Abstract
A membrane-based electrodialytic desalter has been developed for the selective removal of buffer/salt constituents from a fluid stream while retaining larger charged molecules such as proteins prior to mass spectrometric (MS) detection. The salts are deleterious to MS causing signal suppression, formation of adducts, and eventual contamination of the inlet. The new device uses dialysis membranes (DMs) paired with ion exchange membranes (IEMs) flanking the carrier flow channel in a planar configuration. The DMs contact the carrier channel preventing adsorptive losses of large, charged molecules to the IEMs. Ions are removed under an applied electric field using four pairs of electrodes along the flow channel. Removal of both anions and cations is more energy intensive than conversion of a suitable MS friendly salt into its respective acid or base, for example, ammonium acetate into acetic acid. The energetics and optimal voltage profiles for both scenarios have been thoroughly investigated. The DMs resulted in nonlinear increases in energy required for desalting over standard IEM devices due to electroosmotic flow of water into the interstitial space between the membranes. For a device channel with nominal volume of 15.2 μL, a maximum concentration of 200 mM ammonium acetate flowing at 0.25 mL/min was converted into acetic acid. Recovery of bovine serum albumin measured at 280 nm was 67%-96% at tested salt concentrations, and dispersion volumes were less than 200 μL2 and may be suitable for coupling to liquid chromatography.

Abstract
Commercial grade sulfonated-Polyethersulfone (S-PES) and functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube (f-MWCNT)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanocomposites (NCs) were used to enhance and optimize the antifouling, protein resistance and protein separation properties of the S-PES ultrafiltration membranes. The polarities of sulfonic groups of S-PES, carbonyl carbon of pyrrolidone, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of f-MWCNT in the membrane composition helped to strongly bind each other through hydrogen bonding, as shown by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These binding forces greatly reduced the leaching of NCs and developed long finger-like projection, as confirmed by elution ratio and cross-sectional studies of the membranes via field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The contact angle was reduced up to 48% more than pristine PES. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the various parameters of surface roughness with 3d diagrams, while grain analysis of membrane surface provided a quantitative estimation about volume, area, perimeter, length, radius and diameter. The NCs/S-PES enhanced the flux rate with an impressive (80–84%) flux recovery ratio and (58–62%) reversible resistance (Rr) value in situ, with 60% and 54.4% lesser dynamic and static protein adsorption. The best performing membrane were reported to remove 31.8%, 66.3%, 83.6% and 99.9% for lysozyme-(14.6 kDa), trypsin-(20 kDa), pepsin-(34.6 kDa) and bovine serum albumin (BSA-66 kDa), respectively.

Abstract
Proteins are one of the primary building blocks that have significant functional properties to be applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. Proteins could be beneficial in their concentrated products or isolates, of which membrane-based filtration methods such as ultrafiltration (UF) encompass application in broad spectra of protein sources. More importantly, selective enrichment by UF is of immense interest due to the presence of antinutrients that may dominate their perspicuous bioactivities. UF process is primarily obstructed by concentration polarization and fouling; in turn, a trade-off between productivity and selectivity emerges, especially when pure isolates are an ultimate goal. Several factors such as operating conditions and membrane equipment could leverage those pervasive contributions; therefore, UF protocols should be optimized for each unique protein mixture and mode of configuration. For instance, employing charged UF membranes or combining UF membranes with electrodialysis enables efficient separation of proteins with a similar molecular weight, which is hard to achieve by the conventional UF membrane. Meanwhile, some proposed strategies, such as utilizing ultrasonic waves, tuning operating conditions, and modifying membrane surfaces, can effectively mitigate fouling issues. A plethora of advancements in UF, from their membrane material modification to the arrangement of new configurations, contribute to the quest to actualize promising potentials of protein separation by UF, and they are reviewed in this paper.

Abstract
Filtration membranes (FMs) are an integral part of electrodialysis with filtration membranes (EDFM), a green and promising technology for bioactive peptide fractionation. Therefore, it is paramount to understand how physicochemical properties of FMs impact global and selective peptide migration to anionic (A−RC) and cationic (C+RC) peptide recovery compartments during their simultaneous separation by EDFM. In this context, six polyether sulfone (PES) membranes with molecular weight cut-offs (MWCO) of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 300 kDa were characterized and used during EDFM to separate peptides from a complex whey protein hydrolysate. Surface charge, roughness, thickness and surface/pores nature of studied PES membranes were similar with small differences in conductivity, porosity and pore size distribution. Interestingly, global peptides migration to both recovery compartments increased linearly as a function of MWCO. However, peptide selectivity changed according to the recovery compartments and/or the peptide’s charge and MW with an increase in MWCO of FMs. Indeed, in A−RC, the relative abundance (RA) of peptides having low negative charge and MW (IDALNENK and VLVLDTDYK) decreased (45% to 19%) with an increase in MWCO, while the opposite for peptides having high negative charge and MW (TPEVDDEALEK, TPEVDDEALEKFDK & VYVEELKPTPEGDLEILLQK) (increased from 16% to 43%). Concurrently, in C+RC, regardless of MWCO used, the highest RA was observed for peptides having low positive charge and MW (IPAVFK & ALPMHIR). It was the first time that the significant impact of charge, MWCO and pore size distribution of PES membranes on a wide range of MWCO was demonstrated on EDFM performances.

Abstract
Electrodialysis (ED) with ion-exchange membranes is a promising method for the extraction of phosphates from municipal and other wastewater in order to obtain cheap mineral fertilizers. Phosphorus is transported through an anion-exchange membrane (AEM) by anions of phosphoric acid. However, which phosphoric acid anions carry the phosphorus in the membrane and the boundary solution, that is, the mechanism of phosphorus transport, is not yet clear. Some authors report an unexpectedly low current efficiency of this process and high energy consumption. In this paper, we report the partial currents of H2PO4-, HPO42-, and PO43- through Neosepta AMX and Fujifilm AEM Type X membranes, as well as the partial currents of H2PO4- and H+ ions through a depleted diffusion layer of a 0.02 M NaH2PO4 feed solution measured as functions of the applied potential difference across the membrane under study. It was shown that the fraction of the current transported by anions through AEMs depend on the total current density/potential difference. This was due to the fact that the pH of the internal solution in the membrane increases with the growing current due to the increasing concentration polarization (a lower electrolyte concentration at the membrane surface leads to higher pH shift in the membrane). The HPO42- ions contributed to the charge transfer even when a low current passed through the membrane; with an increasing current, the contribution of the HPO42- ions grew, and when the current was about 2.5 ilimLev (ilimLev was the theoretical limiting current density), the PO43- ions started to carry the charge through the membrane. However, in the feed solution, the pH was 4.6 and only H2PO4- ions were present. When H2PO4- ions entered the membrane, a part of them transformed into doubly and triply charged anions; the H+ ions were released in this transformation and returned to the depleted diffusion layer. Thus, the phosphorus total flux, jP (equal to the sum of the fluxes of all phosphorus-bearing species) was limited by the H2PO4- transport from the bulk of feed solution to the membrane surface. The value of jP was close to ilimLev/F (F is the Faraday constant). A slight excess of jP over ilimLev/F was observed, which is due to the electroconvection and exaltation effects. The visualization showed that electroconvection in the studied systems was essentially weaker than in systems with strong electrolytes, such as NaCl.
