Mechanistic aspects of electro-catalytic reduction of Reactive Black 5 dye in a divided cell in the presence of silver nano-particles

Co-metabolic biodegradation of structurally discrepant dyestuffs by Klebsiella sp. KL-1: A molecular mechanism with regards to the differential responsiveness

In this study, an attempt was made to decipher the underlying differential response mechanism of Klebsiella sp. KL-1 induced by exposure to disparate categories of dyestuffs in xylose (Xyl) co-metabolic system. Here, representative reactive black 5 (RB5), remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR) and malachite green (MG) belonging to the azo, anthraquinone and triphenylmethane categories were employed as three model dyestuffs. Klebsiella sp. KL-1 enabled nearly 98%, 80% or 97% removal of contaminants in assays Xyl + RB5, Xyl + RBBR or Xyl + MG after 48 h, which was respectively 16%, 11% or 22% higher than those in the assays devoid of xylose. LC-QTOF-MS revealed an increased formation of smaller molecular weight intermediates in assay Xyl + RB5, whereas more metabolic pathways were deduced in assay Xyl + RBBR. Metaproteomics analysis displayed remarkable proteome alteration with regards to the structural difference effect of dyestuffs by Klebsiella sp. KL-1. Significant (p-value<0.05) activation of pivotal candidate NADH-quinone oxidoreductase occurred after 48 h of disparate dyestuff exposure but with varying abundance. Dominant FMN-dependent NADH-azoreductase, Cytochrome d terminal oxidase or Thiol peroxidase were likewise deemed to be responsible for the catalytic cleavage of RB5, RBBR or MG, respectively. Further, the differential response mechanism towards the structurally discrepant dyestuffs was put forward. Elevated reducing force associated with the corresponding functional proteins/enzymes was transferred to the exterior of the cell to differentially decompose the target contaminants. Overall, this study was dedicated to provide in-depth insights into the molecular response mechanism of co-metabolic degradation of refractory and structurally discrepant dyestuffs by an indigenous isolated Klebsiella strain.

Amplified electrochemical sensor employing Ag NPs functionalized graphene paper electrode for high sensitive analysis of Sudan I

In this study, a high-performance flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper electrode composed of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for the detection of Sudan I was fabricated. Ag NPs were doped with rGO nanoheets by self-assemble and assembled into a paper electrode with layer-by-layer structure via vacuum filtration. Thanks to the highly efficient electrocatalysis of Ag NPs towards reduction of azo bond, the as-prepared hybrid paper can be used alone as a flexible sensor for the detection of Sudan I in chili powder, with the high sensitivity (22.93 μA μmol/L) and the low detection limit (41.3 nmol/L). The sensor also expressed good selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability and recovery between 96.1% and 101.8% (RSD < 6%). With the advantages of low-cost and scalable production capacity, such Ag NPs/rGO functional papers can be used as flexible disposable sensors for electrochemical detection of Sudan I.

Recent advances in Ponceau dyes monitoring as food colorant substances by electrochemical sensors and developed procedures for their removal from real samples

Ponceau dyes are one of the food coloring materials that are added to various pharmaceutical, health and food products and give them an appearance. These dyes contain contaminants such as Benzidine, 4-Aminobiphenyl, and 4-Aminoazobenzene that are safe in small amounts, but they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) for human consumption. This study comprehensively was reviewed the properties, applications, chemistry, and toxicity of Ponceau dyes as food colorant substances. Electroanalysis of Ponceau dyes was discussed in detail, and the various electrochemical sensors used to detect and monitor these dyes as food colorant were examined. The applied methods of removing and degradation of these dyes in municipal and industrial wastes were also discussed. Conclusions and future perspectives to motivate future research were also explored.

Homogeneous photocatalytic degradation of azo dye Reactive Black 5 using Fe(III) ions under visible light

