Nighttime aeration mode enhanced the microalgae-bacteria symbiosis (ABS) system stability and pollutants removal efficiencies

Mechanistic insights into different illumination positions control algae production in anaerobic dynamic membrane filtration (AnDM) during decentralized wastewater treatment

Sunlight illumination has the potential to control the stability and sustainability of dynamic membrane (DM) systems. In this study, an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was combined with DM under different illumination positions (direct, indirect and no illumination) to treat wastewater. Results indicated that the UASB achieved a COD removal up to 87.05 % with an average methane production of 0.28 L/d. Following treatment by the UASB, it was found that under illumination, the removal of organic substances by DM exhibited poor performance due to algal proliferation. However, the DM systems demonstrated efficient removal of ammonia nitrogen, ranging from 96.21 % to 97.67 % after stabilization. Total phosphorus removal was 45.72 %, and membrane flux remained stable when directly illuminated. Conversely, the DM system subjected to indirect illumination showed unstable membrane flux and severe fouling resistance. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing illumination positions in DM systems under anaerobic conditions.

Insights of microalgal municipal wastewater treatment at low temperatures: Performance, microbiota patterns, and cold-adaptation of tubular and aeration column photobioreactors

In order to refine the treatment of microalgae consortium (MC) for municipal wastewater (MWW) during the winter, this study investigated the effectiveness of tubular and aeration column photobioreactors (TPBR and APBR) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) during winter by two start-up modes: microalgae/microalgae-activated sludge (AS). The operation results showed that under 5.7-13.1 °C, TPBR enhanced the assimilation of N and P pollutant by microalgal accumulation, meeting the Chinese discharge standard within 24 h (NH4+-N, TP, and COD ≤8.0, 0.5, and 50 mg·L-1). The microbial community profiles were identified and showed that inoculating AS under low-temperature still promoted bacterial interspecific association, but influenced by the inhibition of microbial diversity by the homogeneous circulation of TPBR, the nitrogen transfer function of MC was lower than that of APBR at low temperatures, except nitrogen fixation (K02588), nitrosification (K10944, K10945, and K10946), assimilatory nitrate reduction (K00366), and ammonification (K01915 and K05601). And the intermittent aeration in the APBR was still beneficial in increasing microbial diversity, which was more beneficial for reducing COD through microbial collaboration. In the treatment, the cryotolerant MGPM were Delftia, Romboutsia, Rhizobiales, and Bacillus, and the cold stress-related genes that were highly up-regulated were defense signaling molecules (K03671 and K00384), cold shock protein gene (K03704), and cellular protector (K01784) were present in both PBRs. This study provided a reference for the feasibility of the low temperature treatment of MC with the different types of PBR, which improved the application of wastewater treatment in more climatic environments.

The research progress, hotspots, challenges and outlooks of solid-phase denitrification process

Nitrogen pollution is one of the main reasons for water eutrophication. The difficulty of nitrogen removal in low-carbon wastewater poses a huge potential threat to the ecological environment and human health. As a clean biological nitrogen removal process, solid-phase denitrification (SPD) was proposed for long-term operation of low-carbon wastewater. In this paper, the progress, hotspots, and challenges of the SPD process based on different solid carbon sources (SCSs) are reviewed. Compared with synthetic SCS and natural SCS, blended SCSs have more application potential and have achieved pilot-scale application. Differences in SCSs will lead to changes in the enrichment of hydrolytic microorganisms and hydrolytic genes, which indirectly affect denitrification performance. Moreover, the denitrification performance of the SPD process is also affected by the physical and chemical properties of SCSs, pH of wastewater, hydraulic retention time, filling ratio, and temperature. In addition, the strengthening of the SPD process is an inevitable trend. The strengthening measures including SCSs modification and coupled electrochemical technology are regarded as the current research hotspots. It is worth noting that the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic has led to the increase of disinfection by-products and antibiotics in wastewater, which makes the SPD process face challenges. Finally, this review proposes prospects to provide a theoretical basis for promoting the efficient application of the SPD process and coping with the challenge of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Advanced insights on removal of antibiotics by microalgae-bacteria consortia: A state-of-the-art review and emerging prospects

Antibiotics abuse has triggered a growing environmental problem, posing a major threat to both ecosystem and human health. Unfortunately, there are still several shortcomings to current antibiotics removal technologies. Microalgae-bacteria consortia have been shown to be a promising antibiotics treatment technology owing to advantages of high antibiotics removal efficiency, low operational cost, and carbon emission reduction. This review aims to introduce the removal mechanisms, influencing factors, and future research perspectives for using microalgae-bacteria consortia to remove antibiotics. The interaction mechanisms between microalgae and bacteria are comprehensively revealed, and their exclusive advantages have been summarized in a "Trilogy" strategy, including "reinforced physical contact", "upgraded substance utilization along with antibiotics degradation", and "robust biological regulation". What's more, the relationship between different interaction mechanisms is emphatically analyzed. The important influencing factors, including concentration and classes of antibiotics, environmental conditions, and operational parameters, of antibiotics removal were also assessed. Three innovative treatment systems (microalgae-bacteria fuel cells (MBFCs), microalgae-bacteria membrane photobioreactors (MB-MPBRs), and microalgae-bacteria granular sludge (MBGS)) along with three advanced techniques (metabolic engineering, machine learning, and molecular docking and dynamics) are then introduced. In addition, concrete implementing schemes of the above advanced techniques are also provided. Finally, the current challenges and future research directions in using microalgae-bacteria consortia to remove antibiotics have been summarized. Overall, this review addresses the current state of microalgae-bacteria consortia for antibiotics treatment and provides corresponding recommendations for enhancing antibiotics removal efficiency.

