Abstract
ZIF-67 nanoparticles were grown on ZIF-L(Zn) nanosheets by in-situ heteroepitaxial method, resulting in ZIF-67@ZIF-L(Zn) as a charming two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite for incorporation into the Pebax-1657 and improving its CO2/N2 separation performance. The fabricated nanofillers and membranes were analyzed by characterization tests (FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDAX-mapping) and gas separation experiments (effect of filler loading, filler type, feed pressure, and long-term stability). It was observed that the nanosheets were well dispersed in the matrix, and they had formed a proper interaction by creating hydrogen bonds at the interface; in addition, due to their crystalline nature, they increased the crystallinity of the MMMs. The results of the gas permeability test showed that these nanofillers, with their composite structure, had a synergistic effect on the gas solubility and screening and caused a significant improvement in the separation performance of MMMs. So that the best performance achieved with a CO2 permeability of 72.9 Barrer and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 102.9 at 10 bar for the MMM containing 2 wt% of ZIF-L(Zn)@ZIF-67, also exceeding Robeson's upper bound. Moreover, Mindex as a criterion for evaluation of the gas separation performance of MMMs in simultaneous improvement of the permeability and selectivity was proposed in this work. The Mindex values in the range of 0.5-1.5 were calculated for the MMM containing 2 wt% of ZIF-L(Zn)@ZIF-67 nanosheet which indicating a good quality for the gas separation performance. Furthermore, at equal filler loading (2 wt%), this membrane outperformed all MMMs containing other nanofillers (ZIF-67, ZIF-8, ZIF-L(Co), or ZIF-L(Zn)).

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is now 50% higher than in the preindustrial period and efforts to reduce CO2 emission through carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are blooming. Membranes are one of the attractive alternatives for such application. In this study, a rubbery polymer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane is incorporated with magnesium oxide (MgO) with a hierarchically two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet shape for CO2 separation. The average thickness of the synthesized MgO nanosheet in this study is 35.3 ± 1.5 nm. Based on the pure gas separation performance, the optimal loading obtained is at 1 wt.% where there is no observable significant agglomeration. CO2 permeability was reduced from 2382 Barrer to 1929 Barrer while CO2/N2 selectivity increased from only 11.4 to 12.7, and CO2/CH4 remained relatively constant when the MMM was operated at 2 bar and 25 °C. Sedimentation of the filler was observed when the loading was further increased to 5 wt.%, forming interfacial defects on the bottom side of the membrane and causing increased CO2 gas permeability from 1929 Barrer to 2104 Barrer as compared to filler loading at 1 wt.%, whereas the CO2/N2 ideal selectivity increased from 12.1 to 15.0. Additionally, this study shows that there was no significant impact of pressure on separation performance. There was a linear decline of CO2 permeability with increasing upstream pressure while there were no changes to the CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity.

Abstract
Current health and environmental concerns about the abundance and drawbacks of municipal wastewater as well as industrial effluent have prompted the development of novel and innovative treatment processes. A global shortage of clean water poses significant challenges to the survival of all life forms. For the removal of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable harmful wastes/pollutants from water, sophisticated wastewater treatment technologies are required. Polymer membrane technology is critical to overcoming this major challenge. Polymer matrix-based nanocomposite membranes are among the most popular in polymer membrane technology in terms of convenience. These membranes and their major components are environmentally friendly, energy efficient, cost effective, operationally versatile, and feasible. This review provides an overview of the drawbacks as well as promising developments in polymer membrane and nanocomposite membranes for environmental remediation, with a focus on wastewater treatment. Additionally, the advantages of nanocomposite membranes such as stability, antimicrobial properties, and adsorption processes have been discussed. The goal of this review was to summarize the remediation of harmful pollutants from water and wastewater/effluent using polymer matrix-based nanocomposite membrane technology, and to highlight its shortcomings and future prospects.

Abstract
Developing blend membrane material is one feasible and effective route for improving the gas separation efficiency and commercial attractiveness of membrane technologies. Here, free-standing membranes were prepared by casting method using Pebax-1074 as continuous polymer matrix and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as dispersive organic fillers. The morphology, surface functional groups, microstructure and thermal stability of the membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The effects of preparation variables including average molecular weight and dosage of PEG on the microstructure, morphology and properties of the blend membranes were investigated. In addition, the effects of operation conditions including permeation temperature and permeation pressure on the gas separation performance of the blend membranes were also examined. The results showed that the addition of PEG can obviously modify the structure-properties and significantly improve the separation performance of resultant membranes. Under the conditions of 30°C and 0.25 MPa, the optimal CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity respectively reached to 124.3Barrer and 115.8 for the blend membranes made by PEG600 with a content of 20% in Pebax-1074 matrix. In brief, the as-prepared blend membranes are proved to be promising for CO2/N2 separation application.

