Recent Development of Electrolytes for Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries (Aorfbs): Current Status, Challenges, and Prospects

In recent years, aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) have attracted considerable attention due to advancements in grid-level energy storage capacity research. These batteries offer remarkable benefits, including outstanding capacity retention, excellent cell performance, high energy density, and cost-effectiveness. The organic electrolytes in AORFBs exhibit adjustable redox potentials and tunable solubilities in water. Previously, various types of organic electrolytes, such as quinones, organometallic complexes, viologens, redox-active polymers, and organic salts, were extensively investigated for their electrochemical performance and stability. This study presents an overview of recently published novel organic electrolytes for AORFBs in acidic, alkaline, and neutral environments. Furthermore, it delves into the current status, challenges, and prospects of AORFBs, highlighting different strategies to overcome these challenges, with special emphasis placed on their design, composition, functionalities, and cost. A brief techno-economic analysis of various aqueous RFBs is also outlined, considering their potential scalability and integration with renewable energy systems.

A phenazine-inspired framework for identifying biological functions of microbial redox-active metabolites

While the list of small molecules known to be secreted by environmental microbes continues to grow, our understanding of their in situ biological functions remains minimal. The time has come to develop a framework to parse the meaning of these "secondary metabolites," which are ecologically ubiquitous and have direct applications in medicine and biotechnology. Here, we focus on a particular subset of molecules, redox active metabolites (RAMs), and review the well-studied phenazines as archetypes of this class. We argue that efforts to characterize the chemical, physical and biological makeup of the microenvironments, wherein these molecules are produced, coupled with measurements of the molecules' basic chemical properties, will enable significant progress in understanding the precise roles of novel RAMs.

Modular Engineering Strategy to Redirect Electron Flux into the Electron-Transfer Chain for Enhancing Extracellular Electron Transfer in Shewanella oneidensis

Efficient extracellular electron transfer (EET) of exoelectrogens is critical for practical applications of various bioelectrochemical systems. However, the low efficiency of electron transfer remains a major bottleneck. In this study, a modular engineering strategy, including broadening the sources of the intracellular electron pool, enhancing intracellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) regeneration, and promoting electron release from electron pools, was developed to redirect electron flux into the electron transfer chain in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Among them, four genes include gene SO1522 encoding a lactate transporter for broadening the sources of the intracellular electron pool, gene gapA encoding a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and gene mdh encoding a malate dehydrogenase in the central carbon metabolism for enhancing intracellular NADH regeneration, and gene ndh encoding NADH dehydrogenase on the inner membrane for releasing electrons from intracellular electron pools into the electron-transport chain. Upon assembly of the four genes, electron flux was directly redirected from the electron donor to the electron-transfer chain, achieving 62% increase in intracellular NADH levels, which resulted in a 3.5-fold enhancement in the power density from 59.5 ± 3.2 mW/m² (wild type) to 270.0 ± 12.7 mW/m² (recombinant strain). This study confirmed that redirecting electron flux from the electron donor to the electron-transfer chain is a viable approach to enhance the EET rate of S. oneidensis.
