Eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles against mosquitoes: Pesticidal impact and indispensable biosafety assessment

The emergence of nanotechnology has opened new avenues for enhancing pest control strategies through the development of nanopesticides. Green-fabricated nanoparticles, while promising due to their eco-friendly synthesis methods, may still pose risks to biodiversity and ecosystem stability. The potential toxic effects of nanomaterials on ecosystems and human health raise important questions about their real-world application. Understanding the dose-response relationships of nanopesticides, both in terms of pest control efficacy and non-target organism safety, is crucial for ensuring their sustainable use in agricultural settings. This review delves into the complexities of silver nanopesticides, exploring their interactions with arthropod species, modes of action, and underlying mechanisms of toxicity. It discusses critical issues concerning the emergence of silver nanopesticides, spanning their mosquitocidal efficacy to environmental impact and safety considerations. While nano‑silver has shown promise in targeting insect pests, there is a lack of systematic research comparing its effects on different arthropod subclasses. Moreover, factors influencing nanotoxicity, such as nanoparticle size, charge, and surface chemistry, require further investigation to optimize the design of eco-safe nanoparticles for pest control. By elucidating the mechanisms by which nanoparticles interact with pests and non-target organisms, we can enhance the specificity and effectiveness of nanopesticides while minimizing unintended ecological consequences.

Drosophila melanogaster as a tractable eco-environmental model to unravel the toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics

Micro- and nanoplastics have emerged as pervasive environmental pollutants with potential ecotoxicological impacts on various organisms, including the model organismDrosophila melanogaster. Here we comprehensively synthesize current research on the adverse effects of micro- and nanoplastics onDrosophila, highlighting key findings and identifying gaps in the literature. Micro- and nanoplastics can lead to physical damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, genotoxicity, epigenetic changes, apoptosis, and necrosis inDrosophila. Exposure to plastic debris affects nutrient absorption, energy metabolism, and reproductive health, often in a sex-specific manner. For instance, male flies are generally more susceptible to the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics than female flies, showing greater mortality and metabolic disruptions. Furthermore, the combined exposure of plastics with heavy metals can exacerbate toxic effects, leading to enhanced oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and gut damage. While antagonistic effects have been identified particularly with silver compounds, where polystyrene microplastics reduce the bioavailability and toxicity of silver. The adverse effects of plastic particles onDrosophiladepend on size, with smaller particles penetrating deeper into tissues and eliciting stronger toxic responses. The chemical composition of the plastics and the presence of additives also play crucial roles in determining toxicity levels. Chronic exposure to low levels can be as harmful as acute high-dose exposure, highlighting the need for comprehensive, long-term studies to fully understand the ecological and biological impacts of plastic pollution.

EGCG Alleviates the Aging Toxicity Induced by 3-MCPD via IIS Pathway in Caenorhabditis elegans with Abnormal Reproduction and Heat Shock Protein

This study aimed to investigate the mitigation effect of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on aging induced by 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) in Caenorhabditis elegans, evaluate health indicators during the process, and reveal the underlying mechanism through transcriptomics and identification of mutants. The results showed that EGCG alleviated the declined fertility, shortened lifespan, reduced body size, weakened movement, increased reactive oxygen species and lipofuscin, and damaged antioxidative stress response and excessive heat shock proteins caused by 3-MCPD. Transcriptomics study indicated that treatment with 3-MCPD and EGCG altered gene expression, and gene mutants confirmed the involvement of insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway in mediating the process that EGCG alleviated the aging toxicity induced by 3-MCPD. The study showed that EGCG alleviated the aging toxicity induced by 3-MCPD.

Alleviating 3-MCPD-induced male reproductive toxicity: Mechanistic insights and resveratrol intervention

3-Monochloropropane-1, 2-diol (3-MCPD), a food-borne contaminant, is widely regarded as the primary cause of male infertility. At present, identifying a method to improve/reduce the male reproductive toxicity caused by 3-MCPD is important. In our study, we explored the potential application of resveratrol (RSV) in mitigating the adverse effects of 3-MCPD. Using 7-week-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats as animal models, we investigated the impacts and underlying mechanisms of 3-MCPD and RSV on reproductive function. The administration of 3-MCPD led to significant reductions in testicular and epididymal weights, as well as disruptions in spermatogenesis and histological abnormalities. However, co-treatment with RSV and 3-MCPD mitigated these adverse effects. In vitro study, RSV exhibited the ability to reverse the decline in Leydig and Sertoli cell populations inflicted by 3-MCPD treatment. Mechanistically, RSV reduced endoplasmic reticulum stress (PARP), inflammasome activation (NLRP3), and autophagy-mediated lysosome dysfunction (p62 and LC3BII) induced by 3-MCPD. In addition, 3-MCPD treatment increased the expression level of steroidogenesis-related proteins, steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) and CYP11A1, but RSV normalized StAR expression. Moreover, 3-MCPD-induced pro-inflammatory responses were counteracted by RSV treatment, with the cytokine reduction and modulation of CD206 expression, a marker of macrophage activation. These findings indicate that RSV attenuates 3-MCPD-induced reproductive toxicity, highlighting its application potential as an adjuvant agent for male reproductive health.
