Abstract
A novel and efficient method, namely Solid-state fermentation combined with ionic liquid pretreatment and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (SSFIPU), was successfully established for the extraction of anthocyanins (ACs) from Schisandra chinensis residue samples. Additionally, an enzymatic combined with ionic liquid pretreatment and ultrasonic-assisted extraction technique (EIPU) was effectively developed to extract Schisandrin A (SDA) and Schizandrin B (SDB) from the residue after AC extraction. A comprehensive examination was conducted on ten crucial parameters of SSFIPU and eight essential parameters of EIPU. The Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the influencing factors and precisely predict the optimal extraction conditions. The optimized conditions were as follows: For SSFIPU, with 4 mol/L [BMIM]BF4, 7 % carbon, 5 % nitrogen, a material-reagent ratio of 1:3 g/mL, a bacterial solution concentration of 1 × 106 cfu/mL, a pH of 4, a fermentation time of 4 days, an ultrasonic power of 350 W, and an ultrasonic time of 30 min, an AC extraction yield of 1.173 mg/g was achieved, which was remarkably 23.46 times higher than that of ethanol reflux extraction (ERE). For EIPU, under the conditions of 4.2 mol/L [BMIM]BF4, a cellulase content of 20 %, an enzyme hydrolysis time of 2.5 h, a material-reagent ratio of 1:13 g/mL, a pH of 5, an ultrasonic power of 450 W, and an ultrasonication time of 30 min, an SDA extraction yield of 0.306 mg/g was obtained, which was 8.5 times greater than that of ERE, and an SDB extraction yield of 0.260 mg/g was achieved, which was 6.8 times higher than that of ERE. During the experiment, [BMIM]BF4 was successfully recovered with a recovery rate of 91.21 %. Consequently, the proposed environmentally friendly SSFIPU and EIPU methods have laid a solid foundation for the recovery of active ingredients from plant residues.

Abstract
In this study, enzyme-deep eutectic solvent-assisted ultrasonic extraction technique (EnDUE) was developed for the efficient dissolution of flavonoids from Artemisiae Argyi Folium. The extraction results of Artemisiae Argyi Folium flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin, and isorhamnetin) were used as indicators to investigate the influencing factors through single factor experiment, Placket-burman design, and Box-behnken design, so as to obtain satisfactory yields. After systematic optimization, the optimal conditions for extraction of the target flavonoids were: Choline chloride/1,4-butanediol with a water content of 25%, cellulase+pectinase with a concentration of 1.6%, solid-liquid ratio of 1/32 g/mL, pH of 4.2, ultrasonic frequency of 80 kHz, ultrasonic power of 160 W, ultrasonic temperature of 40 °C, and ultrasonic time of 25 min, respectively, which derived a total yield of 8.06 ± 0.29 mg/g. Compared with the reference techniques, the proposed EnDUE technique showed significant advantages in the yield and extraction efficiency of flavonoids. In addition, after preliminary purification, the Artemisiae Argyi Folium flavonoids showed good antioxidant activity. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) can degrade the cell wall components and increase the action site of enzyme, and enzyme can promote the penetration of DES into the cell wall matrix, which is mutually beneficial to the dissolution of intracellular components. Therefore, the extraction technique proposed in this work (EnDUE) greatly promotes the dissolution of flavonoids from Artemisiae Argyi Folium, and provides theoretical support for the further application of plant flavonoids.

Abstract
In order to solve problems in the treatment and disposal of huge production of artificial wetland plants and heavy metal pollution, two constructed wetland plants of reed and gladiolus were selected as raw materials to prepare biochar for adsorbing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The experimental results showed that reed biochar prepared at 600℃ and activated by KOH with an impregnation ratio of 1:3 (KRAC-3) exhibited relatively high adsorption ability towards Cu2+. The optimal results analyzed by Design-Expert software showed that the maximum adsorption rate of KRAC-3 towards Cu2+ was obtained under the optimal conditions of adsorbent dosage of 1.2 g/L, pH of 4.96, and reaction time of 137.43 min. The adsorption of Cu2+ followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of KRAC-3 calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 148.08 mg/g. Microscopic tests with the help of SEM, EDS, and XRD revealed that physical adsorption, ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption, surface complexation, and precipitation were the main adsorption mechanism of Cu2+ loading onto KRAC-3. This study will provide a theoretical basis for the application of biochar prepared from constructed wetland plants and the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater.

Abstract
The safety of ethanol in operations and its effects on human health are gradually being questioned. Under this premise, we attempted to use the natural surfactant tea saponin, which originates from the processing residues of camellia oil, as the additive of the extraction solvent and to extract eleutheroside B and eleutheroside E in the roots and rhizomes of E. senticosus by ultrasonic mediation. After a single-factor experiment, extraction kinetics at different powers and reaction temperatures, and Box-Behnken design optimization, the optimal conditions obtained were 0.3% tea saponin solution as the extraction solvent, 20 mL/g liquid-solid ratio, 250 W ultrasonic irradiation power (43.4 mW/g ultrasonic power density) and 40 min ultrasonic irradiation time. Under optimal conditions, satisfactory yields of eleutheroside B (1.06 ± 0.04 mg/g) and eleutheroside E (2.65 ± 0.12 mg/g) were obtained with semi pilot scale ultrasonic extraction equipment. The experiments showed that compared with the traditional thermal extraction process, the extraction time is significantly reduced at lower operating temperatures.

