A critical mini-review on doping and heterojunction formation in ZnO-based catalysts

This mini-review on doping and heterojunctions for catalysis applications provides a comprehensive overview of key aspects. Doping, when carried out adequately with a uniform distribution, creates a new energy level that significantly enhances charge transfer and light absorption. This new level alters the material's morphology and enhances intrinsic defects. For instance, ZnO, despite its exceptional band edge concerning oxygen reduction and water oxidation redox potentials, faces the issue of electron-hole recombination. However, forming a heterojunction can effectively aid charge transfer and prolong electron-hole relaxation without recombination. This is where the role of doping and heterojunctions becomes crucial. Additionally, incorporating noble metals with S- and Z-scheme heterojunctions offers a promising mechanism for charge transfer and visible light harvesting, further amplifying the catalytic properties.

Biological Renewable Cellulose-Templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O Nanocomposite Photocatalysts for the Degradation of Methylene Blue

Herein, Cellulose-templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O nanocomposites were prepared using biological renewable cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose-templated Cu-doped ZnO catalysts with different amounts of Cu as the dopants (1, 2, 3, and 4%) were prepared and denoted CZ-1, CZ-2, CZ-3, and CZ-4, respectively, for simplicity. The prepared catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), and 2% Cu-doped ZnO (CZ-2) showed the best catalytic performance (82%), while the pure ZnO, CZ-1, CZ-3, and CZ-4 catalysts exhibited MB dye degradation efficiencies of 54, 63, 65, and 60%, respectively. The best catalyst (CZ-2) was chosen to further improve the degradation efficiency. Different amounts of AgNO3 (10, 15, 30, and 45 mg) were used for the deposition of Ag2O on the surface of CZ-2 and denoted CZA-10, CZA-15, CZA-30, and CZA-45, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, CZA-15 showed remarkable degradation efficiency and degraded 94% of MB, while the CZA-10, CZA-30, and CZA-45 catalysts showed 90, 81, and 79% degradation efficiencies, respectively, under visible light within 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced catalytic performance could be due to the smaller particle size, the higher electron and hole separation and charge transfer efficiencies, and the lower agglomeration in the composite catalyst system. The results also demonstrated that the Cu-doped ZnO prepared with cellulose as a template, followed by the optimum amount of Ag2O deposition, could have promising applications in the degradation of organic pollutants.

New synthetic silver-doped ZnO nanorods trigger cytotoxicity in MCF-7 through apoptosis and antimicrobial activity

The structural, composition, and molecular interaction of silver integrated zinc oxide (20 wt.% Ag/ZnO) were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectrum. The XRD analysis showed the polycrystalline of small crystallite size, whereas the EDX spectrum confirmed the purity of the nanocomposite. The FTIR spectrum indicated the presence of Ag-Zn-O stretching vibration at 1034 cm-1. SEM and TEM images identified the surface morphology and particle size, indicating that Ag/ZnO of nanorods linked with spherical-like shapes. The nanorods of an average length of ∼ 110 nm and an average diameter of ∼ 10 nm. The optical characteristics showed a direct transition of electrons through an energy gap in the 3.30 eV-3.60 eV. The tested nanocomposite exhibited potent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 0.26 µg/ml with cell growth inhibition by 97.3% at the highest concentration compared to Doxorubicin (IC50=6.72 µg/ml). It significantly stimulated total apoptotic breast cancer cell death by 51-fold (32.16% compared to 0.63 for the control), arresting the cell progression at the G1 phase. For further validation of apoptotic activity, the tested Ag/ZnO-NP upregulated the proapoptotic genes and down-regulated the anti-apoptotic gene. Moreover, a molecular docking study highlighted the binding disposition of the nanocomposite as Bcl-2 inhibitors. Additionally, Ag/ZnO-NP exhibited potent antimicrobial activity. Hence, the synthesized nanocomposite can serve as an antimicrobial and cytotoxic agent through apoptosis-induction and could be developed as a biologically active nanocomposite.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Piezo-photocatalytic properties of BaTiO3/CeO2 nanoparticles with heterogeneous structure synthesized by a gel-assisted hydrothermal method

BaTiO3/CeO2 nanoparticles with heterogeneous structure were successfully synthesized via a gel-assisted hydrothermal method. The molar ratio of Ti/Ce was set as 1 : 0, 0.925 : 0.075, 0.9 : 0.1; 0.875 : 0.125, and 0.85 : 0.15 in the dried gels. Affected by the values of Ti/Ce, the particle sizes of hydrothermal products decreased obviously, and the surface of nanoparticles became rough and even had small protrusions. XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, DRS, ESR, and PFM were used to characterize the nanoparticle textures. We speculated that the main body and surface of nanoparticles were BaTiO3 and CeO2 protrusions, respectively. The catalytic performance of BaTiO3/CeO2 nanoparticles was characterized by their abilities to degrade RhB in water under different external conditions (light irradiation, ultrasonic oscillation, or both). In all test groups, BaTiO3/CeO2 nanoparticles with a Ti/Ce molar ratio of 0.875 : 0.125 in the initial dried gel exhibited the strongest catalytic ability when light irradiation and ultrasonication were applied simultaneously owing to the appropriate amount of Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies.

