Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in student dormitory microenvironments: Concentrations, sources, and human exposure

Microenvironments, such as student dormitories, differ from general residential environments. They are characterized by small spaces, poor air circulation, high personnel densities, and electronic products, such as computers that are turned on for extended periods, leading to increased pollution concentrations. The limited space and poor air circulation reduce migration of contaminants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), making it easier for PBDEs to accumulate. However, few studies have been conducted on small group dwellings, including student dormitory dwellings. We collected dust samples from student dormitories of a university to analyze the characteristics and traceability of PBDEs in dormitory microenvironments. The results showed that PBDE congeners were widely present in university dormitories and the order of median concentration of ∑10PBDEs was as follows: male old-fashioned dormitory (273 ng/g) > female four-person dormitory (132 ng/g) > female two-person dormitory (132 ng/g) > male two-person dormitory (96.2 ng/g) > female old-fashioned dormitory (91.6 ng/g) > male four-person apartment (51.8 ng/g). BDE-209 was the most abundant PBDE congener, followed by BDE-47, and BDE-28. PBDEs were also found in typical electrical appliances, with higher concentrations in laptops than in desktops, and higher concentrations in desktops than in idle ones. According to Spearman correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), we also found that boards and wallpaper materials were common sources of contamination in the microenvironment of student dormitories, and that female dormitories had more sources of PBDE emissions. Human exposure to PBDEs in students is below the US Environmental Protection Agency reference dose. Although exposure to PBDEs generated in dormitories does not pose a significant health risk, the potential hazards of PBDEs to the reagent environment remain to be investigated.

Characterization and childhood exposure assessment of toxic heavy metals in household dust under true living conditions from 10 China cities

Health hazards caused by metal exposure in household dust are concerning environmental health problems. Exposure to toxic metals in household dust imposes unclear but solid health risks, especially for children. In this multicenter cross-sectional study, a total of 250 household dust samples were collected from ten stratified cities in China (Panjin, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Lanzhou, Luoyang, Ningbo, Xi'an, Wuxi, Mianyang, Shenzhen) between April 2018 and March 2019. Questionnaire was conducted to gather information on individuals' living environment and health status in real-life situations. Multivariate logistic regression and principal component analysis were conducted to identify risk factors and determine the sources of metals in household dust. The median concentration of five metals in household dust from 10 cities ranged from 0.03 to 73.18 μg/g. Among the five heavy metals, only chromium in household dust of Mianyang was observed significantly both higher in the cold season and from the downwind households. Mercury, cadmium, and chromium were higher in the third-tier cities, with levels of 0.08, 0.30 and 97.28 μg/g, respectively. There were two sources with a contribution rate of 38.3 % and 25.8 %, respectively. Potential risk factors for increased metal concentration include long residence time, close to the motorway, decoration within five years, and purchase of new furniture within one year. Under both moderate and high exposure scenarios, chromium showed the highest level of exposure with 6.77 × 10-4 and 2.28 × 10-3 mg·kg-1·d-1, and arsenic imposed the highest lifetime carcinogenic risk at 1.67 × 10-4 and 3.17 × 10-4, respectively. The finding highlighted the priority to minimize childhood exposure of arsenic from household dust.

Contamination levels, influencing factors, and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in house dust of northern Serbia

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a group of compounds that, due to their applications, are considered mainly indoor contaminants. To obtain the first information about the presence of PBDEs in Serbia, dust samples (n = 50) were collected in settlements in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. The selected/target congeners (BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, and 183) were extracted from house dust by microwave-assisted extraction technique, and purified extracts were analyzed on a dual-column gas chromatograph with micro-electron capture detectors. A wide range of ΣPBDEs was detected (0.295 to 394 ng g-1 dust), which reflects large differences in contamination among the examined homes. For the majority of samples (72%), ΣPBDEs were lower than 5 ng g-1 indicating that people living in Vojvodina province are exposed to low concentrations of PBDEs present in their households. Based on principal component analysis (PCA), balcony areas and age of the house positively correlate with the PBDE congeners with higher detection frequencies (≥ 50%), namely, with BDE-99, BDE-153, and BDE-183. Statistically significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) was obtained for BDE-99 and the number of household's members. Estimated daily intakes (EDItot) were calculated for ingestion and dermal absorption of dust for two age groups-adults and toddlers. These are the first data on PBDE status in the area of the Western Balkan, and the health risk assessment indicates that PBDE levels obtained in household dust do not pose a risk for human health.