Abstract
In this paper, an efficient approach to extract total flavonoids (TFs) from Selaginella involvens (Sw.) Spring using homogenate-ultrasound-assisted ionic liquid (IL) extraction (HUA-ILE) was first developed. The results indicated that EPyBF4 was selected as the suitable extractant. According to the single factor experiment and response surface methodology, the IL concentration of 0.10 mol/L, the extraction time of 160 s, the liquid/solid ratio of 13:1 mL/g, and the extraction power of 300 W were concluded as the best conditions. A yield of 8.48 ± 0.27 mg/g TF content was obtained. Compared with HUA ethanol extraction, ultrasound-assisted IL extraction, and percolation extraction, the TF content obtained by the HUA-ILE method could be increased by 2 to 4 times, and the extraction time could be reduced by 100 times. Furthermore, 16 compounds of the TF extract were finally identified through ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry, among which 11 compounds were first discovered in S. involven. The contents of six biflavonoids in S. involven were determined simultaneously adopting high-performance liquid chromatography, including amentoflavone, hinokiflavone, bilobetin, ginkgetin, isoginkgetin, and heveaflavone. The TF extract in S. involven was proved to have potent antioxidant activity through the four antioxidant experiments. In conclusion, HUA-ILE was applied for the first time to exploit a green, efficient, and novel approach to extract TFs, and the research also provided promising prospects for applications of S. involven.

Abstract
As an important natural product, the sufficient separation of plant essential oil (EO) is helpful to improve its utilization value. In this work, deep eutectic solvent-homogenate based microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (DES-HMAHD) was developed and applied to isolate EO from the fruits of Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers. Different types of DES were investigated in terms of the EO kinetics and composition, among which oxalic acid/choline chloride (OA/ChCl) had obvious advantages. Following, molar ratio of OA and ChCl (1:1), water content (50%), liquid-solid ratio (12.5:1 mL/g), homogenate time (2 min), and microwave power (700 W) were found to be the optimum conditions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis showed that the EO isolated from DES-HMAHD contained a large proportion of m-cymene and trans-linalool oxide, which were quite different from the conventionally reported L. cubeba EO. In addition, the proposed DES-HMAHD resulted in higher separation efficiency and economic value, as well as lower environmental impact, as compared with other techniques. Afterwards, the EO isolated by different methods was evaluated from the perspective of biological activity. The EO obtained by DES-HMAHD showed higher antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS) but lower antifungal activity, which was related to its chemical composition. In general, DES-HMAHD produced a kind of L. cubeba EO with different components, which provided a scientific foundation for the sufficient isolation of plant EO and its application in the natural products.

Abstract
In this study, a simple to produce, low-cost and environment-friendly sludge based adsorbent, prepared from municipal dewatered sludge and modified by calcium oxide (CaO), is described. The enhancement effect of CaO modification on the adsorption capacity and mechanical strength of sludge based adsorbents (CaO-SA), and the modification mechanism of CaO on activated sludge are discussed. Also, the Cd(II) adsorption conditions are optimized using surface optimization experiment. The results indicated that CaO had a good effect on improving the adsorption capacity and mechanical strength of the sludge-based adsorbent. The CaO-SA adsorbent showed best performance with respect to the mechanical strength and Cd(II) adsorption capacity when prepared under 5% CaO dosage and 60 °C drying temperature. CaO modification can increase the specific surface area and calcium ion content of the sludge-based adsorbent and remove the proton of the carboxylic acid in the sludge. The Box-Behnken experimental design results revealed that the importance of operating conditions for CaO-SA adsorption of Cd(II) can be arranged in the order of adsorption time > dosage> pH> temperature. The results also indicated that the interactions between adsorption time and CaO-SA dosage, adsorption time and pH, adsorption time and temperature are all important factors affecting the Cd(II) adsorption. The optimal conditions (adsorption time of 90 min, CaO-SA dosage of 1 g/L, pH of 5 and adsorption temperature of 40 °C) for CaO-SA to adsorb Cd(II) were obtained by surface optimization, at which the Cd(II) adsorption rate could reach a value of 99.74%.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs), known as environmentally benign “green” solvents, were developed as an optimal solvent for the green extraction and separation field. In this paper, an ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (IL-UAE) of flavonoids (FVs) from bamboo leaves of Phyllostachys heterocycla was developed for the first time. First, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Bmim] Br), with the best extraction efficiency, was selected from fifteen ionic liquids with diverse structure, like carbon chains or anions. Then, the influencing parameters of ionic liquid (IL) concentration, liquid-solid ratio, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic power, were investigated by single factor tests, and further optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). In the optimization experiment, the best conditions were 1.5 mol/L [BMIM]Br aqueous solution, liquid-solid ratio 41 mL/g, ultrasonic time 90 min, and ultrasonic power 300 W. Furthermore, the microstructures of bamboo leaves and the recovery of FVs and [BMIM]Br were also studied. Therefore, this simple, green and effective IL-UAE method has potentiality for the extraction of FVs from bamboo leaves for the large-scale operations.