2D defect-engineered Ag-doped γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4: The effect of noble metal doping and oxygen vacancies on exciton-triggering photocatalysis production of singlet oxygen

The selectivity of singlet oxygen (1O2) holds promising applications in complex environmental systems due to its ability to preferentially oxidize target pollutants. Usually, 1O2 in photocatalytic systems is generated via the electron transfer pathway and •O2- plays an important role as an intermediate, while the exciton-based energy transfer pathway for 1O2 generation has been less studied. Here, a 2D Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 with oxygen vacancies was designed which was capable of generating 1O2 by an exciton-based energy transfer-dominated approach, as strongly demonstrated by the results of steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and phosphorescence spectroscopy. In the Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst system, Ag acted as an electron mediator to promote not only the generation of free carriers but also the generation of singlet excitons, while the appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies further promotes the exciton-triggering photocatalysis production of 1O2. The Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 could degrade 99.4% of sulfadiazine within 90 min, and 1O2 played an important role in the degradation of sulfadiazine, as shown by EPR and active species capture experiments. Ecotoxicity predictions indicated that the main byproducts of sulfadiazine degradation by Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 were low in toxicity. The prepared photocatalysts provide a new idea for obtaining 1O2 and designing photocatalysts with selectivity.

Investigation on visible-light photocatalytic performance and mechanism of zinc peroxide for tetracycline degradation and Escherichia coli inactivation

In this study, zincperoxide (ZnO₂) with broad energy gap was firstly used for visible-light-induced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli). A small amount of ZnO₂ (10 mg) could efficiently degrade 100 mL of 50 mg/L TC in a wide pH range (4-12), and the degradation performance was rarely suppressed by common matrix species and natural water sources. Also, 100 mg/L ZnO₂ could inactivate around 7-log E. coli cells within 60 min under visible-light irradiation. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results confirmed that superoxide radical (•O₂^-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) were the main reactive oxygen species (ROS), which were attributed to the self-sensitization of TC and the photoexcitation of released H₂O₂ under the catalysis of Zn(OH)₂ from the hydrolysis of partial ZnO₂, respectively. The pathways of TC degradation and processes of visible-light-induced TC degradation and E. coli inactivation were proposed and deduced in detail. This work presented the enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activities of ZnO₂ for antibiotic degradation and bacterial inactivation, and provided a deep insight into the mechanisms of visible-light-induced TC degradation andE. coli inactivation over ZnO₂.

The Oxygen Vacancy Defect of ZnO/NiO Nanomaterials Improves Photocatalytic Performance and Ammonia Sensing Performance

In this paper, ZnO/NiO composites rich in oxygen vacancies are prepared by the solvothermal method and reduction method. In the test, through the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), we effectively prove the existence of phase, morphology and oxygen vacancies in the material. Through the photocatalysis test and gas sensitivity test, it is found that 10% Ni doped OZN-10 has the best photocatalytic activity and gas sensitivity characteristics. The degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) was 98%. The gas sensitivity test shows that OZN-10 has good selectivity, good response performance (3000 ppm, 27,887%) and excellent response recovery time (response time: 50 s, recovery time: 5–7 s) for saturated NH₃ gas at standard atmospheric pressure (101.325 KPa) and room temperature (25 °C). The synergistic effect of oxygen vacancy as the center of a trap and p–n heterojunction forming an electric potential field at the interface is explained, and the mechanism of improving photocatalysis and gas sensitivity is analyzed. This work will provide an innovative vision for dual-performance oxygen vacancy modification of heterojunctions through photocatalysis.

Fabrication of magnetic ZnO/ZnFe2O4/diatomite composites: improved photocatalytic efficiency under visible light irradiation

The magnetic recoverable ZnO/ZnFe2O4/diatomite (ZZFDT) composite was synthesized by hydrothermal-precipitation method. The structure, optical properties and magnetic properties of the composites were characterized by different analytical instruments. ZZFDT-1 is composed of cubic spinel, hexagonal wurtzite, tetrahedron structure. SEM and TEM showed that ZnO and ZnFe2O4 particles were loaded onto the surface of diatomite, and the particle size was uniform. In addition, ZZFDT-1 is a typical mesoporous material with a specific surface area of 65.3 m2/g and pore size of about 12 nm. The response range of ZZFDT-1 is extended to visible light, and the band gap is 1.5 eV. Moreover, the M-H hysteretic curves of ZZFDT-1 exhibited superparamagnetic properties. The photocatalytic activity of different samples was evaluated by the conversion rate of oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible light. ZZFDT-1 has the best photocatalytic activity and the conversion is up to 95%. Because of its magnetic nature, it can be easily separated from the solution. The results showed that the ZZFDT composite has good photocatalytic activity under visible light. After being reused six times, it still has good stability.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Cefixime Trihydrate by Bismuth Ferrite Nanoparticles

The present work was carried out to synthesize bismuth ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles by combustion synthesis, and to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of synthesized bismuth ferrite nanoparticles against cefixime trihydrate. BFO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using bismuth (III) nitrate and iron (III) nitrate by a combustion synthesis method employing different types of fuels such as maltose, succinic acid, cinnamic acid, and lactose. The effects of the different types of fuels on the morphology and size of the bismuth ferrite nanoparticles were investigated. Characterization of the as-obtained bismuth ferrite nanoparticles was carried out by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), N₂-sorption analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Photoluminescence studies were also carried out for the various bismuth ferrite nanoparticles obtained. Degradation of cefixime trihydrate was investigated under sunlight to evaluate the photocatalytic properties of the bismuth ferrite nanoparticles, and it was found that the bismuth ferrite nanoparticles followed first-order degradation kinetics in solar irradiation in the degradation of antibiotic, cefixime trihydrate.
