Is sustainable extensive green roof realizable without irrigation in a temperate monsoonal climate? A case study in Beijing

Study on spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics of precipitation and causes of waterlogging based on a data-driven framework

The discernible alterations in regional precipitation patterns, influenced by the intersecting factors of urbanization and climate change, exert a substantial impact on urban flood disasters. Based on multi-source precipitation data, a data-driven model fusion framework was constructed to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamic distribution characteristics of precipitation in Beijing. Wavelet analysis method was used to reveal the periodic variation characteristics and multi-scale effects of precipitation, and the machine learning method was used to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamic change pattern of precipitation. Finally, geographical detector was used to explore the causes of waterlogging in Beijing. The research outcomes reveal a disparate distribution of precipitation across the year, with 78 % of the total precipitation occurring during the flood season. The principal periodic cycles observed in annual cumulative precipitation (ACP) were identified at 21, 13, and 9-year intervals. Spatially, while a decreasing trend in precipitation was observed in most areas of Beijing, 63.4 % of the region exhibited an escalating concentration trend, thereby heightening the risk of urban waterlogging. Machine learning model clustering elucidated three predominant spatial dynamic distribution patterns of precipitation in Beijing. The utilization of web crawler technology to acquire water accumulation data addressed challenges in obtaining urban waterlogging data, and validation through Landsat8 images enhanced data reliability and authenticity. Factor detection shows that road network density, topography, and precipitation were the main factors affecting urban waterlogging. These findings hold significant implications for informing flood control strategies and emergency management protocols in urban areas across China.

Assessment of green roofs' potential to improve the urban thermal environment: The case of Beijing

Against the backdrop of global warming, rapid urbanization has caused the aggregation of urban building spaces and the heat island effect is becoming increasingly serious, hindering sustainable urban development. In order to investigate the potential and methods of green roofs in different types of neighborhoods to mitigate the urban heat island effect, this study used multivariate data for surface temperature inversion and local climate zone (LCZ), and the potential of green roofs to reduce the heat island effect was evaluated by combining LCZ zoning and ENVI-met prediction model. Finally, a multi-scenario analysis with economic factors was conducted to derive the optimal implementation path for green roofs. The results show that in LCZs 1-9, the green roof can reduce the daytime average air temperature by a maximum of 0.41 °C for 0.5 m of the LCZ8 roof and 0.37 °C for 1.2 m of the LCZ6 pedestrian. Based on the surface cooling efficiency of LCZ green roofs get the best green roof construction order: LCZ3, LCZ6, LCZ8 > LCZ2, LCZ5, LCZ7 > LCZ1, LCZ4, LCZ9. The construction of green roofs for the heat island areas within the fifth ring road of Beijing can reduce the area of high-temperature and sub-high-temperature zones by 52.55% and 29.17%, respectively, compared with the area without green roof construction. The study clarifies the technical methodology system of cooling efficiency of green roofs in different types of neighborhoods and the reduction of the urban-scale heat island effect, which provides a reference for the planning of green roofs for urban buildings.

Research and development of green roofs and green walls in Mexico: A review

The residential sector is one of the primary energy consumers and emitters of greenhouse gases. Given the environmental problem, one of the methods of mitigating electricity consumption and reducing the temperature in buildings is green infrastructure: green roofs and walls. This article presents a compilation of the studies carried out in México about green infrastructure; the energy, thermal and environmental benefits obtained were analyzed according to the vegetation, substrate, climate, and systems configuration. In addition, the development of policies, laws, regulations, and incentives in the field of green roofs in Mexico was also analyzed. The results indicate that using green infrastructure can help mitigate greenhouse gases since a green roof can reduce the indoor temperature up to 19.9 °C, save 28 % annually in electricity consumption and remove 80 % of rainwater pollutants. Finally, the results of this research can provide insight for researchers, legislators, and urban planners about the state in which Mexico is located, as well as help in decision-making.

Sustainable green roofs: a comprehensive review of influential factors

Green roofs have gained much attention as a modern roofing surface due to their potential to deliver many environmental and social benefits. Studies have indicated that different GR designs deliver different ecosystem services, and there are important factors that affect GR performance. This article reviewed significant factors that influence GR performance and sustainability. Substrate and drainage layer material choice significantly affects stormwater retention potential, leachate quality, plant survival, and determines GR environmental footprints. Subsequently, type of plants, their form, and kinds used on GRs impact GR ecosystem function. Leaf area is the most studied trait due to its influence on the cooling potential and energy performance. In order to achieve a sustainable GR, it is essential to select the type of plants that have a high survival rate. Perennial herbs, particularly forbs and grass as dominant groups, are heat and drought tolerant, which make them suitable in GR experiment. Furthermore, selecting a suitable irrigation system is as important as two other factors for having a sustainable GR. Irrigation is essential for plant survival, and due to the current pressure on valuable water sources, it is important to select a sustainable irrigation system. This review presents three sustainable irrigation methods: (i) employing alternative water sources such as rainwater, greywater, and atmospheric water; (ii) smart irrigation and monitoring; and (iii) using adaptive materials and additives that improve GR water use. This review sheds new insights on the design of high-performance, sustainable GRs and provides guidance for the legislation of sustainable GR.

