One-step synthesis of highly efficient TiO2-CdS-Ag nanocomposite for remove organic pollution

One-dimensional recoverable ZnFe2O4/C/MnO2/BiOI magnetic composite with enhanced photocatalytic performance for organic dyes degradation

Excessive discharge of toxic dyes is detrimental to ecological system and human health. Therefore, an effective photocatalyst must be designed and developed to degrade dyes from wastewater. Herein, a novel one-dimensional (1D) flower-like recoverable ZnFe₂O₄/C/MnO₂/BiOI magnetic composite photocatalyst was synthesized via electrospinning technique combined with hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activities of composite photocatalyst were evaluated by degrading methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated light irradiation. The efficiency of ZnFe₂O₄/C/MnO₂/BiOI photocatalyst in visible light for 150 min reached 91% (MO) and 120 min reached 94% (RhB). Moreover, the degradation rate of MO still remained 78% after five cycles. The design of 1D magnetic flower-like composite provided a new strategy for preparing photocatalysts possessing excellent photocatalytic efficiency and cyclic stability.

Facile decoration of CdS nanoparticles on TiO2: robust photocatalytic activity under LED illumination

A facile approach is presented to obtain visible-light-active TiO2/CdS nanocomposites with visible-light photocatalytic activity. Ordered nanospheres of TiO2 (with anatase as the main crystalline phase) were synthesized using evaporation-induced self-assembly (EIS) with P123 block polymer without any hazardous additives. Then, a rapid microwave (MW) protocol was used to obtain visible-light-absorbing nanocomposites between TiO2 and CdS in just 10 s. Based on Rietveld refinements of X-ray diffractrograms and elemental analysis it was found that nanoparticles of CdS are mainly decorated between the nanospheres of TiO2, which can simultaneously improve light absorption and suppress the unwanted photo-corrosion effects. The prepared nanocomposites were put to test for the removal of malachite green as a model pollutant from aqueous media under irradiation. The results revealed, that excessive loading results in unwanted surface covering and less than ideal activity, but for the sample with optimized loading, about 86 and 77% of the pollutant was degraded after 100 min of illumination at room temperature under the xenon short-arc and LED illumination, respectively.

New insight into the selective photocatalytic oxidation of RhB through a strategy of modulating radical generation

Rhodamine B (RhB) has often been used as a model pollutant, but its photocatalytic mechanism is still controversial. Herein, Ag NPs were sandwiched between CdS QDs and amorphous-TiO2 (a-TiO2) with the intent to build a CdS/Ag/a-TiO2 catalyst with highly selective oxidation activity. When rhodamine B (RhB) was used as the model organic compound, the CdS/Ag/a-TiO2 composite can not only modulate radical generation but also improve the conversion ratio of RhB to rhodamine 110 (Rh-110) to as high as 82% at 80 min during the visible-light irradiation. A series of the radical scavenging experiments revealed that CdS/Ag/a-TiO2 composites could modulate the effects of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anion radicals (·O2 -) at different reaction stages so that the overoxidation of RhB and Rh-110 were repressed. Therefore, the transient state protection mechanism of selective oxidation of RhB was proposed to explain the reaction selectivity for Rh-110. Although the effects of both ·O2 - and ·OH are important during the photocatalytic selective oxidation of RhB, it is shown that the selective oxidation of RhB would be performed when the effect of ·O2 - is bigger than the ·OH, if not, RhB would be oxidized unselectively. Meanwhile, this may provide a new strategy for modulating radical generation in the photocatalysis of water phases.
