Effect of irrigation water system's distribution on rice cadmium accumulation in large mild cadmium contaminated paddy field areas of Southwest China

Interspecific variations in growth, physiology and Cd accumulation between Populus deltoides and P. × canadensis in response to Cd pollution under two soil types

Both acid and alkaline purple soils in China are increasingly affected by Cd contamination. The selection of fast-growing trees suitable for remediating different soil types is urgent, yet there is a severe lack of relevant knowledge. In this study, we conducted a controlled pot experiment to compare the growth, physiology, and Cd accumulation efficiency of two widely recognized poplar species, namely Populus deltoides and P. × canadensis, under Cd contamination (1 mg kg-1) in acid and alkaline purple soils. The objective was to determine which poplar species is best suited for remediating different soil types. Our findings are as follows: (1) the total biomass of both poplars remained largely unaffected by Cd pollution in both soil types. Notably, under Cd pollution, the total biomass of P. deltoides in acid purple soil was 1.53 times greater than that in alkaline purple soil. (2) Cd pollution did not significantly induce oxidative damage in the leaves of either poplar species in both soil types. However, in acid purple soil, Cd contamination led to a 21% increase in NO3- concentration and a 44% increase in NH4+ concentration in P. × canadensis leaves, whereas in alkaline purple soil, it led to a 59% increase in NH4+ concentration in P. deltoides leaves. (3) Cd concentrations in all root orders of P. × canadensis were significantly higher than those in P. deltoides, especially in the first three root orders, under alkaline purple soil. The total Cd accumulation by P. × canadensis in Cd-polluted alkaline purple soil was 2.18 times higher than that in Cd-polluted acid purple soil, a difference not observed in P. deltoides. (4) redundancy analysis indicated that the sequestration effect of higher soil organic matter on Cd availability in acid purple soil was more pronounced than the release effects caused by lower pH. In conclusion, P. × canadensis is better suited for remediating alkaline purple soil due to its higher capacity for Cd uptake, while P. deltoides is more suitable for remediating Cd-contaminated acid purple soil due to its better growth conditions and greater Cd enrichment capability.

Stable Isotope Ratios Trace the Rice Uptake of Cadmium from Atmospheric Deposition via Leaves and Roots

Cadmium (Cd) stable isotopes provide a novel technique to investigate the fate of Cd in the environment, but challenges exist for tracing the sources in the plants. We performed individual rice leaf and root exposures to dry and wet deposition using customized open-top chambers (OTCs) in the greenhouse and in the field next to a smelter, respectively. The field experiment also included a control without Cd deposition and a "full" treatment. The exposure experiments and isotope signatures showed that leaves can directly take up atmospheric Cd and then translocate within rice plants to other tissues, contributing 52-70% of Cd in grains, which exceeded the contribution (30-48%) by root exposure. The Cd isotopes in leaves, nodes, internodes, and grains demonstrate that roots preferentially take up Cd from wet deposition, but leaves favor uptake of Cd from dry deposition. The Cd uptake by leaves is redistributed via nodes, allowing for upward transport to the grains but preventing downward transport to the roots. Leaves favor uptake of heavy isotopes from atmospheric deposition (ΔCd114/110Leaf-Dust: 0.10 ± 0.02‰) but retain light isotopes and transport heavy isotopes to the nodes and further to grains. These findings highlight the contribution of atmospheric deposition to rice and Cd isotopes as a useful tracer for quantifying sources in plants when different isotopic compositions are in sources.

Selenium improves the medicinal safety and quality of Bletilla striata by promoting the fixation of cadmium in root: Pot and field experiments

Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a considerable threat to the safe production of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China. The tubers of Bletilla striata, a precious TCM, are widely used to treat various ailments. However, the medicinal safety and quality of tubers are significantly affected by high Cd accumulation. While selenium (Se) is known to reduce Cd concentration in traditional crops, its impact on Cd content in medicinal parts and overall quality remains underexplored. To bridge the gap, a pot experiment and field validation were conducted to determine the effectiveness of foliar Se application. The results revealed that Se effectively counteracted Cd damage. Compared to Cd treatment alone, Se at 1.5 mg L-1 significantly decreased Cd content by 46.33 %, increased the biomass by 21.48 %, and raised the total phenolic, flavonoid, saponin, and polysaccharide contents by 46.31 %, 30.46 %, 27.08 %, and 29.01 %, respectively, in tubers. Furthermore, this study explored the mechanism of Se action. Se facilitated Cd accumulation in root cell walls and soluble fractions, enhanced the synthesis of phytochelatins (PC), and stored them in the form of PC-Cd complexes. These findings have profound implications for the cultivation of TCM, ensuring its safety, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Research trends and frontiers on source appointment of soil heavy metal: a scientometric review (2000-2020)

