Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the effect of thickness on the translucency parameter (TP) and whiteness index for dentistry (WID) of single-shade resin composites compared with a multi-shade resin composite after thermocycling. A total of 100 resin composite samples of five brands (Filtek Z250, Omnichroma, Vittra APS Unique, Zenchroma, and Charisma Diamond One) with thicknesses of 2 mm and 4 mm were prepared (n=10). CIE L*a*b* coordinates were obtained using a spectrophotometer. The resin composite samples were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles. Before and after thermocycling, TP values were calculated with the CIEDE2000 formula, and whiteness values were calculated using the WID. The influence of thickness, resin composite, and aging on these variables was analyzed using the generalized linear model (p<0.05). Omnichroma and Filtek Z250 exhibited, respectively, the highest and the lowest TP00 values compared with the other resin materials (p<0.001). The TP00 values of Zenchroma and Diamond One were similar (p>0.05). Vittra APS Unique had a lower TP than Zenchroma and Diamond One (p<0.001). Before thermocycling, the highest WID showed the combination of Vittra APS Unique with thicknesses of 2 mm (48.33±1.18). After thermocycling, the highest WID was shown in the combination of Vittra APS Unique with thicknesses of 2 mm (45.33±0.55) and 4 mm (46.23±0.94) (p<0.001). After thermocycling, the lowest WID was for the combination of Filtek Z250 with thicknesses 2 mm (21.16±0.93) and 4 mm (20.70±0.91) (p<0.001). The TP and WID values of the resin composites varied across different composites and thicknesses. Single-shade resin composites of different thicknesses demonstrated higher translucency and whiteness values than multi-shade resin composite, both before and after thermocycling.

Abstract
Aim The present study investigated the effects of laser and conventional in-office bleaching, and polishing on the color of stained composite resin. Materials and Methods A microhybrid composite (Clearfil AP-X) and a nanohybrid composite (Grandio) were selected. Twenty-four discs (2 × 10 mm) for each composite were prepared. The samples were immersed in coffee solution (25 g of coffee in 250 mL water) for seven days. Then the samples were divided into three groups (n = 8) and the stains were removed using bleaching (with Opalescence Xtra Boost), diode laser irradiation with Heydent material and a Sof-Lex polishing kit. The L ∗a ∗b ∗ color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer before and after immersion and after stain removal procedures, and the overall color changes (ΔE) were calculated. The data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance. Results In the Clearfil composite resin group, the mean ΔE compared to the baseline using in-office bleaching, laser irradiation, and Sof-Lex polishing kit were 3.31, 3.35, and 4.93, respectively. These values with the Grandio composite resin were 3.31, 6.35, and 4.57, respectively. The highest capacity to remove stains was related to the conventional in-office bleaching method. Grandio composite resin underwent more color changes than Clearfil composite resin significantly (P-value < 0.05). Conclusion Both composite resins exhibited color changes after immersion in the discoloring solution. However, after staining-removing procedures, the ΔE values decreased. Decreases in the ΔE values were not sufficient to restore the color to that before immersion in the discoloring solution with any stain-removing methods.

Abstract
The purpose of the review was to assess the influence of office and home bleaching on the color durability after staining of resin-based composites (RCs) for direct restorations. A web-based search for possibly relevant scientific papers in the English language between January 2013 and August 2022 was conducted in the databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE. In-vitro studies that explored the influence of in-office and other bleaching treatments on the discolored RC for direct restorations in extracted human teeth were included. Case studies, case series, animal studies, systematic reviews, and letters to the editor were not considered. A total of 212 articles from a web-based search and 32 studies from a manual search were retrieved. After removal of duplicate records, 181 titles and abstracts were reviewed for eligibility; 92 were chosen for full-text analysis, and nine in-vitro studies matched the inclusion criteria. The two examiners examined the methodological quality of the selected studies independently based on the study design, methodological soundness, and data analysis. Distinct values were assigned to studies evaluating color variations of stained RC subjected to bleaching agents. The methodological quality scores were expressed as a percentage of the highest possible score based on the established scoring system and categorized as indicating a low, moderate, and high level of evidence. The reversal of color alterations following home and office bleaching was found to be dependent on the RC used. Within the limitations of the in-vitro investigations, it was deduced that the bleaching agents were successful in eliminating stains and improving the durability of the color to near baseline values.