Effect of Ti3+ on enhancing photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanorods/nanosheets photoelectrode

Aptamer molecular gate functionalized mesoporous SiO2@MB controlled-release system for pollutant detection using Ti(Ⅲ) self-doped TiO2 NTs as active photoanode coupled with electrostatic modulation

Atrazine (ATZ) is a widely used herbicide that can cause serious harm to organisms and ecosystems. An immobilization-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor has been herein developed for ATZ based on aptamer molecular gate functionalized mesoporous SiO2@MB controlled release system. Compared with traditional immobilization-based sensors, immobilization-free sensors (IFSs) avoid the modification of the recognition element on the electrode surface. Mesoporous SiO2 with large surface area and good biocompatibility can be used as nanocontainers to stably encapsulate the signal shuttle molecule methylene blue (MB). The bifunctional aptamer (APT) is used not only as the recognition element for ATZ but also as the signal switch to block or release MB. In the presence of ATZ, the specific recognition between ATZ and APT will cause the detachment of APT from the surface of SiO2, thus the molecular gate will open and release MB. Due to pH modulation, the positively charged MB can reach the surface of the negatively charged Ti(III) self-doped TiO2 NTs (Ti(III)-TiO2 NTs) electrode to act as an electron donor, which increases the photocurrent. The immobilization-free aptasensor has shown ultrasensitive detection of ATZ with a wide linear range from 1.0 pM to 100.0 nM and a low detection limit of 0.1 pM. In addition, the sensor has excellent selectivity, stability and anti-interference ability, and has been used in real water sample analysis successfully. This strategy has provided a new idea for the design of advanced immobilization-free PEC sensors for environmental pollutant detection.

Exquisitely designed TiO2 quantum dot/Bi2O2CO3 nano-sheet S-scheme heterojunction towards boosted photo-catalytic removal

The development of novel semiconductor photo-catalysts for the efficient degradation of antibiotics poses a considerable challenge in the context of ever-increasing environmental pollution. Herein, an S-scheme photo-catalyst consisting of TiO2 quantum dots (QDs, size ∼4-6 nm) anchored on Bi2O2CO3 nano-sheets was synthesised via a facile hydrothermal protocol. TiO2/Bi2O2CO3 (TB) nano-composite exhibits enhanced photo-catalytic removal of tetracycline, achieving ∼0.0158 min-1 photo-degradation rates using visible light, which is 3- and 53-fold greater than that of pristine TiO2 and Bi2O2CO3, respectively. The theoretical calculations substantiate that the built-in electric field in the TB nano-composite is conducive to the separation and transfer of photo-excited carriers. Notably, the generated superoxide radicals rather than hydroxyl were identified as the responsible species for tetracycline degradation. In addition, the corresponding degradation pathway and eco-toxicity analysis were also elucidated. In conclusion, this work contributes valuable insights and presents a feasible approach for the fabrication of S-scheme photo-catalysts (TiO2 QDs and bismuth-based nano-materials), thereby enabling the efficient removal of water pollutants.

Novel Sb-SnO2 Electrode with Ti3+ Self-Doped Urchin-Like Rutile TiO2 Nanoclusters as the Interlayer for the Effective Degradation of Dye Pollutants

Stable and efficient SnO₂ electrodes are very promising for effectively degrading refractory organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. In this regard, we firstly prepared Ti³⁺ self-doped urchin-like rutile TiO₂ nanoclusters (TiO_2-x NCs) on a Ti mesh substrate by hydrothermal and electroreduction to serve as an interlayer for the deposition of Sb-SnO₂ . The TiO_2-x NCs/Sb-SnO₂ anode exhibited a high oxygen evolution potential (2.63 V vs. SCE) and strong ⋅OH generation ability for the enhanced amount of absorbed oxygen species. Thus, the degradation results demonstrated its good rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), alizarin yellow R (AYR), and methyl orange (MO) removal performance, with the rate constant increased 5.0, 1.9, 1.9, and 4.7 times, respectively, compared to the control Sb-SnO₂ electrode. RhB and AYR degradation mechanisms are also proposed based on the results of high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and quenching experiments. More importantly, this unique rutile interlayer prolonged the anode lifetime sixfold, given its good lattice match with SnO₂ and the three-dimensional concave-convex structure. Consequently, this work paves a new way for designing the crystal form and structure of the interlayers to obtain efficient and stable SnO₂ electrodes for addressing dye wastewater problems.

Construction of Spindle-Shaped Ti3+ Self-Doped TiO2 Photocatalysts Using Triethanolamine-Aqueous as the Medium and Its Photoelectrochemical Properties

To enhance the utilization efficiency of visible light and reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, spindle-shaped TiO2 photocatalysts with different Ti3+ concentrations were fabricated by a simple solvothermal strategy using low-cost, environmentally friendly TiH2 and H2O2 as raw materials and triethanolamine-aqueous as the medium. The photocatalytic activities of the obtained photocatalysts were investigated in the presence of visible light. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra were applied to characterize the structure, morphologies, and chemical compositions of as-fabricated Ti3+ self-doped TiO2. The concentration of triethanolamine in the mixed solvent plays a significant role on the crystallinity, morphologies, and photocatalytic activities. The electron–hole separation efficiency was found to increase with the increase in the aspect ratio of as-fabricated Ti3+ self-doped TiO2, which was proved by transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Ti/TiO2 nanotubes sensitized PbS quantum dots as photoelectrodes applied for decomposition of anticancer drugs under simulated solar energy

One of the challenges in research into photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of pollutants is finding the appropriate photoanode material, which has a significant impact on the process efficiency. Among all others, photoelectrodes based on an ordered TiO₂ nanotube arrays are a promising material due to well-developed surface area and efficient charge separation. To increase the PEC activity of this material, the SILAR method was used to decorate Ti/TiO₂ nanotubes by PbS quantum dots (QD). The ifosfamide (IF) degradation rate constants was twice as higher for PbS-Ti/TiO₂ (0.0148 min^-1) than for Ti/TiO₂ (0.0072 min^-1). Our research showed the highest efficiency of PEC degradation of drugs using IIIPbS-Ti/TiO₂ made with 3 SILAR cycles (PbS QD size mainly 2-4 nm). The 4 and 6 of SILAR cycles resulted in the aggregation of PbS nanoparticles on the Ti/TiO₂ surface and decreased IF PEC degradation rate to 0.0043 and 0.0033 min^-1, respectively. Research on PEC mechanism has shown that the drugs are degraded mainly by the activity of photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals. In addition, the identified drug intermediates made possible to propose a degradation pathways of anticancer drugs and the ecotoxicity test show no inhibition of Lemna minor growth of treated solutions.

Recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotic residues in water

Antibiotics are widely present in the environment due to their extensive and long-term use in modern medicine. The presence and dispersal of these compounds in the environment lead to the dissemination of antibiotic residues, thereby seriously threatening human and ecosystem health. Thus, the effective management of antibiotic residues in water and the practical applications of the management methods are long-term matters of contention among academics. Particularly, photocatalysis has attracted extensive interest as it enables the treatment of antibiotic residues in an eco-friendly manner. Considerable progress has been achieved in the implementation of photocatalytic treatment of antibiotic residues in the past few years. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments on this important topic. This review primarily focuses on the application of photocatalysis as a promising solution for the efficient decomposition of antibiotic residues in water. Particular emphasis was laid on improvement and modification strategies, such as augmented light harvesting, improved charge separation, and strengthened interface interaction, all of which enable the design of powerful photocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic removal of antibiotics.