Total contents, fractionation and bioaccessibility of nine heavy metals in household dust from 14 cities in China

The potential health risk caused by long-term exposure to heavy metals in household dust is not only depended on their total content, but also bioaccessibility. In this study, twenty-one dust samples were collected from residential buildings, schools, and laboratories in 14 provincial-capital/industrial cities of China, aiming to evaluate the total contents, fractionation, bioaccessibility and health risks of nine heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Mn, Zn, Fe, and Cu). Results showed that the highest levels of Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn were found in laboratory dust, As, Pb and Mn in school dust, and Fe and Cu in residential dust, indicating different source profiles of the heavy metals. The mean bioaccessibility of the heavy metals across all samples as evaluated using SBRC (Solubility Bioavailability Research Consortium), IVG (In Vitro Gastrointestinal), and PBET (Physiologically Based Extraction Test) assays was 58.4%, 32.4% and 17.2% in gastric phase (GP), and 24.9%, 21.9% and 9.39% in intestinal phase (IP), respectively. Cadmium had the highest content in the fractions of E1+C2 (43.7%), as determined by sequential extraction, and Pb, Mn, and Zn had a higher content in E1+C2+F3 (64.2%, 67.2%, 78.8%), resulting in a higher bioaccessibility of these heavy metals than others. Moreover, the bioaccessibility of most heavy metals was inversely related to dust pH (R = -0.18 in GP; -0.18 in IP; P < 0.01) and particle size, while a positive correlation was observed with total organic carbon (R = 0.40 in GP; 0.38 in IP; P < 0.01). The exposure risk calculated by the highest bioaccessibility was generally lower than that calculated by the total content. However, Pb in one school dust sample had an unacceptable carcinogenic risk (adult risk = 1.19 × 10-4; child risk = 1.08 × 10-4). This study suggests that bioaccessibility of heavy metals in household dust is likely related to geochemical fractions and physical/chemical properties. Further research is needed to explore the sources of bioaccessible heavy metals in household dust.

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Human Milk of Croatian First-Time Mothers: 2010 Versus 2020

The presence of selected polybrominated diphenyl ethers (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, and -183) was investigated in human milk samples collected from first-time mothers living in Zagreb, capital of Croatia. Samples from 2020 and 2010 were analyzed, and the first temporal comparison between the profiles and levels of these compounds in this area was obtained. A statistically significant difference between mass fractions depending on the sampling year was observed only for BDE-99, with values in 2020 higher than in 2010. BDE-153, whose median value (0.25 and 0.26 ng g-1 lipid weight (l.w.) in 2010 and 2020, respectively) did not decrease in the 10-year period, was the most frequently detected congener in samples from both years. ΣPBDEs ranged from < LOD to 3.53 ng g-1 l.w. (median 0.25 ng g-1 l.w.), and from 0.14 to 6.75 ng g-1 l.w. (median 0.55 ng g-1 l.w.) in 2010 and 2020, respectively. Maternal age and reported fish consumption had no effect on observed PBDE mass fractions, while for BDE-153, positive significant correlation (p > 0.05) was observed of its detected mass fraction with mother's body mass index (BMI) before pregnancy and after childbirth. Infants median estimated daily intake (EDI) via milk ingestion for ΣPBDE was higher in 2020 (3.221 ng kg-1 bw day-1) compared to 2010 (1.429 ng kg-1 bw day-1), but both values were well below threshold value, indicating that human milk consumption in this specific case is unlikely to raise health risks to infants.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust: A systematic review on spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk assessment

Much attention has been paid on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust due to their ubiquitous occurrences in the environment. Based on the data from 59 articles sampled from 2005 to 2020, we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk of 8 PBDE homologues in household dusts worldwide. BDE-209 is the predominant PBDE in household dusts, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. The total concentrations of PBDEs (∑₈PBDEs) are found to be high in household dusts sampled from 2005 to 2008 and show a significant decline trend from 2009 to 2016 (p < 0.05) and a little upward tendency from 2017 to 2020. The concentrations of PBDEs in household dusts vary greatly in different countries of the world. The use of penta-BDE is the main source of three to five bromo-biphenyl ether monomers contributing 17.4% of ∑₈PBDEs, while BDE-209 and BDE-183 are derived from the use of household appliances contributing 82.6% of ∑₈PBDEs. Ingestion is the main exposure route for adults and toddlers, followed by dermal contact. The values of hazard index (HI) exposed to PBDEs in household dusts are all less than 1 for both adults and toddlers, indicating a low non-cancer risk. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of BDE-209 are less than 10^-6 for both adults and toddlers, suggesting a negligible risk. However, the total carcinogenic risk of toddlers is higher than that of adults, indicating that much attention should be paid to toddlers exposed to BDE-209 in household dust.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in dust from different indoor environments in Zagreb, Croatia: Levels and human exposure assessment

