Synergetic effect of the mineralization of organic contaminants by a combined use of permanganate and peroxymonosulfate

The synergistic effect of oxidant-peroxide coupling systems for water and wastewater treatments

With the growing complexity and severity of water pollution, it has become increasingly challenging to effectively remove contaminants or inactivate microorganisms just by traditional chemical oxidants such as O3, chlorine, Fe(VI) and Mn(VII). Up till now, numerous studies have indicated that these oxidants in combination with peroxides (i.e., hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), peracetic acid (PAA) and periodate (PI)) exhibited excellent synergistic oxidation. This paper provided a comprehensive review on the combination of aforementioned oxidant-peroxide applied in water and wastewater treatments. From one aspect, the paper thoroughly elucidated the synergy mechanism of each oxidant-peroxide combination in turn. Among these combinations, H2O2 or PMS generally performed as the activator of four traditional oxidants above to accelerate reactive species generation and therein various reaction mechanisms, including electron transfer, O atom abstraction and oxo ligand substitution, were involved. In addition, although neither PAA nor PI was able to directly activate Fe(VI) and Mn(VII), they could act as the stabilizer of intermediate reactive iron/manganese species to improve the latter utilization efficiency. From another aspect, this paper summarized the influence of water quality parameters, such as pH, inorganic ions and natural organic matter (NOM), on the oxidation performance of most combined systems. Finally, this paper highlighted knowledge gaps and identified areas that require further research.

Insights into the potential applications of permanganate/peroxymonosulfate systems: enhancement via amorphous MnO2, effects of water matrices, and optimization using response surface methodology

In this study, we developed a novel self-catalytic oxidation system involving peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and permanganate (KMnO4), named as CUPP, to efficiently mineralize sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in groundwater. It was found that amorphous MnO2 derived from the in situ reduction of KMnO4 can directly adsorb HSO5-, a complex hydroxyl group, mediate the internal disproportionation reaction of HSO5- with the manganese complex, and effectively activate PMS, thereby promoting the oxidation of SMX and its degradation intermediates through sulfonate radiation. Furthermore, by using electron spin resonance (EPR), HPLC/MS full scan, and response surface methodology, the coexistence of HO˙, SO4-˙, O2-˙, 1O2, and active chlorine (Cl2, HOCl) in the CUPP system was confirmed. A total of 24 intermediate products were detected, and four possible degradation pathways were identified for SMX. In addition, it was found that the CUPP system has a strong impact resistance to pH variations, groundwater anions, and natural organic matter stress. Undoubtedly, the CUPP system presents an innovative approach for the degradation of various emerging organic pollutants in groundwater.

Trace Cu(II)-Mediated Selective Oxidation of Benzothiazole: The Predominance of Sequential Cu(II)-Cu(I)-Cu(III) Valence Transition and Dissolved Oxygen

Trace Cu(II), which inherently exists in soil and some water/wastewater, can trigger persulfate oxidation of some pollutants, but the oxidation capability and mechanism are not well understood, especially toward refractory pollutants. We report in this research that benzothiazole (BTH), a universal refractory pollutant typically originating from tire leachates and various industrial wastewater, can be facilely and selectively removed by peroxydisulfate (PDS) with an equimolar BTH/PDS stoichiometry in the presence of environmental-relevant contents of Cu(II) (below several micromoles). Comprehensive scavenging tests, electron spin resonance analysis, spectroscopy characterization, and electrochemical analysis, revealed that PDS first reduces the BTH-coordinated Cu(II) to Cu(I) and then oxidizes Cu(I) to high-valent Cu(III), which accounts for the BTH degradation. Moreover, once the reaction is initiated, the superoxide radical is probably produced in the presence of dissolved oxygen, which subsequently dominates the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). This facile oxidation process is also effective in removing a series of BTH derivatives (BTHs) that are of environmental concern, thus can be used for their source control. The results highlight the sequential Cu(II)-Cu(I)-Cu(III) transition during PDS activation and the crucial role of contaminant coordination with Cu(II) in oxidative transformation.

Further insights into the combination of permanganate and peroxymonosulfate as an advanced oxidation process for destruction of aqueous organic contaminants

Recent studies have reported a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) by combining permanganate (KMnO₄) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for destruction of organic contaminants (i.e., acid orange 7, trichloroethylene, and benzene), where hydroxyl (^•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-) are proposed to be generated from PMS activation by amorphous manganese dioxide (MnO₂) formed in situ from KMnO₄ reduction. In this work, appreciable degradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid (p-CBA) was confirmed in KMnO₄/PMS system, while KMnO₄ or PMS alone showed inert reactivity toward p-CBA. Moreover, it was found that pre-synthesized amorphous MnO₂ showed invalid PMS activation for p-CBA degradation, and pre-addition of inorganic or organic reducing agents to promote the formation of amorphous MnO₂ showed negligible influence on p-CBA degradation as well. In these regards, a tentative mechanism for PMS activation by KMnO₄ rather than its product MnO₂ was proposed, involving the substitution of oxo atoms of KMnO₄ by peroxo groups, subsequent reductive generation of peroxomanganese (VI) complexes, and intramolecular disproportionation of these complexes to generate radicals. Efficient degradation of p-CBA was achieved at acid or basic conditions with a maximum rate occurring at pH 3. The coexisting chloride anions showed suppressive effect on p-CBA degradation for scavenging SO₄^•- and ^•OH, while metal ions accelerated the degradation of p-CBA, possibly due to the cation bridging function between negatively-charged MnO₄^- and HSO₅^-. Hydroxylated intermediates of p-CBA were identified in KMnO₄/PMS system. This work improved the fundamental understanding of a new class of AOPs by combining KMnO₄ and PMS for environmental decontamination.

Synergistic effect of aqueous removal of fluoroquinolones by a combined use of peroxymonosulfate and ferrate(VI)

This paper examines for the first time the combined use of ferrate(VI) (Fe^VIO₄^2-, Fe(VI)) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidize four fluoroquinolones (FQs) (flumequine (FLU), enrofloxacin (ENR), marbofloxacin (MAR), and ofloxacin (OFL)) at pH 7.0 and 25.0 °C. The results demonstrate that a combination of PMS and Fe(VI) synergistically enhance removal of FQs compared to the removal seen with either PMS or Fe(VI) alone. The oxidized products (OPs) of the reaction of FLU with the PMS-Fe(VI) system, identified by liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) techniques, showed transformation products resulted from hydroxylation, ring cleavage, and de-fluorination processes. Thus, the combination of PMS and Fe(VI) can be developed as an innovative oxidative technology to remove contaminants from water.
