Can pre-ozonation be combined with gravity-driven membrane filtration to treat shale gas wastewater?

A review of the development in shale oil and gas wastewater desalination

The development of the shale oil and gas extraction industry has heightened concerns about shale oil and gas wastewater (SOGW). This review comprehensively summarizes, analyzes, and evaluates multiple issues in SOGW desalination. The detailed analysis of SOGW water quality and various disposal strategies with different water quality standards reveals the water quality characteristics and disposal status of SOGW, clarifying the necessity of desalination for the rational management of SOGW. Subsequently, potential and implemented technologies for SOGW desalination are reviewed, mainly including membrane-based, thermal-based, and adsorption-based desalination technologies, as well as bioelectrochemical desalination systems, and the research progress of these technologies in desalinating SOGW are highlighted. In addition, various pretreatment methods for SOGW desalination are comprehensively reviewed, and the synergistic effects on SOGW desalination that can be achieved by combining different desalination technologies are summarized. Renewable energy sources and waste heat are also discussed, which can be used to replace traditional fossil energy to drive SOGW desalination and reduce the negative impact of shale oil and gas exploitation on the environment. Moreover, real project cases for SOGW desalination are presented, and the full-scale or pilot-scale on-site treatment devices for SOGW desalination are summarized. In order to compare different desalination processes clearly, operational parameters and performance data of varying desalination processes, including feed salinity, water flux, salt removal rate, water recovery, energy consumption, and cost, are collected and analyzed, and the applicability of different desalination technologies in desalinating SOGW is qualitatively evaluated. Finally, the recovery of valuable inorganic resources in SOGW is discussed, which is a meaningful research direction for SOGW desalination. At present, the development of SOGW desalination has not reached a satisfactory level, and investing enough energy in SOGW desalination in the future is still necessary to achieve the optimal management of SOGW.

Hierarchically Structured Nanoparticle-Free Omniphobic Membrane for High-Performance Membrane Distillation

The functional loss of membranes caused by pore wetting, mineral scaling, or structural instability is a critical challenge in membrane distillation (MD), which primarily hinders its practical applications. Herein, we propose a novel and facile strategy to fabricate omniphobic membranes with exceptionally robust MD performance. Specifically, a substrate with a hierarchical re-entrant architecture was constructed via spray-water-assisted non-solvent-induced phase separation (SWNIPS), followed by a direct fluorinated surface decoration via "thiol-ene" click chemistry. Deionized (DI) water contact angle measurements revealed an ultrahigh surface water contact angle (166.8 ± 1.8°) and an ultralow sliding angle (3.6 ± 1.1°) of the resultant membrane. Destructive abrasion cycle and ultrasonication tests confirmed its structural robustness. Moreover, the membrane possessed excellent wetting resistance, as evidenced by the prevention of membrane pore penetration by all low-surface-tension testing liquids, allowing stable long-term MD operation to treat brine wastewater with a surfactant content of 0.6 mM. In a desalination experiment using shale gas wastewater, the omniphobic membrane exhibited robust MD performance, achieving a high water recovery ratio of ∼60% without apparent changes in water flux and permeate conductivity over the entire membrane process. Overall, our study paves the way for a nanoparticle-free methodology for the scalable fabrication of high-performance MD membranes with surface omniphobicity and structural robustness in hypersaline wastewater treatment.

Confounding Effect of Wetting, Compaction, and Fouling in an Ultra-Low-Pressure Membrane Filtration: A Review

Ultra-low-pressure membrane (ULPM) filtration has emerged as a promising decentralized water and wastewater treatment method. It has been proven effective in long-term filtration under stable flux without requiring physical or chemical cleaning, despite operating at considerably lower flux. The use of ultra-low pressure, often simply by hydrostatic force (often called gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration), makes it fall into the uncharted territory of common pressure-driven membrane filtration. The applied polymeric membrane is sensitive to compaction, wetting, and fouling. This paper reviews recent studies on membrane compaction, wetting, and fouling. The scope of this review includes studies on those phenomena in the ULPM and how they affect the overall performance of the system. The performance of GDM systems for water and wastewater treatment is also evaluated. Finally, perspectives on the future research direction of ULPM filtration are also detailed.

Characterization of microbial communities and functions in shale gas wastewaters and sludge: Implications for pretreatment

As hydraulic fracturing (HF) practices keep expanding in China, a comparative understanding of biological characteristics of flowback and produced waters (FPW) and sludge in impoundments for FPW reserve will help propose appropriate treatment strategies. Therefore, in this study, the microbial communities and functions in impoundments that collected wastewaters from dozens of wells were characterized. The results showed that microbial richness and diversity were significantly increased in sludge compared with those in FPW. The vast majority of microorganisms found in FPW and sludge are organic degraders, providing the possibility of using these indigenous microorganisms to biodegrade organic compounds. Our laboratory findings first show that wastewater pretreatment using these microorganisms was effective, and organic compounds in FPW from different shale formations were removed by 35-68% within 72 h in a wide temperature range (8 - 30 ℃). Meanwhile, highly toxic compounds such as phthalate esters (PAEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and petroleum hydrocarbons were effectively eliminated in reactors. The main microorganisms, key functional genes, and putative pathways for alkanes, PAHs, and PAEs degradation were also identified.
