Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the correlation between the level of 25(OH)D in peripheral blood and cognitive function in patients with epilepsy, and to find the biomarkers of epilepsy complicated with cognitive dysfunction. METHODS 68 patients with epilepsy and 30 healthy subjects were included in this study. The 25(OH)D level in peripheral blood of all subjects was detected and the score of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale was performed. The patients with epilepsy were divided into a cognitively normal group (36 cases) and a cognitively impaired group (32 cases) according to the scale score. The inter-group scale score and 25(OH)D level were compared, and the correlation was analyzed. RESULTS The levels of 25(OH)D and MOCA in epileptic group were significantly lower than those in healthy control group. The 25(OH)D and MOCA of the cognitively impaired group were significantly lower than those of the cognitively normal group. Logistic regression analysis indicated that serum 25(OH)D level was an independent risk factor for epilepsy combined with cognitive impairment (OR = 0.704, P = 0.014). The area under ROC curve of serum 25(OH)D for diagnosis of epilepsy combined with cognitive impairment was 0.924 (95 %CI 0.866,0.981), the critical value was 34.50 nmol/L, the sensitivity was 0.778, and the specificity was 0.906. CONCLUSION Decreased levels of vitamin D are associated with cognitive impairment associated with epilepsy, and it may be a biomarker for early screening of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Epilepsy is one of the most common and devastating neurological disorders that causes unprovoked, recurrent seizures arising from excessive synchronized neuronal discharging. Although antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) reduce the frequency of epilepsy seizures, drug-refractory epileptic patients exert resistance to AEDs, resulting in treatment difficulty. Moreover, pharmacological treatments do not show satisfactory results in response to photosensitive epilepsy. In the recent era, light therapy emerged as a potential non-pharmacological approach for treating various diseases, including depression, seasonal affective disorders, migraine, pain, and others. Several studies have also shown the potential of light therapy in treating epilepsy. In addition, Red light evokes epilepsy seizures. Blue lenses filter the red light and significantly suppress the frequency of epilepsy seizures. However, the effects of green light on the frequency of epileptic seizures are not studied yet. In addition, light-activated gene therapy or optogenetics also emerged as a possible option for epilepsy treatment. Animal models have shown the therapeutic possibilities of optogenetics and light therapy; however, human studies addressing this possibility are still vague. This review provides the beneficial effects of light in reducing seizure frequency in epilepsy patients. A limited number of studies have been reported so far; therefore, light therapy for treating epilepsy requires more studies on animal models to provide precise results of light effects on seizures.

Abstract
Neonatal seizures are common in newborn infants after birth asphyxia. They occur more frequently in male than female neonates, but it is not known whether sex also affects seizure severity or duration. Furthermore, although stress and diurnal, ultradian, circadian, or multidien cycles are known to affect epileptic seizures in adults, their potential impact on neonatal seizures is not understood. This prompted us to examine the effects of season, daytime, sex, and stress on neonatal seizures in a rat model of birth asphyxia. Seizures monitored in 176 rat pups exposed to asphyxia on 40 experimental days performed over 3 years were evaluated. All rat pups exhibited seizures when exposed to asphyxia at postnatal day 11 (P11), which in terms of cortical development corresponds to term human babies. A first examination of these data indicated a seasonal variation, with the highest seizure severity in the spring. Sex and daytime did not affect seizure characteristics. However, when rat pups were subdivided into animals that were exposed to acute (short-term) stress after asphyxia (restraint and i.p. injection of vehicle) and animals that were not exposed to this stress, the seizures in stress-exposed rats were more severe but less frequent. Acute stress induced an increase in hippocampal microglia density in sham-exposed rat pups, which may have an additive effect on microglia activation induced by asphyxia. When seasonal data were separately analyzed for stress-exposed vs. non-stress-exposed rat pups, no significant seasonal variation was observed. This study illustrates that without a detailed analysis of all factors, the data would have erroneously indicated significant seasonal variability in the severity of neonatal seizures. Instead, the study demonstrates that even mild, short-lasting postnatal stress has a profound effect on asphyxia-induced seizures, most likely by increasing the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. It will be interesting to examine how postnatal stress affects the treatment and adverse outcomes of birth asphyxia and neonatal seizures in the rat model used here.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple sclerosis risk has been shown to have seasonal variations that are more pronounced in higher latitudes. However, this phenomenon has not been adequately studied near the Equator. OBJECTIVE To explore the risk of multiple sclerosis associated with month, season of birth, and sunlight exposure variables in Colombia. METHODS In this case-control study, 668 multiple sclerosis cases were matched to 2672 controls by sex and age. Association of multiple sclerosis with each month/season of birth and sunlight exposure variables was estimated with multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression and ecological regression models, respectively. Seasonality in the births of multiple sclerosis was assessed with a non-parametric seasonality test. RESULTS We found a higher probability of multiple sclerosis in September (0.25; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.21-0.31) and lower in March (0.15; 95% CI = 0.10-0.18), which turned non-significant after a multiple comparisons test. Sunlight exposure variables had no significant effect on the risk of MS, and the tests of seasonality in the births of MS did not show significant results. CONCLUSION Our results show no seasonality in the risk of multiple sclerosis near the Equator, supporting the hypothesis that this phenomenon is latitude dependent.