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of extrinsic pigmentation on the dimensional stability, hardness, detail reproduction, and color of a silicone after thermocycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty samples of MDX4-4210 silicone (Dow Corning Corporation Medical Products) with intrinsic pink pigment (H-109-P, Factor II) and intrinsic opacifier (TiO) were fabricated. Two groups were created: Group 1-only intrinsic pigmentation (H-109P, Factor II + TiO) (Control); and Group 2-intrinsic (H-109P, Factor II + TiO) and extrinsic (Tan FE - 215, Factor II) pigmentation. The following tests were performed for each group: dimensional stability, Shore A hardness, detail reproduction, and color. Readings for the tests were taken before and after thermocycling (2,000 cycles). For dimensional stability and hardness, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. One-way ANOVA was used for the color test. In case of significant statistical difference, the Tukey test was applied (p <0.05). All samples achieved the same detail reproduction score, therefore, no statistical evaluation was performed. RESULTS For the dimensional stability test, comparing the initial time with the final time, there was a significant contraction in both groups after thermocycling. For the hardness test, comparing the time points, only group 1 showed a significant reduction in hardness after thermocycling. Groups 1 and 2 scored 2 for the detail reproduction test, before and after thermocycling. Comparing group 1 with group 2, there was no significant difference for color change. CONCLUSION Based on the tests performed, extrinsic pigmentation did not show a negative effect on silicone, and therefore it can be indicated. The results of the dimensional, hardness, detail reproduction and color evaluations of the MDX4-4210 silicone were clinically acceptable in all cases in the groups with and without extrinsic pigmentation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effect of activated charcoal toothpaste on the color stability of teeth subjected to tooth bleaching and pigmenting agents. METHODS A total of 120 bovine crowns were randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10) according to two study factors: staining solutions (three levels): saliva (control), coffee, and red wine; and toothpaste (four levels): BPC, Bianco Pro Clinical (Bianco Oral Care) (Control); BIW, Black is White (Curaprox); BCA, Bianco Carbon (Bianco Oral Care); and NAT, Natural Suavetex (Suavetex). The samples were subjected to office bleaching with a 35% hydrogen peroxide-based gel (Whiteness HP Blue, FGM), followed by immersion in the solution for 45 minutes per day and daily toothbrushing for 7 days. The color (ΔE) and luminosity changes (ΔL*) were measured using reflectance spectroscopy (Vita EasyShade). The CIE values (L*, a*, b*) were measured at baseline after bleaching (T0) and immediately after immersion in solution each day (Ti1-Ti7) and after all toothbrushing cycles (Tb1-Tb7). ΔE and ΔL were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The clinically unacceptable level of ΔE > 3.3 was used to evaluate the color change. RESULTS The color change was significantly influenced by the staining solutions and toothpastes (p<0.001). The color change (ΔE) was significantly higher when immersed in wine than in coffee, and lower ΔE values were observed for artificial saliva (control), irrespective of the toothpaste used. In artificial saliva, BPC, BIW, and BCA resulted in significantly lower ΔE values than NAT, which presented a clinically unacceptable level of dental color change (ΔE>3.3). Coffee resulted in a lower (L*) reduction than wine, irrespective of the toothpaste used. CONCLUSION Charcoal toothpastes resulted in a color change on the surface of the tooth enamel (ΔE). The bleaching effect of the charcoal toothpastes and control evaluated in this study partially reduced the color changes on the surface of the tooth enamel caused by staining solutions but was unable to reestablish the measured values to the baseline. For teeth immersed in artificial saliva, the color change was not noticeable in BCA, BIW, and control-BPC (ΔE≥3.3), except for NAT, which showed a significant color change.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to evaluate the optical properties of flowable and injectable composites after polishing, such as translucency (translucency parameter [TP], TP00), opalescence (OP-BW), chroma (C*ab), refractive index (RI), and change in surface roughness (Ra, Rz). Ninety disc-shaped samples were prepared from micro-hybrid, flowable, and injectable composites and divided into 3 groups according to the polishing systems (n=10). The RI was measured with an Abbe refractometer, and optical measurements were performed with a spectrophotometer. The surface roughness was measured with a two-dimensional profilometer. Data were analyzed with the generalized linear model method and two-way analysis of variance. The results showed that the polishing procedure did not significantly impact the RI (p=0.987). Injectable composite had the highest translucency (TP=28.67; TP00=13.49) and opalescence (OP-BW=13.11); showed the lowest C*ab value (17.95). Also, the effects of the composite type and polishing procedure on surface roughness were statistically significant (p=0.047 and p<0.001).