Greening the city: Thriving for biodiversity and sustainability

Urban population and urbanisation are increasing rapidly, mainly in developing countries, usually at the expense of green and blue areas. This trend will decrease the ecosystems' capacity to supply ecosystem services (ES) and threaten human wellbeing. Therefore, it is key to establish greening policies in urbanising areas, which are essential to improve the liveability of cities. Restoring and developing green and blue infrastructures using nature-based solutions is vital to improving urban biodiversity and urban ecosystems. Healthy urban ecosystems have a high capacity to supply regulating (e.g., air, noise, climate and water regulation), provisioning (e.g., food, medicinal plants, biomass) and cultural (e.g., recreation, landscape aesthetics, social cohesion) ES. This multifunctionality can provide diverse environmental, social and economic benefits to urban residents, hence contributing to the sustainability of urban areas. However, urban green and blue areas are also associated with ecosystem disservices (e.g., plant allergies or poisoning, emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds, unpleasant smells), tradeoffs (e.g., increased water consumption, wildfire risk, associated management costs) and implementation barriers (e.g., political motivation, lack of knowledge, time and workload). Overall, the SI published 8 articles from different parts of the world, such as China, the USA, Italy or Spain, focused on important aspects of greening the city (e.g., green roofs, green walls, green infrastructures, sustainable mobility).

Water need and water use efficiency of two plant species in soil-containing and soilless substrates under green roof conditions

Despite the significance of urban landscapes, there are limiting factors like spaces and water resources to expand them across the world. These limitations necessitate the development of water-conserving strategies in vertical infrastructures such as green roofs. One water-conserving strategy is precise irrigation regimes based on the plant species' water needs. We investigated the water need of Carpobrotus edulis and Aptenia cordifolia under treatments with different soil-containing and soil-less water-absorbing substrate amenders and humic acid applications. The experiment was factorial based on a randomized complete block design with three replications and was conducted from May to September 2020. The first factor was the substrates with different green roof substrate compositions including soil-containing and soilless substrates with varying bentonite percentages. The second factor was humic acid levels (zero, 100, and 200 mg/l), which were applied as fertigation every 15 days during the experiment. Water needs were determined using the lysimetric method. The results showed that despite the soil-containing substrate with bentonite, the soilless substrate alone could not lead to optimal plant growth. The highest water use efficiency and the least evapotranspiration were obtained from the substrate containing 20%Soil +20% leca +20% perlite +20% mineral pumice +20% leaf litter plus 12% w bentonite, combined with A. cordifolia. This plant species showed a better performance compared with C. edulis. During the spring and summer months, the soil-containing substrate with bentonite and A. cordifolia can create a sustainable green roof system by creating better coverage, more water conservation, and a more aesthetic appearance. Based on the results, the application of the highest concentration level of humic acid (200 mg/l) increased the water use efficiency by about 40% after the establishment of the plants. Also, using this level of humic acid reduced the evapotranspiration rate in A. cordifolia up to 10 ml/day and in C. edulis up to 15 ml/day.

Stormwater retention and detention performance of green roofs with different substrates: Observational data and hydrological simulations

Green roofs are widely considered as a promising nature-based solution for urban stormwater management. In this study, the stormwater retention and detention performance of 6 green roof modules with different types and depth of substrates at Beijing, China was investigated through 3-year continuous monitoring. The Hydrus-1D was applied to further explore the stormwater management performance of green roofs under extreme storms. The average event-based stormwater retention and detention rates of the green roofs with 10 cm substrates ranged between 81% and 87%, and 83%-87%, respectively; and the average time delays in runoff generation and peak discharge ranged between 82 and 210 min, and 63-131 min, respectively. Green roofs with 15 cm depth of substrates offered higher stormwater retention and peak runoff attenuation rates than those with 10 cm substrates. However, due to the high frequency (55 out of total 92) of light rainfall events (<10 mm) and short antecedent dry weather periods (3.8 days in average), no significant difference was found on stormwater control performance of those green roofs. The Hydrus-1D simulations revealed that green roof stormwater retention rate decreases exponentially with return periods of extreme storms but increases with substrate depth. There exists a critical depth of substrates and further increases in substrate depth beyond this critical value could not bring much improvement in stormwater retention performance of green roofs. The application of extensive green roofs with 10-15 cm substrates provides promising stormwater retention and detention performance in highly urbanized area of Beijing.