Abstract
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) was applied to evaluate seasonal variations of the consumption of pharmaceuticals (i.e. antibiotics, NSAIDs, antiepileptics, antihypertensives and others), caffeine, alcohol and nicotine in Latvia throughout 2021. In addition, weekly variation of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol consumption was investigated. Pronounced seasonality was observed in the consumption of antibiotics and decongestants, as well as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Correlation with COVID-19 statistics was observed in the case of macrolide antibiotics and antiasthmatic salbutamol. Comparison of the estimated consumption values obtained using the WBE approach and the statistics revealed that the majority of compounds data are in good agreement except angiotensin II receptor blocker group antihypertensives where the most overestimated consumption values were observed.

Abstract
The association between birth month and neurodevelopmental or psychiatric disorders has been investigated in a number of previous studies; however, the results have been inconsistent. This study investigated the association between birth month and child gross motor development at 6 and 12 months of age in a large cohort of infants (n = 72,203) participating in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS). Gross motor development was assessed using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3). At 6 months and 12 months, 20.7% and 14.2%, respectively, had ASQ-3 indications of gross motor problems. Birth month was strongly associated with gross motor development at both time points, particularly at 6 months. Summer-born infants had the worst outcomes at both 6 months and 12 months of age. This outcome applied to the ASQ-3 score itself and to the adjusted Relative Risk (aRR), with the highest aRRs (relative to January-born) among August-born (aRR 2.51; 95%CI 2.27–2.78 at 6 months), and June-born (aRR 1.84; 95%CI 1.63–2.09 at 12 months). Boys had better scores than girls both at 6 and 12 months of age. We speculate that seasonal factors—such as maternal vitamin D deficiency and influenza infection—affecting the fetus in early pregnancy might account for the findings.