The present study reports for the first time the levels of 7 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners and 11 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) measured in dust samples collected in 10 kindergartens, 11 workplaces, and 25 cars from Zagreb, Croatia. ΣPBDEs mass fractions were 3.11-14.42, <LOD-313.75, and 0.6-5666.98 ng g^-1 dust, while ΣPAHs were 244.9-833.0, 230.5-5632.7, and 395.6-12114.8 ng g^-1 dust in kindergartens, workplaces, and cars, respectively. In the central case scenario, dust from homes contributed to the intake of PBDEs and PAHs the most, while for PBDEs in the worst-case scenario, the intake through car dust prevailed. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed for PAHs and PBDEs, respectively, for two age groups (adults and toddlers) and for professional drivers as a specific group. The hazard index for adults, toddlers, and professional drivers for PBDEs was less than 1 indicating that there is no significant risk of non-carcinogenic effects due to exposure to these chemicals. Total carcinogenic risk for PAHs was negligible for all groups in the central case scenario, but the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk values >10^-6 in the worst-case scenario indicated a potential risk, especially for professional drivers. Also, in the cases of elevated contaminant levels, toddlers are susceptible to a higher risk, despite the short time they spend in cars.

Preparation and Characterization of Cyclodextrin Coated Red Phosphorus Double-Shell Microcapsules and Its Application in Flame Retardant Polyamide6

Using the melamine borate and crosslinked β-cyclodextrin as shell materials, the double-shell microcapsules (Mic-DP) of red phosphorus (RP) was prepared, and its flame-retardant effect on polyamide 6 (PA6) was investigated. Compared with RP, Mic-DP showed lower hygroscopic and better inoxidizability. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PA6/13%Mic-DP was 27.8%, and PA6/13%Mic-DP reached V-0 rating. After the addition of 13% Mic-DP, the total exothermic (THR), peak exothermic (PK-HRR), and average effective thermal combustion (AV-EHC) rates of PA6 decreased. In addition, in order to investigate its flame-retardant mechanism, the pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) methods were used, and the results showed that mic DP acted as a flame retardant in the gas and condensed phases. The Mic-DP exhibited good compatibility and dispersibility in PA6.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Indoor Dust in Croatia: Levels, Sources, and Human Health Risks

Compounds that contribute to indoor pollution are regularly investigated due to the fact that people spend most of their time indoors. Worldwide investigations have shown that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in indoor dust, but to the best of our knowledge, this paper reports for the first time the presence of PAHs in Croatian households. Eleven PAHs were analysed in house dust samples collected in the city of Zagreb and surroundings (N = 66). Their possible indoor sources and the associated health risks were assessed. Total mass fraction of detected PAHs ranged from 92.9 ng g^-1 to 1504.1 ng g^-1 (median 466.8 ng g^-1), whereby four-ring compounds, Flu and Pyr, contributed the most. DahA was the only compound that did not show statistically significantly positive correlation with other analysed PAHs, indicating that it originated from different sources. Based on diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA), mixed sources contributed to PAHs levels present in Croatian households. Although our results indicate that Croatian house dusts are weakly polluted with PAHs, total ILCR values calculated for children and adults revealed that people exposed to the highest mass fractions of PAHs measured in this area are at elevated cancer risk.

Trace elements in indoor dust-Children's health risk considering overall daily exposure

Indoor dust presents an important source of daily exposure to toxic elements. The present study reports for the first time the levels of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Se, Sr, Tl, V, and Zn measured in dust samples collected from 10 kindergartens and 21 cars from Zagreb, Croatia. Based on the obtained data, we assessed the health risks from overall daily exposure to trace elements for children aged 2-6 years taking into account three pathways of dust intake-ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation. The median concentration of most elements was significantly higher in dust obtained from cars compared to kindergartens, especially in the cases of Co (11.62 vs. 3.60 mg kg^-1 ), Cr (73.55 vs. 39.89 mg kg^-1 ), Cu (186.33 vs. 26.01 mg kg^-1 ), Mo (8.599 vs. 0.559 mg kg^-1 ), Ni (37.05 vs. 17.38 mg kg^-1 ), and Sn (9.238 vs. 1.159 mg kg^-1 ). Oral intake was identified as the most important exposure pathway, except for Cr, Ni, and Sb where dermal contact was the main route of exposure. Health risk assessment indicated that no adverse effects are expected from overall exposure to trace elements. Although the cases of high exposure to toxic elements are not common in areas with no significant environmental pollutants, due to the health threat they may present even at low levels, their status should be carefully monitored.
