Ultrafine multi-metal (Zn, Cd, Pb) sulfide aggregates formation in periodically water-logged organic soil

Mitigation of the mobilization and accumulation of toxic metal(loid)s in ryegrass using sodium sulfide

Remediation of soils contaminated with toxic metal(loid)s (TMs) and mitigation of the associated ecological and human health risks are of great concern. Sodium sulfide (Na2S) can be used as an amendment for the immobilization of TMs in contaminated soils; however, the effects of Na2S on the leachability, bioavailability, and uptake of TMs in highly-contaminated soils under field conditions have not been investigated yet. This is the first field-scale research study investigating the effect of Na2S application on soils with Hg, Pb and Cu contents 70-to-7000-fold higher than background values and also polluted with As, Cd, Ni, and Zn. An ex situ remediation project including soil replacement, immobilization with Na2S, and safe landfilling was conducted at Daiziying and Anle (China) with soils contaminated with As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn. Notably, Na2S application significantly lowered the sulfuric-nitric acid leachable TMs below the limits defined by Chinese regulations. There was also a significant reduction in the DTPA-extractable TMs in the two studied sites up to 85.9 % for Hg, 71.4 % for Cu, 71.9 % for Pb, 48.1 % for Cd, 37.1 % for Zn, 34.3 % for Ni, and 15.7 % for As compared to the untreated controls. Moreover, Na2S treatment decreased the shoot TM contents in the last harvest to levels lower than the TM regulation limits concerning fodder crops, and decreased the TM root-to-shoot translocation, compared to the untreated control sites. We conclude that Na2S has great potential to remediate soils heavily tainted with TMs and mitigate the associated ecological and human health risks.

Multiple potentially toxic elements in urban gardens from a Brazilian industrialized city

Urban agriculture should be promoted as long as the food produced is safe for consumption. Located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo-Brazil, Santo André has intense industrial activities and more recently an increasing stimulus to urban gardening. One of the potential risks associated to this activity is the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). In this study, the concentration of PTEs (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo, Pb, Sb, Se, V and Zn) was evaluated by soil (n = 85) and soil amendments (n = 19) in urban gardens from this municipality. Only barium was above regulatory limits in agricultural soil ranging from 20 to 112 mg kg-1. Geochemical indexes (Igeo, Cf and Er) revealed moderate to severe pollution for As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Pb Se and Zn, especialy in Capuava petrochemical complex gardens. A multivariate statistical approach discriminated Capuava gardens from the others and correlated As, Cr and V as main factors of pollution. However, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were below the acceptable range for regulatory purposes of 10-6-10-4 for adults. Soil amendments were identified as a possible source of contamination for Ba, Zn and Pb which ranged from 37 to 4137 mg kg-1, 20 to 701 mg kg-1 and 0.7 to 73 mg kg-1, respectively. The results also indicated the presence of six pathogenic bacteria in these amendments. Besides that, the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance for Shigella, Enterobacter and Citrobacter isolates suggests that soil management practices improvement is necessary.

Metal phytostabilization by mastic shrub (Pistacia lentiscus L.) and its root-associated bacteria in different habitats of Sardinian abandoned mining areas (Italy)

Pistacia lentiscus L. is an excluder metallophyte proposed for the revegetation and phytostabilization of metal-contaminated sites in the Mediterranean area. The present study aims at evaluating the linking between bacterial communities and plants spontaneously growing in ecosystems chronically impacted by mining activities. Environmental properties and metal accumulation into hypogeal and epigeal tissues were analyzed in wild plants of two contrasting habitats with extreme metal contamination (> 2300 mg/kg for Zn, > 1100 mg/kg for Pb, > 10 mg/kg for Cd). The community structures of rhizospheric and root endophytic bacteria were fingerprinted by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of the 16S rRNA gene. The wild shrubs efficiently restrict the accumulation of the three major contaminants to the epigeal tissues in the two habitats under study (249 ± 68 mg/kg dw for Zn, 43 ± 21 mg/kg dw for Pb, and 1.4 ± 0.5 mg/kg dw for Cd). Evidence was provided that the combined but not individual effect of environmental conditions (moisture, inorganic carbon, pH) and proportion between Zn and Cd in the mine substrate play a role in structuring rhizosphere bacterial communities. The observed changes in community structures of root endophytes were found to be strongly associated with Pb level in roots and substrate properties (inorganic carbon and Zn/Cd ratio). Overall, our study highlights the importance of the analysis of multifactorial interactions among mine substrate, plant, and microbes for understanding how the environmental context affects phytoremediation under real conditions.

Potential mobilization of cadmium and zinc in soils spiked with smithsonite and sphalerite under different water management regimes

Particulate cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) are ubiquitous in agricultural soils of Pb-Zn mining regions. Water management serves as an important agronomic measure altering the bioavailability of Zn and Cd in soils, but how this affects particulate Cd and Zn and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Microcosm soil incubation combined with spectroscopic and microscopic characterization was conducted. During a two-year-long incubation period we observed that the concentrations of soil CaCl₂-extractable Zn and Cd increased 3-10 times in sphalerite-spiked soils and 1-2 times in smithsonite-spiked soils under periodic flooding conditions due to the long-term dissolution of sphalerite (SP) and smithsonite (SM). However, the increase in the concentration of CaCl₂-extractable metals (Zn: from 0.607 mg kg^-1 to 1.051 mg kg^-1 and Cd: from 0.047 mg kg^-1 to 0.119 mg kg^-1) was found only in SP-treatment under continuous flooding conditions, indicating the mobilization of metals. Ultrafiltration analysis shows that the nanoparticulate fraction of Zn and Cd in soil pore water increased 5 and 7 times in SP-treatments under continuous flooding conditions, suggesting the increment of metal pools in soil pore water. HRTEM-EDX-SAED further reveals that these nanoparticles were mainly crystalline ZnS and Zn-bearing sulfate nanoparticles in the SP-treatment and amorphous ZnCO₃ and ZnS nanoparticles in the SM-treatment. Therefore, the formation of the stable crystalline Zn-bearing nanoparticles in the SP-treatment may explain the elevation of the concentration of soil CaCl₂-extractable Zn and Cd under continuous flooding. The potential mobility of particulate metals should therefore be expected in scenarios of continuous flooding such as paddy soils and wetland systems.

Lead and Zinc Uptake and Toxicity in Maize and Their Management

Soil contamination with heavy metals is a global problem, and these metals can reach the food chain through uptake by plants, endangering human health. Among the metal pollutants in soils, zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) are common co-pollutants from anthropogenic activities. Thus, we sought to define the accumulation of Zn and Pb in agricultural soils and maize. Concentrations of Pb in agricultural soil (in Namibia) could reach 3015 mg/Kg, whereas concentrations of Zn in soil (in China) could reach 1140 mg/Kg. In addition, the maximum concentrations of Zn and Pb were 27,870 and 2020 mg/Kg in maize roots and 4180 and 6320 mg/Kg in shoots, respectively. Recent studies have shown that soil properties (such as organic matter content, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), texture, and clay content) can play important roles in the bioavailability of Zn and Pb. We also investigated some of the genes and proteins involved in the uptake and transport of Zn and Pb by maize. Among several amendment methods to reduce the bioavailability of Zn and Pb in soils, the use of biochar, bioremediation, and the application of gypsum and lime have been widely reported as effective methods for reducing the accumulation of metals in soils and plants.
