when monitored by the DCM than when estimated by DTM. The concentration of soil NH4+-N, air temperature, and wind speed positively correlated with the NH3 fluxes. In addition, there was a significant linear correlation (P < 0.01) between the AV measured by DCM and DTM when the wind speed was <1.5 m s-1. This study highlighted the fact that wind speed was the main factor that caused the large difference between DCM and DTM. Herein, DTM or MMM was first recommended, and DCM was accepted when wind speed was <1.5 m s-1 for quantitative estimates of AV. However, only a straight comparison between DCM and DTM under the same field experiment was done, the other comparisons only being based on similar fertilization and environmental conditions. Consequently, the differences between methods have to be treated carefully.

Phytoattenuation of Cd, Pb, and Zn in a Slag-contaminated Soil Amended with Rice Straw Biochar and Grown with Energy Maize

Biochar has attracted interest due to its ability to improve soil fertility, soil carbon, and crop yield. Also, biochar can adsorb metals and render them less bioavailable. We investigated the soil availability, sequential extraction, and maize uptake of Cd, Pb, and Zn in a highly contaminated soil amended with rice straw biochar rates (0.0, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, and 30.0 Mg ha^-1). We hypothesized that biochar application to the soil cultivated with maize attenuates metal toxicity and mobility in slag-polluted soils near an abandoned Pb smelting plant in Brazil. Results showed that applying biochar increased the soil organic carbon, CEC, and P up to 27, 30, and 107, respectively. Plant accumulation of P and N was 104 and 32% higher than control, while aerial and root biomasses were increased by 18 and 23%. The sequential extraction showed that Pb and Zn in the original soil were retained mainly in residual fractions (94 and 87%, respectively), while Cd was mostly allocated in the organic fraction (47%). Biochar rates increased the proportion of Cd in the organic fraction to 85%, while Pb and Zn were redistributed mainly into iron oxides. The Cd, Pb, and Zn bioavailability assessed by DTPA decreased 32% in the biochar-amended soil, reducing plants' metal uptake. The maize biomass increase, metal soil bioavailability decrease, and low metal concentration in shoots driven by biochar indicate that phytoattenuation using rice straw biochar and maize cultivation could reduce risks to humans and the environment in the polluted sites of Santo Amaro.

Real-time on-site monitoring of soil ammonia emissions using membrane permeation-based sensing probe

An ability to real-time, continuously monitor soil ammonia emission profiles under diverse meteorological conditions with high temporal resolution in a simple and maintenance-free fashion can provide the urgently needed scientific insights to mitigate ammonia emission to the atmosphere and improve agricultural fertilization practice. Here, we report an open-chamber deployment unit embedded a gas-permeable membrane-based conductometric sensing probe (OC-GPMCP) capable of on-site continuously monitoring soil ammonia emission flux ( [Formula: see text] ) -time (t) profiles without the need for ongoing calibration. The developed OC-GPMCPs were deployed to a sugarcane field and a cattle farm under different fertilization/meteorological conditions to exemplify their real-world applicability for monitoring soil ammonia emission from agricultural land and livestock farm, respectively. The obtained [Formula: see text] - t profiles from the sugarcane field unveil that the ammonia emission rate is largely determined by fertilization methods and meteorological conditions. While the [Formula: see text] - t profiles from the cattle farm can be decisively correlated to various meteorological conditions. The reported OC-GPMCP is cheap to fabricate, easy to deploy, and maintenance-free to operate. These advantageous features make OC-GPMCP an effective analytical tool for large-scale soil ammonia emission assessment under diverse meteorological conditions, providing critically important scientific insights to mitigate ammonia emission into the atmosphere and improve agricultural fertilization practice.

Effects of fertilizer under different dripline spacings on summer maize in northern China

Maximizing grain yields with effective fertilization technologies and minimizing nitrogen losses is essential in agroecosystems. In this research, we conducted a two-year field experiment to explore whether dripline spacing and fertilization rate would affect maize grain yield. Two dripline spacings (i.e., one drip line per row of maize with a row space of 60 cm and one drip line per two rows of maize) and two fertilization rates (i.e., high fertilization level: N, 180 kg ha⁻¹; P₂O₅, 90 kg ha⁻¹; and K₂O, 90 kg ha⁻¹ and low level: N, 139.5 kg ha⁻¹; P₂O₅, 76.5 kg ha⁻¹; and K₂O, 76.5 kg ha⁻¹) were employed in this research. The results showed that maize yield was significantly affected by both dripline spacing and fertilization rate. The maize yield was 10.2% higher in the treatment with one drip line per two rows than that in the treatment with one drip line per row. Maize yield increased by 10.9% at the high fertilization level compared to that at the low fertilization level. The quantity of cumulative ammonia volatilization was reduced by 15.1% with one drip line per two rows compared to that with one drip line per row, whereas it increased by 26.9% at the high fertilization level compared with that at the low fertilization level. These results indicated that one drip line per two rows with a high fertilization rate increased the yield and could reduce the environmental burden, which may be economically beneficial and environmentally sound for maize fertigation for green agricultural development.