In recent years, source appointment of soil heavy metal has attracted growing attention. However, few studies have attempted to make a comprehensive and systematical review on this topic. For this reason, a total of 1051 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) database between 2000 and 2020. A scientometric analysis was carried out to reveal the characteristics of publications, research power, and research hotspots. CiteSpace was used to visualize and summarize the information about the development in this field. The results showed that (1) the number of publications in source appointment of soil heavy metal had increased rapidly; Environmental science and ecology and environmental sciences were top 2 most popular subject categories; (2) Research power was mainly distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America. China and Chinese Academy of Sciences were the most productive country and institution in terms of publications in this field. Biao Huang (China) was the most productive author. However, Hakanson L (Sweden) was the most influential author in terms of citation frequency; (3) Heavy metal, source identification, and contamination were the most frequent keywords. Keyword clustering analysis showed that the research hotspots mainly concentrated on air pollution, bioremediation, spatial distribution, soil, PCA, and so on; (4) Keyword bursts analysis showed that the research frontiers mainly focused on spatial analysis of soil heavy metal and exposure risk to human health.

Foliar application of anthocyanin extract regulates cadmium accumulation and distribution in rice (Oryza sativa L.) at tillering and booting stages

Anthocyanin extract has been applied in agricultural production and enhanced tolerance of plants to adverse effects of Cd stress. Rice was subjected to different concentration of Cd and blueberry anthocyanin, and the effects on rice growth, antioxidative defense, Cd distribution in rice tissues, FTIR and TEM characterization of rice leaves were examined to explain the Cd reductions in rice grains and the protective mechanisms by blueberry anthocyanin. Foliar spray of blueberry anthocyanin at tillering and booting stages was effective for reducing Cd concentration in rice grains and increasing the rice yield, anthocyanin and Cd concentration of rice leaves under 1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg Cd stress. The Cd concentration in rice grains was less than the China national standard of Cd for rice grains (0.2 mg/kg) after surface spraying by 5.0-12.5 g/L blueberry anthocyanin under 1.0 mg/kg Cd stress, while 7.5 g/L spray concentration was the best choice. Blueberry anthocyanin spraying prevents Cd from being transferred from leaves to rice grains mainly by fixation of Cd in soluble and organelle fractions at the tillering and booting stages, and reduces H2O2 and MDA accumulation in rice leaves to decrease Cd toxicity. Combined with FTIR and TEM characterization of rice leaves, the results indicated that surface spraying of 7.5 g/L blueberry anthocyanin under 1.0 mg/kg Cd stress could effectively relieve Cd oxidative damage, and form chelates with Cd ions to immobilize Cd in rice leaves. Hence, blueberry anthocyanin could be used as a foliar resistance control agent to reduce Cd accumulation in rice grains through chelate compound synthesis and decrease Cd toxicity by preventing membrane lipid peroxidation and H2O2 accumulation.

Gestational cadmium exposure impairs placental angiogenesis via activating GC/GR signaling

Gestational exposure to environmental Cd caused placental angiogenesis impairment and fetal growth restriction (FGR). However, its mechanism remained unclear. This study was to investigate the effects of Cd exposure during pregnancy on placental angiogenesis and its mechanism. Pregnant mice were exposed to CdCl2 (4.5 mg/kg) on gestational day (GD) 8 with or without melatonin (MT) (5.0 mg/kg), an anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress agent, from GD7 to GD15. Human primary placental trophoblasts and JEG-3 cells were stimulated using CdCl2 (20 μM) after MT (1 mM) preprocessing. We firstly found MT treatment obviously mitigated environmental Cd-induced placental angiogenesis disorder and reduction of the VEGF-A level. Mechanistically, MT reversed environmental Cd-downregulated the protein expression of VEGF-A via inhibiting glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activation. Notably, our data showed MT treatment antagonized Cd-activated GC/GR signaling via blocking PERK signaling and thereby upregulated VEGF-A and 11β-HSD2 protein expression. Based upon the population case-control study, the levels of VEGF-A and 11β-HSD2 protein in small-for-gestational-age placentae were significantly reduced when compared to appropriate-for-gestational-age placentae. Overall, environmental Cd exposure during gestation impaired placental angiogenesis via PERK-regulated GC/GR signaling in placental trophoblasts. Our findings will provide a basis for prevention and treatment of placental impairments and fetal growth restriction caused by environment toxicants in future.
