Quantitative characterization and genetic diversity associated with N-cycle pathways in urban rivers with different remediation techniques

Startup of a large height-diameter ratio bioreactor by alternate feeding: performance of partial nitrification and enrichment of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB)

In order to solve the complicated control of dissolved oxygen (DO) for partial nitrification in bioreactors treating high NH 4 + - N wastewater, a large height-diameter ratio anammox pre-reactor system was developed. And in this reactor, NO 2 - - N accumulation rate can reach 85.76% by alternate feeding with high NH 4 + - N wastewater (150 mg NH 4 + - N / L ) and low NH 4 + - N wastewater (50 mg c) with low DO (0.19 mg/L-0.62 mg/L). Based on 16S rRNA identification technology, it was found that Nitrosomonas had a significant effect on NH 4 + - N oxidization in this study. And when the reactor treated higher concentration wastewater (250 mg NH 4 + - N / L ), the growth rate of Nitrosomonas was higher than that of Nitrospira (nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, NOB), which was conducive to improving the NO 2 - - N accumulation rate and realizing partial nitrification stably. It was also found that the material exchange frequency of the microbial flora during alternate feeding with different NH 4 + - N concentration wastewaters was higher than that during feeding with higher NH 4 + - N concentration wastewater (250 mg/L) by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolism pathways analysis. This study can provide valuable insights and lay the foundation for building anammox pre-reactors.

Different in root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms effect on nitrogen removal between three emergent aquatic plants in surface flow constructed wetlands

Swine wastewater contains high concentration of nitrogen (N), causing pollution of surrounding water bodies. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are considered as an effective ecological treatment measure to remove nitrogen. Some emergent aquatic plants could tolerate high ammonia, and play a crucial part in CWs to treat high concentration N wastewater. However, the mechanism of root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms of emergent plants on nitrogen removal is still unclear. Effects of organic and amino acids on rhizosphere N cycle microorganisms and environmental factors across three emergent plants were investigated in this study. The highest TN removal efficiency were 81.20% in surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) plant with Pontederia cordata. The root exudation rates results showed that organic and amino acids were higher in 56 d than that in 0 d in SFCWs plants with Iris pseudacorus and P. cordata. The highest ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) gene copy numbers were found in I. pseudacorus rhizosphere soil, while the highest nirS, nirK, hzsB and 16S rRNA gene copy numbers were detected in P. cordata rhizosphere soil. Regression analysis results demonstrated that organic and amino acids exudation rates were positive related to rhizosphere microorganisms. These results indicated that organic and amino acids secretion could stimulate growth of emergent plants rhizosphere microorganisms in SFCWs for swine wastewater treatment. In addition, the EC, TN, NH4+-N and NO3--N were negatively correlated with organic and amino acids exudation rates, and abundances of rhizosphere microorganisms via Pearson correlation analysis. These results imply that organic and amino acids, and rhizosphere microorganisms synergically affected on the nitrogen removal in SFCWs.

Coupling of Anammox Activity and PAH Biodegradation: Current Insights and Future Directions

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has shown success in past years for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater containing inorganic nutrients (i.e., nitrogen). However, the increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated matrices calls for new strategies for efficient and environmentally sustainable remediation. Therefore, the present review examined the literature on the connection between the anammox process and PAHs using VOSviewer to shed light on the mechanisms involved during PAH biodegradation and the key factors affecting anammox bacteria. The scientific literature thoroughly discussed here shows that PAHs can be involved in nitrogen removal by acting as electron donors, and their presence does not adversely affect the anammox bacteria. Anammox activity can be improved by regulating the operating parameters (e.g., organic load, dissolved oxygen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and external supplementation (i.e., calcium nitrate) that promote changes in the microbial community (e.g., Candidatus Jettenia), favoring PAH degradation. The onset of a synergistic dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and partial denitrification can be beneficial for PAH and nitrogen removal.

Key enzymes involved in anammox-based processes for wastewater treatment: An applied overview

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has attracted significant attention as an economic, robustness, and sustainable method for the treatment of nitrogen (N)-rich wastewater. Anammox bacteria (AnAOB) coexist with other microorganisms, and particularly with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and/or heterotrophic bacteria (HB), in symbiosis in favor of the substrate requirement (ammonium and nitrite) of the AnAOB being supplied by these other organisms. The dynamics of these microbial communities have a significant effect on the N-removal performance, but the corresponding metabolic pathways are still not fully understood. These processes involve many common metabolites that may act as key factors to control the symbiotic interactions between these organisms, to maximize N-removal efficiency from wastewater. Therefore, this work overviews the current state of knowledge about the metabolism of these microorganisms including key enzymes and intermediate metabolites and summarizes already reported experiences based on the employment of certain metabolites for the improvement of N-removal using anammox-based processes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Approaches knowledge about the biochemistry and metabolic pathways involved in anammox-based processes. Some molecular tools can be used to determine enzymatic activity, serving as an optimization in nitrogen removal processes. Enzymatic evaluation allied to the physical-chemical and biomolecular analysis of the nitrogen removal processes expands the application in different effluents.