Abstract
The erratic pressure intensities and cavitation exhibited in an ultrasonic bath pose various during practical application. To achieve the most efficient experimental design, this manuscript aims to discover violently sites that are subject to the effect of slight changes in position on cavitation and ultrasound intensity distributed in the ultrasonic bath. In addition, optimization several often over-looked ultrasound parameters and experimental conditions, are intended to place the reaction vessel properly and operate under suitable experimental conditions to obtain the maximum yield of target analyte. In this study, an investigation of the various ultrasound intensities and cavitation in ultrasonic bath space were conducted with the help of the orientin yield using ultrasound-assisted extraction. Conventional parameters such as the volume fraction of ethanol, liquid-solid ratio, ultrasound irradiation power, time and frequency, and reaction temperature were investigated, all of which affect the extractive yield factors. Also several often over-looked parameters such as the extraction vessel position in the ultrasonic bath base, the distance between the bottom of the extraction vessel and the ultrasonic bath base, the diameter, the shape and the texture of the extraction vessel, height of the liquid medium and the ultrasound propagating medium salt concentration in the ultrasonic bath were tested exhaustively in this study. These results can therefore serve as a guide to optimize the usage of the ultrasonic bath for future applications.

Chen F, Jia J, Zhang Q, Gu H, Yang L. A modified approach for isolation of essential oil from fruit of Amorpha fruticosa Linn using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation concatenated liquid-liquid extraction. J Chromatogr A 2017; 1524:254-265. Abstract
In this work, a modified technique was developed to separate essential oil from the fruit of Amorpha fruticosa using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation concatenated liquid-liquid extraction (MHD-LLE). The new apparatus consists of two series-wound separation columns for separating essential oil, one is the conventional oil-water separation column, and the other is the extraction column of components from hydrosol using an organic solvent. Therefore, the apparatus can simultaneously collect the essential oil separated on the top of hydrosol and the components extracted from hydrosol using an organic solvent. Based on the yield of essential oil in the first and second separation columns, the effects of parameters were investigated by single factor experiments and Box-Behnken design. Under the optimum conditions (2mL ethyl ether as the extraction solvent in the second separation column, 12mL/g liquid-solid ratio, 4.0min homogenate time, 35min microwave irradiation time and 540W microwave irradiation power), satisfactory yields for the essential oil in the first separation column (10.31±0.33g/kg) and second separation column (0.82±0.03g/kg) were obtained. Compared with traditional methods, the developed method gave a higher yield of essential oil in a shorter time. In addition, GC-MS analysis of the essential oil indicated significant differences of the relative contents of individual volatile components in the essential oils obtained in the two separation columns. Therefore, the MHD-LLE technique developed here is a good alternative for the isolation of essential oil from A. fruticosa fruit as well as other herbs.

Abstract
(1) Background: Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered "green" solvents and have been widely used in the extraction and separation field in recent years; (2) Methods: In this study, some common ILs and functionalized magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) were used as adjuvants for the solvent extraction of paclitaxel from Taxus x media (T. x media) using methanol solution. The extraction conditions of methanol concentration, IL type and amount, solid-liquid ratio, extraction temperature, and ultrasonic irradiation time were investigated in single factor experiments. Then, three factors of IL amount, solid-liquid ratio, and ultrasonic irradiation time were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM); (3) Results: The MIL [C₄MIM]FeCl₃Br was screened as the optimal adjuvant. Under the optimization conditions of 1.2% IL amount, 1:10.5 solid-liquid ratio, and 30 min ultrasonic irradiation time, the extraction yield reached 0.224 mg/g; and (4) Conclusions: Compared with the conventional solvent extraction, this ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE) using methanol and MIL as adjuvants can significantly improve the extraction yield, reduce the use of methanol, and shorten the extraction time, which has the potentiality of being used in the extraction of some other important bioactive compounds from natural plant resources.

Abstract
Ultrasonic circulating extraction (UCE) approach was developed for effective extraction of orientin and vitexin from the flowers of Trollius chinensis successfully. In this study, some parameters potentially influencing the yields of orientin and vitexin were systematically investigated and optimized by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design, and the optimum operational conditions obtained were 60% ethanol volume fraction, 1000r/min stirring speed, 30°C temperature, 28min ultrasonic irradiation time, 10mL/g liquid-solid ratio and 738W ultrasonic irradiation power. Satisfactory yields of orientin (6.05±0.19mg/g) and vitexin (0.96±0.03mg/g) were obtained in a relatively shorter extraction time under the derived optimum conditions, compared to other ultrasonic extraction methods and heat extraction methods. The mechanism of UCE procedure was discussed in detail, to illustrate the advantage of UCE in the extraction process. In addition, no degradation of orientin and vitexin and high reproducibility of the developed UCE method were observed under the optimum conditions. The proposed UCE technique with high-capacity and circulation function is a rapid and efficient sample extraction technique, and performs promising in large-scale sample preparation.