Abstract
To evaluate if valproic acid (VPA) therapy is associated with vitamin D deficiency among infants and toddlers with epilepsy, a cross-sectional clinical study was conducted in 25 children with epilepsy taking VPA. Blood levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] and plasma VPA level were measured at 1- to 3-month intervals. At the initial and final measurements, vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was recognized in 8 (32%) and 12 (42%), respectively. In girls, a decreasing trend in serum 25(OH)D levels (P<0.05) was observed. Polytherapy had a significant negative effect on the longitudinal change of 25(OH)D (P<0.05) in girls. In conclusion, our study indicates that a high proportion of girls after VPA therapy had hypovitaminosis D.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Epilepsy is a nervous system abnormality that may be caused by unknown exposures during fetal development. Studies have shown neuroprotective effects of early exposure to vitamin D in other neurological disorders, and seasonal variation in birth of children with epilepsy. We aimed to investigate if neonatal 25(OH)D3 was associated with risk of childhood epilepsy. METHODS This case-cohort study compared neonatal 25(OH)D3 levels from children with epilepsy (n = 403) and a random selected cohort of controls (n = 1163), assessing the hazard of first epilepsy diagnosis between 1 and 4 years of age from a weighted Cox proportional hazard model. Analyses were adjusted for parental education, maternal age, maternal epilepsy, maternal ethnicity, and gestational age, and additionally for season of birth and smoking during pregnancy. RESULTS The mean (standard deviation [SD]) of neonatal 25(OH)D3 levels were 30.8(19.6) nmol/L among cases and 28.5(19.4) nmol/L among the cohort. The hazard ratio (HR) of epilepsy was in a dose-response pattern higher among children from the highest neonatal 25(OH)D3 quintiles (P-trend = .004). Results were unchanged after including season of birth in the analysis, where a significantly higher HR of epilepsy was observed among children in the two highest quintiles compared to children in the lowest quintile (Q4: HRadj 1.62, 95% CI 1.07-2.47 and Q5: HRadj 1.86, 95% CI 1.21-2.86). SIGNIFICANCE In this study, the risk of childhood epilepsy increased with neonatal 25(OH)D3 categories in a dose-response pattern, suggesting an association between a high neonatal 25(OH)D3 and the risk of childhood epilepsy. Considering that adjusting for season of birth strengthened the results, we conclude that maternal intake of vitamin D, and not vitamin D from sun exposure, was the vitamin D source associated with epilepsy. Although we cannot, in the present study, control for compounds in the diet like pollutants or heavy metals, which may correlate with dietary vitamin D, future studies investigating fetal origin of epilepsy should focus on compounds correlating with vitamin D.

The purpose of this paper was to compare seasonal variations in the incidence of cerebral palsy (CP) in Podlaskie Province, Poland, between 1990-1999 (study 2005) and 2000-2014 (study 2017) in a retrospective case-controlled study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were obtained from the hospital database. We compared CP births between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1999, n = 212 (116 boys, 96 girls) and January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2014, n = 205 (114 boys, 91 girls). We used Cosinor analysis to examine the seasonality of CP births. RESULTS The highest number of CP births occurred in spring and the lowest in winter, with intermediate values in summer and autumn. This seasonal pattern was significant for spring vs. winter. The peaks in the numbers of CP births occurred in May and August; the lowest numbers of CP births occurred in February, December, and November. In the 2017 study, we observed a slight increase in spastic tetraplegia and a decrease in mixed CP. No significant corrections between mean temperature and Apgar score, low birth weight, and asphyxia were found. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirmed the existence of seasonal patterns for CP births.

Abstract
Vitamin D has been considered as neurosteroid, and its pivotal role in neuroprotection, brain development, and immunomodulation has been noticed in studies; however, our knowledge regarding its role in neurological disorders is still developing. The potential role of vitamin D in the pathophysiology and treatment of epilepsy, as one the most prevalent neurological disorders, has received less attention in recent years. In this article, we review the possible relationship between vitamin D and epilepsy from different aspects, including the action mechanism of vitamin D in the central nervous system and ecological and epidemiological findings. We also present the outcome of studies that evaluated the level of vitamin D and the impact of administrating vitamin D in epileptic patients or animal subjects. We also review the current evidence on interactions between vitamin D and antiepileptic drugs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated the seasonal pattern in births of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and mesial temporal sclerosis. We hypothesized that the seasonal pattern in births of these patients is different from that in the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective study, all patients who were evaluated for epilepsy surgery at Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Thomas Jefferson, Philadelphia, USA, between 1986 and 2014 and had a diagnosis of mesial temporal sclerosis (made by definite imaging findings of atrophy and/or sclerosis) were included. The seasonality in births of patients was compared with the seasonal pattern in the live births of the general population from Pennsylvania State. RESULTS Two hundred and eighty-two patients (146 females and 136 males) were studied. The seasonality pattern in birth of patients was not statistically different from that in the general population. CONCLUSIONS The observed contradictory findings among various studies indicate the need for further studies to elucidate whether season of birth brings the possibility of acquiring various epilepsy syndromes in the future. To investigate any possible association between season of birth and epilepsy, we suggest avoid pooling all patients with epilepsy together.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent throughout the world, and growing evidence supports a requirement for optimal vitamin D levels for the healthy developing and adult brain. Vitamin D has important roles in proliferation and differentiation, calcium signaling within the brain, and neurotrophic and neuroprotective actions; it may also alter neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity. Recent experimental studies highlight the impact that vitamin D deficiency has on brain function in health and disease. In addition, results from recent animal studies suggest that vitamin D deficiency during adulthood may exacerbate underlying brain disorders and/or worsen recovery from brain stressors. An increasing number of epidemiological studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Vitamin D supplementation is readily available and affordable, and this review highlights the need for further research.

