Effects of inorganic particles and their interactions with biofilms on dynamic membrane structure and long-term filtration performance

Correlation of structural extracellular polymeric substances in the mesh biofilms with solids retention time and biofilm hydraulic resistance in dynamic membrane bioreactors

Dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR), which mainly relied on the in-situ formed biofilms on support materials with large aperture (e.g., nylon mesh) to separate fine particles in wastewater, has attracted a lot of attentions due to low cost. The filtration performance of DMBR is mainly determined by the structure and hydraulic resistance of biofilms formed on the mesh. Therefore, understanding the correlation of operation conditions with mesh biofilm compositions and permeability are critically important for optimizing DMBR operation. In present study, how structural extracellular polymeric substances, including alginate-like extracellular polysaccharide (ALE) and amyloid-like protein (AP), in mesh biofilms correlate to solids retention time (SRT) and biofilm structures was explored in DMBRs. At 5d-SRT, compact and gel-like mesh biofilms were formed with a high specific filtration resistance (SFR) of 459 × 10⁹ m/g, while at 40d-SRT porous mesh biofilms were developed with a low SFR of 24 × 10⁹ m/g. Consequently, the 5d-SRT MBR experienced more rapid rise in transmembrane pressure. Further studies found that the 5d-SRT mesh biofilms had a higher AP content, which was positively correlated to biofilm hydraulic resistance. On the contrary, the 40d-SRT mesh biofilms contained a higher content of ALE, suggesting that ALE was negatively correlated to biofilm hydraulic resistance. Therefore, AP instead of ALE likely played a more important role in the formation of compact and gel-like mesh biofilms.

Gravity-driven high flux filtration behavior and microbial community of an integrated granular activated carbon and dynamic membrane bioreactor for domestic wastewater treatment

A gravity-driven dynamic membrane bioreactors (DMBR) with GAC addition (G-DMBR) was operated under constant pressure filtration mode (using 20 cm water head) for real domestic wastewater treatment. During the stable operation period, the treatment performance, DM filtration behavior and mechanism as well as microbial properties were studied and compared with a control DMBR (C-DMBR). Both DMBRs showed stable removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia (NH₄⁺-N) with average removal rates over 88% and 98%, respectively. GAC addition effectively enhanced dynamic membrane (DM) permeability with a stable flux of 17 to 65 L/m²h, which was approximately four times higher than that in the C-DMBR without GAC addition. Filtration resistance analysis indicated the DM formation can be divided to three stages: the formation of the initial DM layer, the development of mature DM layer and dynamic equilibrium stage of the DM layer. Filtration model analysis illustrated that added GAC could be the skeleton of the DM, resulting in a more porous and incompressible DM layer. Additionally, microbial community analysis revealed that in the G-DMBR several fouling-causing phyla including Proteobacteria reduced while other phyla preferring attached growth such as Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes increased. Thus, adding GAC to the DMBR can be an effective strategy for achieving stable and high-flux operation by modifying DM properties and regulating DM formation process and structure.

Dynamic Membranes for Enhancing Resources Recovery from Municipal Wastewater

This paper studied the feasibility of using dynamic membranes (DMs) to treat municipal wastewater (MWW). Effluent from the primary settler of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant was treated using a flat 1 µm pore size open monofilament polyamide woven mesh as supporting material. Two supporting material layers were required to self-form a DM in the short-term (17 days of operation). Different strategies (increasing the filtration flux, increasing the concentration of operating solids and coagulant dosing) were used to enhance the required forming time and pollutant capture efficiency. Higher permeate flux and increased solids were shown to be ineffective while coagulant dosing showed improvements in both the required DM forming time and permeate quality. When coagulant was dosed (10 mg L⁻¹) a DM forming time of 7 days and a permeate quality of total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorous and turbidity of 24 mg L⁻¹, 58 mg L⁻¹, 38.1 mg L⁻¹, 1.2 mg L⁻¹ and 22 NTU, respectively, was achieved. Preliminary energy and economic balances determined that energy recoveries from 0.032 to 0.121 kWh per m³ of treated water at a cost between €0.002 to €0.003 per m³ of treated water can be obtained from the particulate material recovered in the DM.