Abstract
Over the previous years of the 20th and 21st centuries, there has been a progression in the field of bonded esthetic restorations. At the present time, the inclination of dentists toward the smart monochromatic shade of composite is flourishing owing to the fact that it decreases the requirement of a range of composite shades, curtails the waste of unconsumed composite shades, lessens chair side interval, abolishes the shade selection, and decreases dependency on shade-selecting methods. Smart monochromatic composite is known to obtain the color of the adjacent tooth structure in which it is placed. Therefore, the current literature elucidates the several features of innovative and revolutionary monochromatic composites including color stability, mechanical and optical properties, and shade-matching capability that could have a positive impact potentially over other resin composites.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to evaluate the effects of charcoal toothpaste on the surface roughness, color stability, and marginal staining of resin composite restorations. METHODS A total of 100 bovine incisors was collected. The crowns were sectioned and randomly divided into 10 groups (n=10) according to two study factors: toothpaste groups and nanoparticle resin composite groups. Five toothpastes-Bianco Pro Clinical (Bianco Oral Care, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil) - Control group; Bianco Carbon (Bianco Oral Care); NAT, Natural Suavetex Carvão Ativado (Suavetex, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil); Nano Action Black Be Emotion (Polishop, Jundiaí, SP, Brazil); and BIW, Black is White (Curaprox, Curaden AG, Kriens, Switzerland)-and two resin composites-Z350XT, Filtek Z350XT (3M Oral Care) and Vittra, Vittra APS (FGM, Joinville, SC, Brazil)-were used. Circular cavities with a diameter of 4 mm and a depth of 1 mm were prepared on the buccal face of the tooth crowns and restored with resin composites. The specimens were subjected to three months of simulated toothbrushing. The surface roughness (right angle [Ra], in micrometers [μm]) of the resin composites was measured before and after toothbrushing in five areas per specimen. The resin composite color and luminosity changes (ΔE and ΔL, respectively) were measured using reflectance spectroscopy (Vita EasyShade). Macro photographs were taken before and after toothbrushing to qualitatively analyze the marginal staining (MSt) of the resin composite restorations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed before and after the simulated toothbrushing. Ra data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures and the Tukey HSD test; MSt was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α=0.05), and the resin composite color change was analyzed using the clinically unacceptable level of ΔE > 3.3. RESULTS Simulated brushing increased Ra irrespective of the resin composite or toothpaste used. No significant differences were found in Ra between the control group and all groups on which the charcoal toothpastes were tested. A clinically unacceptable level of resin composite color change (ΔE>3.3) was found after the use of most charcoal toothpastes. Use of Bianco Carbon resulted in marginal staining similar to that of the control group and was lower than that of the other charcoal toothpastes. Vittra brushed with black toothpaste showed the highest marginal staining. CONCLUSION Use of charcoal toothpaste resulted in Ra values of resin composites similar to those found with conventional toothpastes. Charcoal toothpaste generally resulted in clinical resin composite color changes (ΔE). All charcoal toothpastes, except Bianco Carbon, caused marginal staining of the resin composite restorations.

Abstract
This in vitro study compared the effects of conventional and electronic cigarettes on the aesthetics (color stability and translucency) of two types of composite resins: micro and nano-hybrid. Methods: A total of 120 specimens from two different composite materials Filtek Z250 XT (Nano-hybrid, 3M) and Filtek Z250 (Micro-hybrid, 3M) were divided into four groups (n = 30); shade A2 was used. The samples were exposed to conventional and electronic cigarette smoke via a custom made chamber device. The color values and measurements were recorded using a spectrophotometer before and after the exposure. The color and translucency were evaluated using the three-dimensional CIE Lab. Results: There was a significant change in the color (ΔE) and the translucency parameter (TP) in all of the specimens exposed to electronic cigarettes and conventional cigarettes. The results showed that the highest ΔE mean is for the nano-hybrid composite exposed to conventional cigarettes with 1.74 ΔE while the same material is 0.64 under the electronic cigarettes and the difference is significant with (p < 0.05). The micro-hybrid composite data showed less changes in color under both exposures with 0.85 ΔE mean under the conventional cigarette smoke and 0.48 under the electronic cigarette smoke with (p < 0.004). Conclusions: The conventional cigarette smoke has more effect on the color stability of the composite resins than electronic cigarettes. From a clinical point of view, the effect of smoke exposure on the tested specimens’ color, for the time duration to which the specimens were exposed, were moderate (ΔE < 2). The micro-hybrid composites showed better color stability as compared to the nano-hybrid composites.