Abstract
Several disorders, both systemic and those of the nervous system, have been linked with vitamin D deficiency. Neurological disorders with a vitamin D link include but are not limited to multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer and Parkinson disease, as well as cerebrovascular disorders. Epilepsy which is the second leading neurological disorder received much less attention. We review evidence supporting a link between vitamin D and epilepsy including those coming from ecological as well as interventional and animal studies. We also assess the literature on the interaction between antiepileptic drugs and vitamin D. Converging evidence indicates a role for vitamin D deficiency in the pathophysiology of epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Birth season has well-known effects on neuropsychiatric disorders, and may also influence genotype distribution by possibly influencing chance of conception via parental idiosyncratic conception patterns or survival of foetuses or infants. The 5-HTTLPR is associated with phenomena including affective temperaments or suicide which are also associated with birth season. Our aim was to investigate the association of 5-HTTLPR genotype and birth season in a healthy female population. METHODS Birth date and 5-HTTLPR genotype was determined for 327 psychiatrically healthy women. The association between presence of s allele and time of birth was analysed using generalized linear models. RESULTS A significant association between s allele frequency and time of birth was detected. S allele carrier frequency was marginally significantly higher in July borns and significantly lower in autumn borns. LIMITATIONS We investigated an adult sample so genotype frequency data do not reflect birth frequencies. Our sample consisted exclusively of females. CONCLUSIONS There is no clear explanation for the observed association, although idiosyncratic parental conception patterns, the association of 5-HTTLPR with sudden infant/intrauterine death, or other s allele-mediated behaviours may play a role. Our results are strikingly parallel with earlier data reporting a higher risk of completed suicide in July borns, and higher scores of July borns and lower scores of autumn borns on certain affective temperament scales, both of which are also associated with the s allele of 5-HTTLPR. Thus our results may add to the growing body of evidence regarding the etiological background of affective disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autism incidence and prevalence have increased dramatically in the last two decades. The autism caseload in California increased 600% between 1992 and 2006, yet there is little consensus as to the cause. Studying the seasonality of conceptions of children later diagnosed with autism may yield clues to potential etiological drivers. OBJECTIVE To assess if the conceptions of children later diagnosed with autism cluster temporally in a systematic manner and whether any pattern of temporal clustering persists over time. METHOD We searched for seasonality in conceptions of children later diagnosed with autism by applying a one-dimensional scan statistic with adaptive temporal windows on case and control population data from California for 1992 through 2000. We tested for potential confounding effects from known risk factors using logistic regression models. RESULTS There is a consistent but decreasing seasonal pattern in the risk of conceiving a child later diagnosed with autism in November for the first half of the study period. Temporal clustering of autism conceptions is not an artifact of composition with respect to known risk factors for autism such as socio-economic status. CONCLUSION There is some evidence of seasonality in the risk of conceiving a child later diagnosed with autism. Searches for environmental factors related to autism should allow for the possibility of risk factors or etiological drivers that are seasonally patterned and that appear and remain salient for a discrete number of years.

