Concentration factors and biological half-lives for the dynamic modelling of radionuclide transfers to marine biota in the English Channel

A deuterium tracer experiment for simulating accumulation and elimination of organically bound tritium in an edible flatfish, olive flounder

Tritium (3H, T) is discharged by nuclear facilities into coastal oceans as tritiated water (HTO). When the concentration of HTO in seawater increases, the accumulation of organically bound tritium (OBT) in edible fish becomes a concern because of its longer residence time than HTO. To evaluate the accumulation potential of OBT in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), a commercially important edible fish in northeast Asia, we experimentally exposed the fish to seawater enriched with deuterium (2H, D) as a substitute for tritium. Progressive increases and decreases in the concentration of organically bound deuterium (OBD) were observed in the edible part (i.e., muscle) of the fish during the period of exposure to 2H (161 days) and the subsequent period of elimination of OBD (196 days). The measured concentration of OBD was analyzed using a newly developed single-compartment model to describe the metabolism of OBD in muscle via the following three transfer pathways: formation of OBD from 2H in water, elimination of OBD by catabolism, and ingestion of feed with natural abundance of OBD. The model estimates were in good agreement with the measured muscle OBD concentrations. The formation and elimination rate constants for OBD in the muscle were estimated by fitting our model to the measured data. The biological half-life of OBT in the muscle, estimated from the elimination rate constant, was 133 days, which was far longer than that of HTO in the free water of the muscle. Our model facilitates the estimation of OBT accumulation potential in olive flounder inhabiting coastal areas near nuclear facilities, and thus, will help to assess the radiation dose that humans are exposed to from ingesting seafood.

Radionuclide contents in sediment and seafood from Makoko Lagoon, Lagos State, Nigeria

Sediment and seafood samples were collected from Makoko Lagoon, Lagos state, Nigeria. Gamma-ray spectrometry was used to determine the activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K, ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th in the samples. The average activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K, ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th in the sediment were 41.04 ± 6.41, 10.15 ± 3.19 and 4.39 ± 2.10 Bq kg^-1, respectively, while the annual effective dose was 0.01 mSv/year. In seafood, the average activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K, ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th were 15.66 ± 8.07, 1.72 ± 1.51 and 1.93 ± 0.30 Bq kg^-1, respectively. The cumulative effective ingestion dose obtained ranged from 0.016 μSv/year (giant prawn) to 1.08 μSv/year (Parrotgrunt). The mean activity concentrations and absorbed dose rate in sediment were below the worldwide average values. The cumulative dose from the ingestion of seafood was also significantly low. Sediment and seafood from the lagoon in Makoko pose no health risk from a radiological point of view to the population.

Iodine uptake in brown seaweed exposed to radioactive liquid discharges from the reprocessing plant of ORANO La Hague

Iodine-129 is present in controlled liquid radioactive waste routinely released in seawater by the ORANO nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in La Hague (Normandy, France). Brown algae are known for their exceptional ability to concentrate iodine from seawater. They also potentially emit volatile iodine compounds in response to various stresses, such as during emersion at low tide. For these reasons, brown seaweed is routinely collected for radioactivity monitoring in the marine environment (Fucus serratus and Laminaria digitata). Despite the high concentration ratio, the exact mechanism of iodine uptake is still unclear. Chemical imaging by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry provided evidence that iodine is stored by kelps as I-. In this study we investigate in vivo iodine uptake in kelps (L. digitata) with an emphasis on seawater iodine chemical speciation. Our results showed that kelp plantlets were able to take up iodine in the forms of both IO3- and I-. We also observed transient net efflux of I- back to seawater but no IO3- efflux. Since the seaweed stores I- but takes up both IO3- and I-, IO3- was likely to be converted into I- at some point in the plantlet. One major outcome of our experiments was the direct observation of the kelp-based biogenic conversion of seawater IO3- into I-. On the basis of both IO3- and I- uptakes by the seaweed, we propose new steps in the possible iodine concentration mechanism used by brown algae.