Biochar and fertilizer improved the growth and quality of the ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) shoots in a coastal soil of Yellow River Delta, China

Coastal soil is an important land reserve that may be used to alleviate the shortage of cultivated land; however, this soil is stressed by saline conditions and nutrient deficiency. Biochar offers the potential to reclaim coastal soil, but the response of plant growth to biochar addition in salt-affected soil is species-dependent. In this study, the response of ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.), an economically valuable halophyte that grows in the coastal soil of the Yellow River Delta, to wood chip biochar (WBC) either alone or in combination with chemical fertilizer was investigated using a 90-day pot experiment. The WBC enhanced the growth of ice plants in the coastal soil, but combining it with chemical fertilizer did not increase its effect. The nutritional quality of the plants was improved by the addition of WBC, regardless of whether chemical fertilizer was applied; moreover, WBC amendment enhanced photosynthesis and reduced the oxidative stress of the plants. The ameliorated soil properties (e.g., soil organic matter and water holding capacity) and increased contents of available macronutrients (e.g., P and K) and micronutrients (e.g., Mg, Mn, B and Zn) resulting from soil amendment with WBC may have contributed to the enhanced growth and quality of the ice plants. Additionally, in soil modified with WBC, an increased abundance of beneficial taxa (e.g., Erythrobacter, Sphingomonas and Lysobacter) and a shift in the microbial community may also have helped to improve the growth and quality of the ice plants. The results of our study provide useful information for developing a biochar-based technology to use in combination with valuable halophytes to reclaim degraded coastal soil and enhance food security.

Effects of rainfall intensity on runoff and nutrient loss of gently sloping farmland in a karst area of SW China

Nutrient losses from sloping farmland in karst areas lead to the decline in land productivity and nonpoint source pollution. A specially tailored steel channel with an adjustable slope and underground hole fissures was used to simulate the microenvironment of the "dual structure" of the surface and underground of sloping farmland in a karst area. The artificial rainfall simulation method was used to explore the surface and underground runoff characteristics and nutrient losses from sloping farmland under different rainfall intensities. The effect of rainfall intensity on the nutrient loss of farmland on karst sloping land was clarified. The results showed that the surface was the main route of runoff and nutrient loss during the rainy season on sloping farmland in karst areas. The influence of rainfall intensity on the nutrients in surface runoff was more substantial than that on underground runoff nutrients. Nutrient loss was more likely to occur underground than on the surface. The losses of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium in surface and underground runoff initially increased and then gradually stabilized with the extension of rainfall duration and increased with increasing rainfall intensity and the amount of nutrient runoff. The output of nutrients through surface runoff accounted for a high proportion of the total, and underground runoff was responsible for a low proportion. Although the amount of nutrients output by underground runoff was small, it could directly cause groundwater pollution. The research results provide a theoretical reference for controlling land source pollution from sloping farming in karst areas.

Effect of immobilizing reagents on soil Cd and Pb lability under freeze-thaw cycles: Implications for sustainable agricultural management in seasonally frozen land

Agricultural soil contamination in seasonally frozen land threatens food security. It is necessary to investigate the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on heavy metal bioavailability so as to select suitable immobilization agents. In this study, the soil was collected from a mid-latitude agricultural site in Liaoning Province, China, which was spiked with cadmium (Cd²⁺) and lead (Pb²⁺). Four immobilization treatments were set up, including (i) corn stover biochar, (ii) organic fertilizer, (iii) combined biochar and organic fertilizer, and (iv) the control group. The immobilized soils were subjected to 16 freeze-thaw cycles to temperatures of -10 °C, -20 °C, and -30 °C. It was found that freeze-thaw cycling increased the labile cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) content in the soil (i.e., exchangeable). The organic fertilizer treatment performed best in short-term immobilization, which was demonstrated by the amount of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable lead (Pb) being 17.3-53.3% lower than that of the other treatments, and 7.2-31.5% lower for cadmium (Cd). Biochar, on the other hand, displayed better long-term performance under freeze-thaw cycling. This is probably because the biochar's organic carbon content is relatively stable, and therefore, releases relatively little dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which could re-mobilize heavy metals. Furthermore, additional sorption sites are formed and the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups increased when biochar breaks down during freeze-thaw cycles. Overall, the joint application of biochar and organic fertilizer had the greatest immobilization effect, which inhibited the cracking of soil aggregates, reduced the labile metal content, and displayed both short- and long-term immobilization effectiveness. It is suggested that combined biochar and organic fertilizer may offer an effective strategy for the sustainable agricultural management of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contaminated in seasonally frozen land.