Insights into activated sludge/Chlorella consortia under dark condition compared with light condition

Bacteria-algae consortia in the light bring the benefit of O₂ production and CO₂ reduction for wastewater treatment, while the bottleneck for application is how it behaves in the dark. In this study, inoculum ratio and sludge retention time (SRT) affected nutrient removal rather than chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. Dark conditions (with a sludge/Chlorella inoculum ratio of 1:2 at a SRT of 15 d) achieved comparable performance to those of light conditions, due to bacteria contribution and mechanical aeration. Compared with light conditions, the ratio of Chla/Chlb decreased and Caro/(Chla + Chlb) increased to response oxidative stress. In the dark, algae were associated with Nitrosomonas and Dechloromonas. Flavobacterium disassociated with Chlorella in the dark but associated with Chlorella in the light. Moreover, nitritation genes (amo and Hao) and denitrifying gene (narH) were up-regulated, while P metabolism genes (PPX and PPK) were down-regulated. It is proposed to enrich Nitrosomonas in the night and denitrify polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) in the daytime to establish short-cut nitrification and denitrifying phosphorus removal in practical applications.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for municipal wastewater treatment: From concept to practice

Recently, increasing interest has been placed in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in the journey towards the energy and carbon neutrality of municipal wastewater treatment. Different from aerobic granular sludge, the performance of MBGS is mainly determined by the mutualism and symbiosis between coexisting microalgae and bacteria. It appears from the literature that most of studies on MBGS were conducted at small benchtop scales under controlled conditions with synthetic wastewater. Therefore, this article attempts to look into the major engineering gaps between the knowledge generated from numerous laboratory research works and the large-scale application of MBGS, including massive production of MBGS, type of bioreactor, effect of alternate photo and dark metabolisms on effluent quality, resource recovery from waste MBGS, etc. It is clearly demonstrated that MBGS is still at its infant stage, and more effort is strongly needed to identify the technological bottlenecks of full-scale applications, while providing corresponding engineering solutions.

A review on co-culturing of microalgae: A greener strategy towards sustainable biofuels production

There is a growing global recognition that microalgae-based biofuel are environment-friendly and economically feasible options because they incur several advantages over traditional fossil fuels. Also, the microalgae can be manipulated for extraction of value-added compounds such as lipids (triacylglycerols), carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, pigments, antioxidants, various antimicrobial compounds, etc. Recently, there is an increasing focus on the co-cultivation practices of microalgae with other microorganisms to enhance biomass and lipid productivity. In a co-cultivation strategy, microalgae grow symbiotically with other heterotrophic microbes such as bacteria, yeast, fungi, and other algae/microalgae. They exchange nutrients and metabolites; this helps to increase the productivity, therefore facilitating the commercialization of microalgal-based fuel. Co-cultivation also facilitates biomass harvesting and waste valorization, thereby help to build an algal biorefinery platform for bioenergy production along with multivariate high value bioproducts and simultaneous waste bioremediation. This article comprehensively reviews various microalgae cultivation practices utilizing co-culture approaches with other algae, fungi, bacteria, and yeast. The review mainly focuses on the impact of several binary culture strategies on biomass and lipid yield. The advantages and challenges associated with the procedure along with their respective cultivation modes have also been presented and discussed in detail.

Convergent community structure of algal-bacterial consortia and its effects on advanced wastewater treatment and biomass production

Microalgal-bacterial consortium is an effective way to meet increasingly stringent standards in wastewater treatment. However, the mechanism of wastewater removal effect has not been properly explained in community structure by phycosphere. And little is known about that the concept of macroecology was introduced into phycosphere to explain the phenomenon. In the study, the algal-bacterial consortia with different ratios of algae and sludge were cultured in same aerobic wastewater within 48 h in photobioreactors (PSBRs). Community structure at start and end was texted by metagenomic analysis. Bray-Curtis similarities analysis based on microbial community showed that there was obvious convergent succession in all consortia, which is well known as "convergence" in macroecology. The result showed that Bray-Curtis similarities at End (overall above 0.88) were higher than these at Start (almost less than 0.66). In terms of community structure, the consortium with 5:1 ratio at Start are the more similar with the consortia at End by which the maximum removal of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN, 73.69%), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP, 94.40%) and NH3-N (93.26%) in wastewater treatment process and biomass production (98.2%) higher than other consortia, according with climax community in macroecology with the highest resource utilization than other communities. Therefore, the macroecology can be introduced into phycosphere to explain the consortium for advanced wastewater treatment and optimization community structure. And the study revealed a novel insight into treatment effect and community structure of algal-bacterial consortia for advanced wastewater treatment, a new idea for to shortening the culture time of consortium and optimize predicting their ecological community structure and predicting ecological community.
