Mechanism of quinone mediators modified polyurethane foam for enhanced nitrobenzene reduction and denitrification

The nitrobenzene (NB) reduction and denitrification performance of the immobilized biofilm (I-BF) reactors based on 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonyl chloride (ASC) modified polyurethane foam (PUF-ASC) carriers were investigated. Experiments demonstrated that the quinone mediators enhanced NB reduction and denitrification performance. The NB reduction rates increased by 1.46, while the NO3--N removal rates increased by 1.55 times in the PUF-0.1ASC system. The quinone mediators promote extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion. Electrochemical tests indicated that quinone mediators enhanced the electron transfer of biofilm systems. NADH generation was accelerated and microbial electron transport system activity (ETSA) was promoted. The abundance of genera with electrochemical activity, NB degradation and denitrification ability (Pseudomonas sp., Diaphorobate sp., and Acinetobacter sp.) increased. Metabolic pathways relating to NO3--N and NB reduction were uploaded. In conclusion, electron acquisition by NO3--N and NB was facilitated, bacterial community structure and metabolic pathways were affected by the quinone mediators.

Insights into biofilm carriers for biological wastewater treatment processes: Current state-of-the-art, challenges, and opportunities

Biofilm carriers play an important role in attached growth systems for wastewater treatment processes. This study systematically summarizes the traditional and novel biofilm carriers utilized in biofilm-based wastewater treatment technology. The advantages and disadvantages of traditional biofilm carriers are evaluated and discussed in light of basic property, biocompatibility and applicability. The characteristics, applications performance, and mechanism of novel carriers (including slow-release carriers, hydrophilic/electrophilic modified carriers, magnetic carriers and redox mediator carriers) in wastewater biological treatment were deeply analyzed. Slow release biofilm carriers are used to provide a solid substrate and electron donor for the growth of microorganisms and denitrification for anoxic and/or anaerobic bioreactors. Carriers with hydrophilic/electrophilic modified surface are applied for promoting biofilm formation. Magnetic materials-based carriers are employed to shorten the start-up time of bioreactor. Biofilm carriers acting as redox mediators are used to accelerate biotransformation of recalcitrant pollutants in industrial wastewater.

Mechanism of anaerobic bio-reduction of azo dye assisted with lawsone-immobilized activated carbon

Lawsone redox (LQ) mediator was covalently bound to granular activated carbon (GAC) by Fischer esterification. A high LQ adsorption capacity on GAC was achieved (∼230 mg/g), and desorption studies showed strong chemical stability. Furthermore, kinetic experiments with solid-phase redox mediator (RM) and their controls (soluble RM, GAC and anaerobic sludge) were tested for decolorization of congo red dye at initial concentration of 175 mg/L. Benzidine, a by-product of complete congo red reduction, was also measured by HPLC analysis along the kinetic experiments. The highest percentage of decolorization after 24 h of incubation was achieved in cultures with soluble (77%) and immobilized (70%) LQ. In contrast, low decolorization efficiency was reached in anaerobic bio-reduction assays with unmodified GAC (47%) and anaerobic sludge (28%) after 24 h. Removal of congo red by adsorption onto LQ-GAC was negligible. The rate of benzidine production was slower than decolorization rate, suggesting that one azo bond of congo red is selectively broke and followed by a slower breaking of the second azo bond, consequently, appearance of benzidine in solution. These issues could be attributed to the steric rearrangement and the inhibitory effects of the produced aromatic amines in the biotransformation process.
