How to cope in heterogeneous coastal environments: Spatio-temporally endogenous circadian rhythm of valve gaping by mussels

Bivalve shell growth from molecular to sclerochronological scale: Environment and intrinsic factors control increment deposition

Biomineralisation of bivalve shells raises questions at the level of genes to the final calcified product. For the first time, gene expression has been studied in association with growth increment deposition in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. A short-term experiment highlighted that biomineralisation genes exhibit a rhythm of expression consistent with the observed tidal increment formation. Long-term mark-recapture experiments were conducted in three Mediterranean environments and revealed that the mussel shells harbour complex incrementation regimes, consisting of daily, tidal and a mixed periodicity of ∼1.7 growth increment.d-1 formed. The latter is likely related to the local tidal regime, although the mussels were continuously submerged and exposed to a small tidal range. The pattern of growth increments shifted from mixed to daily in Mediterranean lagoon, and to tidal at sea, probably linked to biological clocks. Based on our results and the literature, a hypothetical model for mussel shell increment formation in various habitats is proposed.

In situ habitat clearance rates and particle size preference of indigenous Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida) and non-native Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas) in North American Pacific coast estuaries

The Olympia oyster, Ostrea lurida, is the target of many restoration projects along estuaries on the North American Pacific coast, while the non-native Pacific oyster, Magallana gigas, dominates oyster aquaculture globally. Both species provide filtration functions that were investigated in three California bays using a whole-habitat, in situ approach, a laboratory particle selection experiment, and a regional physiological comparison. Measurements of chlorophyll α, temperature, salinity, and turbidity upstream and downstream, as well as point samples of seston total particulate matter and organic content to estimate habitat clearance rates (HCR, L hr-1 m-2) were collected. From February 2018 to June 2019, twenty-two trials were conducted across four sites. HCRs were highly variable within and among sites, ranging from site averages of -464 to 166 L hr-1 m-2, and not significantly different among sites, indicating field filtration performance of O. lurida habitat and M. gigas aquaculture is similar. Using a random forest regression, site was the most important predictor of HCR, with a variable importance score of 25.7 % (SD = 4.6 %). O. lurida and M. gigas had significantly different particle size selection preferences, likely affecting the quality of their filtration. This study's findings suggest that restoring O. lurida habitat may provide similar filtration benefits as M. gigas aquaculture, but the unique hydrodynamics and food quality of individual bays, as well as regional differences in filter feeder communities, must be considered in managing oyster habitat for filtration functions.

The effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on the gaping activity and feeding of mussels

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) is a common environmental pollutant which affects >22 % of the world's coastlines. However, the impact of ALAN wavelengths on coastal organisms is under-investigated. Here, we tested the impact of red, green, and white ALAN on the gaping activity and phytoplankton consumption of Mytilus edulis mussels and compared these to dark night. Mussels exhibited a semi-diel activity pattern. Although ALAN did not significantly affect the time open nor the phytoplankton consumption, it did have a colour-specific effect on the gaping frequency with red and white ALAN resulting in lower activity compared to the dark night. Green ALAN caused higher gaping frequency and a negative relationship between consumption and proportion of time open compared to the other treatments. Our findings suggest colour-specific ALAN effects on mussels and call for further investigation on the associated physiological mechanisms and potential ecological consequences.