Abstract
Composites of polymer and graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) combine easy processing onto porous 3D membrane geometries due to the polymer and cellular differentiation stimuli due to GBNs fillers. Aiming to step forward to the clinical application of polymer/GBNs composites, this study performs a systematic and detailed comparative analysis of the influence of the properties of four different GBNs: (i) graphene oxide obtained from graphite chemically processes (GO); (ii) reduced graphene oxide (rGO); (iii) multilayered graphene produced by mechanical exfoliation method (Gmec); and (iv) low-oxidized graphene via anodic exfoliation (Ganodic); dispersed in polycaprolactone (PCL) porous membranes to induce astrocytic differentiation. PCL/GBN flat membranes were fabricated by phase inversion technique and broadly characterized in morphology and topography, chemical structure, hydrophilicity, protein adsorption, and electrical properties. Cellular assays with rat C6 glioma cells, as model for cell-specific astrocytes, were performed. Remarkably, low GBN loading (0.67 wt%) caused an important difference in the response of the C6 differentiation among PCL/GBN membranes. PCL/rGO and PCL/GO membranes presented the highest biomolecule markers for astrocyte differentiation. Our results pointed to the chemical structural defects in rGO and GO nanomaterials and the protein adsorption mechanisms as the most plausible cause conferring distinctive properties to PCL/GBN membranes for the promotion of astrocytic differentiation. Overall, our systematic comparative study provides generalizable conclusions and new evidences to discern the role of GBNs features for future research on 3D PCL/graphene composite hollow fiber membranes for in vitro neural models.

Abstract
An inspiring challenge for membrane scientists is to exceed the current materials' performance while keeping the intrinsic processability of the polymers. Nanocomposites, as mixed-matrix membranes, represent a practicable response to this strongly felt need, since they combine the superior properties of inorganic fillers with the easy handling of the polymers. In the global strategy of containing the greenhouse effect by pursuing a model of sustainable growth, separations involving CO2 are some of the most pressing topics due to their implications in flue gas emission and natural gas upgrading. For this purpose, Pebax copolymers are being actively studied by virtue of a macromolecular structure that comprises specific groups that are capable of interacting with CO2, facilitating its transport with respect to other gas species. Interestingly, these copolymers show a high versatility in the incorporation of nanofillers, as proved by the large number of papers describing nanocomposite membranes based on Pebax for the separation of CO2. Since the field is advancing fast, this review will focus on the most recent progress (from the last 5 years), in order to provide the most up-to-date overview in this area. The most recent approaches for developing Pebax-based mixed-matrix membranes will be discussed, evidencing the most promising filler materials and analyzing the key-factors and the main aspects that are relevant in terms of achieving the best effectiveness of these multifaceted membranes for the development of innovative devices.

Abstract
Poly(ether-block-amide)/g-PTAP mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were developed by incorporating different wt.% (1-10%) of a novel 2D g-PTAP nanofiller and its effects on membrane structure and gas permeability were studied. The novel 2D material g-PTAP was synthesized and characterized by various analytical techniques including field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman spectroscopy. The fabricated MMMs were investigated to study the interaction and compatibility between Pebax and g-PTAP. The MMMs showed an effective integration of g-PTAP nanofiller into the Pebax matrix without affecting its thermal stability. Gas permeation experiments with MMMs showed improved CO2 permeability and selectivity (CO2 /N2 ) upon incorporation of g-PTAP in the Pebax polymer matrix. The maximum CO2 permeability enhancement from 82.3 to 154.6 Barrer with highest CO2 /N2 selectivity from 49.5 to 83.5 were found with 2.5 wt.% of nanofiller compared to neat Pebax membranes.

Abstract
In this work, the behavior of new GO-based mixed matrix membranes was tested in view of their use as CO2-selective membrane in post combustion carbon capture applications. In particular, the new materials were obtained by mixing of Pebax® 2533 copolymer with different types of graphene oxide (GO). Pebax® 2533 has indeed lower selectivity, but higher permeability than Pebax® 1657, which is more commonly used for membranes, and it could therefore benefit from the addition of GO, which is endowed with very high selectivity of CO2 with respect to nitrogen. The mixed matrix membranes were obtained by adding different amounts of GO, from 0.02 to 1% by weight, to the commercial block copolymers. Porous graphene oxide (PGO) and GO functionalized with polyetheramine (PEAGO) were also considered in composites produced with similar procedure, with a loading of 0.02%wt. The obtained films were then characterized by using SEM, DSC, XPS analysis and permeability experiments. In particular, permeation tests with pure CO2 and N2 at 35°C and 1 bar of upstream pressure were conducted for the different materials to evaluate their separation performance. It has been discovered that adding these GO-based nanofillers to Pebax® 2533 matrix does not improve the ideal selectivity of the material, but it allows to increase CO2 permeability when a low filler content, not higher than 0.02 wt%, is considered. Among the different types of GO, then, porous GO seems the most promising as it shows CO2 permeability in the order of 400 barrer (with an increase of about 10% with respect to the unloaded block copolymer), obtained without reducing the CO2/N2 selectivity of the materials, which remained in the order of 25.

Abstract
CO2 separation is an important process for a wide spectrum of industries including petrochemical, refinery and coal-fired power plant industries. The membrane-based process is a promising operation for CO2 separation owing to its fundamental engineering and economic benefits over the conventionally used separation processes. Asymmetric polymer–inorganic nanocomposite membranes are endowed with interesting properties for gas separation processes. The presence of nanosized inorganic nanofiller has offered unprecedented opportunities to address the issues of conventionally used polymeric membranes. Surface modification of nanofillers has become an important strategy to address the shortcomings of nanocomposite membranes in terms of nanofiller agglomeration and poor dispersion and polymer–nanofiller incompatibility. In the context of CO2 gas separation, surface modification of nanofiller is also accomplished to render additional CO2 sorption capacity and facilitated transport properties. This article focuses on the current strategies employed for the surface modification of nanofillers used in the development of CO2 separation nanocomposite membranes. A review based on the recent progresses made in physical and chemical modifications of nanofiller using various techniques and modifying agents is presented. The effectiveness of each strategy and the correlation between the surface modified nanofiller and the CO2 separation performance of the resultant nanocomposite membranes are thoroughly discussed.
