Adsorbate mass transfer into porous adsorbents – A practical viewpoint

Mind the Gap: The Role of Mass Transfer in Shaped Nanoporous Adsorbents for Carbon Dioxide Capture

Adsorptive separations by nanoporous materials are major industrial processes. The industrial importance of solid adsorbents is only expected to grow due to the increased focus on carbon dioxide capture technology and energy-efficient separations. To evaluate the performance of an adsorbent and design a separation process, the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics must be known. However, although diffusion kinetics determine the maximum production rate in any adsorption-based separation, this aspect has received less attention due to the challenges associated with conducting diffusion measurements. These challenges are exacerbated in the study of shaped adsorbents due to the presence of porosity at different length scales. As a result, adsorbent selection typically relies mainly on adsorption properties at equilibrium, i.e., uptake capacity, selectivity and adsorption enthalpy. In this Perspective, based on an extensive literature review on mass transfer of CO2 in nanoporous adsorbents, we discuss the importance and limitations of measuring diffusion in nanoporous materials, from the powder form to the adsorption bed, considering the nature of the process, i.e., equilibrium-based or kinetic-based separations. By highlighting the lack of and discrepancies between published diffusivity data in the context of CO2 capture, we discuss future challenges and opportunities in studying mass transfer across scales in adsorption-based separations.

Modeling CO2 Adsorption in a Thin Discrete Packing

Local dynamics of CO2 adsorption in a discrete packing contained in a thin tube was assessed by 3D modeling. Thin tube packed bed adsorbers are currently used over tube structures in thermochemical energy storage systems and atmospheric revitalization of confined spaces. Driven by the interplay between key factors such as the exothermicity and the fluid flow, the advective transport was found less effective than the diffusive one on the breakthrough trends of CO2 which displayed significant concentration gradients at both inter- and intraparticle scales. The lack of angular symmetry inside the particles by the reduction in resistance to mass transfer in the area of solid particles exposed to high velocities led to greater convective transports from the bulk of the gaseous phase to the pores. The result of the modeling agreed with the experimental data obtained at the exit of the adsorber, helping reduction in reliance on the empirical dispersion models used in the one-dimensional modeling.

Performance of Pristine versus Magnetized Orange Peels Biochar Adapted to Adsorptive Removal of Daunorubicin: Eco-Structuring, Kinetics and Equilibrium Studies

Drugs and pharmaceuticals are an emergent class of aquatic contaminants. The existence of these pollutants in aquatic bodies is currently raising escalating concerns because of their negative impact on the ecosystem. This study investigated the efficacy of two sorbents derived from orange peels (OP) biochar (OPBC) for the removal of the antineoplastic drug daunorubicin (DNB) from pharmaceutical wastewater. The adsorbents included pristine (OPBC) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄)-impregnated (MAG-OPBC) biochars. Waste-derived materials offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution to wastewater bioremediation. The results showed that impregnation with Fe₃O₄ altered the crystallization degree and increased the surface area from 6.99 m²/g in OPBC to 60.76 m²/g in the case of MAG-OPBC. Placket-Burman Design (PBD) was employed to conduct batch adsorption experiments. The removal efficiency of MAG-OPBC (98.51%) was higher compared to OPBC (86.46%). DNB adsorption onto OPBC followed the D-R isotherm, compared to the Langmuir isotherm in the case of MAG-OPBC. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was 172.43 mg/g for MAG-OPBC and 83.75 mg/g for OPBC. The adsorption kinetics for both sorbents fitted well with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. The results indicate that MAG-OPBC is a promising adsorbent for treating pharmaceutical wastewater.

Adsorption of SARS-CoV-2 onto granular activated carbon (GAC) in wastewater: Implications for improvements in passive sampling