Abstract
Shade matching is a common challenge that dentists face during fabrication of esthetic dental restoration. Thus, the aim of the current study was to assess the masking ability of two types of CAD/CAM ceramics for gaining high esthetic prosthesis. This in vitro study used a total sample size of 66 lithium disilicate (LD) and leucite reinforced (LR) CAD/CAM ceramics sub-grouped into three thicknesses: 0.5, 1, and 1.5 mm. Nine shades of natural dentin die materials were prepared as a replica of the underlying tooth structure. The difference in color (ΔE) and translucency parameter (TP) were assessed for both tested ceramics at the three thicknesses. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare the three thicknesses of each ceramic, followed by multiple pairwise comparisons between both ceramics. LR had significantly higher ΔE than LD at all thicknesses used unlike the case in TP. Thickness of 0.5 mm exhibited the highest ΔE and TP, while 1.5 mm thickness showed the lowest ΔE and TP in both ceramics. Increase in ceramic thickness had a great impact on both color masking ability of the underlying tooth structure and its translucency. The higher the ceramic thickness, the better the masking ability and the lower the translucency was reported.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluation of degree of conversion (DC), flexural properties, micro-hardness and color change (ΔE00) of dental resin composite after modification with two types of organo-modified Montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay; an experimentally synthesized polymethyl-methacrylate modified MMT nanoclay (PMMA/MMT), and a commercially available one (Cloisite20A). METHODS MMT was synthesized by sol-gel technique, organo-modified with polymethyl-methacrylate and characterized using EDX, XRD and FTIR. PMMA/MMT and Cloisite20A nanoclay were added to flowable resin composite in 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt% concentrations. Unmodified resin composite was used as control group. DC was assessed by FTIR, flexural properties were tested by three-point bending test using a universal testing machine, micro-hardness was analyzed by Vickers micro-hardness tester and color change (ΔE00) was evaluated using a reflective spectrophotometer. SEM and elemental mapping assessment were performed to evaluate nanoclay distribution in resin composite. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test, in addition to Two-way ANOVA (p ≤ 0.05). Weibull analysis was used to analyze flexural strength results. RESULTS Characterization results revealed successful preparation of PMMA/MMT. DC results showed insignificant difference up to 1 wt% of nanoclay concentration. Addition of 0.5 wt% of PMMA/MMT significantly increased flexural properties, while addition of 1.5 wt% of PMMA/MMT significantly decreased flexural properties. Micro-hardness results revealed a significant increase in PMMA/MMT groups in all tested concentrations. ΔE00 results showed that color change was clinically acceptable on adding 0.5 wt% nanoclay. CONCLUSION PMMA/MMT in 0.5 wt% is a promising nanofiller for resin composite that significantly enhanced flexural strength and micro-hardness without compromising DC and color.

Abstract
Objective
The aim of this study is to evaluate the color alteration and shore A hardness of a medical silicone with extrinsic pigmentation, before and after accelerated aging.
Materials and Methods
Twenty samples (Silastic Q7–4735) were made with an intrinsic pigmentation. This intrinsic pigmentation was composed of a pink pigment (H-109-P, Factor II) and an opacifier (ZnO). All samples had standardized dimensions (45-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness). Half of the 20 samples manufactured subsequently received an extrinsic pigment (Tan FE–215, Factor II). Therefore, two groups were created (
n
= 10): Group 1, group with intrinsic pigmentation and without extrinsic pigmentation (control) and Group 2, group with intrinsic and extrinsic pigmentation. Samples were submitted to color and Shore A hardness tests, before and after 1,008 hours of aging.
Statistical Analysis
Color alteration data were submitted to Student’s
t
-test (
α
= 0.05). Shore A hardness data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (
α
= 0.05).
Results
The incorporation of the extrinsic pigment on the silicone did not affect its color (ΔE) when the two groups were compared (
p
= 0.232). Regarding the hardness test, the interaction between group and period did not interfere with the hardness results(
p
=0.599). However, the period factor showed that there was a reduction in the hardness of the silicone after aging (
p
< 0.05).
Conclusion
In this study, all the hardness and color results of the silicone used were clinically acceptable, regardless of the presence of extrinsic pigmentation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exceptional optical properties characterize teeth. As such, an esthetic restorative material should enable the dental professional to imitate the optical properties of natural teeth accurately. IPS Empress Direct was introduced to the market with the claim that it can mimic optically dental tissues with superior clinical performance. AIM To evaluate the ability of IPS Empress Direct to mimic tooth appearance and color and resist staining. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three disc specimens were prepared for each shade of enamel and dentin of Lucirin-based composite, IPS Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent) (A1, A2, A3, B1, and B2) (total of 60). The specimens were submitted to colorimetric evaluation in comparison after immersion in 10 different solutions (coffee, coffee with sugar, coffee with milk, red tea, red tea with sugar, red tea with milk, tomato juice, pomegranate juice, coke, and distilled water as a control group) for 4 weeks using spectrophotometric analysis. RESULTS After plotting the data and conducting linear regression analyses, IPS Empress showed high potential in mimicking the optical properties of natural tooth color according to the CIE color space. Three solutions showed a change in color higher than 3, coffee, coffee with sugar, and red tea. All other solution showed changes in color that are acceptable clinically. CONCLUSION IPS Empress Direct can satisfactory mimic teeth appearance and color while manifesting high stability of color resisting staining upon clinical aging.
