Unexpected air quality impacts from implementation of green infrastructure in urban environments: A Kansas City case study

Opportunities and challenges in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI): A comprehensive and bibliometric review of ecosystem services from 2000 to 2021

The great challenges induced by global climate change coupled with rapid urbanization underline the growing urgency for a change in stormwater management with a novel integrated approach. This study conducted a comprehensive review on state-of-the-art knowledge in the research field of green storm infrastructure (GSI) using bibliometric analysis. A corpus of 3988 GSI-related publications (2000-2021) extracted from the Web of Science database was used to evaluate the scientific output in GSI research through the "Bibliometrix" R package and "CiteSpace". Ever since 2010, the number of publications per year exhibited an exponential increase, with the annual publication growth rate of 28.61%. Notably, the United States (23.55%) and China (19.58%) contributed most in GSI publications. "Water" (306) was identified as the most relevant journal in GIS research field, followed by "Sustainability" (252) and "Science of the Total Environment" (200). Cluster analysis unveiled the predominant research themes, i.e., "Conceptual development of GSI" (69.25%), "Adaptation of GSI" (46.89%), and "Performance evaluation of GSI practices" (18.28%). Research foci have generally shifted from conventional engineering-based frameworks (e.g., reduce stormwater runoff and enhance water quality) to ecological-based multi-elements (e.g., preserve natural resources, augment urban biodiversity and optimize land-use patterns). This systematic review concludes trends, challenges and future research prospects of GSI, and aims to provide reference and guidance for decision-makers on the development of a more dynamic, resilient, and robust integrated GSI approach for sustainable urban stormwater management.

Geohealth Policy Benefits Are Mediated by Interacting Natural, Engineered, and Social Processes

Interest in health implications of Earth science research has significantly increased. Articles frequently dispense policy advice, for example, to reduce human contaminant exposures. Recommendations such as fish consumption advisories rarely reflect causal reasoning around tradeoffs or anticipate how scientific information will be received and processed by the media or vulnerable communities. Health is the product of interacting social and physical processes, yet predictable responses are often overlooked. Analysis of physical and social mechanisms, and health and non-health tradeoffs, is needed to achieve policy benefits rather than "policy impact." Dedicated funding mechanisms would improve the quality and availability of these analyses.

Spatio-temporal evolution characteristics analysis and optimization prediction of urban green infrastructure: a case study of Beijing, China

The reasonable layout of green infrastructure is conducive to the low-carbon, livable and high-quality sustainable development of cities. The framework of spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and prediction analysis of Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) was constructed by integrating morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and CA-Markov in the study. We analyzed the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of UGI in Beijing from 1990 to 2019, predicted its future change trend in 2030, and put forward the optimization scheme for the ecological network of UGI. The area change of UGI presented a "V" shape from 1990 to 2019 in Beijing, and the turning point was around 2009. Its spatial distribution revealed a significant heterogeneity. The comprehensive change rate index showed a "rising and then falling" trend from 1990 to 2019. Core with an area of over 1000 km2 had inclined "C" shape, connecting the north, west and south of the study area. Among the three prediction scenarios for 2030, the area of UGI under the ecological conservation priority scenario is the largest, accounting for 86.35% of the total area. The area of UGI under the economic development priority scenario is the smallest, accounting for 76.85%. The optimization of zoning and road network are effective measures to improve the connectivity of UGI in Beijing. This study is beneficial to extend the research ideas of UGI and promote sustainable urban development.

Regional Differences, Distribution Dynamics, and Convergence of Air Quality in Urban Agglomerations in China

The urban agglomeration (UA), with a high concentration of population and economy, represents an area with grievous air pollution. It is vital to examine the regional differences, distribution dynamics, and air quality convergence in UAs for sustainable development. In this study, we measured the air quality of ten UAs in China through the Air Quality Index (AQI). We analyzed regional differences, distribution dynamics, and convergence using Dagum’s decomposition of the Gini coefficient, kernel density estimation, and the convergence model. We found that: the AQI of China’s UAs shows a downward trend, and the index is higher in northern UAs than in southern UAs; the differences in air quality within UAs are not significant, but there is a gap between them; the overall difference in air quality tends to decrease, and regional differences in air quality are the primary contributor to the overall difference; the overall distribution and the distribution of each UA move rightward; the distribution pattern, ductility, and polarization characteristics are different, indicating that the air quality has improved and is differentiated between UAs; except for the Guanzhong Plain, the overall UA and each UA have obvious σ convergence characteristics, and each UA presents prominent absolute β convergence, conditional β convergence, and club convergence.

Increasing Green Infrastructure in Cities: Impact on Ambient Temperature, Air Quality and Heat-Related Mortality and Morbidity

Urban vegetation provides undeniable benefits to urban climate, health, thermal comfort and environmental quality of cities and represents one of the most considered urban heat mitigation measures. Despite the plethora of available scientific information, very little is known about the holistic and global impact of a potential increase of urban green infrastructure (GI) on urban climate, environmental quality and health, and their synergies and trade-offs. There is a need to evaluate globally the extent to which additional GI provides benefits and quantify the problems arising from the deployment of additional greenery in cities which are usually overlooked or neglected. The present paper has reviewed and analysed 55 fully evaluated scenarios and case studies investigating the impact of additional GI on urban temperature, air pollution and health for 39 cities. Statistically significant correlations between the percentage increase of the urban GI and the peak daily and night ambient temperatures are obtained. The average maximum peak daily and night-time temperature drop may not exceed 1.8 and 2.3 °C respectively, even for a maximum GI fraction. In parallel, a statistically significant correlation between the peak daily temperature decrease caused by higher GI fractions and heat-related mortality is found. When the peak daily temperature drops by 0.1 °C, then the percentage of heat-related mortality decreases on average by 3.0% The impact of additional urban GI on the concentration of urban pollutants is analysed, and the main parameters contributing to decrease or increase of the pollutants’ concentration are presented.