Efficient and cost-effective method to destroy complex dyes is warranted to combat increasing water pollution. In the present study, homogeneous photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye was studied using ferric ions (Fe(III)) under visible light (VL) irradiation and sunlight (SL). In the presence of 5 mM ferric ions and at pH 2.6, more than 80% of initial 20 mg/L RB5 was decolourized in 60 min under artificial VL. Decolourization followed pseudo first-order kinetics with the reaction rate constant 0.0356 min^-1. 79% of initial COD was removed at the end of 60 min, suggesting mineralization of RB5 as the main cause of decolourization. Using similar experimental conditions under SL, more than 90% RB5 was decolourized in 15 min with an almost 10-fold increase in the reaction rate constant (0.34 min^-1). Rate and extent of RB5 destruction significantly decreased in the presence of •OH scavenger indicating photoreduction of Fe-hydroxo species and generation of •OH as the main mechanism of RB5 degradation. RB5 removal increased from ca. 30% to 84% with the increase in Fe(III) concentration from 0.5 to 5 mM. The corresponding 1st-order rate constants increased linearly from 0.006 to 0.036 min^-1. RB5 degradation decreased linearly (R² = 0.98) from 91.7% to 63.3% with the increase in initial RB5 concentration from 10 to 40 mg/L. Fe(III) induced homogenous PCO appears to be a reliable and low-cost method of advanced oxidation without the need for costly reagent such as H₂O₂.

Highly efficient solar photocatalytic degradation of a textile dye by TiO2/graphene quantum dots nanocomposite

Herein, two sunlight responsive photocatalysts including TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) and TiO₂/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) nanocomposite for degrading a textile dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5), were prepared. The results showed that 100% of 50 ppm RB5 could be degraded by TiO₂ NPs and TiO₂/GQDs within 60 and 30 min sunlight irradiation, respectively. Hence, much better photocatalytic activity in degradation of RB5 was achieved by TiO₂/GQDs under sunlight irradiation compared with pure TiO₂ NPs due to its lower band gap (2.13 eV) and electron/hole recombination rate. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RB5 by TiO₂ NPs was elucidated by adding some scavengers to the solution. The main reactive species contributing to RB5 degradation were surface hydroxyl radicals. The first-order solar degradation rate constant of RB5 for TiO₂/GQDs is greater than that of TiO₂ NPs under sunlight illumination.

Synthesis and application of gas diffusion cathodes in an advanced type of undivided electrochemical cell

This paper reports the oxidation of Remazol black B dye by employing iron ions catalyst based gas diffusion cathodes, (GDCs). A GDC was synthesized by using a layer of carbon black and iron ions catalyst for oxygen reduction to hydrogen peroxide. The results demonstrated around 97% decolorization of Remazol black-B dye for 50 min by iron ions catalyst based GDC. The degradation study was performed under electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide at a constant voltage of - 0.6 V vs Hg/HgSO4 in which the rate of degradation was correlated with hydrogen peroxide production. Overall, the GDC's found to be effective method to degrade the dyes via electro-Fenton.

Sugar sources as Co-substrates promoting the degradation of refractory dye: A comparative study

Four sugar sources were used as co-substrates to promote the degradation of a selected refractory dye reactive black 5 (RB5) by the natural bacterial flora DDMZ1. The boosting performance of the four sugar sources on RB5 decolorization ranked as: fructose > sucrose > glucose > glucose + fructose. Kinetic results of these four co-metabolism systems agreed well with a first-order kinetic model. Four sugar sources stimulated the extracellular azoreductase secretion causing enhanced enzyme activity. An increased formation of low molecular weight intermediates was caused by the addition of sugar sources. The toxicity of RB5 degradation products was significantly reduced in the presence of sugar sources. The bacterial community structure differed remarkably as a result of sugar sources addition. For a fructose addition, a considerably enriched population of the functional species Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia and Klebsiella was noted. The results enlarge our knowledge of the microkinetic and microbiological mechanisms of co-metabolic degradation of refractory pollutants.

One-step preparation of a novel SrCO3/g-C3N4 nano-composite and its application in selective adsorption of crystal violet

A novel kind of nanoparticle SrCO₃/g-C₃N₄ was prepared using strontium carbonate (SrCO₃) and melamine (C₃H₆N₆) as raw materials via one-step calcination. The formation of SrCO₃/g-C₃N₄ was confirmed from the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Its selective adsorption performance was evaluated towards crystal violet (CV), rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB). The results showed that the SrCO₃/g-C₃N₄ had selective adsorption ability of CV. Furthermore, adsorption measurements of CV were conducted to investigate the influences of contact time, initial concentration, initial dye solution pH value and adsorbent dosage. The maximum removal rate of CV was 98.56% when the initial concentration was 1600 mg L⁻¹. The kinetic study indicated the adsorption of CV followed the pseudo-second-second model well. The adsorption efficiency of SrCO₃/g-C₃N₄ was greater (97.46%) than that of g-C₃N₄ (31.30%) and SrCO₃ (17.30%). It could be deduced that the synergistic effect of conjugation interaction of g-C₃N₄ and the electrostatic attraction of SrCO₃ might be the main driving force for the superb adsorption of CV.