Based on recent studies, passive sampling is a promising method for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater surveillance (WWS) applications. Passive sampling has many advantages over conventional sampling approaches. However, the potential benefits of passive sampling are also coupled with apparent limitations. We established a passive sampling technique for detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater using electronegative filters. Though, it was evident that the adsorption capacity of the filters constrained their use. This work intends to demonstrate an optimized passive sampling technique for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater using granular activated carbon (GAC). Through bench-scale batch-adsorption studies and sewershed deployments, we established the adsorption characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and two human feacal viruses (PMMoV and CrAssphage) onto GAC. A pseudo-second-order model best-described adsorption kinetics for SARS-CoV-2 in either deionized (DI) water and SARS-CoV-2, CrAssphage, and PMMoV in wastewater. In both laboratory batch-adsorption experiments and in-situ sewershed deployments, the maximum amount of SARS-CoV-2 adsorbed by GAC occurred at ~60 h in wastewater. In wastewater, the maximum adsorption of PMMoV and CrAssphage by GAC occurred at ~60 h. In contrast, the adsorption capacity was reached in DI water seeded with SARS-CoV-2 after ~35 h. The equilibrium assay modeled the maximum adsorption quantity (qmax) in wastewater with spiked SARS-CoV-2 concentrations using a Hybrid Langmuir-Freundlich equation, a qmax of 2.5 × 109 GU/g was calculated. In paired sewershed deployments, it was found that GAC adsorbs SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater more effectively than electronegative filters. Based on the anticipated viral loading in wastewater, bi-weekly sampling intervals with deployments up to ~96 h are highly feasible without reaching adsorption capacity with GAC. GAC offers improved sensitivity and reproducibility to capture SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater, promoting a scalable and convenient alternative for capturing viral pathogens in wastewater.

Development of porous material via chitosan-based Pickering medium internal phase emulsion for efficient adsorption of Rb+, Cs+ and Sr2

The radioactive Rb⁺, Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ have serious threat for the aquatic life and human health, its removal has been granted increasing concern. Hence the adsorbent with excellent adsorption performance and favourable reusability is strongly demanded. This work prepared a novel porous polymer of chitosan-g-polyacrylamide (CTS-g-PAM) by grafting the acrylamide (AM) onto the chitosan (CTS) with sufficient pore structure via an eco-friendly surfactant-free (corn oil)-in-water Pickering medium internal phase emulsion (O/W Pickering MIPE), solely stabilized by CTS. Interestingly, its pore structure could be tuned by varying the emulsion character via changing the molecular weight and concentration of CTS, as well as the pH values. Due to the abundant -COO^- and -NH₂ functional groups in the porous material of CTS-g-PAM, the high adsorption capacities of 195.43, 237.44 and 185.63 mg/g for Rb⁺, Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ could be reached within 40, 30 and 20 min, respectively. Moreover, the CTS-g-PAM had excellent regeneration ability and reusability. Herein, we provided a feasible and low-cost pathway for preparation of the porous adsorbent with tunable porous structure for adsorption and separation application.

Steam adsorption on molecular sieve 3A for sorption enhanced reaction processes

Steam adsorption enhanced reaction processes are a promising process intensification for many types of reactions, where water is formed as a byproduct. To assess the potential of these processes, adequate models are required that accurately describe water adsorption, particularly under the desired elevated temperatures and pressures. In this work, an adsorption isotherm is presented for H2O adsorption at 200–350 °C and 0.05–4.5 bar partial pressure on molecular sieve (LTA) 3A. The isotherm has been developed on the basis of experimental data obtained from a thermogravimetric analysis and integrated breakthrough curves. The experimental data at lower steam partial pressures can be described with a Generalized Statistical Thermodynamic Adsorption (GSTA) isotherm, whereas at higher steam partial pressures the experimental data can be adequately captured by capillary condensation. Based on the characteristics of the adsorbent particles, a linear driving force relation has been derived for the adsorption mass transfer rate and the apparent micropore diffusivity is determined. The isotherm and mass transport model presented here prove to be adequate for modelling and improved evaluation of steam adsorption enhanced reaction processes.

Exact equivalence at cyclic steady state between isothermal diffusion and linear driving force models for linear adsorption systems

To match the dynamics of a linear driving force model and the diffusion equation is of great practical importance in the design and optimization of adsorption separation processes. A frequency response analysis is applied to show that it is not possible to arrive at an equivalence based on a single parameter. Using this as the basis, a universal equivalence for the linear problem is constructed and closed form analytical expressions for the two parameters are derived for the sphere and slab geometries. The two parameters represent the increased effective mass transfer coefficient and a reduction in the active volume of the particle, both corresponding to the internal concentration profiles of the diffusion equation at cyclic steady state.
