Enhanced photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation and H2 evolution reaction over carbon nitride nanosheets: N defects abundant materials

Unveiling the destabilization of sp3 and sp2 bonds in transition metal-modified borohydrides to improve reversible dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation

Borohydrides offer promise as potential carriers for hydrogen storage due to their high hydrogen concentration. However, the strong chemical bonding within borohydrides poses challenges for efficient hydrogen release during usage and restricts the re-hydrogenation process when attempting to regenerate the material. These high thermodynamic and kinetic barriers present obstacles in achieving reversible de-hydrogenation and re-hydrogenation of borohydrides, impeding their practical application in hydrogen storage systems. Employing density functional theory calculations, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into the influence of transition metals on both the BH4 cluster, a fundamental building block of borohydrides, and pure boron, which is formed as the end product following hydrogen release. Our research reveals correlations among the d-band center, work function, and surface energy of 3d and 4d transition metals. These correlations are directly linked to the weakening of bonding within the BH4 cluster when adsorbed on catalyst surfaces. On the other hand, we also explore how various intrinsic properties of transition metals influence the formation of boron vacancies and the hydrogen bonding process. By establishing a comprehensive correlation between the weakening of sp3 hybridization in the BH4 cluster and the sp2 hybridization in boron, we facilitate the identification and screening of optimal candidates capable of achieving reversible de-hydrogenation and re-hydrogenation in borohydrides.

Solvent-regulated self-assembled carbon nitride for photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) in water

Manufacturing high-performance and reusable materials from radioactive uranium-containing wastewater remains a significant challenge. Herein, a supramolecular self-assembly strategy was proposed, using melamine and cyanuric acid as precursors and using intermolecular hydrogen bond force to form carbon nitride (CN-D) in different solvents through a single thermal polymerization strategy. Supramolecular self-assembly method is a promising strategy to synthesize a novel carbon nitride with molecular regulatory properties. In addition, 98% of U(VI) in wastewater can be removed by using CN-D for 60 min under visible light. After five cycles of recycling, more than 95% of U(VI) can still be reduced, indicating that it has good recyclability and reusability. This study not only provides an efficient photocatalytic method of uranium reduction, but also provides a new method for self-assembly synthesis.

Recyclable MXene-bridged Z-scheme NiFe2O4/MXene/Bi2WO6 heterojunction with enhanced charge separation for efficient sonocatalytic removal of ciprofloxacin

Sonocatalysis has emerged as a promising technology for addressing environmental pollution issues. However, the efficacy of sonocatalytic processes is primarily hindered by challenges related to the sluggish flow rate of photogenerated electrons. This study presents a novel approach to address this issue by developing an improved Z-scheme NiFe2O4/MXene/Bi2WO6 (NMB) composite that exhibits exceptional sonocatalytic activity for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. In particular, the NiFe2O4/MXene (5 wt%)/Bi2WO6 composite could achieve high CIP (at 10 mg/L) degradation efficiency (97.39 %) after 60 min of ultrasonic irradiation. The exceptional sonocatalytic activity of the composite was attributed to the synergistic interaction of the Z-scheme heterojunction charge transfer route and the electron mediator of Ti3C2-MXene, which enhances light collection capacity, separates photogenerated carriers efficiently, and improves redox activity of the composite. The scavenging experiments reveal that the sonocatalytic degradation of CIP was driven by holes (h+), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and superoxide anion radicals (•O2-), with the former playing a dominant role. The results of reuse experiments demonstrate the outstanding sonocatalytic stability of the catalyst, as well as its uncomplicated recovery. The developed NMB Z-scheme composite shows promise for sonocatalytic treatment of antibiotics in industrial wastewaters, particularly those with high turbidity and/or low transparency. The findings also open up avenues for developing efficient and cost-effective sonocatalysts with good recyclability and remarkable performance.

Construction of type-II scheme SnO@HfC photocatalyst for bisphenol A degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation; DFT and self-cleaning analysis

In this study, novel stannous oxide@hafnium carbide (SnO@HfC) nanocomposite was successfully manufactured by an appropriate hydrothermal scheme which was utilized for the photocatalytic degradation of BPA by stimulation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and self-cleaning application. Numerous methods were applied for the characterization of photocatalyst and demonstrated the successful preparation of SnO@HfC nanocomposite. The crystal structures, band structures and density of states for SnO and HfC were explored by DFT analysis. The amazing PMS stimulation performance of SnO@HfC nanocomposite originated from the establishment of a heterojunction, which led to the enhancement of the light response aptitude and the electron conduction competence of the composite. BPA was degraded by 0.75 g/L PMS and SnO@HfC at neutral pH during the period of 60 min. In order to identify active groups in the reaction procedure, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) approaches were also used. In the subsequent active species scavenging assays, where sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, holes, and superoxide radicals were engaged in the degradation of BPA. While, liquid phase mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to pinpoint the intermediate metabolites in the course of degradation. SnO@HfC/PMS/light system delivered excellent TOC removal efficiency and less ions leaching. The SnO@HfC nanocomposite proved good durability and reusability in continuous cycle tests along with excellent self-cleaning function on the glass substrate. The SnO@HfC nanocomposite performs admirably in terms of self-cleaning application. The SnO@HfC nanocomposite is expected to be used in the future for the treatment of wastewater that contains pharmaceuticals due to its superior stability and reusability after five consecutive cycles.