Abstract
Background Maternal infection during pregnancy may be a risk factor for epilepsy in offspring. Use of antibiotics is a valid marker of infection. Methodology/Principal Findings To examine the relationship between maternal infection during pregnancy and risk of childhood epilepsy we conducted a historical cohort study of singletons born in northern Denmark from 1998 through 2008 who survived ≥29 days. We used population-based medical databases to ascertain maternal use of antibiotics or hospital contacts with infection during pregnancy, as well as first-time hospital contacts with a diagnosis of epilepsy among offspring. We compared incidence rates (IR) of epilepsy among children of mothers with and without infection during pregnancy. We examined the outcome according to trimester of exposure, type of antibiotic, and total number of prescriptions, using Poisson regression to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) while adjusting for covariates. Among 191 383 children in the cohort, 948 (0.5%) were hospitalised or had an outpatient visit for epilepsy during follow-up, yielding an IR of 91 per 100 000 person-years (PY). The five-year cumulative incidence of epilepsy was 4.5 per 1000 children. Among children exposed prenatally to maternal infection, the IR was 117 per 100 000 PY, with an adjusted IRR of 1.40 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22–1.61), compared with unexposed children. The association was unaffected by trimester of exposure, antibiotic type, or prescription count. Conclusions/Significance Prenatal exposure to maternal infection is associated with an increased risk of epilepsy in childhood. The similarity of estimates across types of antibiotics suggests that processes common to all infections underlie this outcome, rather than specific pathogens or drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies indicate a significant association between birth season and personality and neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of our present study was to investigate the association between affective temperaments and season of birth in a nonclinical sample. METHODS 366 university students completed the standardized Hungarian version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Auto-questionnaire (TEMPS-A). Ordinary Least Squares regression was applied to explain the relationship between TEMPS-A subscale and birth season of the respondents. RESULTS We found a significant association between temperament scores and birth season in the case of the Hyperthymic, Cyclothymic, Irritable and Depressive temperaments, while no significant results emerged for the Anxious temperament. LIMITATIONS The relatively small sample size, especially in the case of seasonal and monthly subsamples limits generalization of our results. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the evidence that there is a strong association between season of birth and personality, extending the results to affective temperaments as well. Furthermore, our results are in line with clinical observations concerning the seasonal variation of onset and hospitalization due to affective episodes. This is especially important, since affective temperaments are conceived as the subaffective and subclinical manifestations of major and minor affective disorders indicating a risk for the development of these disorders and also exerting a possible pathoplastic effect, thus our results also have clinical significance.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies on premodern and modern Western societies indicate that birth season may influence female reproduction. Nothing is known, however, about this effect in developing economies. Many of the latter are characterised by tropical climates with a rainy season associated with lower food availability and a greater prevalence of infectious diseases. We therefore predict that an association between birth month and reproductive output, if it exists, should be related to the rainy season. To test this prediction, we analysed census data of Vietnam obtained from IPUMS-International (Vietnam 1999 Population and Housing Census). Based on 493,853 women born between 1950 and 1977 and thus aged 22 to 49 years, we found that the time series of mean offspring count per month of birth has a highly significant period of 12 months (power = 46.871, P < 0.00001). Our results further indicate that the 12-month periodic signal has a maximum in July and a minimum in January. Accordingly, the peak corresponds to birth during the rainy season, the low if the third pregnancy month concurs with the rainy season. The month of birth is therefore clearly associated with the later reproductive performance of Vietnamese women, strongly supporting the assumption that environmental and maternal conditions during early development exert long-term effects on reproductive functioning. Provided the rainy season adversely affects developmental processes due to inadequate food and/or high infection risk, the association reported here points to a critical period of reproductive development during early pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies indicate that the month of birth affects later reproductive output of women in the Northern hemisphere. METHODS To investigate whether a comparable but time-shifted effect is also present in the Southern hemisphere where the seasonal variation of the environment is reversed, we analysed the association between birth month and offspring count in post-reproductive New Zealand women. We further examined whether this association differed with the hemisphere of birth as well as the socio-economic background. RESULTS We find that the association between birth month and offspring count of New Zealand women born in the Southern, albeit not Northern, hemisphere is a mirror image of the pattern reported from Austrian women: on average, women born during the Southern hemisphere summer months have fewer children than women born in winter. This association is highly significant within the lowest family income category but insignificant within higher family income categories. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence for a causal link between the seasonality of the environment during the pre- and perinatal period and offspring count of women. It further indicates that the main contribution of the birth month effect found in the present study comes from the lowest family income category.
